I recall first walking into the RSA one Friday evening over three years ago now. I would often walk past and see the free courtesy bus coming and going with the movement of people from the bus into the club. My first reaction being that the people seemed elderly and without being rude not really my crowd and that I would not have a lot in common.
How wrong could I be, so one Friday whilst my walk to the hustle and bustle and expensive venues of Howick I took the plunge and went inside. Like a cautious kitten that steps out of its safety zone i made my way to the bar and purchased my drink and sat on table near the TAB machine and sports tv monitors. Within minutes I was given a smile and hello by more than one of the other patrons and from that moment on I never looked back.
I was ushered to a leaner with a variety of people from all ethnicity and backgrounds male and female and the stories and fun and banter began.
Then at 6pm on the dot a sudden silence befell and a bell tolled as we all stood and faced the eternal flame to honour the fallen. The ode was read and people paid there respects as the hair in the back of my neck stood and I felt the emotion of the moment. To this day I still do, an array of people came and went with raffle prize draws and general light herated good old fashioned banter and fun. The pokie machine room rung out and everybody cheered as the bells and whistles indicated that somebody had won the $1000 jackpot and the usual guess who was taking place of who the lucky punter was.
The the smell hit me of a beautiful aroma of home cooking as the kitchen broke into life and chefs in whites brought out juicy big joints of meat along with what smelt like a good home cooked Sunday dinner.
Since my first venture into the RSA I have developed such great friendships and feel like part of the family that is the Howick RSA.
I have been on comedy cruises with a group, Dog racing and the trots and networked so well within the community through it.
Yes its not a bustling chic hip place to look at but trust me venture inside and experience the good family like welcome and I am sure you will be back just like me.
