R.I've recently returned from my 5th Wilderness adventure in a Compact for 2 motorhome and my maps are out planning the next trip. As a solo traveller this sized van is ideal. It's cosy, comfortable, convenient and fun to drive. How awesome it is to wake up in a freedom or DOC campsite , look out of the window right by your comfy bed and see a wonderful view. Sometimes I don't want to do more than sip my coffee and gaze at the scenery.
Reliable and well set up, Wilderness motorhomes are lovely and warm even on frosty nights and particularly in the bathroom. When at a campground I often prefer the van's tiny shower to the camp one!
Life is simple when you're on the road with everything you need at your fingertips. Being a 'hermit crab' has definite advantages! I can't wait for my next adventure. Thank you Wilderness for your welcomes, helpfulness and high standard of vehicle maintenance.
p.Our booking was put on hold due to Covid, and the good folk at Wilderness Motorhomes gave us ample time to rescheduled.
Come the day we set off it was indeed the start of an adventure, hot on our tail was cyclone Fili, so having looked at the rain radar we opted for the East coast , where we found winds, but not too much rain, the motorhome was a joy to drive and very comfortable of an evening.
Cooking in the motorhome was a breeze , ample gas to power the fridge, the gas cooker, water heating and the central heating of a morning.
We opted to use un powered camp sites, as they were in general , more picturesque, and often with just two or three other motor homes.
Our travels lasted 8 nights, and 9 days, and we covered over 3,000 km, during that time we shopped only once to re stock out meat and veg.
The fridge held a lot , with a little thought there was room for two bottles of wine, and three bottles of beer ,and three bottles of water which we refilled at the start of each day.
Our choice of roads lead us to places we had not heard of, and scenery not seen by many, such as baby wild pigs running on the side of the road, old homes void of people, but full of memories , streams, where the fish had not been caught.
We had not planed as to where we wanted to go, but we did drive to avoid the tail of the storm, we encounter fallen trees, so had to back track, washed out roads, and small slips..... but we enjoyed it all.
So would we do this again!!!!!! YES, and in the Winter, knowing just how well fitted out the Motorhome is
L.My sister and I hired the twin motorhome. It was totally magic! Customer service was outstanding. The van was easy to drive, beds permanently in place and so cozy, came with all we needed including picnic table and chairs. Easy to keep heated. Just Loved it!

V.1st timers in a motorhome and with 2 toddlers and I must say it was an awesome adventure. We loved every minute of it. So much so we have booked our next holiday from Christchurch in 4 months time. We had everything we needed and we were lucky enough to extend our holiday with them by sending a quick email. It was easy and a the service from the team was amazing.
We can't wait for August.

J.The service is very good, we feel lucky that we did buy the VIP insurance package, it really helped us with our first motorhome trip. We had a small accident the third day on our trip, it was stressful but with the full cover insurance we were ok and the customer service was good.
G.While travelling in Northland in our Burstner IXEO, we started having issues with the operation of our electric drop-down bed. Life became rather stressful when we couldn't re-program the bed to perform consistently. Somewhat in despair, we contacted Wilderness Motorhomes for help, despite not having bought the m/home directly from them.
From the moment WM's Jenni Cournane returned our call, our anxiety was relieved! As WM's workshop was fully booked for the next week, she promptly arranged for our m/home to be booked into Reimann Tuning for the repair. Throughout this period, Jenni regularly checked in with us to update us on the booking, as well following up to ensure that we were satisfied with the work We couldn't have asked for better service.
M.We were first time campervan users, and Wilderness were absolutely fantastic to deal with - from A to Z. They were helpful, very communicative, friendly - and accommodated all our requests. We'd definitely hire from them again, and would highly recommend them to anyone considering a top shelf campervan experience.
S.After renting through a different company for a 9 day trip in September, we were stoked to discover Wilderness Motorhomes and to experience their service. From the moment we booked, the communication and service was excellent - and patient, as we amended our booking a couple of times. Our motorhome was gorgeous - "Buckingham Place on wheels", my husband told everyone. We were completely comfortable, and our trip was just so easy. The one piece of constructive advice we'd offer is that perhaps the non-new rentals might be taken for a drive occasionally to see what happens when they're on the road - in our case, a bump in the road would cause the TV to unclip and swing out (fixed with blu-tak) and cause the fridge to pop open (fixed with those sticky velcro strips) and the clip into which the main door is meant to clip when you want to have it open didn't withstand a decent breeze, and would bang closed, potentially damaging the mesh screen (blu-tak, again). Really minor things, but sometimes it's the little things that niggle ! Back to the highlights - fantastic service at both pick-up and drop-off, amazing on-board storage, and super responsive when we sustained a cracked windscreen (stinky roadworks). Will definitely be back.

Showed us everything thoroughly. The beds were so comfortable and loved never having to take anything apart to build a bed at night! Highly recommend.
D.Lovely motorhome in fantastic condition, wilderness really look after their customers. Beware additional charges for anything and everything useful and especially insurance. Insurance could be handled better rather than scaremongering tactics employed. Other than that a lovely van for touring New Zealand

J.We picked up the Ranger4 campervan in Auckland. The folks there were friendly and the process very easy and thorough. We had already viewed the video but watching again is advised. The walk-around completed and we were off. The first day was just Chris and I getting comfortable with driving on the left. We went to a campground and tested the hookups. Everything worked well. We picked Melinda up the following day in the city. We were very comfortable the entire time. The on-board optional WiFi worked well most places. We were able to go places and see this beautiful country in a unique way. Fantastic!
J.Ok so this is a looooong overdue review. I’m just looking through photos from our trip around NZ now and it prompted me to leave the review. We hired a Nugget 2 camper from Wilderness Motorhomes in Auckland in 2013. The company were very responsive from making the booking to any queries we had throughout the trip. I highly recommend a trip around NZ and if you do, give these guys a shout!
G.We just finished 11 magical days on a middle loop of the South Island, hitting Arthur's Pass, Hokatika, Franz Josef, Makararoa, Wanaka, Mt. Cook, and Lake Tekapo. I was nervous about driving a larger vehicle over the mountain passes and one-lane bridges (and did, in fact, clip a sideview mirror), but was overall quite impressed with the easy handling of the motorhome, as well as the generous comfort and flexibility it afforded us. Staff were easy and quick to communicate with us before and during our trip, and we felt totally supported with any minor issues along the way. We eagerly look forward to our next journey with Wilderness Motorhomes.

w.No regret to have Wilderness motorhome throughout our trip in NZ for 12 days. Our motorhome key were bended & unable to access rear door, they send us a replacement key to our next destination within 24 hour. I'm impressed their swift response! Thanks for the complimentary fetch from Auckland airport, till end of our trip in NZ, they send us off to Christchurch airport. A very memorable trip!
D.We were two weeks into a road trip when the snap level 4 lockdown was announced. After spending level 3 and 4 in Wanaka we were off again, and were able to extend the trip from a planned 6 weeks to 4 months. Wilderness was able to arrange a renewed COF during the trip, and were really helpful when we changed plans and extended two or three times.

A premium product that certainly delivers
G.This was our 2nd holiday with Wilderness Motorhomes and we love them! The vehicle is super easy to drive and feels solid and stable on the road. And then the living area is hands down THE best of any motorhome we have ever hired. They have a lot of living space, plenty of room in the toilet and bathroom area, beds that are set up all the time (saving the hassle of swapping the table for the bed every night) and heaps of storage both in the motorhome and in the garage area at the back. The battery power lasted for ages - we were able to freedom camp for 11 nights with only one plug in midway through to top it up - and the gas heating system kept us toasty warm even when it was snowing and -5 outside. Happy to rate them 5 star as they really are the best.

J.The motorhome we got is clean and tidy. The interior design is comfortable and has many hidden storage spaces that we don't need to worry about carring too many things on board. Driving it is so fun and the brake works very well, easy to control. The most important thing - kids love it.

c.What a great experience having a motorhome for the first time.
Firstly Georgia(hope I remembered the name correct) was great , efficient,very helpful and gave us some good advice.
Regarding the motor home , is very spacious , you have everything you need inside. The towels and linen were clean , bed super comfy. On the down side the plates and cutlery wasn’t very clean so we had to do it again before using them. And another thing , at the end there is a $8.40/ 100 km to be paid on top of the daily rate which we didn’t know about. Might be advertised on the website or not, we’re not sure but it’s good to know as it is an extra expense.
Overall we were very happy and we will hire again from Wilderness Motorhomes.

C.Fantastic customer experience. The reception was welcoming and organised, our motor home was prepared, exceptionally clean, with lots of nice little touches. We were briefed about how everything worked and we were on our way. We had a minor technical issue, which was handled professionally, and everybody who said they would phone back, did so , and in the end we managed to sort it out. But actually that left us feeling even better than before because of the support. Again, we were welcomed back on our return, and the hand back was efficient and super friendly. Thank you team.
V.Staff were professional and friendly. Very helpful when we had some minor issues. The WiFi hardly worked the whole time. We were meant to hear back from manager for a WiFi refund but have had no contact. Also the camper had a few minor issues which should have been checked prior to us picking up. But all in all a great holiday.

From the time we booked in Auckland over a year ago, to the time we dropped off our motorhome in Christchurch, after our three week tour of the South Island, everything was spot on.
A.Our experience with Wilderness was fantastic! Overall, we loved our time in the Wave 2 motorhome from start to finish. Customer service was excellent! Even before getting to NZ, they helped me immediately with changes to my itinerary and extras. On the road assistance was also immediate and beneficial, I called them 3 times at least for help. We only had minor issues with our van that did not impact our travel experience. The van was clean and super convenient! We would book with Wilderness again in the future :)
J.This was our very first time using a Motorhome, Wilderness made our experience easy and we left confident knowing we're in good hands. We hired the Compact Plus that suited my wife and I, as a 6'4" tall bloke I had no issues standing inside or sleeping in the Kingsize bed.
The Motorhome handled the twisty roads of the Coromandal with ease and freedom camping was excellent. Everything is provided and the appliances worked as expected. We were very suprised how little LPG gas we actually used when Freedom camping, hot shower and a cold fridge not an issue.
We highly recommend using Wilderness if you are thinking exploring NZ, since we got back home to Australia we are now planning a South Island Adventure!
H.We had the 'Double for 4' for 3 weeks over April/May and had a ball touring the North Island, clocking up 2800km. The motorhome exceeded our expectations, it's extremely well appointed. A decent sized fridge/freezer, gas cooktop with oven and grill all worked great. One of the things we were looking for was a permanent bed. The island at the rear suited us just fine, swiveling captain's chairs added to our comfortable travel and living. The bathroom door can close off the rear making a bedroom suite with shower on one side and toilet/bathroom the other side. Underfloor ducted heating is excellent when needed. The huge storage boot underneath at the rear held all our luggage plus two e-scooters , folding chairs and barbecue easily. Being over 7m long the motorhome is not a small machine but drives really well and isn't hard to find parking for in most places. We took advantage of freedom camping for all but 4 nights, ranging from beachside to riverside to lakeside. NZ is such a beautiful country we can't wait for the same time next year when we plan on 4 weeks ex Christchurch. Wilderness impressed with their service and the Double for 4 is great, well done and great to support NZ owned businesses. See you in 2022. Steve and Annie Sangster
B.We rented a Wilderness Motorhome for 9 days to explore the Catlin region of the South Island. While the weather was cool and damp, the motorhome was warm and cozy. The quality of the motorhome was high class, clean and well stocked with cooking equipment, bedding and towels. Communication with Wilderness was awesome, everything was just so easy. R.I’ve rented vehicles all over the world and this was probably the best experience I’ve had. My wife and I rented a Vista 2 which was like new. We were picked up from our hotel, asked about our itinerary and given great suggestions for our journey around the North Island and were showed all of the vehicle features. Not only was the setup flawless, we had a technical question while on the road and quickly got an answer by calling the customer support. We looked around at a few different campervan rental agencies before booking and Wilderness had the highest rating and for good reason. They treat you excellent and give you a fantastic vehicle. We had a great time and hopefully soon can come back to explore the South Island. When we do we’ll 100% be booking with Wilderness again 😀
s.Great customer service , reasonable price for a modern 2 Berth Motorhome! Staff were awesome on pick up and drop off. We normally go with a competitor but will choose Wilderness if price competitive for sure!
P.Hired Motorhome recently for 2 people (king/twin for 2)- Felt at home with it with regard to comfort level. Good instructional videos if you are new to Motorhomes. In built Wi-Fi (optional)- using wireless Nation Sim is useful but found minimal coverage in most areas I travelled as I found 2 degrees (in my phone) had better reception where coverage was available. Would be good if freeview is available as a TV is available but only for DVD play in the one I hired. The Wilderness staff at pick up and drop off were excellent and extremely helpful. Looking forward for my next trip soon.
R.My wife and I had the pleasure of hiring a wilderness campervan for a fantastic 2 week holiday in our beautiful South Island in November. I would recommend this company if you need a late model campervan then Wilderness campers is the company you need to call. ,The vehicles are well serviced and maintained We will be back to do it again next year, counting down the days.....

I would allow 2 hours to pick up and factor that into my first day.

T.Lovely accommodation and support from the team whenever needed. We had some issues with the clips on some items however given the vibrations on the roads it is not unreasonable for this to occur. Also experienced faults with the van when driving but was given quick access to a car repairer who confirmed all was safe to continue. Due to loss of time we where compensated with no prompting from us as a good will gesture.
Overall we had a trip of a lifetime and never felt alone when help was required. We would recommend wilderness' service to anyone wanting to explore the vast landscapes on NZ.

We were late back because of a bad motor vehicle accident. Called staff who were helpful and positive and welcoming back. All in all it was a great experience. One bit of advice... please spend more time with us ‘first-timers’ at pick up. We were a bit lost finding out how to use all of the things in the van. I didn’t find the towels until we were dropping off the van!

G.We, a UK couple, rented a Wilderness Escape 4 Motorhome for five weeks from the end of January to early March 2014. This was a first for us and we were delighted with the experience. We picked up the van in Christchurch and reluctantly returned it in Auckland after a memorable journey through both islands. The van was what we had been promised - comfortable, reliable, very well equipped and easy to drive. The cruise control was excellent and came in for a lot of use. Reversing required more care but got easier with practice. The Wilderness staff in Christchurch explained the workings of the van thoroughly and gave us the extra towels and bed linen we requested. The living accommodation in the van was excellent for two people with lots of storage room. We did quite a lot of self catering using the three burner gas stove. The fridge and freezer, microwave and toaster were all useful. One slight niggle with our van was that the fuel ignition warning light was on constantly - caused apparently by the quality of NZ diesel. A couple of phone calls from Wilderness reassured us that all was well and the van behaved perfectly...........
C.Was thinking of buying a motorhome so wanted a pleasant experience in one and that's exactly what we got. I could absolutely live in the vehicle provided. It drove beautifully with an incredible and smooth automatic gearbox. Really economical on diesel too. There was a very minor problem of one of the seatback cusions falling off because the velcro was a bit tired. Thought there would be opportunity to mention it on return but the return process was so simple and only took about 2 minutes so I forgot to mention it.
C.A totally brilliant experience & ultimate holiday. The motor home was essentially brand new, luxurious & well set up for a family of 4. Beds were ultra comfy. The guys at wilderness took care of us professionally and with ease....pick up and drop off were efficient & they have thought of everything making it simple for us to just take off on our adventure around this stunning country. M.Myself and my husband have just returned from a month long road trip, taking in both the North and South Islands of gorgeous NZ. After doing lots of research we chose to hire our motorhome with Wilderness, and I am so glad we did.
Being from the UK, we had to book directly with Wilderness (none of the UK travel agents deal with Wilderness), but from the first e-mail I sent to them enquiring about our hire, the van, the logistics (picking up from Auckland and dropping off in Christchurch), insurance coverage, extras etc, I felt very confident we had picked the right company.
They offer a very personalised service, our e-mails were always answered immediately (less the time difference), and we always felt appreciated and not just like another renter who they wanted to take money from. They were extremely helpful in their responses, giving excellent advice about touring NZ. They gave us access to 2 excellent NZ guide books letting us plan our trip before arriving and even booked our Interislander ferry tickets.
We chose the Cruise 4 with full insurance. The van was excellent and well laid out with everything we needed, and looked fantastic. We had no problems at all, everything worked as it should and we had no issues during our travels, completing just over 2,500 miles during our trip.
Pick up and drop off was a breeze, and Tony in Auckland explained everything we needed to know before we set off.
I would highly recommend Wilderness to anyone looking to hire a motorhome in NZ, and if we returned would definitely hire again from Wilderness.

J.We picked up vans in both Christchurch and Auckland, staff at both sites were really helpful with handover of vehicle and helping us find our feet with motor home travel. Any issues which weren't big were quickly responded to and resolved. We grew to love both our vehicles and home on wheels which are very comfortable and very well equiped. Whilst on the road we met other travels who weren't having the experience we were enjoying and are very glad we spent that little bit extra and got a high quality vehicle. B.We can't say enough about the team support at Wilderness. The trip was amazing! It took time for us to become familiar with the van because we were "newbies" at it. But the Wilderness team was available for us any time of day for answering our questions and providing tips. Although we had an issue with the van for several days, Wilderness was there through the whole process and credited us for time lost on the road. In the Helix 2, the bed is incredibly comfortable. it was awesome looking out the skylight at night from the bed and seeing so many stars!! We would recommend Wilderness especially because their support team is so good!
M.We hired the Base Jumper 2 for two weeks in early September, driving from Auckland to Christchurch and everywhere in between. Right from the get go the service from Wilderness was unlike anything we'd experienced before. Staff were friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. Orientation to the van was extensive and we drove away knowing the how to operate the vans many features comfortably.
The van itself was in excellent condition despite being a slightly older model in their range. The diesel heating was amazing and kept us toasty during cold nights at a fraction of the cost of gas heating. The shower/toilet room acted as a drying area for clothes also thanks to the diesel heating. The van was designed inside and out to be off grid for extended periods of time, in comfort of course. We only plugged in twice during our trip and used only one gas bottle, for 14 days! Equipment in the van such as cooking utensils were extensive and good quality. I'd definitely hire with wilderness again. I wish they were in Australia!

A.Hired a wilderness campervan in October 2018 for 6 weeks travel around the South Island. Had an amazing trip no problems whatsoever, the camper drove smoothly with the power to accelerate when needed, very comfortable inside with all the mod cons, easy to operate all the compartments and easy to drive. Having self-contained facilities made the trip more exciting being able to explore everywhere with the option to freedom camp. Will def do it again!

I.Fantastic! Everything went really smooth, starting with a good coffee upon our entrance into the office and finishing with flawless return of the vehicle. The camper we had was in a top-notch condition, with only 12500-something on clock. Everything worked as it should have. The stuff was extremely helpful and professional. No wait, no queues, the van was there waiting for us as we came to pick it up. And it was the end of November! Absolutely flawless experience! Thank you, Wilderness team!
P.I enjoyed my time in the campervan I hired, and was impressed with the amount of "stuff" provided, i.e. crockery etc. My only concern was the difficulty experienced in locating the area in Takanini where grey water could be disposed of. It would be beneficial if there was signage/directions to the actual emptying area.
E.We had a great time with wilderness motor homes , we decided to support the locals after this Covid-19 and we had a great time getting out and exploring NZ for the long weekend ! We loved it we where a big group and they made it easy and they where really flexible in bringing the Motor Homes back after hours . D.The Wilderness team is certainly the best choice for camper van rental in New Zealand. That's from my experience and talking to other travelers we met on our trip. Our van was in great condition and fully equipped. The service from support staff before we went was really helpful - free guide on places to go and sites to stay at, quick and helpful replies by email on specific questions about the van and possible routes. This help at the planning stage really allows you to get the most out of your holiday once you arrive. The Wilderness vans can go anywhere. Either stay at the full facility holiday parks where you can plug in and use their power, some of the minimum facility Department of Conservation sites are in spectacularly wild locations, or just freedom camp where you please. The Wilderness vans are great for any of these options.
J.We couldn't have been any happier with our rental from Wilderness. Flavia and the team took exceptional care of our unique requests. We also accidentally broke off the external gray water pipe while backing up on the second to last day of our trip - and at that point we were very grateful we had elected for full coverage! The vehicle was impeccable, the recommendations for our trip spot-on. When we return to NZ, we will use this company every time. Worth every penny.

J.In January, 2014, we rented a Jumper Lite 2 Fiat 6 speed manual for a 3 1/2-week adventure starting in Auckland and ending in Christchurch. We had rented the same vehicle four years earlier, so we knew it met our needs completely. It is a little challenging shifting with the left hand, driving on the opposite side of the road from which we are used to, and crossing so many one-lane bridges (we counted 108) and one-lane tunnels (4). Adds to the adventure.
But what gets Wilderness ranked so highly is their friendly, outstanding service before, during, and at the end of our trip. They pay close attention to details that made such a difference.
As we were planning driving some remote roads, we opted for full insurance coverage, which also came with a GPS unit. We were glad we had the insurance when we had a little fender-bender on the “Forgotten World Highway.”
The GPS was quite useful, especially navigating in the cities. The guy with the Kiwi accent gave us advance warnings for turns, got us through roundabouts, and gave us good shortcuts that saved time and let us see the scenic countryside. Miss the little guy.
We had a few minor equipment glitches, but a quick call to Wilderness got them easily straightened out. We completely recommend them to anyone seeking a campervan for touring scenic New Zealand.
C.We really enjoyed our holiday! From the beginning to the end! The van was beautiful if a little flimsy (I guess it’s to save weight) the separate toilet and shower was great and the extendable bed at the back with the big windows and lots of lovely sky lights. It was really a beautiful experience that we would happily experience again! We weren’t as impressed with the north Island as we were with the South Island but the staff in Auckland were wonderful! Especially Fernando! Making the experience very friendly and funny and light hearted. We look forward to experiencing it all again one day!
C.We rented an Escape 4 for 3 1/2 weeks in Feb 2014 starting in Christchurch and ending in Auckland. The unit is well designed and comfortable. The second bed drops down from the ceiling, which gives a sleek design and better mileage. The refrigerator is large and operates on 12v, 240 or gas, allowing for more days without needing to connect to power.
The company is very responsive and helpful, and a minor electrical problem was resolved quickly. There are no "restricted roads" with this company.
It was a great experience and I highly recommend Wilderness.

P.My wife and I hired a Vista camper at Christchurch to Auckland, we had it for 8 days to cruise the East Coast. We had a couple of issues , but to be honest it was our fault. We made the mistake of plugging the heater into the invert socket , which in turn, blew the main battery power to the camper and the other was , when emptying the toilet we must have turned the shut out valve by mistake and tank would not go back in , so we could not do any freedom camping after the second day.I rang Christina about the fuse and she sent me a video on how to repair it. Not once but twice she rang to see if we needed further help in repairing the fuse , if not she was going to book the van in to a workshop for the work to be carried out, but we managed to fix it. I think the service that Christina provided for us was outstanding, you are certainly a credit to your company. My Wife and I would highly recommend using this company to our friends and anyone else who is in the process of doing a Road Trip around this lovely Country. Regards Phil Paul

Inside was a place for everything and more...The last surprise was the overall reliability and economy of the van and the ease of driving. All intuitive controls to hand including hands-free phone connectivity. All-in-all FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE. One we recommend and will experience again.

P.19 day hire touring West and East Coast North Island during Oct 2020, We drove 2,650 kms, avg 14 l/100 kms. 5 stars for the motorhome driving experience (loved the engine braking assist), 2 stars for the central island bed (needs base bracket to stop mattress slip, results in no support for lower legs & feet). 4 stars for the rest of the motorhome and its facilities (needs robust fridge handle). 5 stars for the admin team's caring service. 3 stars for the price (even when we booked at winter's reduced rates). Overall, we certainly enjoyed the adventure and experience :)
I.We took motorhome for 8 days and due to some issue we ended up wasting a day in Christchurch. Although they compensated us for that however the Campervans are very good overall with great facilities and easy pick up and drop off process. Would definitely return to this company when I come back as this was the highlight of our experience. Be through in checking all the equipments like Portable Barbeque etc. Book at least 2 months in advance.
P.We chose Wilderness primarily because of the quality of the vans. There were just two of us and we wanted a van that was big enough to be comfortable but not too big. The one we picked fitted the bill and better still when we picked it up, we found it to be brand new.
Our only issues were with the service on collection. We were given a rapid tour of the van and basically left to get on with our own devices. We had hired two bikes with the van which were already loaded onto the carrier. Fortunately I decided to take them off and check they were all set up right, which they werent, and then had to find someone with the necessary tools to sort out the seats. The guy was very willing but had no idea so I ended up taking the tools off him and sorting out the bikes myself. I also realised that the helmets hadnt been provided so had to go and find him again to get a couple of cycle helmets.
We were only provided with one set of sheets and pillowcases for 3 weeks which was a bit penny pinching. It would also have been good to have been provided with some basics for the van such as hand wash and washing up liquid. We obviously had to go and buy these at a supermarket and at the end of the hire ended up throwing away lots of half used things.
Other than these few issues, the van was excellent, performed everything we expected and the little luxuries of powered steps, led lighting in the cab, really comfortable driving seats and a large fridge freezer made it so comfortable to stay in that 3 weeks just flew by.
Although a bit on the expensive side, we thought it well worth the money, especially when we saw some of the other camper vans on our journey.
N.Very welcoming and excellent briefing with help booking the first stop. Motorhome very comfortable - excellent heating system and kitchen. Fun to drive. We had a wonderful tour of North Island and cannot wait to return and see South Island.
M.Had a great first time in a lovely motorhome. Good service and explanation checking in. Suggest taking out the extra insurance as broken windshields require customer to pay and North Island is notorious for broken windshields.
J.Very affordable RV rental for off-peak but a bit too pricey for high season, don’t seem to be interested in negotiating a rate for a regular monthly rental which is a real shame.
The fridge door didn’t lock properly so after 3 times putting everything back in the fridge after the lock released on a corner we jammed folded paper into it to keep it closed.
We could not get the stereo/hands free phone system to Bluetooth to our phones, luckily we took our UE Boom for music.
Make sure you take a sharp knife as the knives provided are super blunt. Also you need to take your own cleaning products e.g. spray and wipe, dishwashing liquid, soap etc.
The shower was awesome, water heated quickly and after you turn the hot water heating off it stays hot for ages. The heating is incredibly efficient, super warm and cosy vans.
We cooked in the van and found everything to be easy to use.
We didn’t like the reversing camera, it is angled straight down so you can only see the rear bumper and there are no sensors so quite scary reversing, best to have someone guiding you.
G.The staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble to help us with a purchase in the near future.
E.Amazing customer service and the motorhome was perfect for our holiday around NZ. The staff were welcoming and very helpful and thorough in explaining everything prior to us setting off on our journey. A special shout out to Fransisco and Fernando who were the best! B.We rented the Freedom 2 campervan from Wilderness for a month long exploration of both the north and south Islands. It was a fantastic experience from pick-up to drop-off and everything in between. They are unfailingly polite and professional. The campervan was in like-new condition and fully outfitted with everything we needed. We put over 5300 kilometers on the campervan and it drove great for all of them. The Freedom 2 was perfect for the two of us and probably spoiled us for future caravan trips We also commend the company for good communication during the tragic shooting as well as the floods and bridge collapse on the west coast.

s.My husband and I knew we were in good hands with Wilderness from the moment Francisco picked us up at our hotel. The check-in process was thorough, complete and professional. We had a 15-minute video that went over the workings of the camper van followed by time with Francisco to answer additional questions we might have.
We doubly knew we were in good hands because we traveled with friends who hired a van from another company. They were late in being picked up, were in a chaotic office and their rig was not ready for them as ours had been for us. Ann owner's manual was not in their camper van.
When the third couple joined the caravan we were triply impressed with Wilderness because our friends' experience with another company's checking in process and the condition of their van was at a much lower level than ours.
We've had reasons to be in contact with Wilderness during these first two weeks and have felt very well taken care of by all the employees we've talked with. Our impression of Wilderness as a company began with a very positive experience with Francisco and has continued to stay at this original level.
T.THIS IS A LONG REVIEW, but they deserve it!!!
Wilderness is THE place to rent your motorhome when you're in New Zealand. Even though the shuttle forgot us at the airport, we were told by Wilderness staff to catch a cab and they'd credit our account. The quick 6-minute trip brought us to the check-in where we were greeted warmly. Fernando was our check-in agent and he was great. Since we had to wait a few minutes for him to finish up with another family, we were offered either two bikes or free wifi for the duration of our trip. We chose the bikes (more on that later) and were given helmets/AMAZING bikes free of charge. The check-in process was super smooth and we got to "move into" our motorhome while he was finishing up with the other family. We watched a quick intro video which was helpful and got settled into our new digs. Fernando then walked us through the entire motorhome and how to empty/fill the tanks. He was very patient and answered all of our questions as we were first-time motorhomers. Once we were all set and ready to go, the staff waved us goodbye and we were off.
Our motorhome appeared to be brand new and it smelled clean. We had the Alpine 2 (which was AWESOME) and had it set up as a King bed. The bed was comfy and the linens were perfect. We cooked several times in the kitchen (which is small but functional) and the fridge was spacious enough to hold a 6pack of soda, 12 bottles of beer, snacks, fruit, cheese/meat, leftovers, and some ice cream in the freezer portion. The garbage is small and is on the side door so it's a little awkward when you have the door open for air but need to throw something away. The bathroom is like a Harry Potter closet, but honestly you don't really spend a lot of time in there. We never got to try the shower out, but it was spacious if we needed to. Your rental doesn't come with the basics like soap, detergent, paper towels, etc...so when you hit Countdown to stock up on supplies don't forget those!
Driving the motorhome was a lot of fun and very easy (remember, KEEP LEFT!). However, keep in mind they are huge and weigh a lot so braking/stopping takes longer. So about those bikes...it's a darn good thing we got them because even though we had the VIP package (which you REALLY should get!), we had to call AA road service because we got stuck in the mud. We came in hot to our freedom camping spot one night and didn't A) see the grass, B) expect it to rain....so when we woke up, we were stuck. $168NZD later and two trips down a huge hill on my bike just south of Ross on south island in the pouring freezing rain, we became "unstuck" and were on our way. Do note that the VIP package DOESN'T COVER AA ROAD SERVICE so don't get stuck...and make sure you park in an area that has wifi (or you have cell service) if you're freedom camping. Lesson learned.
The rest of the trip went without a hitch, and checking back in where we ended (we dropped off in Christchurch) was equally as awesome. We rolled in right at 2:30 (latest drop off) and fortunately were able to check it back in quickly. Do arrive early though, because you don't want the late fee and it gets very busy at the Christchurch location compared to Auckland. Keep track of anything that doesn't work right/you broke (oops!), or suggestions for them because they do take it seriously and will literally bend over backwards to help you. After you return your motorhome, anything you haven't opened and is non-perishable will be donated to charity by Wilderness. We "donated" the essentials to two new families going out: toilet paper and beer!
In the end, we LOVED our Wilderness experience and HIGHLY recommend them for all your motorhome needs. We said goodbye to "Wilda" who took care of us for 2415km (1500 miles) and it was definitely our dream holiday! Thank you Wilderness for being AWESOME!
P.After considerable research on a number of different companies to choose for our New Zealand adventure, we chose Wilderness on the basis of reviews, prices and the vehicles on offer. We are so glad we did!
We collected our Base Jumper 2 from the base in Christchurch and the staff were extremely helpful and welcoming right from the start. Our van was immaculately clean, a little older than we anticipated, but we liked the size and the layout.
We started by heading South and after two days found ourselves in Queenstown. Unfortunately, the weather changed and torrential rain revealed a significant leak through the windscreen onto the gear stick and pedals which made the van unusable. Obviously, problems happen, even with the best laid plans situations occur and that is understandable. However, what is really important is how problems are solved. We could not recommend Wilderness more for the instant and outstanding service that was offered when we experienced a problem. Isn't that the real test? Wilderness passed that test with flying colours! They immediately offered to pay for hotel accommodation for that night and arranged the following day for a new van to be delivered to us from Christchurch. We could not have asked for any more, however Wilderness did provide more. They sent a virtually new Breeze 2 which was their latest acquisition vehicles as a replacement. This van was outstanding! It was extremely easy to drive and the facilities on board were just perfect.
We would without any reservation fully recommend the service of Wilderness for anybody considering the significant investment of a campervan for touring New Zealand. While problems may happen, what really is important is to know that they will be solved quickly, without extra stress and with customer satisfaction the highest aim. Wilderness exceeded all our expectations in that regard. If you are considering renting a campervan, we would wholeheartedly recommend you choose Wilderness.

J.We rented the Vista 2 which is new to their fleet, we have never rent or drive a motorhome. Not only was our campervan new, but everything inside was too. Eating & cooking utensils, pots, pans, plates and cups. (If they weren't new, they were extremely clean) The pricing is not the cheapest out there, however the extra bit of money is all worth it. We went through our trip plans together with Rachel who made suggestions and recommendations using the Campable App - which was really helpful since some plans didn't go according to what we mapped out. Rachel also took the time to explain and give us a tour of the camper van to ensure we were comfortable with everything and knew how to use what.
The camper van is not to big so it was very easy to drive. My husband and I are in our early 30's, both on the slim side and under 6 feet, it's the perfect size because this camper is petite. The technology provided was great to use such as the Bluetooth sound system & navigation system. We really appreciated the unlimited wifi and SIM card as we were able to stay connected the whole time we were exploring.
Awesome staff from booking to drop off. We rented this campervan as part of our honeymoon we were greeted with coffee, tea & chocolates and then sent off to our journey with a complimentary bottle of wine.

I paid the full cover insurance and it was the right decision as I accidentally hit the rear bumper in a camping and damaged it. the Wilderness team were very helpful. Campervan conditions were really good, nice and clean.

A.What an awesome trip. We did a 3 week trip around the North Island in a Wilderness Motorhome, and if it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have been able to see it the way we did.
We opted to do the freedom camping thing, stayed in free motorhome sites etc most of the time, with a few paid motor camps for power and facilities when needed, and it made it more enjoyable. As some motor camps aren’t in the most ideal place and can be pricey especially if you don’t use all they have to offer.
The motorhome itself was awesome, and well worth the money. Everything worked and was easy to manage and use etc.
I can’t think of anything negative about our trip or the motorhome, and we are already looking at going back and doing the South Island this time.
If you have the opportunity to visit NZ and hire a motorhome, think of Wilderness, their vans are comfortable and a bit more fancy.
Can’t wait to book again.

H.Our family of 3 travelled around the South Island in an Escape 4. What a lovely vehicle to have with us! It was super comfortable for seating and sleeping, the heating was excellent, we even had to turn it down a little as it worked so well, although looking out the windows at the snow falling around us and not being cold inside was superb! The kitchen has everything you would need and I loved that the mugs and glasses weren't plastic! We had so many other campers coming over and asking about the vehicle to which we proudly recommended the team at Wilderness Motorhomes. The whole experience from the booking, payment, pre-arrival enquiries and handover of the vehicle were handled beautifully. The staff are super friendly and nothing appears to be too much trouble. Just back after spending three weeks in one of their Base Jumper campervans. Great van, long life battery, you can be quite independent from campsites if you wish to.

A.We traveled for 25 days in Wilderness campervans in both the South and North Islands in November, 2013. All in all Wilderness’ customer service far exceeded our expectations. We began by picking up an older Base Jumper 2 campervan in Christchurch. Our choice was based in part on the relatively low rental price and configuration of this older model – we had no problems with the driving/mechanical aspects of the van – we did have problems with the camper part. For example, the diesel heater that heats the camper section broke twice during our journey and the last repair shop said it was beyond repair – it was so-cold at Mt. Cook National Park! Also the fan/vent for the cooktop did not work, and the large sliding side door of the camper would not close from the inside – you had to do it from the outside with lots of inward force on the door. After calling Wilderness to describe our problems, they were very supportive, and went so far as to provide us, at no additional charge, with a new upgraded campervan – the Escape 2. One of their drivers drove 300 miles (500 kms) from Auckland to Wellington with the new van – that is outstanding customer service! So even though we had problems with the older van we were very satisfied with Wilderness, due to their responsiveness to our phone calls, quickly getting us into two repair shops that tried to remedy the problems. Then when it was clear that the original campervan was not going to work for us, delivering a new upgraded Escape 2 for the rest of our trip. The Escape 2 is an outstanding campervan – love the fact it has a permanent bed – and the appliances are first class, we had no problems at all with the Escape 2. In summary, dealing with Wilderness’ management (customer service and operations) about the issues we have described, was a breath of fresh air in corporate responsibility. We applaud this company for their seriousness in assuring customer satisfaction...........

We had a very warm welcome at the Auckland airport and a thorough instruction for the campervan (Base Jumper 2) at the base. The campervan was clean and in very good condition. All equipment worked without any problems. The GPS was a big help. We enjoyed the possibility to stay overnight at special places outside any compground due to the self contained campervan. The hired BBQ was brand-new. We had no problems at all with the campervan during our more than 3 weeks trip. The welcome at the Christchurch base was also very hearty.
All around a perfect trip to wonderful places in N.Z.

P.New Zealand is the best place to visit so we decided to enjoy our vacation there and we wanted to do it in a very different way. Therefore, the campervan / motor home was our choice to travel in NZ and the search started. We booked our motor home with Wilderness on the basis of reviews. From beginning i.e. from enquiry to booking, including our changes in dates their response was prompt. Twice we had changed our booking dates and the change was hassle free.
We booked motor home from 24th April to 10th May’2017.
We never drove motor home so there was anxiety about driving. We booked Peak – 4. There was a warm welcome by Ms. Kerstin. She took us to our Peak 4 Motor Home. We saw Peak 4 and fell in love. Peak 4 was quite spacious for 4 adults and it had lot of storage space and one different cabin for luggage.
The kitchenware items assured to us were provided. There was a beautiful mini kitchen having all required facilities.
Ms. Kerstin showed all facilities which were in Peak 4. We were little nervous since we never drove such a big vehicle. We asked her lot of questions regarding vehicle parts, fuel of vehicle, how to recognise diesel pumps etc; and the snow chains also though there was no snow. But she cleared our doubts very patiently.
Ms. Kerstin accompanied us on our request in motor van for a round.
There were no hidden charges. We had opted for full coverage so it was a worry free tour.
We drove from Auckland to Christchurch. We four enjoyed driving the motorhome. The vehicle is automatic and very easy to get conversant with. We could visit North / South NZ as per our plan because of our sturdy, superb & faultless Peak 4. So we definitely recommend Wilderness vehicles.
Our Choice was right & the best choice. We give wilderness 5 out of 5. In future too, if we plan to visit NZ we will definitely opt for Wilderness vehicle.
A.In 29 days around New Zealand in a Wilderness Escape 4 Campervan, a fascinating experience!
In November/December 2013 we undertook a 29-day round trip through both the North and South Island, starting from Auckland and closing at Christchurch. We chose an Escape 4 Campervan from Wilderness Motorhomes for this trip as we preferred a vehicle that does not look like a box-type van but still contains separate beds and ample space for the two of us. The Escape 4, built on a Fiat Ducato with a powerful 2.3L turbo diesel engine, is a wonderful and very elegant motorhome, easy to drive, almost like a VW Beatle. Its interior is very sophisticated and of state-of-the-art design, very enjoyable to live in, equally on sunny and rainy days. The Escape 4, produced by Buerstner in Germany, not only offers every comfort expected, it also has a lot of storage space for its passengers. We appreciated the large refrigerator/freezer, the microwave and the central heating that all worked perfectly, to mention just three very positive points amongst many others. Wilderness Motorhomes are an excellent company with a very friendly staff, ready for assistance round the clock and giving good advice, making the trip even more enjoyable. During the 29 days, we drove about 5300 km but still had enough time to visit all the attractions on our way. The only drawback of our trip through New Zealand was the time limit to one month for our holidays. We would have preferred to continue our trip with the Escape 4 for another month to see even more of beautiful New Zealand or to have time for the one or the other full-day hike. A reason to return to New Zealand for another trip in a Buerstner campervan. Taken together, the time with the Escape 4 by Wilderness Motorhomes was a great experience!

C.Very helpful throughout our stay. Any queries or issues resolved without any fuss. The motor home was in good order and with some minor issues which did not affect our trip. All staff we had contact with were friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend. Only negative was the additional insurance which is expensive and be prepared for a hard sell on this. Suggest people negotiate the insurance as it is a bit steep in our opinion.
N.Last year we travelled the South Island with Wilderness, it was so good that this year we are back and travelling through the North Island!. The Breeze 2 we rented is just perfect for a couple. S...............My wife and I did spend 23 days in December and January 2013/14 in Wilderness smallest camper (Dart 2) and it worked like a charm. We stayed 7 days on the North Island (started in Auckland then Coromandel, Rotorua, Taupo, Napier and down to Wellington) and the rest of the time on the South Island (from Farwell Spit to Milford Sound and ended up leaving the car in Christchurch). The Dart is a handy car that get's you almost anywhere and the Wilderness team was very helpful and we are indeed very happy that they persuaded us to rent bikes! I really appreciated that they did not restrict us to sealed roads since some of our best experiences was to be found along gravel roads!..........
S.Oct. 2014...........Two US adults citizens rented an Escape 4 Motorhome in Christchurch, New Zealand drove around the South Island for over a week, then took the ferry(with the camper) to the North Island eventually turning it in in Auckland.
"Stewey" as we called him(named after a hilarious Kiwi road worker we met), performed flawlessly and we had a truly fabulous experience. We are recommending Wilderness Motorhomes to everyone here back home.
We freedom camped high up in the mountains many nights and heating was never an issue at all. The Wilderness motorhome had a gas heater providing central heating at night and we were warm and toasty(being from Florida we needed heat at night).
"Stewey" really drove like a dream even though I was driving on the wrong side of the road for about three weeks! We like the large fridge, the gas stove, and even the microwave(which we used when at a powered site). Overall, the kitchen area and the entire camper served us very well. Loved the swivel front seats and wow, where they comfortable.
Being only two of us we slept in the "normal" downstairs bed most of the time, but we did sleep up top just to try it on a few nights.
We sure wouldn't hesitate to rent from Wilderness again and can only hope we get that opportunity. Many thanks to Wilderness motorhomes for what I hope is not a once in a lifetime amazing experience. I'll be sharing some pics on the Wilderness facebook site.
While not a stranger to camping, I was a noob at campervans, but found everything easy to learn and use. I am an Engineer, so I might have a slight advantage there, but still.............they explained everything very well and we didn't have to call them once. :)..........
J.Hands down the best motorhome rental company in New Zealand. I spent a few days doing research on the different types of motorhomes and campervans available and Wilderness offers the most beautiful ones you'll find out there. It really feels like your home on the road -- from the beds with memory foam matress to the amazing cabinet space (with uber cool handles that function as locking mechanisms). It drives like a car and really stands out when when you're out on the road with other motorhomes. German-quality at its best. When it comes to support, they can't be beat either. Let's just say even when things go wrong, they still get it right. We had some electrical issues on a weekend and we were able to get the help we needed with a quick call. When we returned the vehicle, Fernando was such a great guy to work with -- I came in with a problem and he had a solution for it. He was able to keep me calm and resolve the issue.

On arrival into Auckland, Wilderness got us up and going without any fuss for what was the end of the week and end of day pickup for them. (Late Saturday)

The Tom Tom navigator is a must for anyone traveling in an unknown territory, and for those of us returning after many a year gone, especially when getting down to streets in a town I have never lived in let alone driven (add this as a must have!)
After having travelled to and from hospital to hospital it was time to depart NZ, and on the way back to Auckland the RV had a clutch failure. This is where Wilderness exceeded all expectations! After having pulled over and calling the office I was advised to call the road side assist as detailed when having picked up the RV.......long and short of it is we got back to Wilderness motorhomes depot with the RV and its failed clutch, we were advised that they had arranged a motel, station wagon, and a complementary bottle of vino in apology for the RV having failed 1 day short of our trip (all be it on an family emergency)
Thankyou Wilderness Motorhomes for all you had done for us in what was a very stressful time returning home to NZ. We have already informed friends who are heading to NZ to use your exceptional services.
And yes we will be coming back with the children and renting another RV from you for our holiday!

G.We both thoroughly enjoyed our trip to NZ and just loved the Wilderness motorhome. The gas heater worked really well and had plenty of lovely hot water for showers which was great in the minus temperatures. For us, our favourite place was when we enjoyed a couple of nights freedom camping at Lake Pukaki (near Twizel) (we found the place thanks to the Wildernessts camping directory).
Even on icy roads like when we headed into Arthur’s Pass and also our trip into Arrowtown and Akoroa on the windy and steep roads the vehicle drove really well.

J...............Wow! We spent our honeymoon touring both the south and north islands. We had 28 days to spend and had considered renting a car and staying in hostels and hotels, but decided the freedom of having a camper outweighed option one. I researched campervans on this website and a few others and decided that Wilderness was our best bet. I contacted them a few times before booking with random questions and the team always responded in a kind a professional manner. Once I finally booked our camper (Breeze 2) we were fully supported and had all of our questions answered. I felt very comfortable with our decision before we even boarded the plane.
Once we landed in CHC, we were picked up at the airport and taken to our new home. We were given a wonderful tour of our camper by Natalia. We also sat down and signed paperwork. When they ask if you want full coverage, get it! Our windshield got a chip on the second day! So the full coverage paid for itself on day 2. Once we did a quick practice run, we were off on our trip. The van was well-equipped and was mechanically sound. Our entire trip (8,000+ kms) could not have gone better. The van performed as advertised and exceeded our expectations. Cooking in the van was a breeze (pardon the pun). I cant describe how pleased we were with how the van performed. It also looked very good, people on the ferry even asked to take a picture of it! We were asked multiple times where we hired our camper and we gladly told them. The only thing that was better than the performance of the van was the quality of the service. We picked up in CHC and dropped off in AKL so we got to experience both teams and I can honestly say that the service was exceptional. It was a great experience and I would not have any concern recommending this company to anyone who is considering a camper hire. I actually would advise that they only hire Wilderness...........

M.Hmmm. Struggled to rate this. Fantastic company overall, but basically one thing really concerns me - that we were (initially) sent away with a broken baby car seat. The seat wouldn't recline, but staff said that was all they had. We tried it, but baby in unsafe position. To be entirely fair we returned to Wilderness and they went to a local store and purchased a new car seat for us to use. I think this is such an important safety point that I have to comment on it I'm afraid - I hope a clear process of checking seats back in has been established and checking they are fully functional. Also - the van could have done with a Tin/Can opener. Other than that we had a fantastic trip in our van, and overall I would recommend the company to rent from.

One tip:- we bought a vodafone travel sim in duty free at Auckland (saves $10!) and used Campermate phone app to find campsites, dumpstaions etc including lots of "official" freedom camping spots. Works offline if no signal.

Comenzamos en Christchurch con la caravana que estrenamos nosotros!!! Después el recorrido por ambas islas... Inolvidable!!
El trato recibido por la compañía Wilderness ha sido siempre el mejor. Primero con la calidad de la autocaravana, segundo porque hemos necesitado de ayuda durante el viaje por algún incidente con el espejo retrovisor, pinchazo,... Y la atención prestada ha sido magnífica!! Gracias a Flavia pudimos pasar en el Ferry porque si no nos llega a avisar del problema que había de disponibilidad de plazas... GRACIAS FLAVIA!!
Al dejar la caravana en Auckland, lo mismo otra vez, Sophia nos atendió muy bien y como teníamos el seguro a todo riesgo contratado, pues absolutamente ningún problema por los pequeños daños que tenía la autocaravana al devolverla... Una recomendación al resto de usuarios, conducir la autocaravana no es muy difícil, pero sí es un vehículo más ancho y más largo... Si a esto añades conducir por la izquierda (eso es lo más difícil con diferencia... un consejo, para conducir por la izquierda lo más sencillo es empezar seguir/hacer lo que hagan los demás) ... Lo mejor es que contratéis el seguro total, que aunque sea más caro, luego lo agradeces en tranquilidad y facilidad a la hora de devolver la caravana!!
En general, un 10 para todo el equipo de Wilderness y si te cruzas con otra Wilderness en el camino... Saluda!!!
