Reviews of Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheesecake
S.
Yummy cheesecake…great taste and beautiful texture..must try
H.
Very Asian taste kind of cake. Not too sweet or too oily. The staff is quite nice and the service is really good. Madeleine has a variety of flavours which is decent if you want to have a try. With its convenient location and beyond average taste, no wonder it was popular at the beginning of their business.

Went there the first time yesterday as I had this cake in Japan that I liked it. However I found it’s not the same I must say compare to the same brand I had in Japan. Too cheesy where’s in Japan is more like sponge and soft so it’s easy to eat half of the cake at once! And the look of this cake is not as the same day cake ....... maybe they have changed recipe? Owner changed? Cheesy to suit the locals? I don’t know but maybe i will not come back again . The 3 star gives to the good Japanese service as the trade mark of Japan indeed. The cleanses of the shop and the cake is still ok to eat.
D.
First time to try this cheesecake and it’s good! Soft, creamy, and fluffly! 🤗 staff in the counter was also super nice and accommodating. Will definitely go back and try the chocolate version next time 😊

Stopped by to pick up some since I was in town. The line looks quite long but it starts at the door and doesn't go into the shop. If you are just wanting the madeleines then you can head to the front of the queue, but if you were wanting the cheesecake then you have to wait in line.
You pretty much wait in line for freshly baked cheesecake. Once a batch is ready then they sell one cheesecake per person for $19.99.
Cheesecake is interesting but a bit too soft for my liking.

One of the best Japanese cheesecake in Auckland. They have special flavor is earl grey flavor. This is only available for 25 each day for limited time only. Each cheesecake cost $20. Most of my friends have positive feedback about this case. The only problem is the price too high. This cake sell in Ausi only $10 and Malaysia is also $10. I don’t understand why they sell $20 here. VH

Taste of cheesecake and madeleines were so nice. Sweetness is good.
Perfect for small gift to bring a friend’s house party or something.
However compared to the price, they are not giving you that much special taste nor texture. You can easily bake your own and get same taste. Once is enough and happy to try. :)

I’m glad Uncle Tetsu is finally here in Auckland! Went on the opening night and it was packed so went the day after and I saw the real Uncle Tetsu inside the store! Saw him outside as well but am in a queue so couldn’t go to him for a pic together. The staff are friendly and helpful amidst the busy day. Can’t give five stars yet because I had to wait for an hour to get a single cake. If you are used to the overly sweet cheesecakes sold here in Auckland, you might find Uncle Tetsu’s really different from them.

Imported from Japan, this fluffy cake is never to be missed. Not a long queue to wait, hot from oven - it's the cake! Eat with hot tea or coffee is recommended. Located on Queens street.

I lined up around 2 hours when this store first opened and it wasn't worth it. If there isn't a huge line then yeah, it's a fluffy soft and moist cheesecake which might not suite everyone's tastes but it was enjoyable. It's not anything mind blowing, it's a simple fluffy Japanese cheesecake so don't get your hopes up if you were expecting a life changing dessert. This is a really instagramable food but the taste is meh

Tried both cheesecake and madeleine. Uncle Tetsu’s cheesecake is one of a kind, it melts in your mouth lithely and gracefully, it’s smooth, rich and tasty without being oily, totally worth the price. In the other hand, the madeleine is featureless and pricey for its size.
Note: the cheesecake is limited to 1 per order and the madeleine is buy 5 get 1 free at the moment (21/10/2017)

Omnomnomnomnom! This was my first experience with Japanese Cheesecake and I must say, this is far far yummier than your average cheese cake! Must try!
A.
Received an Uncle Tetsu's Cheesecake, it was delicious, very light and spongy. Great service. Would highly recommend.
D.
Awesome presentation and customer service!, but the flavor was not something that I will go crazy. The Madeleine was kinda plain and the cheesecake is better because it has a great and unique texture, but the flavor is just ok.
E.
Delicious Mixed berry crepe not too sweet and Highly recommended. It took 15 mins waiting but it was worth it.
Thx Sophie, she was so kind and did her job perfect .
B.
One of the best Japanese cheesecakes in town... Also a must tru is green tea one.
P.
Very yummy chocolate madelein cakes!
Don't compare it with Japanese cakes as we are in New Zealand. Definitely best taste of New Zealand.
S.
The cake is sooooo delicious! Both classic and chocolate flavour are yummy~ And you need to try the pudding! Very smooth and rich texture.
R.
Amazing quality and texture in everything from cheesecakes to cupcakes to caramel cream. Always have to queue for ages in other parts of the world and the wait is much more manageable here in Auckland
Thanks for coming to North Shore for us fans
G.
Delicious. Must try at least once. Take the cheese cake if you are confused.
D.
Japanese style cheesecake is very different to th3 cheesecake that westerners are familiar with. Gone is the heavy cheese desert with lots of sweet toppings. Instead this style has an egg flavoured blandness. It's more like a sponge cake than cheesecake. But far moister than sponge. The flavoured variety like earl grey combine that moisture with subtle flavors. Definitely recommend you try one. The Earl Grey is my favorite. Not cheap though at $20 a cake but in line with the cost of most cakes this size.

I hadn't heard of Uncle Tetsu's, just happened to stumble upon the long line while walking down Queen St. I had time to spare (expect to wait an hour) and love desserts, so why not try it? I had never had Japanese Cheesecake before, but the style was very different from what I'm used to - much more cake-like, spongey, and light. I really enjoyed it, and would even wait in line to try it again. I also tried a Madeline, but I would probably pass on that treat next time. The cheesecake was best fresh & warm from the oven, but took on a slightly different taste (equally delicious) once at home in the fridge. At $20 per cake, it's very expensive, but worth it for the novelty in my opinion. Enjoy!
A.
I recently purchased a chocolate cheescake from here, and really enjoyed it. Its quite different from the usual cheesecake, its more like a cake but very light and fluffy - worth a try - recommend to all.
S.
The cheesecake on it's own is decent. It has a nice, soft and puffy texture however for it's price @ $19.99 and a 1 hour average wait, this is definitely not worth your time and effort. You can expect to be sorely disappointed if you buy into the rush. The madelines similarly are pretty average, I made the mistake of buying 5, guilty of falling for the sunk cost fallacy. I recommend trying this place when the hype's died out.
I would put this cheesecake on par with Singapore's Giant Hypermarket 'No-Frill's Cheesecake which retails for SGD$4.50.
J.
Don't really feel like it's worth the hype. The cheesecake has a good texture. But it literally just taste like egg... Like really eggy. The muffins tasted better but they were a bit dry. Don't feel the high prices are justified. It's also a bit counter intuitive for people to wait up to 25mins in lines, and still only allowing 1 cake purchase per person. This is going to end like Topshop. I'm sure of it.
J.
Best Cheesecake in the world. Japanese Cakes are the best. I hope they will have branch in South Auckland.
N.
2nd time trying. I live in hamilton and drove all the way from hamilton for this cheesecake. Worth it for me. I love the fluffy moist texture, great warmed in microwave. Havent tried anything else but the standard cheesecake. Would love to next week x Thanks for existing
O.
A Japanese sweets shop where they offer cupcakes, madeleines, pancakes and cheesecakes with JApanese flavours such such as this Matcha Madeleine. The service was quick and the actual Madeleine was soft, fluffy, light and delicious. I would definitely check out the Matcha cheesecake next time.
V.
Such a delicious fluffy cheesecake!!!!!!!!!
The staff are so nice at the store, highly recommend.
G.
You won't need to spend long trying to make choices because you really only have 2: either the daily Madeline mini cakes or a full size Japanese cheesecake. You must note though, for Westeners, these cheesecakes are more like egg-based poundcake meets muffin, and you'll need some water after as it's all fairly dry, despite being very fluffy. Line is extremely short now at least
K.
Unle Tetsu is the one of best japaese cheesecake brand.
19.99NZD is cheeper than their shop in Sydney.
This cheesecake is much different from western cheesecakes.
It is very fluffy but not too sweet.
I look toward to their coming new cakes.
I will get in line again.
S.
Cheesecake is overpriced, muffin type cakes are reasonable. Initial hype has died down so you no longer need to queue, which is good.
R.
I love Uncle Tetsu's original cheesecake - the taste, the texture and the sound when you break off a piece.
M.
Lovely bakery and staff are very kind and helpful. Does seem busy all the time as well. The soft cheesecake was beautiful.
S.
20-40 minute wait, but very yummy and the service is absolutely fantastic lovely ladies.
P.
Very long line for the store. It sells Japanese styles muffins and cheesecakes. Taste is alright may be I need to train my taste to like it more.
M.
Pretty nice original cheesecake, with a rather dense texture. I just miss the raisins in the cheesecake, like Uncle Rikuro’s does in Japan 😉
p.
Yummy cheese tart 😋 must try
I.
A very different type of cheese cake. Very light, sweet without being too sweet, eggy, if that's a thing, but worth a visit.
H.
First time i tried it last week. it is just a normal sponge cake with only a little bit cheese flavor. Why wait for 30 minutes to get it?
s.
Its totally worth the hype. Absolutely love the cakes. They are light and taste awesome. Definitely worth trying.
D.
Great light cheesecake, not in the European style, but a baked cake with great cheese flavour.
C.
The cheesecake is amazing and the staff are friendly. I tried a Madeleine (chocolate) and that was a bit dry.
A.
One of the best Cheesecakes ever. Please open one up in Wellington.
K.
Good fluffy cheesecakes but has a long line, especially during busy times.
C.
The Madelines are nicer than the cheesecake in my opinion, but they are both nice.
T.
Love their cheesecakes! Absolutely fresh and delicious!
J.

K.
Had to wait about 20 mins for a $20 cheesecake. Well worth the wait
H.
Was expecting more from the cheesecake with all the hype. It's ok tasting but I wouldn't want to queue for it.
T.
Nice, but just ok given price. Over-hyped. Does not come hot unless you ask for it probably.
J.
So yummy but very expensive $20 for one cheesecake
D.
