Not knowing any architects in Whangarei I did a Google search for well reputed ones and settled on Steve. At no point have my wife and I ever regretted this. We wanted to extend our house with a master bedroom, ensuite and walk in wardrobe over the top of a concrete deck above double garages. Steve listened to our brief and came up with several options. The one we chose suits has come up even better than we had hoped for. His recommendation of Mark Kokich Builders was a masterstroke as Mark often builds Steve's designs. The combination of designer and builder made the project extremely smooth (apart from a forced delay caused by Covid 19). We have no hesitation in recommending Steve Povey Designs to anyone looking at building.

We worked with Steve who designed our home to take us through our retirement years. We had some specific and unusual requests such as a set of glass engraved panels from doors in our old house which we wanted incorporated in the new house walls. This has become quite a feature along with curved internal walls and plenty of open living space. We had a long list of musts and Steve came up with some very imaginative ideas which makes our house unique and special to us. Steve designed my house at McLeods Bay to maximise the views from all angles of the house out to the Bay. He came up with a unique design for my budget and requirements including a drivethrough garage. I have received nothing but ongoing compliments about the quality of the design and build. He kept me informed throughout the design, consenting and building process, and when I was not able to be onsite was willing to also provide project management assistance on my behalf. I have ended up with a lovely house my friends nickname 'my mansion' which is a great asset , to be able to relax in and enjoy stunning vistas.

Kevin and Heather Pryor New Build Ngunguru Steve and builder Mark Kokich have designed and built a home for us that incorporates some great design concepts and a top class finish. Steve has captured the view and weather aspects of the home so that we have the sun all day, are sheltered from the cold winds and have a beautiful outlook down the Ngunguru river. Mark and his team have done a quality build in all aspects and have made the building process very easy for us. We recommend Steve and Mark for a design and build project.

We have a 1910 villa that needed sensitive renovation to preserve its history and also make it into a comfortable, warm, modern home. Although we have only completed part of the work, the new addition fulfills every requirement we have of it. It is light, comfortable, and the integration with the existing home is seamless. Although most of this extension forms the utility part of the home (as opposed to later renovations that will encompass more 'public' parts of the home), the proportions are generous and the design is elegant and fitting for the style of the house. We have had numerous comments on the changes to the house from random members of the public, commenting on how beautiful it looks and how the new part of the house complements the older part perfectly. We couldn't be more thrilled with it and can't wait to start on the next steps, which we have no doubt will equally enhance a lovely and dignified old home with Steve's excellent design to give it another 110 years' life!

We moved to Whangarei to build a new house for our retirement. Being a builder of over 40 years, I wanted to build my own home and this required knowing who the best were in Whangarei to recruit for assistance. Browsing the internet, we searched for an architect and came across many websites, one of which was of Steve Povey. His designs and information were impressive, and after consultation with him, we decided to proceed with the build. Steve embraced our concept along with his many great designs, incorporated into a plan we are proud of. The house design is a very functional and attractive home suited to our lifestyle. Steve has been very helpful throughout the process of the build with recommendations and continuing support when needed. I would recommend Steve Povey to anyone with a future build project. Steve did a wonderful job of designing our home of 25 years . Even if was quite a long time ago we feel it is still ageless and very relevant to live in as if it is a modern place. He was very easy to work with and caught our vision for a house that had a view and the sun in every room. He captured that perfectly. We find the house so convenient and easy to live in. He is still interested in the place and keeps in touch.

Our project was an extensive renovation to a 1950's home, Steve and builder Mark have done a fabulous job and we love the home. Steve has great knowledge of the process and always had a practical solution to a problem (which you'll always come across doing a reno to a older home). Steve was able to create great spaces within the parameters he had, and after a year living in it we wouldn't change a thing.

This is the second time that we have used Steve Poveys' expertise in house design. First was for a renovation job on an old villa which was modernised beautifully and that we enjoyed for the next 18 yrs. The lastest for a new build in a very modern curved style, thought out by Steve, and which looks fantastic. The house has been well sited on the section, so that we enjoy the best of the “ all day sun” throughout the house, all the year round. We have great water views, more than we ever imagined and Steve has also made good use of the natural light in his design which i really appreciate. It is a spacious, “easy to care for” wheelchair friendly home which we enjoy. We love the design, a challenge well met by Builder Grant Whittle and his tradesmen, who did an excellent job in putting it all together and adding the finishing touches. Steve has the ideas to get a build started and encourages the owners to participate in the sharing and modification of these. He keeps you up to date on any new requirements or changes in the build and adjusts them accordingly. Though our builder was managing overall, Steve still kept an interest throughout the project. The end result is marvellous. Thankyou for all you input Steve and taking the time to listen to us.
