We did not stay at the camp here but it looked like a good set up with small cabins overlooking Cook Strait to Southern Alps. Amazing view! We ate at the camp restaurant which was really great. Retro 60's theme. Very busy. Indoor or outdoor dining. Local crayfish & paua on the menu.
J.
Awesome stay in one of the cabins. Super friendly hosts. Great Cafe/restaurant on site. Unreal views of the south island weather permitting. A truly beautiful part of the lower North Island.

A super unique place! Loved it. We went on a pretty rainy, cold, winters weekend so was pretty empty which did make it feel a little bit strange and lonely in the middle of nowhere. Had a cosy fire in the main building though, good toilet and kitchen facilities, and we were nice and warm in the cabin. Really close to the amazing seal colony and lighthouse, and to the Putangirua pinnacles, all of which are well worth a visit.
P.
We decided on a spur of the moment to stay here, they were very accommodating and found a spot for us. The staff were friendly and happy to advise us of good swimming spots for the kids and fishing spots for dad!
The view is simply one of the best in NZ.
I would advise to bring a rubber mallet for the tent pegs as the ground is quite stony, however they do have an axe and sledge hammer on hand if you need it.
I.
The accommodation is basic, but this is a great area of NZ to visit & the host and friends yay this camping spot made it extra extra special. Loved the place and will hopefully visit again soon.
K.
Totally recommend you bring yourself and or your family here. I traveled with my son and we had such a great experience. John is super helpful, super friendly and he has built himself up a super business that he should be super proud of.
R.
Met John and Kim before the long weekend to see if the restaurant would be open. Friendly couple offering different experiences like fishing and sightseeing tours. We were just there for dinner.
Fresh caught fish the winner, perfect fries and a salad from their garden. My steak was good too. Crayfish and sushimi all there.
Very rustic dining room! Everyone friendly, the bar service system relaxed. Couldn't fault the food. They deserve a look in for all the work they have put in to making this work
C.
Honestly i arrived just when the kitchen was about to close. But they still took the time to make me some delicious fresh fish & chips with an absolutely deliciously tasty salad.
Service so kind, gentle, fast.
The place to stop by for my next camping
R.
Very welcoming hosts John and Sissy, we quickly became part of the circle of friends. Shown to the powered site for the campervan we were in and met the friendly staff.
Enjoyed a few beers and food in their onsite cafe bar.
Met two other couples and thoroughly enjoyed an evening exchanging life stories beside a well established log fire.
Thank you for your exceptional hospitality John.
J.
Fantastic service from friendly and helpful staff, meal standard with good choice, while the daycore different and interesting with a fun playground for kids all from yesteryear. Just a have too while out this way and worth a trip definitely going again. ❤❤❤❤
S.
Had the best meal there tonight. Bloody lovely, whitebait entree and steak, salad, chips and onion rings for main. Steak was so juicy. We loved our meal.
A.
Incredibly relaxing, so peaceful, the food was exceptional
the staff Wo I cannot recommend more highly.
Would definitely "without second thought" revisit
if you are fortunate enough to go to waimiha camping ground you would be doing yourself a great service excellent experience
Thank you John and all your stuff for the most exceptional experience
J.
Excellent campsite with fabulous sea views. Off the beaten track. No phone signal. Limited WiFi. Excellent to escape ☺️
J.
A wonderful experience and only 2 hours from Wellington. Warm Kiwi hospitality from JP and his crew. The retro theme gives the place a unique whacky vibe. A great setting on this wild and windy coast. Plenty of seal watching even just down the road. I’ll be back. Loved it. Many thanks John. Keep up the good work.
L.
We didn't stay here, just went to get a fresh crayfish and got so much more! John was amazing, friendly and accommodating to us. Great food, service and facilities! Would highly recommend going even if it is just for a chat and a beer with the owner! We will be back with friends and family for sure!
D.
A really good spot, great host & camping areas.😊👍
A.
Nice relaxed place, kids complained the mattresses too thin on bunk beds but other than that good place.
N.
Would highly recommend this place for camping, the hospitality and the food in their cafe bar & grill. Lovely weekend away from Welly
J.
Quiet campsite with cabins, fabulous views, good facilities, friendly and helpful staff.
D.
Thoroughly enjoyed my 3 night stay. The owner was very friendly and made us feel so welcome, as well as giving us cool ideas of things to do up there. The perfect little getaway.
I.
Good place to stay. Friendly staff good food 😋

What a fabulous 3 days we spent here in our caravan. An awesome large powered site, with sea views, bird song and rolling hills. John, the owner is one special guy, he goes out of his way in an authentic Kiwi way to make you feel welcome and to give you an experience. We were lucky enough to try out his seafood chowder, all prepared from his fresh catch of the day, which was absolutely delicious, and feast on some of John's venison, plus in the evenings we sat around a roaring log fire, in-between listening to vinyl on a record player and indulging in a game of John's friendly style pool, great if your not that good like us! The whole experience at the campsite and it's proximity to places of interest is a must if you want to feel that you are immersing yourself in what is available locally and meeting the people that live there.
S.
We had the most amazing stay. The camping village is well kitted out with all we could need. There was plenty to do to entertain our energetic toddler. John and the team were so warm and welcoming, John even gave up his new years day to bring us out on the boat. We cannot recommend this place enough. These guys are fantastic.
S.
Did a day trip out to Cape Palliser and stopped on the way back to Wellington. Awesome friendly genuine staff and owner. Got a drink and coffee which I was thought was moderately priced for the location as it’s isolated there and ages away from the nearest town/supermarket.
Although I did not stay here the cabins and and common areas looked cosy with the a genuine Kiwi atmosphere and decor that made me want to come back.
M.
What a beautiful spot to come to with stunning views and facilities. Cabins and camping spots available. Showers $2, washing and dryer $5 each. Great kitchen with everything you need. The shop sells drinks, crackers, chips, lollies, paua and lobster. Cafe, bar and barista onsite open from Thursday to Sunday. Charter fishing trips available. Close to the light house and walking distance to the sea and dump station at Ngwai 5 mins away.
D.
If you are looking for somewhere that feels away from everything with totally beautiful scenery and you don't mind quite simple accommodation, this place is awesome. Easy to spend a whole weekend with quite a few activities available
W.
Fantastic weekend. Great hosts. Clean facilities and awesome to spend a cold evening around a roasting fire, playing pool with other guests. Great fish and chips at the captain's table up the road. Thank you and will be back.
C.
Great place to stay! Pretty much had the place to ourselves. Facilities were super clean and the office has a small array of grocery items incase you haven’t brought anything else with you. Super rugged and cold but totally worth the trip out there to see the seal colony!
k.
Perfect place for a family get together. Cosy cabins with great bed linen and comfy beds. Stunning location and ideal space for children and the grown-ups.
N.
Amazing place!!
Just stay here to see for yourself!
The facilities are brand new and everything is immaculately clean. The kitchen has everything you need and more.
The common area is lovely and it's super cosy to sit by the fire. There's a pool table, darts board, great big TV, bar. Haven't seen such a nice living room anywhere we stayed around NZ. Oh and the views are absolutely stunning! Lots to do in the area.
And most importantly, the hosts are amazing and so accommodating! Thank you so much JP and Sissy! We are very lucky to have come across this place.
P.
Nothing more i can i say ..Book in right now !!...if you have or want adventure in cape palliser..
M.
Fabulous staff and excellent host! Excellent location! Great if your into gathering seafood for the crew. Definitely recommend booking a charter with John too, even the girls can bring back a decent haul thanks to the skipper, otherwise, the golf course is just down the road and a cute little nick nak shop with the best fish n chip takeaway caravan across the way. There's also a fresh water swimming hole if you don't like swimming in sea water. Cape Palliser lookout and the Pinnacles is only a stones throw away if you want to stretch your legs and do some exercise. There's plenty of spots to go fishing off the shore or you can head over to Lake Ferry or Tora for a change of scenery. The facilities at Waimeha Camping Village are pretty new and the cabins are very comfortable, perfectly situated to capture the best views and amazing sunsets. The camping ground has kayaks and bikes available for hire. Kitchen is well equipped and the games room has plenty to do on wet days. Perfect escape if you want to disconnect and reset from your hectic schedules whether your an active relaxer or a blobber🙃 Highly recommend this place. It's clean, affordable, great location but John and his team make it a place that you want to keep coming back too. Thank you for everything!
N.
It’s a fantastic place, a great cross between a farm stay and high end camp ground with incredible ocean views and brand new cabins. Excellent for young families with its play ground and multitude of tame free roaming farm animals which the children loved. It’s our third time back with more families, which is always topped off by Johns hospitality.
J.
This place is fantastic! The views are amazing, the common area is quirky and cool but what stands out the most is the owner's hospitality. JP goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is having a good time. Oh, that and the bed in the cabin I stayed in was AMAZING! It was like sleeping on a cloud. Plus the view was stunning, gorgeous sunsets. Thank you so much for some great memories JP and we'll be back as soon as we can to have a go at catching some crays!

Enjoyed the experience of being at the bottom of the north island. Lucky enough to have discovered this place while it is fairly new. It has an eclectic range of furniture and the shared kitchen is well equipped with plenty of sheltered Bbq's. The owner made us feel very welcome. Ensuring we were happy with our accommodation, and calling us after our booking was made with instructions on which cabin was ours and to settle in.
A.
A camp ground extraordinaire.. The scenery the diving the seals the light house absolutely gorgeous. But wait there's more... the stand out point of this camping ground is the incredible hospitality of the host John Priest and his daughter Milly. The atmosphere was more like being welcomed home by family to the point the whole camp was invited to a communal tea and it felt like a merry Christmas feast. I cant speak highly enough of the whole experience other than to say we have already booked to go back again and to take friends with us.
a.
What an awesome campground! Super friendly and helpful hosts and a lovely atmosphere. Facilities are well equipped and spotless! We enjoyed the place so much that we extended our stay from one to three nights. Would definitely stay again - can't recommend enough!
S.
The best sunset we saw while in NZ for 3 weeks. This property is new and offers everything you would need including spotless facilities. It's located very close to the cape palliser lighthouse and seal colony and beaches as far as the eye can see. John, the owner is fabulous. He makes you feel right at home. He even had a nightcap with us and brought us some freshly caught lobster to eat! We wish we had stayed another night just to enjoy the beach and John's hospitality.
R.
We arrived late on a Friday night having booked in a tent site for two nights with my partner and our dog. It was late and windy and John happily allowed the three of us to sleep in one of their cabins for the night. The next day we set up our tent and spent time st the light house and seal colony. The camp village is excellent. Modern and well taken care of. John and his wife clearly put their heart and soul into it and we are all so lucky they have opened this up to the public. We can wait to go back.
Waking up to no wind, clear sky and all the surfers enjoying the great surf beach was priceless. Thanks John
N.
Fantastic experience great place to get away and feel at home. John the manager was a great host very clean facilities scenic veiws you must see.

My son and I travelled down from Akld for Xmas in wgtn . My cousin then celebrated his birthday at waimeha camping village the weekend following Xmas. The place was fully booked out to family and friends. I haven't been out to Ngawi for many years, and we were blown away by the friendliest host with the most from the coast John. An alrounder from chef to DJ he covered it all. The facilities there were great, big kitchen, spit and BBQs for Africa. Showers & ablushin modern and clean. The cabins are lovely. And campers and tents were set up with easy sites, powered or non powered sites. Plenty to do there for the kids with trampoline, swings, pool table music, and there own little shop with the main necessities. If your into fishing there's a fish cleaning, gutting station and an outdoor shower if you've been out for a surf. I can see why my cousin loves this place, as we loved it too.
L.
Absolutely enjoyed our stay at Waimeha Camping Village! The million dollar sea views, cozy new cabins & amenities. John is the host with the most! He goes out of the way to make your stay memorable! You wont be disappointed!
D.
Beautiful place with beautiful people with epic scenery all round! My kids, Mrs and I all loved it. Definitely going back one day.
Ps. Take your own coffee if you can't live without it
S.
Great food an accommodation. Excellent hosts and where else can you find a Crayfish Burger!
A.
We stayed here just after the new year (2018). Lovely host and super clean accommodation. Great kitchen facilities and nice views. We will definitely be back and recommend it to all.
A.
Excellent holiday park, stayed in a cabin with and amazing view of the ocean. Bathroom facilities were limited and $2 for a 5mins shower but other than that was very comfortable and warm.
f.
A great place to stay, the host John Priest a true hunting & fishing kinda bloke all new cabins clean motor home sites powered or not and a great time, seal colony, snapper, lobster pots and John I have bought heavier darts for the return match.

An awesome place to stay at!
John and his team are superb at making the guest feel welcome, facilities are very clean, beds are so comfortable, and the location just beside a surfing beach and seaside villages nearby, makes this place a fantastic option for relaxing in the picturesque landscape and getting away from it all.
The prices from accommodation to fish tours and store goods are very good value as well.
John the owner manager is also pretty handy at a game of pool and DJing to the residents to make the place lively when residents want it to be!
Because there is no noise restrictions there can be some really fun and late nights but not too common at all. Given there are no neighbours nearby other than animals in paddocks, this helps with this random option to have a impromptu style nigtclub.
The noise is also contained well in the communal area being enclosed and away from the main acomodation areas.
However don't think this is a party type camp site or conversely a quiet retreat either.
And once again I have to mention the landscape around Waimeha camping is so stunning, unique and picturesque.
So it's appropriate to put you more in the picture.
You have the beautiful Palliser Bay with its dramatic coastline, the Putangirua rock pinnacles which was used in the lord of the rings movie and then further out you can see more unique features. The stunning backdrop consists of the Rimutaka ranges, South island mountains and the quaint and rustic fishing villages nearby all surrounded by beautiful bays and multiple streams running down from the hills of the Wairarapa.
This scenery makes for a tranquil and calming landscape though sometimes this can also be changed quickly to some moody moments of nature. The reason is the whole area near Waimeha camping is fully exposed to the cook straight and Antarctic winds to the more warmer Pacific northerly so this can mix the weather up a bit.
Amongst all this wild country there are numerous small and isolated fishing communities here that are worth a visit too! One such place is called Ngawi being one of the most famous seaside villages in NZ, Ngawi is well known for its commercial crayfish hunting and sports fishing community.
After checking the local scene you may want to indulge yourself with a multiple of activities to suit such as: surfcasting and surfing, bike rides, nine hole golf, cray pot fishing to Palliser Bay tours as well as other tours are readily provided by Waimeha camping staff. There are so many fun activities to choose from that you may never get to do elsewhere in NZ.So be sure to try one!
Some other lessons provided are from feeding the resident animals for the kids of all ages, how to fish, fly kites, see the seals and local bays by boat to guided walks.
So there are plenty of fun options here for the avid adventurer so be sure to check the one that interests you the most and immerse yourself in the moment that is to be had at Waimeha!
I fully recommend this place for a visit and can safely say that John, his family and team are a slick outfit to cater for individuals or larger groups and that you will enjoy your time here.
Enjoy!

Right on the beach front. Close to where the tractors pull out the boats. Tons of sea life. Clean toilets. Can be very windy as it faces right out to the Cook Strait. Very handy, just 7k's, from the Cape Palliser Lighthouse. Being the most southern tip of the North Island, you've just got to go, but check the weather. The road is is very good, see my video on YouTube "Ngawai to Lake Ferry Turn Off" Not much in the way of shops so take in what you need.
