Reviews of Bread & Butter Bakery and Cafe
k.
Love the decor and ambience of the cafe. The coffee was good and also the cream brûlée donut! We tried two dishes from the food menu (crispy corn fritter and Eton mess), not quite like them, sorry. However, the cabinet foods look great and We will come back to try out. Thank you.
I.
Very busy place. The cabinet food always run out quickly. Decent coffee. Enjoy the cafe setting and decorations. Love to come back more often. Managed to sample few varieties of dishes. Good family place to hang out. This cafe advertised as children friendly. I do not see many toys or any playground for young children to enjoy.
B.
We stopped by to grab an online order. There were plenty of parking spaces closer to the cafe. We grabbed one of the gingerbread houses and a frozen croissant. The croissants came with instructions with how to make them. Sadly, the gingerbread house didn't come with icing so we weren't able to do it.
Edit: We were refunded for the house and were able to keep it. The instructions were a bit hard to follow, it would've been easier with pictures, but we did manage to figure it out. The gingerbread was quite spicy so seens to cater for adult tastes.
Edit: We tried their frozen croissant and they were really good. Nice and crispy outside, soft but not too bready on the inside. It was easy to prepare with thier instructions, leaving it overnight in the oven and then baking it the next day.

I really like coming to Bread & Butter Cafe and it gets better every time we visit.
Ordered a large coffee, which came in a bowl ☺ (big plus for me), and it was delicious!
For brunch, we had the Bacon Eggs Benedict and Corn Fritters. Both were very nice and just right with the portions.
Service was quick and easy, plus the cutlery came out to you when you sat down.
Sorry, no photos as we just dug into our brunch. We also left with some Bakery. Yummo!
a.
Excellent customer service. Spacious sitting inside and outside of cafe. Delicious fruit tarts and reasonably priced. Good parking for a busy area. First time customer very impressed.
L.
This is one of our favourite cafes! Although the menu changes seasonally, the food is always great. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and the coffee is great. Part of the same group as Melba, B & B is worth the drive and the money.
There’s also fresh bread and baked goods available in the cabinet.
Personal recommendation: try the house hash brown!
N.
As a Portuguese expat in New Zealand, I obviously had to taste the Portuguese tarts on display in the cabinet. I was impressed with their quality, but did find the dough was not as light and crispy as back home. Still good, nonetheless! The coffee is delicious and note that if you order a large flat white, you get it in a bowl! For the main, I had the crispy corn fritters and boy was I impressed! Don't be fooled by the photo where all you see is the scrumptious scrambled eggs. The fritters underneath managed to stay crisp all the way through to my last bite. The middle Eastern flavors were the icing on the cake. In addition, for a full house, the service sure was not delayed and was done with a smile on their faces. Well done!
T.
Great looking place with a good variety of delicious breads and sweet stuff which seems to be all prepped & cooked on site.
Service was pleasant enough but they seem to congregate more around the person making the coffee then servicing the tables.
Coffee was good, we ordered the big breakfast meal but felt the price we paid and what was offered was a little underwhelming compared to what we have been used too.
We got in early and saw how busy this place can get, it caters as a sit down cafe as well as a takeaway bakery.
T.
Awesome cafe. The food is to die for and service is excellent.
I usually stop in for my fav Pain su Chocolat on my way to work from an appointment nearby. Light, crispy and buttery with a quality dark chocolate inside.
This day I had a sit down breakfast with a couple of friends. The Ancient Grains Porridge with cardamom pear and a side pottle of cashew cream arrived in the small cast iron pan in which it had been cooked, topped with toasted coconut. It looked delicious and tasted even better. Mouthwatering and very filling., it kept me going for the day. You can't go past this place.
M.
We really enjoyed our meal here, portions are small but still very delish and fresh. Would come back
G.
We found Bread & Butter to be a super-vibrant eatery in the heart of Grey Lynn; an awesome selection in every department from sweet to savoury, a brunch menu full of temptations. It really felt like a bustling eatery and authentic bakery.
The staff we encountered were friendly and genuinely cared about our experience. For example we found the base on our chicken pie slightly undercooked, and when passing on that feedback it was taken in good spirits the way it had been intended. But the food apart from that quibble was beyond stellar; the big “Baker’s Breakfast” one of the best versions I Can remember. The sausage was well appointed, seasoned and cooked, while the fresh toasted bread from their kitchen really lifted the whole plate. The custard tarts on the counter were too tempting to pass up so I had one of those, while my partner had his creamy chicken pie and his own indulgence of both an apple juice and and iced chocolate, served in pretty mason glassware.
Given the selection and how warm and pleasant the whole experience was, I have no hesitation to say I hope to return in future when next visiting Auckland.
V.
Great bakery and coffee. Cafe is spacious with great atmosphere. They also have a stall at Grey Lynn's Sunday market with slightly lower price compared to the cafe.
T.
Cool atmosphere, friendly staff .. food a bit of a let down. The large coffee came out of the kitchen fast enough, however could have been hotter. Same with the food. Delicious looking, however seemed cold, as if it had been sitting waiting for a while. Enjoyed my visit but probably wont come again.
M.
Definitely a must-try. Just missed their Creme Brulee Brioche, but I still got to try their Piña Colada Donut and Hakanoa Ginger Latte. Thanks to the lovely staff for making my visit worthwhile. Coming back for that Brioche! 👍😋
C.
Bread and butter always has the best cabinet food - from sweet to savoury you can’t go wrong. Their pretzels and almond croissants are a personal fave 💛
A.
Great atmosphere and the staff were really accommodating to our group. The food was pretty good to, there's going to be something there for everyone. Price wise, it's reasonable considering that they make most things in house.
It tends to get busy around lunch so I would recommend making a booking.
L.
Great atmosphere and service. Beautiful presentation and portion. Service was spectacular. Kudos to the chef.
m.
Wow what a fantastic great food cafe. So much to choose from. Just check out the pictures for eye candy
T.
Our regular brunch weekend spot. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Food is amazing and arrives so quickly even in the weekend.
j.
One of the best artisan bakery around Auckland CBD with Organic flour and natural local ingredients and sourdough.
S.
Amazing food and lovely staff! Highly recommended.
D.
Good pastries but it’s unfortunate when they don’t have it on the table which shows how much quality they put into their food production
A.
Love this place. Fantastic service and an awesome kitchen producing delicious yummy food! Try it asap.
S.
Great place for weekend brunch. The food and staff are great. The menu changes seasonally to ensure fresh produce.
R.
Had a very pleasant lunch here, food was good, an interesting and unusual menu. Coffee was good, food was good. The cinnamon pastry was pretty good, but would have been better heated. We both bought things to take home as well.
B.
Good looking and Great taste! Top café shop in Auckland
T.
Lovely food and service; our server was really accommodating as we had a small child, looking for ways to move us to a bigger table etc. Hot cross buns are delicious, worth taking some home for later!
F.
This place was awesome! The spiced apple hot cakes were the star of the day. Coffee was great also
T.
This is our go to bakery and their bread is incredible. Highly recommend it. They also stock a great range of takeaway sandwiches and pastries. Perfect for a to take out bite and whilst we haven't dined in, the food always looks amazing. We are here weekly!
A.
Excellent food sourced responsibly with whole ingredients. My family went one day and had to go back the next the food was so good and healthy.
L.
I purchased the baking staff (pastries and bread) from the Whangaparaoa bakery. Everything is incredibly delicious. The best European style bakery in whole Hibiscus coast. Eventually we have quality bakery in this area.
R.
Plenty of parking and good seasonal menu. We think that the staff here are phenomenal. Helpful and happy with a smile on their faces at all times . Timing is everything when you come here as it can be manic particularly on weekends from 9.30am to 1pm . We enjoy the pastries CV as the range is quite good and of a high quality .
D.
A good secluded bakery and cafe that lots of people know about.
It has #wheelchair ♿ accessible entryway and seating.
Toilets available🚻
The bakery food absolutely delicious check out my photos.
I had a hot chocolate and muffin.. check out my video.
Great decor rustic style this place looks busy so check out the times when it's not as busy.
Seating also outside.
Alcohol is served here.🥂
Kids menu with high chairs for your little ones.
5 star rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
J.
We used the small meeting room which was great. Just had to put down some money for the room but that was pretty much a tab for drinks and food etc so doesn't end up costing to hire.
The food and service was perfect.
Highly recommended.
S.
A great location for client meetings if you can get the meeting room. Great tasting food and very nice coffee. Friendly & fast service who looked after the table well.
D.
Great place for breakfast/brunch. Friendly staff and great coffee. Eggs benedict is always my breakfast test on whether or not I like somewhere and I really do like B&B. Fresh eggs, fresh bread & great variety (which you would expect!), and my Breakfast Buddy, being a man of simple tastes, is a fan of the bratwurst and hashbrowns. Also love the Breakfast of Champignons (mushrooms).
It’d be nice to see streaky bacon as an option rather than back bacon as back bacon in cafes always feels a little overcooked and cardboardy & that’s sometimes the case here, but it’s not a deal breaker for me.
Staff do get busy & occasionally need a couple of attempts at waving down, but they can’t be everywhere at once. Great coffee and friendly service, see you again soon.
H.
Really friendly staff and chilled out atmosphere. I go here with friends regularly and even when they are busy the waiters try their best to fit us in. I recommend trying the Smash Avocado Luxe and the Breakfast Of Champignons. Oh, and the coffee is absolutely amazing!
F.
Its a place you must to go. Evwrythibg Wonderful.
M.
Brought my 2 Aunty's there yesterday. One from Italy & the other from Switzerland. They thoroughly enjoyed the meals & atmosphere there. Staff were so attentive & polite. They were patient when she was having trouble paying with her card but got there in the end. Thanx to all the staff for the wonderful service we received. I live in Opotiki & go there when I can if I come up to Auckland. So thank you for for making my family very welcome. Much appreciated.
L.
The aesthetic of the restaurant was very nice, and the staff were friendly. However, the food did take quite a while to come out, and the bacon was very rubbery
A.
This place is busy on the weekend, so be prepared for lunch to take a while.
The service is great. And the food is varied and delicious. A favorite. Actually, no it's terrible, don't go there! Especially next Sunday when we're there. Don't take our table!😂😉
M.
Great food, especially their pastry selection which is standout, but if you're looking for brunch beware that the place packs out pretty early and has somewhat limited seating (and parking can be a mission too). All that aside, it's a great spot for food and coffee.
R.
We go here a lot. The coffee Five Elements is very nice and the food generally very good too. Wonderful sweet pastries plus great service. Try the chicken Turkish pizza, outstanding!
S.
Excellent service.. yummy great food.. well done 👍👏👏👏👏
a.
The fried chicken dish was superb! They use a thigh piece rather than breast piece of meat so its quite juicy. The pain au raisin was beautifully crunchy and just the right amount of custard. However the biggest let down was the coffee, had a basic cappuccino and mocca both were watery and weak. On a sunday morning you need a good coffee and this cafe didnt deliver sadly. The server was nice and friendly.
R.
I enjoy coming to this cafe every now and then. There's an extensive menu of yummy items as well as a great selection of cabinet treats. The coffee is fantastic, the food is mostly locally sourced and free range. And, as the name suggests, they have a selection of speciality breads for sale. The staff are always friendly and the service is good, even when they're busy.
J.
The food and service was fantastic. Can not wait to go again. Thanks Guys.
S.
Amazing sourdough! We've just tried their hot cross buns for the first time - probably the best I've ever eaten 🥰
L.
Highly recommend the pork belly sourdough toastie -$21- (for a limited time) and the beignets with chocolate and syrup, so delicious!
Friendly service and warm, comfy interior with heaps of beautiful bread (one of the only places that makes fresh pretzels) and cabinet food.
K.
My friends and I had a fantastic brunch here. Our our dishes from the a la carte menu were sensational, as was the bread and butter pudding from the cabinet that I ordered for my "Brunch Dessert". All the sweet treats in the cabinet looked delicious and I wish I could have tried me all! Oh well, a good excuse to come back again I suppose.
A.
The savory cabinet food is still cold even after 2nd reheating.
The other is okay, nice place.
B.
Great atmosphere, polite service, tasty food, good size portions and close to stores such as Farros and Mitre 10. Lovely find and will frequent often
D.
Great food,as always. Love the seperate room available for bookings, which is a bit quieter than the main cafe
D.
Super delicious breakfast, good coffee and awesome choices. Friendly stuff and cute location.
Mushroom side dish is soo good & the bread was yummy too!
( little pricey though ( 2 pax ~ $60) )
R.
Good atmosphere and food
R.
I'm not convinced that the Bread and Butter organic Tuscan Country Loaf is actually an artisan bread. I have tried it 5 times and it is a somewhat bland and light loaf without a distinctive flavor.
My friends disagree with me but I am not convinced that this bread style is anything other than the lightest white bread possible with this flour.
.
Perhaps best used as 4 day old toasted breadcrumbs? I toasted it after 2 days and it tasted better than when it was fresh.
N.
Really enjoyed a mid week lunch here. Food very fresh and inspiring. Spicy chai was not too sweet compared to some and was much better for that. Well worth a visit.
P.
We were hosted today by Bread and Butter and had an amazing time. We were a party of 22 and everything went so smooth and the customer service was amazing. Highly recommend. Never have been disappointed when eating here. Thank you
E.
Friendly staff and great food. Their "Baker's breakfast" is really good and very generous size.
L.
Busy little place - one of the best interior fitouts I've seen for a cafe / bakery. Coffee wasn't really to my taste - but the takeout sweet delights were nice. Bread looked amazing!
M.
Their coffee is very good, and some of their food is as well but while their service is very warm and friendly they often let themselves down with lack of attention to detail. Their porridge is very disappointing so if you like porridge or have a porridge loving kid then get something else.
C.
Fantastic range of sourdough breads, best coffee ever (sensible sizes!), friendly staff, comfortable decor and atmosphere and truly amazing breakfast, including a wild card weekly special waffle (husband had the lemon meringue waffle, for breakfast!) Recommend to everyone - we had two mornings in Auckland and went there both mornings! Deeeeeelicious!
S.
I love stopping in for a quick sandwich and a coffee!
they have an awesome selection of baked goods and some of the best bread and pastries in Auckland!
A.
Yummy food and coffee, great service, friendly staff. Only downside, I got there with a pram and was tricky finding a spot with enough room for it. We ended sitting outside and was ok, but just because was summer.
M.
Nice atmosphere but overpriced. $7 for a side of bacon guys..
M.
10% surcharge on public holidays!
The food is nice and a good selection of baked goods. Coffee is ok too.
We came here on a public holiday and the was slow which is annoying given the surcharge. But usually it's pretty good.
M.
Great service, water was offered and special attention given to M3. Amazing food..we had the cauliflower dish and it was to die for. Excellent coffee. Great experience!
P.
Great food, good coffee, great service, highly recommended ❤
P.
Still a pretty consistent place to eat. Go out and support a local business!
B.
always so yummy, nice place to catch up with friends n whanau
A.
Always very busy but not long to wait for a table. Great varied menu. Delicious coffee. So much choice with the bread. Pleasant staff
D.
Absolutely exquisite food and goid prices. Only reason for 4 stars is one staff member's judgy attitude and snarky comments. Otherwise so fantastic. Even the soap in the toilets was delightful
S.
Lovely atmosphere, one of few Auckland cafes that has background music that you can hear but that is not too loud or annoying. Good coffee, friendly staff and awesome salted caramel Berliner...
A.
Reliably good counter food & coffee. Big space, can be a bit noisy but you can almost always get a table. Prompt and friendly service.
K.
Very good food.
