Reviews of Maui Motorhome Rental Christchurch
E.
Super efficient and friendly pick up and drop off experience. The 6 Berth Maui was like new, spotless and drove beautifully. Everything is supplied and we were so glad to have a Camper instead of a tent in the torrential rain in the middle of our holiday. Set up and pack down was easy and fast - the awning is brilliant for both rain and sun shelter. 100% would recommend and will do again asap.
S.
We really enjoyed touring the South Island in our Maui 6 berth campervan and would do it again.
Pickup Experience (8/10) - The agency was easy to find and checkin very slick with no wait time - the handover is very quick so make sure you preview the THL videos before the pickup in case you have any questions. They forgot to add the bike rack but this was rectified quickly. This agency has a shop too with all sorts of great campervan extras if you need them.
Driver Experience (10/10) - The Mercedez engine is a workhorse and easily coped with the South Island roads. There are lots of driver assistants built into the navigation system and instrument cluster which come in handy like a speed limiter, hairpin bend warnings, speed zone warnings, and even a hidden crosswind assist which worked remarkably well in one case! The cabin generates a lot of noise, especially on older roads so buy a roll of rubber drawer liner to place under the pans, kettle etc which are loosely secured. The biggest clanging noise came from the microwave plate so we removed it and stored it in a teatowel whilst driving. You will need a USB-C to Lightning cable for Apple phones in the driver cockpit.
Passenger Experience (7/10) - Our two passengers sat in the seats located behind the driver. The seats are comfy, but worth taking a cushion for the longer trips. The seatbelt anchor straps are quite long so the buckle can be uncomfortable for kids. We left the table setup all the time so passengers could play card games etc during our long driving sections (although unsure if this is recommended), there is no beading on the table edge to stop things from sliding around so we attached a plastic tub to the table top with 3M strips to hold stuff like pens, cards and drink bottles. There is lots of cabin noise whilst driving so its difficult to talk with the driver from here without using hand gestures.
Sleeping Experience (8/10) - There is plenty of bedding and towels provided. There is a good size double bed at the rear which takes a bit of getting used to, if you are more than 6ft 2inch you will struggle to sleep comfortably though. The other two beds are somewhere between a large single and a double so are perfect for two kids but only one adult. With practice making-up the beds takes 10 mins per bed and 10 mins to put each away each day. The overhead bed stays out permanently and also provides a good hangout for kids. The window blinds are very good allowing you to sleep in if you like. The diesel heater keeps the cabin set at a sleeping temperature of your liking, but there's an extra electric heater if you need it.
Living Experience (8/10) - It takes a little co-operation, patience and courtesy to be able to move around in the living area, eventually this becomes second nature. There are lots of main and reading lights to use. The insect netting on the windows and doors are very good at keeping out the sandflies especially useful when you need some fresh air. The toilet spins on its axis so you can sit comfortably, the shower is pretty cramped but has good water pressure. You need to switch on the LPG for the water heater to work though. We would recommend using the holiday park showers and their toilets for number twos whenever possible. Unfortunately there are limited (2) USB charging points so buy yourself a couple of power adapter with additional USB charging ports. The mains power sockets will only operate when connected to a powered site.
Dining Experience - There is plenty of storage space for cooking ingredients, although buy some tubs to help keep the little things organised and from sliding about. The worktops are a good size, and the LPG stove is very good, we even cooked pizza under the grill. Our sink didn't have a plug but this wasn't so bad as we used the holiday park facilities mostly. Most campervan sites are not level so be prepared for an uneven worktop and dining table, we saw some experienced campers use ramps to level out their campervan, these would be a great edition for Maui to provide with every campervan.

Absolutely LOVED it.. very clean, sheets and blankets all nice and clean. Pick up was easy PRICE WAS AMAZING and affordable hopefully they stay that price for NZers so we can travel our country more often. Perfect amount of room for 4 kids and 2 adults.. comfy beds and crockery set out great. 1 thing though - I panicked a little not being able to find the key lock box at 6am in the morning so I had to leave keys in the camper and my anxiety went through the roof thinking of how safe it was .. maybe label the box key return I did look around but frantically so apologies if I did miss the box there was one with key to unlock I tried and no luck. So easy to drive and comfortable to drive. Overall 10/10

Hired the van for two weeks out and back to Christchurch. Loved the whole experience. We ended up leaving the bed permanently rigged. Bit of a faff otherwise. Few minor items were dealt with quickly by Maui and needed to replace the battery in the CO monitor to stop it beeping every 10 seconds with flat battery. Other than that the holiday was terrific.
V.
The camper overall was great. Drove really well. We travelled just over 1500kms in seven days. I think they could improve the experience by adding a gas toaster and jug to use for when you are not plugged into 240v also a thicker mattress would be great for the beds, after six nights I was hanging out for my own bed. Would do again in a heartbeat.

Recently my wife and I took our first camper van adventure down through West Coast, Wanaka and Lake Tekapo and while nervous about this at first we had an awesome time and have already started to plan our next trip. My concerns were that the camper van would be to old, to slow, to small and really hard to drive and set up on the trip, but in actual fact it was modern, clean, well appointed and a breeze to drive and set up even stopping for a cuppa in a remote location took minutes. We had the Venturer 2 birth camper van and would definitely hire one again.
S.
Hiring a campervan and driving from Queenstown to Christchurch has to have been one of the best experiences we've ever had! It was big enough for the three of us, comfortable to sleep in (once we got used to it) and a really smooth drive. Love the idea of being able to stay where and when you want and not be dictated by pre-booked accommodation. would highly recommend a campervan holiday.
J.
We had a great time , pick and drop off was very efficient and easy .Spend 9 days in West Coast and upper north of South Island. The vehicle was very cleaned and easy to drive .Great service from staff at Christchurch. Keep up the good work .
N.
We had the Mercedes Sprinter 7m Camper-van fully self-contained (which we upgraded to on the day of pick up), and it was perfect. It had everything we needed, and more. Absolutely the way to take in the beauty that is our country, being able to literally pull up anywhere and set up for the day, and move around at your own time and pace. We would absolutely recommend this to anyone whose considering hiring or buying on. We will definitely be doing another trip later this year. The booking, pick up and drop were all so easy and user friendly information provided throughout. We also recommend taking up the Express return package on offer, it was so simple. Sending this from my computer and photo's are on my phone, so no pic's sorry. Thank you Maui Christchurch
D.
Easy to hire from website to pickup and drop-off. Clean, easy on the diesel. We travelled 1925km in 7days and had a fantastic time. Only complaint is the bed "mattress" if it had been slightly bigger foam that would have made a great deal of difference for sleep. If >5.9ft beware the length is not fab...
C.
Had an awesome trip up to Abel Tasman and the 2+1 birth van was perfect! With the solar panels on top and the good weather, we only had to plug in once throughout the week and probably didn't even need to do that which helped save us heaps at campsites!
It drove really well, especially getting up the hills and tight corners. While the bed was sturdy, it was super comfortable and a great fit for the two of us and leaving it up all the time worked well for us. Using all the van facilities was easy and the videos were great for helping us out especially with the gas cooker inside.
Overall great experience and just waiting for my next trip! 10/10 would do again and can't wait to recommend to all our friends.
J.
We did a trip down west coast and on to te anau then to queenstown tekapo and Hanmer springs...was AMAZING and camper was awesome meet up with friends doing the east coast of South Island met in queenstown and traveled onwards together.
Second camper holiday and until the borders open its the way to go.
Great support and apps to help.LOVED IT RECOMMEND TO ALL
We have such a beautiful country.

Had a great trip Queenstown to Christchurch July this year. The Vehicle was great easy to drive , everything thought of , very warm bedding and comfy beds. Highly recommend . I think that in this Covid environment we can often find ourselves stood down from work or placed onto annual leave. So we seized the moment even though it is cold in the South Island but even still we had many sunny days the rain only fell once and that’s was while we slept , so glad we went. Tekapo and Queenstown are stunning anytime of year as are the clay cliffs of Omarama. The small centres and towns around NZ still need visitors so now is a great time to travel.NZ is full of hidden gems like Maori cave art and natural wonder of the only mainland Albatross colony in the world . Having accomodation on wheels makes the journey easy and its always nice having a hot tea after an outing without having to drive to get one.
K.
We have had a quick 5 day holiday in the South Island. Coming from the North Island via flight, it was so easy and simple to check in, not worry about anything we had forgotten on the van. Also the linen and provided equip was excellent . The van was easy to drive by my husband and I in all conditions. Shuttle back to the airport was a lovely finish to a wonderful break. Would do it again instantly, thank you to THL .
J.
We rented a 3berth Maui for our road trip across the south island and it was a great experience from booking to drop off. The vehicle itself was better than we imagined, spotlessly clean, well equipped, and a pleasure to drive (despite being a 7m long van). We also all slept really well including the 3 year old. The rooftop vent was really useful because there was a screen keeping the sanflies out and kept us cool at night (none of the rear windows open). We had 2 nights on non-powered sites and the battery kept the fridge going the whole time. Our only minor complaint was the way vehicle training was provided via video, and you had to search for specific videos if you wanted to know how to do something (I.e. how to turn on the hot water, open the fuel tank). It would have been better if they could have had someone spend 30 minutes with us at pick up to show us some essential functions. Highly recommend the 3berth Maui for small families - we had an amazing family adventure!
M.
Pick up and drop off process are impressively efficient. It would be even faster if we watch all the videos in advance. Thl road trip app is highly recommended which gives us all the info. I recon it is even useful in general travel not only camper van trip. Such a great tool!!!
The campervan is so easy to be driven. Nice and warm by running the diesel heater for only couple hours at night.
We were so lucky for having the nice weather for the entire trip. Will definitely do this again!
P.
This was our second year of hiring a Maui campervan for our South Island holiday. Another superb trip. Everything from booking right through to hand back of the van was outstanding. Staff are great and the van excellent. Highly recommended.
P.
We have just had the best holiday and part of the thanks goes to THL and Maui Campervans. Right from the start communication was timely and informative. The pricing was very affordable and the camper itself delivered everything we needed to just load up our personal stuff and go. And when we needed to extend our holiday due to unforeseen circumstances there was no problem keeping the camper for a few extra days - just a quick phone call, no drama, all sorted.
I would highly recommend these guys and yes, we will be back for our next holiday.
A.
We had a fantastic 2 weeks with the Maui van. Pick up was efficient and the van drove really well and was very comfortable. Everything worked well and we thought the van was well-equipped. It was super easy to fill up with water, empty waste etc and the videos to watch in advance were really helpful and led to a quicker check out. Check in was also really quick and the staff member extremely efficient, friendly and helpful. All in all we loved the experience and are even now talking about buying a van at some point in the future!
So why four stars?
The van was not overly clean. We found bits of food in the storage area under the seats in the rear of the van. The seats were badly marked but I can see why they get quickly worn given the use they get and with them also being used to make up the beds. A minor thing but perhaps a wooden spoon would add to the cooking utensils and a grater too!
My main issue was with the external condition of the vehicle. There was a reasonable amount of damage to it that wasn't noted on the sign-out report. Some repairs had been poorly done and other damage just hadn't been repaired. As you probably know, you pay more with Maui to get a newer vehicle. I did my research on the insurance waiver which for rentals I always buy separately at a fraction of the cost. However, having done some research and not finding a product that matches the Maui 'inclusive' cover we decided to take out this option which is very expensive but does give peace of mind. Given the amount that THL must be making from this cover it was really disappointing to see that the vehicle had not been repaired properly and had been hired with unrepaired damage.
n.
Staff at Maui Christchurch rental is awesome especially Ben and James, so patient and helpful and made our first time experience very easy. Leaving 4 stars here just becoz the Motorhome was not in a great condition, experienced lot of noise while driving from the sun roof window and the cupboards getting open by themselves every now and then which was a hazard.

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful 3 weeks in the South Island. We didn't realize just how amazing the scenery really is in the SI having not done a lot of traveling in that area. So many of the places we visited and photos that we took didn't do it justice.
We started out travels by flying to CHC from NPE to pick up our hired 4 berth Maui Cascade motorhome. The CHC RV hub was humming. The motorhome was near new and had only done 39k. It had all the bells and whistles and a drop down bed which was a real bonus. We are so pleased that we booked a 4 berth as the room inside was ample for 2 adults. The vehicle was really easy to drive and didn't miss a beat apart from a jammed side door lock that we got fixed in ZQN. It was our first experience in a motorhome and at some stage I am sure we will repeat the process. We stayed at holiday parks that had a sealed power site and at the time Top 10 had a deal with THL. We would like to thank THL for making this awesome holiday experience in one of your vehicles possible. What a brilliant idea to drop the prices so that Kiwis could afford to visit our own country and that the motorhomes weren't sitting idle in the THL yards. We certainly wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise. The picking up of the vehicle, instruction and the return of it was seamless. Thank you THL to help make our fantastic holiday so memorable. Hopefully you can offer another deal in 2021 so that other Kiwis can do what we experienced, if overseas tourists still aren't able to be here.

This is our first experience on a 6 berth Maui rental for 1 week with a family of 5. Waiting time to pick up our camper was well within very reasonable time. None of us in the family get bored during the waiting time, there are drawing available for the kids, magazine and tv for the adults. The branch is very clean and spacious. The Staff who served us at the reception was very friendly and helpful. Everything was well explained.
Condition of the camper is good, nice and tidy. Very comfortable sleeping in the camper and it has most thing provided in the camper, from wine glasses, can opener to brush and dustpan. During the trip we have no major issues with our camper. Only 1 minor issue was the dvd does not work on the TV, but that isn’t a big deal for us anyway. It will be good if a better quality of the reverse camera able to display better quality of image.
Returning the camper was smooth and easy.
Overall it was a fantastic experience for us and how we wished we rented a longer period. It is hard to stop sharing and recommending Maui to our friends and family about our experience. Wish to do this again!
F.
I had an awesome experience with Britz and the service provided during the two weeks I rented a motorhome to travel around the South Island of New Zealand. I'd highly recommend Britz campers to anyone looking to have an amazing experience traveling around NZ with all the comfort you have at home. THANKS to Carolina and Mavis for the great customer service provided as well as to those friendly team members that spoke to me on the phone while clarifying some doubts over the roadside assistance service. Keep up the great work
D.
A great experience in terms of customer service at drop off at THL in Christchurch. While adhering to the THL app for freedom camping we nevertheless got an infringement ticket of 200 NZD at one place in Canterbury. After some short checks of our supporting documents, THL offered straight away to pay the fine and to update the app accordingly. Great customer service, and the reason why I already booked 3 times with Maui/thl.
A.
It was as advertised. Had enough linen and blankets. Kitchen stuff was adequate. Our one came with everything we needed and some stuff we didn’t end up using. Toilet and shower cubicle on Venturer 2 berth was very tight for anyone tall or large. The cushions for the bed were quite thin - made for a very firm bed. I’m 165 tall and I only just fit in the bed lying flat. Partner is 6”2 and had to go sideways. It drove well enough and we are very happy with our experience.
K.
Rented Maui Camper van for 20 days in November 2019 and put on close to 4000 kms touring the coastal roads of the New Zealand South Island. Appropriately sized for two people although van had capacity for sleeping 3. Camper van came well equipped and included an electric space heater that was very handy on chilly evenings. While we did not use the shower, the availability of the toilet greatly augmented our travels and overnight stays at Top 10 Campgrounds. The weather did not offer opportunity to utilize the BBQ/external table, however, it was nice to know it was there if we needed it. Did not use the bike racks that came with van.
L.
Maui, Britz, Mighty, Kea, the THL company. I’ve been renting and relocating lots of campers from this company for years in Australia and NZ. Very professional, very reasonable and not once have I had a problem.
Don’t bother looking at any other company!
Apollo is appalling Juicy is basic and expensive and wicked... well the worst.
When picking up your camper I would thoroughly inspect it inside out for any problems.
1. Check the fridge!! - see if the latch is functional and check for any bad smells. It can ruin your trip if the van is smelling like decaying meat.
2. Check that the water pump is working
3. Inspect the toilet, shower room for cleanliness.
4. Check the gas hub is in working order
5. Everything else, window damage, external damage, listen to the engine etc...
I usually take photos then a video just to cover my back.
The thing that differentiates Maui to other companies is that you don’t feel mugged off when picking up and dropping off the vehicle.
My only complaint is that the Christchurch branch is very slow at processing, I had to wait for 2hrs. Other than that it’s a spacious clean place with free coffee and tea :)
T.
Great overall experience. It’s our second time using Britz/Maui. Easy booking via chat this time as there were 4 groups of us originally. Easy pick up and drop off. The van was a little bit run down inside this time; Hole in the sliding door and wall paint coming off in a few places, fridge door handle was broken and USB port up front didn’t work. (Mentioned at drop off). However we throughly enjoyed our 4 day trip and would book again 😍
J.
We picked up and dropped off at the Christchurch depot. Campervan allocated was clean and tidy. We were off on our adventures in no time. The staff were super friendly and helpful with explaining how things worked in the camper. We even tested the heater to make sure it was working properly. We had a great 4 days in the campervan and look forward to doing something similar in the North Island sometime soon!
F.
I had a really good campervan experience. Ultima was the Van. Lots of power and grunt. Very bouncy suspension. Slept well and loved all the windows so you can really enjoy the environment.
Couldn't use the microwave - totally didn't make any sense.
Hot water heater didn't give hot water in the sink. Unlike my car there is no fuel consumption indications like you have in a car. So you have no idea on consumption per km or projected distance with remaining tank.
Get the Express return so you don't have to worry about the gas bottle, fuel and waste and road tax. I did 2,267km down to Milford Sound.
Don't buy Diesel in Queenstown you are going to pay 20c more per litre. Te Anau Diesel is CHEAP so is lake Hawera.
Also the Sat Nav frustrated me like nothing on earth and I gave up. I have used so many over the years and you need a masters degree. ALSO... You are not allowed to take the vehicle on the CROWN RANGE - but guess what - the Sat Nav only knows how to direct you to Queenstown over the crown range!!!
Maui DO provide FREE shuttle between Christchurch Intl Terminal and their Office. Btu they don't advertise it anywhere and it is virtually impossible to get this information easier. Bad Maui - NOT good enough.
E.
My husband and I and our two children had the most amazing holiday around the South Island, and a camper van was definitely the way to do it ! The camper was spacious and worked well in terms of layout for the four of us. My only comment would be we never got any proper hand over and no once showed us anything in terms of how the camper worked when we picked it up in Christchurch. We did watch the introduction video, but this was pretty brief. We did encounter a few problems in the first few days, which could have been avoided if we had of been given an introduction to the camper and how it all worked. But otherwise, very very good.
C.
We really enjoyed our experience hiring the Maui 3 Berth and it was the perfect way to travel the NZ south island with our 5 yo daughter. The only issue we faced was that when we picked up the vehicle there were no snow chains to hire leaving us with no chains in the NZ winter or paying $400 to buy them only to have to leave them behind when we returned to Aus. As these are such an essential item you would hope that each vehicle was allocated a set without the possibility of running out. We would definitely hire through this company again however, we would not travel without snow chains again as we did have to forgo some areas for fear of getting into trouble.
G.
First time renting a campervan for 10 days. Upon pickup, a thorough explanation of vehicle was advised including a video on the type of vehicle (2+1 berth). Did 1600 ks around northern part of South Island including Golden Bay. Internal battery OK but need to hook up for microwave and powerpoints. However, had gas BBQ and hob with kettle for food and drink on the run.
Only drawback was that we had to make bed every night. Next hire will have seperate sleeping area i.e. 4 Berth.
B.
Wow, what a van! Our Mercedes camper was awesome, well appointed, clean and tidy when collected. Handover instruction wasn't great in these days of Health and Safety, but download the app and watch the videos. A face to face is often better for older customers like us. A very comfortable 10 days/1500kms in a camper that performed and went well; nothing fell off or broke. We hired a camper last year from a different brand/company, the Maui was much better equipped with the awning being operable (useful when wet!) and wine glasses included! The only complaint was that the windscreen washers were on holiday too! Thank you Maui, it was a great holiday in the beautiful South Island.
G.
Excellent experience picking up and dropping off our camper van. Great staff, smooth process and clear guidance on all the dos and donts of living in a camper van for two weeks. Thank you to the Maui team - we got to see some amazing places in Te Waipounamu. Glyn Walters
Y.
Highly recommended. We hired the Maui Cascade for 13 days + full cover and were not disappointed. The destination that is the South Island is just gorgeous and to do it in such a comfortable ride makes it all the better. The camper is a Mercedes Sprinter offering incredible comfort both in cabin and driving, great fuel economy, and a very surprising tight turning angle.. It had all that was needed and kept warm this winter. We experienced an unavoidable breakdown 1/4 into the trip and THL ensured to cover our overnight arrangement while a replacement was sorted. I must admit that THL's customer service exceeded my expectation and I would rebook in a heartbeat.
M.
Always love waking up in the wild.It was the third time to choose Maui.Had an excellent holiday in South Island autumn. Can't wait for next trip.
J.
This was our 3rd rental over several years the previous 2 with Kea (now absorbed as part of the THL Group I believe).
While the process of booking and going through the Campervan was pretty straight forward for us (the videos were a great idea) it would be fair to say that we were less than thrilled over the campervan itself! Looking around the van there were signs of scrapes and dings all round and when you are paying 'top dollar' for Maui you should be able to expect better.
Although the van was only 2 years old and had travelled around 64,000k's it hadn't been as well looked after as those we had previously hired.
As I was leaving the hire company I noticed that the brake pedal had heaps of excessive freeboard (and at times on the journey would almost reach the floor) and there was brake squeal coming from one wheel - not a good sign that the van had been thoroughly checked over. In hindsight, for safety reasons, I should have returned the van then and there to get either repaired or swapped and I advise others to do so especially if they aren't used to driving larger heavier vehicles.
However, that said, we covered over 2,600 k's in the van with trouble free motoring. The Merc. Cab & Chassis units are quite peppy & the auto is good and smooth and manually downshifts and holds on the hills.
Inside, the cleaning was pretty average with dirt & wrappers having been left around the upstairs bed, the sink drain was almost blocked and the shower door was falling apart - again, not the sort of thing I would expect when paying a premium for a van.
Overall comment, we went to Maui as we'd had such a great run with Kea and have been disappointed so next time we will look further afield.
T.
We rented a motorhome with Maui Rental for 2 weeks. The staff were helpful despite the place being busy most of the time. It was our first time travelling around in a motorhome in New Zealand, and the self-contained vehicle was such a convenience - albeit space in the bathroom was a wee bit tight - particularly when parking in non-powered sites with little to no facilities and during inclement weather at night. Everything was in order and worked well as expected. Hope to visit NZ again for another fun-filled motorhome experience with Maui Rental!
J.
Great trip, great van and even better service, everyone we dealt with at the branch were fantastic.
Definitely download the THL road trip app so you can learn how the van works before you pick it up.
I highly recommend getting the inclusive package for the $0 excess and the table chairs heater etc.
Also recommend the Express Return Package for a much easier drop off.
Wish i could give 6 stars it was that good!
B.
Certified self contained camper van is the best way to see our neck of the woods. We had a great experience, can't fault it. The campervan was more than spacious for the two of us ( can even squeeze two more if you're a group of four and will still have enough room to move around). Will definitely do it again.
a.
Motor home was comfortable and good on fuel consumption. Heating excellent with diesel or electric heater.
Getting attention from staff at pick up counters was slow, especially as one had no clients.
Radio in the rear of van did not work. Called helpline, who promised to call us back but never did.
We were disappointed that the offer of a free night at any top10 was not met. Staff gave three different explanations on how this offer worked. The offer was ambiguous and one staff member acknowledged it needs to be re written. It is worth about $44 (one free night) to non top 10 members, but only $10 to existing Top10 members like us ( 2 x $40 less the $70 cost). THL should have refunded us the cost of the one night we paid at a top 10 campsite.
R.
Ruthless 3pm customer collection deadline lacks options. Customer service agent Ruth is amazing! Excellent product range. Would use again even if stove rattled a bit.
J.
We had such a great weekend away from Christchurch to Tekapo. Apart from the horrible smell coming from the toilet!!! Hahaha! At times waves of poo, urine, rotten seafood... Smell, where all 6 of us gagged all the way to Tekapo and all the way home. Didn't use the toilet, because of some brown u know liquid on the ground of it....
But everything else was awesome!! Love every minute of our first experience of driving a camper van with my whole family!
Thank you for providing sheets, towels, pillows and duvet and a fully equipped kitchen saves the day!!!
Sleeping arrangements are easy for 2 adults and 4 kids.... ❤️ As long as nose covered, it is an awesome experience 😆
N.
Staff were great and very helpful. They all went out of their way making sure my family had a detailed show through of the motorhome, and advised us on some great places to visit.
Rebecca and Carolina were excellent at their job and made us all comfortable and well-informed prior to starting off on our journey. Would happily return and hire from them again.

Great trip in a really good camper. Service at the office was very good and the camper was well set up. Could have been a bit cleaner (crumbs under cushions etc) but mostly good. The following things would make travel more comfy:
Spray bottle of surface cleaner, bowl for mixing foods, small snack bowls, screw connection for fresh water hose, 2 more tea towels and at least one more toilet sachet and detergent sachet, long handled inside broom.

We had a great experience with the motorhome. It’s easy to use and comfortable inside. Portable heater was provided so we stayed nice and warm at night. Some drawer locks were a bit loose so kept opening on the trip but otherwise a great experience. Customer service could use a bit of a lift. We weren’t picked up by the shuttle at the Christchurch airport so had to pay extra to get a large taxi (with luggage) to Maui pickup base, which we weren’t told about. Also calls to the 0800 number weren’t answered quick enough. There’s no real support available quite when you need it.

Travelling the South Island in a campervan was an awesome experience, so convenient with all the comforts, drop-off was fast and easy. On collection the van passed all its pre checks, however we questioned the depth of tread on one of the back tyres. The mechanic appeared very disgruntled to check the tyres again, the result was they had to change the tyre as it was not legal. Ensure you do your checks properly and be insistent if you think something does not meet standards.

Much better this time as last time there was no pick up or drop off at airport n service was better as there were more staff. Camper as usual great to drive, fantastic heater which we needed in some bad frosts,
Only “ gripe “ was that they forgot to fill up drink water tank( only one kettle to make cuppa) n toilet had no water/ cleaner in . Both would be ok if they informed us . For the rest we really enjoy the 6 birth even tho it’s for 2 ppl but with age comes love of comfort n they sure are comfortable.
Will be back again .

My wife and I Picked up a Maui Beach Motor Home in Christchurch and traveled around the upper South Island for 2 weeks. The Motor Home presentation when we uplifted it was outstanding, staff were very helpful. In retrospect the vehicle size was a little bit of an over kill for two people, we could have done with the next size down. We had a great time and there were no vehicle issues. We would highly recommend other New Zealanders try this form of holiday to see our country. We will be doing this again in the not too distant future.

I hired a Maui Discovery Motorhome from your Christchurch depot on Orchard Road on the 4th May 2021.
At time of delivery we received the vehicle briefing and all appeared to be OK.
With that my wife and I departed for a motorhome experience with return on the 18th May 2021.
We stayed in Christchurch the first night and notice the house battery had a low voltage so I connected the vehicle to a power supply to charge it.
The next morning I noticed that the voltage was still low but higher than the previous day, so I contacted your help line who advised me to take the vehicle back to your depot in Christchurch.
At your depot the customer services rep had the battery checked by your service department and I was assured there was no problem with the house battery, so we departed Christchurch travelling to the West Coast.
On departure from Christchurch I emphasised to the customer services rep that I will be very disappointed if this battery problem persists.
On the night of the 5th May we freedom camped at Lake Brunner, as the night progressed I noticed the fridge had stopped so I checked it to make sure all was well.
At this point the low voltage had tripped the power supply so I switched the main switch off and on and the power was restored, but during the night the fridge began to continue stopping so once again I switched the power off and the all appeared to be OK except the voltage on the house battery was at 10v
I made contact with your help line who advised I should take the vehicle to your recommended service agent at Hokitika.
This deviation to Hokitika required us to reschedule our planned itinerary as Hokitika was not included.
The service agent did a discharge test on the house battery and identified it was at the end of its life and replaced it, from that time until I returned the vehicle we had no further trouble with the power supply from the house battery and freedom camped without any issues.
Other issues include,
* We had problems with the shower water not draining away and I identified that the drain was blocked with long black hair, so I cleared it and had no more problems.
* We also had an issue with the sink drain not draining away, so I used hot water and it cleared which would indicate it was probably full of fat.
These drainage issues are a indication that no checks were may prior to me picking up the vehicle.
* Fresh water and grey water tank level indicators didn’t work, but had a sticker stating that they needed to be drained or refilled every one to two days, I find this totally unacceptable.
* On the fridge cabinet a screw with a sharp end was sticking out which could have pierced our skin. This should have been noticed when the screw was installed or during the vehicle safety inspection
* The front right hand gas ring failed to work, another vehicle check missed by your personnel.
* The left rear storage locker where the power cable is stored was difficult to open as the lock mechanism is not operable.
* The insect screen on the exit door retaining clip is broken so when you shut the outside door the insect screen is released
* The GPS had no audio function and I found it not user friendly, not sure if the cable disconnected from the sat dome on the roof was the cause of the problems. For the record I am a computer literate person and don’t have problems with GPS nav systems.
As we worked with all the issues, I have to say we had an enjoyable motorhome experience but must conclude by saying I expected premium service from a premium vehicle, but found this was not the case,
The support we received from the 24hr Helpline was brilliant with advise and recommendations that related to the house battery problems.
I will not be able to recommend your company to any of my friends
J.
Great camper and service. Download the app, it’s worth it, we used it all the time. Our 3 boys slept in the top canopy and we slept on the bed in the back. The bedding was warm and cozy. We would run the fan heater when plugged in to keep us warm as the diesel heater when not plugged in. We were in some pretty cold temps but didn’t always need the heater all night, so woke just turn it off before we went to sleep and turn it on very early when we first woke up. We got 4 nights with no power and could’ve probably got a 5th, easy to use and read all the gauges.
Suggestions:
1. A larger frying pan, for a 6 berth camper the size of the frying pan did not cater to the amount of people when cooking.
2. More dish liquid sachets, cloths and blue toilet chemical according to your length of hire, it seems silly to make people go purchase these items that only come in bigger bottles surplus to requirements, also not very sustainable.
Also not sure if we were doing something wrong but while driving it was cold for the passengers in the back, very drafty and no heat for them.
Overall absolutely fantastic, one of the best, bonding and memory making holidays ever! Staff were brilliant and the whole organizing, booking, checking in and out etc a breeze. Thank you 😀
V.
Camper was good to drive & the bed that lowered from the ceiling was great. Good bedding and kitchen equipment. Staff at depot for pick up and drop off very good. Extra tea towel, spray cleaner, more detergent & salt & pepper would be good as standard provision as impossible to buy in small quantity for 10 day trip. The noise of the cabinetry, cupboards & stove rattling nearly drove us CRAZY!!!. (not so much the things in the drawers etc - stuffed towels etc in there to quieten) Believe this could easily be fixed with something like foam strip to have a little tension/stop rattles. we had to jam bits of paper jammed in every cupboard & drawer every time we drove anywhere. Interesting to find out that when you sell campers you take them for a test drive and "get them quiet" Please make the same effort for those hiring a camper as we dont have the privilege of a test drive and finding another camper option. For this reason probably won't hire again, hate to imagine what it would have been like on Northland roads !! We have not had this problem with previous 2 hires w other companies.
G.
Wonderful customer service! Thank you so much for all your help. The campervan was in excellent condition. The video tutorials in the app are SUPER helpful, and the 0800 24/7 service is fantastic. We loved our trip from Chch to Dunedin, to Catlins, to Bluff, to Lake Tekapo and back to Chch. Thank you for the extra duvet, much appreciated!! We'll be back, surely!!
D.
Awesome service, great vans. Few wear and tear issues quickly and easily resolved. Fantastic customer service team, and front of house. Quick and smooth pickup and drop off. Put other rental companies long delays to shame. Well done guys 5 star service! We’ll be back next year.

There's good bits and bad bits about the Maui sprinter campervan that we rented.
The good bits:
- Booking process is really seamless, staff informative about the general usage of the van, except for some bits detailed below.
- The van drives really REALLY well and is fuel efficient (for such a van that is). Pleasure to drive.
- Diesel heater is also quite fuel efficient. Staff should inform of the consumption, as we were reluctant to use it since nobody gave us an idea of how much diesel it would use, but it seldom uses any.
- Navigation a bit clunky at first but usable after getting the hang of it. Includes more spots than one would think of but is a bit harsh on recalculating routes.
The bad bits:
- By far the worst part of the van was the beds. They're absolutely inhumane; Rough, hard and uneven, they seep the cold from below, made for some really awful nights. We had to buy an insulated inflatable foam piece to actually make it somewhat decent.
- Insulation is very lackluster in this model at least, and the diesel heater will only take you so far when there's nothing to keep the heat in.
- Couch pieces that you have to move to build the bed were quite dirty when received, and so were the spaces below that. Could see the accumulation of dirt and scraps from previous usages.
All in all it was a good experience tainted with some rough bits that did not completely take away from the van life experience. Using a big campervan instead of our own smaller one had some positive and negative learnings that will guide our next camper experiences. My recommendation for anyone willing to give these a go is that they're worth it but really careful with the bed if you're a light sleeper or tend to seek some minimum level of comfort, because the beds do not provide it.
P.
Picking up our camper was trouble free and we were on our way quickly. Everything went well, the van was easy to drive and had all we needed for our camping trip. No problems with accessing the (main) places we ventured to although not all towns and cities have larger car parks so you need to be mindful of going into city centres etc.
The returns process was also quick and the shuttle to the airport was there very quickly.
We’d definitely do it again. Great experience seeing more of our beautiful country. Recommend it for sure.
C.
We used the 6 berth Britz campervan for 2 weeks. It was great to have a double bed to ourselves each to give ourselves space with a seated area with a table to sit and have meals. There was plenty of bedding for us given that it was a 6 berth and only 2 of us using the campervan. The mattresses were comfortable. We were pleased with most aspects of the campervan. There was plenty of storage for us. It was easy to use apart from obtaining hot water which we were unable to obtain despite ringing the company and going through the step by step process with them. Thank you for giving us compensation for being unable to work the hot water. We had great service/response from the company when our USB port in the front of the campervan didn't work. We were directed to the closest auto electrician who was able to assess the USB port immediately. It was unable to be fixed, however the company paid for a cigarette lighter USB port which solved our problem.
I wish that we had known about the free shuttle available for pick up from the airport. Can this be mentioned more please? We were shown the various aspects of our campervan by a young lady in her mid to late 20s with a Spanish like accent. I feel as though she lacked enthusiasm during our engagement with her. I felt as though she mustn't really like completing this job. I wish that obtaining the hot water had been demonstrated for I don't remember it being demonstrated.
Overall I was satisfied with the campervan and the service provided to me. I will recommend this company and their campervans to other people who show interest. The cost of renting is good value for money with more inclusions provided to me and my friend compared to another company that we used last year.

It was our first time travelling around in a campervan, it was a brilliant experience and we really enjoyed it. We traveled with another 3 families ( We made sure not to cause any hassle to the other road users 😄) . The Ultima was truly a well equipped camper. Only small negative comment is about the GPS navigation system installed in our camper as it does not seem to connect even when we have standard signal available.
S.
Good trip!...Good vehicle ......hand over intro was too rushed and brief .....we had to come back for a water hose , had been left out of the gear locker! ...no compensation or adjustment for that.....other wise ti was a no fuss no bother agreement....the road user mile charges also crept up on us as we did 3,500 ks!
P.
Brilliant opportunity to experience camper vanning in our stunning Central Otago. Camper was very well appointed with everything we needed. Very easy to drive with only one slight issue with the sliding door not closing properly which I’m sure upset a few fellow campers late at night! I passed this on when returning the van so all good. Would not hesitate to repeat. Fantastic family fun during challenging times. The special deals were certainly appreciated by a lot of fellow kiwi’s. Perhaps a “local price” could be the norm?
R.
We had great trip around the bottom of the South Island in our Maui Mercedes Camper. The vehicle was really comfortable and easy to drive, so much so that my wife and I shared the driving duties. The van was well equipped and everything worked as it should. The pick-up and drop off was a seamless transition and the staff were very professional. Many thanks for the experience.
R.
My wife and I hired a 4 berth camper for 4 weeks to travel the South Island from Christchurch. The vehicle went well, had one flat tyre and the company gave us good advice and service although the tyre repair man was not impressed when having to retrieve the spare tyre from under the camper. Our particular camper which was a 2018 model had been involved in an accident and was roughly repaired on the two rear corners however it held together for the duration of the trip although a number of people had made comments on the repair job. We had hired bikes and required a bike rack which cost us $50 - seemed a bit strange as a lot of campers had bike racks permanently in place with no bikes!
Overall camper travelled well and our dealings with the company and staff was good.
E.
We had a wonderful campervan holiday in the South Island. Weather couldn't have been better.
A few things:
1.Very pleased that we upgraded and had a diesel heater
2. The van was fine - Venturer 2 berth but if we hired again we would not hire this van. Having to make up the bed every night was a pain, the passage between the galley and shower/toilet was too narrow so if someone was cooking nobody else could pass.
3. Although I had checked before we left the only information I could find regarding charging phones etc indicated that we would need to be plugged into power to charge but in fact the van had USB ports and we could charge anytime, therefor the power bank I purchased specially was not needed.
4. A bit more of a run through prior to departure would have been nice as it took us a few days to find a few things. The info on the iPad was fine and the info sheets provided were good but they should be used as a reminder only. An actual run through would have been nice. eg we didn't discover the teatowel and detergent for a couple of days (we purchased our own). The first time we used the stove it took us a few minutes to work out that we need to turn the fan hood switch on. Little things but frustrating at the time.
5 It was wonderful to have the extra bedding but when you have limited storage space one duvet would have been sufficient, especially as we had a change of sheets.
The above comments are not meant as criticism, but hopefully helpful suggestions.
C.
The camper we hired in Christchurch was very clean and tidy. Extremely well equipped and was faultless. The Maui instructions were great and clear. The staff extremely helpful but overworked as it took 2 hrs to get our van when we started which is why I didn't give them a 5 . Return at the end was efficient and excellent. A great experience especially at the special deal THL offered. I hope the tourism recipients in NZ appreciate what THL has done to help the sector with this offer
R.
We had great service and the camper went well and had everything we needed. Will certainly use your service again.
M.
Great service, easy check in and return, while waiting we wish we had been shown the coffee. The van was well set up however dishes need to be microwaveable, power points more accessible and cost hooks in the shower cubicle to hand wet clothing during inclement weather.
m.
As our first time to rent a motor home, Maui provided a good video to help you know how every thing worked. Our wait to pick up the motor home, was a bit long, but the staff then took time, to make sure they showed you how everything worked. We really enjoyed our journey in the camper and only wished we could have rented it longer. Would definitely urge people to take advantage of this medium to see their own country. A great deal from a good company.
P.
Only giving it 4 stars because half way through the trip our Camper had a blown fuse which rendered our 240 V appliances useless. Still the campervan was comfortable for the 2 nights without powered sights. Had a grand trip from Christchurch to milford sound ending at Queenstown. Would 5/5 recommend it to everyone. Already planning my next trip next year.
C.
We are new to camper van travel. Checkin process was easy and staff were most helpful with our request for a last minute upgrade.
Camper van was clean & tidy and only 40,000km on the clock!
Staff were great with handover and explained everything fully.
THL app was great and appreciated the discount at Top 10 Holiday Parks.
Van was easy to drive - note: main driver was used to driving trucks but second driver was not and still found driving reasonably stress free.
All up it was an enjoyable two weeks.
Thanks Maui

I can't rate our recent Maui camper van trip more highly. Our vehicle was clean and very well equipped with everything we needed for our week long holiday in the South Island.
The pick up and drop off was a little chaotic but that was probably more due to Level 2 distancing protocol than anything else! Allow at least an hour for collection/drop off.
Highly recommend and look forward to booking another trip soon!
B.
We LOVED our week away in the 2 Berth Ventura. Lots of room an a very effective heater which was needed as we traveled in MAY. There was more than enough linen supplied and the vehicle was in top condition. We are already planning our next getaway.
Our only niggle was that currently Maui are not running there complimenty shuttle to and from the airport. This was disapointing as there were plently of staff in the office avaliable to support this service.
A.
We had a lovely time in our campervan! It was nice and warm and well set out. We will certainly look to re book next year! The THL app was great for help with the van and locations of campsites (we used mainly DOC sites)

I cannot recommend this company highly enough.
We hired a van for one week in October 2020. Everything about the hire process and the van itself was excellent.
Unfortunately during the trip my husband died from a sudden medical event. The staff at Maui were exceptional in their care of us. We were treated with great compassion and they did everything possible to help me during this terrible time. This is a company that doesn't just care about money. They really care about their customers and their wellbeing.
Thank you so much for all your help.

This was our first experience of using a mobile home and we loved it. New Zealand has very little traffic (although lots of winding roads!) and our Cascade Elite was superb for the two of us.
It was very comfortable and easy to drive. Internally it is very well thought out and the electric drop down bed was a boon as you don't have to make up your bed every night. The kitchen works really well and it was very useful having an 'en suite' bathroom although most of the time we used the campsite facilities.
We would thoroughly recommend using Maui who were very professional in all our dealings with them.
L.
We had a 6 berth that was easy to drive, dual wheels on the back made it nice and stable both on road and walking around inside.Well appointed overall.
Staff were friendly and great to deal with.
Make sure you have a good look around on pick-up, don't leave the tray in the microwave, it will fall out and don't bother paying for a bike rack, in 3 weeks I never saw a Maui without one.
A.
I hired a Maui campervan in January and was extremely happy with the service provided and the camper was way better than I expected! I was served by Andrew and found him to be very knowledgable and friendly. Everything was explained really well, we didn't even need to use the manual! The whole process from booking to collection to drop off was very straight forward. I 100% recommend the RV Supercentre!
S.
This was our first trip in a camper van, we hired a Maui Ultima + for a 8 day trip.
The van was very clean and tidy on pick up and was equipped with all equipment which we may have needed.
Whilst travelling we learnt the Maui wave from other Maui camper van drivers.
The book in and return service was quick and efficient, we will certainty be re booking in the near future.
B.
We're on the road for over 2 weeks and Maui looked after as very well no hassles any problems were easily solved excellent service.
F.
Enjoyed our 3 nights in a 6 berth Maui (had booked a 6 berth Britz)
We would not, however rebook through you guys again due to a few factors.
We do appreciate the fact it was cheap to get the vans out on the road - however once we had checked in at reception (lovely efficient staff member) things went down hill. Wait time for vehicle, cleanliness or lack of for the van, lack of verbal instruction.
Linen, crockery, pots, pans, etc were clean the rest was not!! The exterior of the van was filthy. So bad that once we were back home to pack it - we had to clean the back window (caked in mud)
The bathroom area also sub standard... Long black hair in the bucket and on the laminate floor.
Marketing wise I would think that return business from locals would be important as current conditions will be with us for some time yet.
Please please employ enough staff to present your vehicles to a top notch standard. Then and only then would we reconsider taking one again.
D.
We had a great experience with our Maui camper van the front desk service on pick up was swift and courteous. The van was clean and in great condition however there were a couple of issues we found on the road which we flagged up on return. A couple of the locks were not secure while driving but not major issue. We bought the express return package which was excellent in terms of not having to queue to get away and worrying about catching our flight. The whole operation is slick and customer focused
R.
This was a fantastic holiday at an awesome discounted rate. Something that should be considered for NZ citizens frequently. It was an awesome experience driving around seeing how beautiful NZ is. Pick up was a little slow and we waited around an hour. To get the vehicle so pushed us behind in our travel time. All in all I totally recommend hiring one of these things.
D.
Unfortunately very few of our instructions at the time of booking were carried out, we were unhappy that the shower did not drain, the toilet leaked into the shower, the seats did not swivel, the electric jug was dangerous and it was a very old model.
The van drove well, handled well and was economical.
The company did give us a credit on the diesel tax for all the faults.
S.
We had a convoy of 4 vans in our group booking. It took over 3 hours to get us all through the handover at Christchurch. Each van had not been completed in readiness with issues like fuel and gas tanks not filled, fuel tax registration had expired on one van, one bed base was missing, and a pump for the water tank kept running, due to an airlock and low level of water in the tank. There was a water leak in one of the vans causing the bedding to become soaked, various drawers sprung open during travel, even though they were locked in place. The expected noise of rattling cupboards was so intense it was difficult to hear one another converse during driving. One van had a faulty battery.
Now for the positives, the staff at Christchurch were very helpful regarding the various concerns with our vans. The return handover was very quick, and we all had emails from Maui during our holiday ensuring we were happy, and providing supportive telephone numbers. The Maui 6 berth beach vans were easy to drive, economical, the internal layout and general finish and decor was clean and smart.
Our group of 8 would definitely consider hiring these vans again, as we had a really good holiday touring New Zealand.
K.
We had 10 nights away in our mid sized camper, absolutely had a ball.
In total we traveled 2450ish k's from the top to the bottom of the south island.
The camper itself was well equipped, everything was thought of, with well thought out storage spaces.
The cassette loo was easy to use & really easy to empty. A strong constitution is needed when emptying, or should I say a clear well prepared head is required, but it was absolutely no problem once you set your mind to it.
The shower was remarkably powerful, but to be fair incredibly cramped.
Free camping was easy and we made great use of the camper mate app on the entertainment screen. The Camper mate app was excellent.
Lastly I will say the bed was firm. Not what we are used to, but we slept really well. It has prompted us to reconsider our own bed at home.
Highly recommended holiday that everyone should experience at least once. Go on have a go...
R.
Friendly staff, especially upon returning our campervan. There were a few little maintenance items that should have been fixed before we took the camper, plus it hadn't been washed on the outside. All others around it looked clean but ours wasn't. While it doesn't affect the performance of the camper it's not professional. Overall we enjoyed our experience and would consider using THL again to rent a campervan
S.
Great deal. Great service. Awesome family holiday touring the West Coast and top South Island. Recommend Glow Worm Dell at Hokitika as must see wee gem. Interesting to see in daylight after first seeing in the dark of night. We had a Maui 6 berth camper for 8 days. Weather was stunning. South Island you are amazing :)
s.
Very poor collection service in Christchurch. We arrived several hours early after calling ahead & were still left waiting for 3 hours whilst our vehicle was prepared. Although they provided a shuttle to the supermarket this wasn't the best idea as we still had not been in the van to look at what was already in there in terms of cooking facilities & cleaning utensils.
The handover was so quick you could have thought it didn't happen. Fortunately we are familiar with motorhomes but more time explaining what was in the van would have been appreciated..feeling so rushed was not a good start to our break.
The vehicle was great with excellent drop off in Auckland.
R.
Got down on one of the super specials otherwise may never have done it. Arrived at 11am expecting to be collected (“Pick up” on the check in doesn’t mean pick you up at the airport) but after a half hour waiting and no reply to phone calls, decided to make our own way to the depot. Finally got our RV just before 5pm (5 hour wait) so really stuffed up our itinerary. No at the team members fault - they were really good. But they are renting out vehicles the same day they come in so with full bookings, you might have to wait a loooong time until yours comes in, gets cleaned up and made ready.
RV had everything, lots of blankets, sheets, pillows etc. Clean too. Be prepared to wedge all drawers, they all fly open even when locked.
Other than first days stuff up, it was a great deal and really enjoyed our time. Recommend using Rankers App
O.
I had a great experience with the motorhome. We picked it In Auckland and drove all the way down.
A few bumps on the collection and we ended up with a brand new motorhome after the one we got had issues and we went on our way only to find out that there were no instruction inside as it was brand new and we didn't get any training but we found other motorhomes on the road and figure it out quickly.
S.
Initially after the 2 hour wait to pick up our camper, we were walked around the vehicle to check for scratches / dents, and then looked at as if we'd hired a camper before and were experts which is 100% not the case. Any questions that were asked seemed like an inconvenience, and we weren't given an in depth answer, things weren't explained in an easy to understand way and we weren't even shown the interior of the van at all and were given a little how to booklet and then left. We weren't happy with the experience with the introduction of the van or the wait if that quick 5 minute walk around was all that was happening. The van, trip & comforts itself were great with us taking a few days to work around and figure things out by the end of the trip it was a breeze. Due to COVID, our flights home were cancelled and rescheduled, which meant we had to drop our camper off a day early. Due to this circumstance, I thought we would get a refund for the unused day seeing it was out of our control, but we received nothing. Again when we dropped the van off, it was poorly communicated what needed to happen, we weren't told there wasn't a shuttle service to the airport & ideally the branch should open at 7am to allow people to make it to the airport in time and allow for early flights. Overall happy with the quality of the vehicle itself and how easy it was to manoeuvre, but unfortunately the service we received was poor and put a negative feel on the trip.
J.
We had a great experience. The van was clean, easy to keep organized, modern, very comfortable, well accommodated, surprisingly spacious and easy to drive, even on New Zealand’s more windy roads. It would have been great to have been able to open the back windows on warmer nights, but there 1) wasn’t a way to do so for most of the van windows and 2) there were no screens to protect us from bugs so we relied on just the top vent. Fortunately, we had more cool nights than hot ones. The only other piece of feedback is that the shelving unit above the sink is IKEA quality. While it’s nice to have special organization units for the glassware, the shelf inexplicably gave out on our second day of driving so we had to tape it back together (I fortunately brought gorilla tape). We had the 24/7 roadside assistance package so a local shop in Fox Glacier area was able to fix it, despite it not being your typical mechanic job. Otherwise, our Maui van was a wonderful home away from home for 10 days - we already miss it!
j.
Check in took longer than we thought. Expect 2hrs to do so. Good introduction by ? Manu to how van worked. Very helpful person as its important to be confident before take off. Campervan clean and neat and very well stocked with pans, jugs, cleaning gear etc. No mechanical problems. Happy how staff were helpful at all times. Fun experience.
J.
First time hiring a camper, van was great but very cold. Was told on pick up not to leave diesel heater running and there was only a small electric fan heater which again you couldn't leave on all night.
L.
Loved our Maui 6 berth. It had everything we needed for our winter South Island roadie. The camper was cosy & warm & surprising comfortable. On the road during the day the camper drove well & safely on our NZ roads & had enough power. Check in & drop off at the depo was super easy & stress free. Would recommend to anyone wanting a campervan trip
V.
We loved our 12 day rental with Maui. We had taken a 4 berth Cascade with the elite option. The van itself was close to brand new and the furnishings provided were excellent. The service provided both at pick up in Christchurch and drop off in Queenstown was courteous and efficient.
All in all, we had a great road trip around the south island, thanks to Maui. I would do this again in a heartbeat :)
J.
Picked up a campervan here and ended up having an array of issues, from it not having fresh water on the first night, to light switches not working and finally a significant leak in the back corner over the bed. However, the staff were helpful and I'm still giving 3 stars because they offered a replacement van and were then willing to refund our unused days.
W.
No fuss pick up and return. Camper had everthing to make camping a fun and comfortable experience. Great way to travel, lots of free and pay camper van sites to stay. Greatest holiday ever travelling the south Island.
D.
Generally a good experience. The van drove and worked fine. Our only issue would be the rushed orientation to the van. No explanation of how to use the quirky ( to us at least) navigation system. We didn’t find the USB charging points until several days into the trip. We’ve never used a campervan before so even some hints as to how to store things efficiently and lay out the cushions to make the bed would have been helpful. Also, after a few days of minimal water usage we thought we should empty the grey water and there was a huge volume of waste. I’m sure it wasn’t emptied completely before we started our trip.
On the positive side, all the staff at the centre were very friendly. Just give us more time at the beginning!

we were travelling from Christchurch to Queenstown and back for 3 weeks. Had an airbag issue with the van which the folks at the Queenstown bracnh we very helpful in getting us to someone who could get it fixed. Vehicle was almost new so now issue there. All in all a good experience, will likely rent again from them

Overall very nice experience, handover was professional and in a timely manner. Drop off (we took the express drop off package) was even easier. The camper was in a good condition apart from the non functional gauges for water and waste. We had a broken seal for the water on the way and got great support from the company (was fixed by a service provider en route within 10min) Only thing I would like to mention is that it was not very clean but that took us only about 30min to change. Definitely will go with this company again when we come back

I am pleased with my choice of rental and its general performance. It was my first time driving a camper van. There was almost two hour wait at the rental agency before we can get on the road the first day, which wasn't expected and was never explained why. The weather got quite bad toward the end of the afternoon and I wasn't too thrilled about that. You need to do your own research where to go in advance otherwise you don't hear much at the Rental agency. The GPS worked all the way but not perfectly up to date for certain locations (Maui rental return location etc.!) or road-closure, so it was helpful to stop time to time at the Tourist Information to get help.

These guys have been run off their feet with the Kiwi demand for campervans post-covid. So I have some sympathy for them. But our camper wasn't ready and that was a dampener since we had flown into Chch early to pick it up (however, we were refunded a day which we appreciated and also were given a courtesy car to use for the supermarket while we waited). The camper was immaculately clean and we absolutely loved our trip. Drop-off was also an anti-climax - no-one at the depot was interested in saying "hi, how was your trip, did you have a great time?" Regardless, I would highly recommend to anyone to hire a Maui camper for a roadie as we loved it :)

All members of staff are very friendly, professional and have a complete understanding of everything involving Motorhome rental.
When shown round my rental, it was exactly as I had chosen on line.
Everything about the Motorhome was demonstrated to me, everything was in order.
The vehicle was in excellent service order and drove beautifully with excellent economy.
My touring holiday was excellent, I would use Maui again.

We found the collection process to be relatively straight forward. It definitely pays to have watched the online videos as the information given at pick up is very minimal. We didn't know that we had to put the first blue block into the toilet cassette, we realised there wasn't one in there when we emptied it. It definitely smelt better once we had put a blue block in! Luckily there is a card in the camper van showing basic instructions for operating the heater, attaching the waste water pipe etc. Camper van was in good condition and had everything we thought it would. The motorised bunk bed was actually pretty useful and a great use of space. Plenty of storage space for 2 adults and 2 under 10s. We took our own convector heater which was perfect for keeping warm when plugged in and meant we didn't use any diesel (not that the diesel heater uses much). Good sized fridge. Bedding supplied was really good, duvets were very warm. The seating area that converts to a bed was great although my husband and I are quite short so we could leave the outer cushions in place; a taller couple would need to remove these and so would be up against the cold outer walls. Fuel consumption was great, we did have to pay diesel kms on return but this didn't come to much. As others have said, pack into soft cases or duffle bags as you will need to shove them into cupboards and storage spaces (there was no room for hard suitcases) We found drop off to be simple and quick. We were lucky though as we were told that earlier in the drop off period the queues were really long. We would definitely do this again (at the current pricing), it would probably be even more enjoyable in summer when it's a bit warmer and we could spend more time outside using the outdoor table and chairs provided.
C.
I hired a Kea Breeze on a try before you buy basis and the Breeze is just what I want and was great to be able to work this out before a big outlay.
S.
We have had an awesome time in our rented Maui. We are now keen to buy our own motorhome. The Maui was basic but fine fkr our needs. It could do with a broom or a hand held lux. Half brush and pan didnt really do it!!
S.
Camper was great! Came with all the necessary bits and pieces and easy to operate. Vehicle had some grunt too so we weren't struggling up hills 🙌

Just completed a fab 19 day tour of the south island in our 4 berth Mercedes self contained campervan. There were just two of us. The campervan was very comfortable overall. The main issues were at pickup that resulted in an additional 2 hr delay. Not going into the detail here but overall while the van was clean, there had not been a comprehensive check of all aspects of the van ranging from well worn tyres to incorrect language setup on infotainment system and windscreen washer not operating amongst other things. I would definitely check that everything is working before leaving the compound. I felt I ended up doing the checks that Maui should have done. I reported these issues on return and they were all documented. The return process was very straightforward and took only minutes. Overall we were very happy with the van and I would rent from Maui again but they do need to be more comprehensive in their overall checks of their vans before releasing them for rental.
E.
We took up the cheap offer to get people to see NZ. Comments: staff were helpful enough. Unfortunately the motorhome required servicing after a few days hire, which was a bit annoying, the bed was 'very' uncomfortable and was more like a futon, but really great way to see the South island.
A.
All very good bar 2 issues. Was told I would save money by having the express return pack given the number of miles I would be travelling. This was not the case though - it cost an extra $100 approx over and above what I would have paid. Also waited 2.5 hours in Christchurch for the vehicle to be ready. Booked for 10am and didn’t get away until after 12-30 even though we arrived at the depot before 10am
j.
Easy pick up and paid for the 'no worries' return package. There are some hidden extras which is crafty and in small print. If you don't pay for the above package - full clean down and empty required, fill gas bottle and pay for the road user charge.
G.
The van we hired was well equipped, clean, easy to use. It even had a slide out bbq that we put to good use. Pick up was slow (almost 4h) but this was not the norm apparently.
The tires on the van were legal, but looked rather worn. I was not easy about this, but nothing I could do.
Looking forward to exploring New Zealand again in a Maui motor home.
B.
Campervan on road experience was great! Cosy and equipped with all the basics.
Had problems with our vehicle half way through but the Queenstown branch sorted us out (much friendlier there).
The check in process was extremely vague and we were on our way without any information on how to return or use the campervan's facilities.
When returning the vehicle, their expectations were rather high considering how little information they gave us when we first received the vehicle.
G.
The collection experience was not what we expected. The depot was very busy. We were there early for our collection which was scheduled for 1000-1100. After an hour or so of waiting around and completing basic paperwork we were told that our vehicle would not be ready until 1400. The delay had a significant effect on our plans for the first day of our trip.
We were provided with a lift to the nearest supermarket so that we could buy provisions.
We collected the vehicle shortly after 1400 and at that point the handover was quite speedy. The vehicle was clean and well presented. The linen pack was comprehensive and of good quality. It was not until the following day that we realised that the grey water tank had not been emptied.
After a day a rubber trim around the side door fell off and was dragging along the road until someone flagged us down. After a couple more days the cutlery drawer (which had an ineffective catch from the point of collection) fell apart and could no longer be used. We lived with these minor issues as we were too far from a Maui depot to take the vehicle in.
We also had a problem with the sat nav system which stopped working after about 10 days. We rang the helpline regarding this. The call was answered quickly and the problem was easily solved by following the advice given.
The return procedure was very simple, we basically handed over the keys. That said, we had paid extra for the express return facility.
We were provided with transport to the airport by the same drive who had taken us to the supermarket. He was very friendly and helpful.
L.
An excellent vehicle and a great experience to travel in a Motorhome. It was great! Could have done with more towels and T-towels.
The experience at the hire location where we picked up the Motorhome was very mediocre as they were clearly under-staffed, at least at that time of the day. Waited far too long to get seen; no information as to the wait and no apologies for the delay. However, the vehicle and what it allowed us to do made up for this negative start. Thankfully we were staying close by on the first night so the delay didn't impact us like it might otherwise have done.
J.
The motor rental worked well - the vehicle was ideal for our needs - we were 2 people in the 4 person van - we used the rear area during the day and then dropped the bed down at night. The Mercedes van was easy to drive and was reasonably economical with everything we needed on board. The only thing missing was the brush for the dustpan.
The only area to improve was the check out process at the start of the rental which took over 2 hours with lots of waiting around (it didn't need to be this long and could have been much more efficiently done - van wasn't ready needed to be checked etc)
It would be great to include the diesel mileage charges up front so that it avoids the bill at the end of the rental. We had a diesel vehicle in the North Island and the mileage was included rather than being an extra.
All in all we would do this again and book the same size / type of vehicle
g.
First time motor home users. Enjoyed the experience but Maui could improve their service. Maui just seem dis-organised. Slow pick-up, slow drop off, phone calls unanswered, no pick-up from the airport, inflexible, and the excuse of 'unprecedented demand' 4-6 weeks later shows they are not doing anything to improve their approach or listen to their customers. A few other customers had a similar view. It is a shame because the actual experience was great in the van, and the link with Top10 was good. We had the Ultima 2 berth which was perfectly functional - although couldn't get the hot water to work (and other travelers had same challenge) but everything else was well thought out - although discovered at the end that the people before us hadn't filled the gas bottle, and had to pay for a full re-fill (despite the processes asking for a receipt, when I dropped it off the guy asked people ' is it full' and didn't physically check or ask for proof).
M.
Our 3 week road trip around South Island got off to a bad start when we collected the van from Christchurch. We had an allocated time of 10:00 to collect the van, but we didn’t leave the RV centre until 12:00. Fortunately, we had sensibly planned not to travel far (Akaroa) the first day, but other hirers who were also delayed had 5 hour drives to do. The problem at the centre was that they were very busy (being a Saturday) and obviously understaffed. Also, the check-in system seemed to be poorly managed and the staff lacking in training. We only got our van after getting firmly insistent with a member of staff.
Because of the delay and I suspect because we mentioned that we had only recently hired a similar van, we were given a very brief handover (10 mins), most of which was occupied by the staff member attempting to configure the Sat-Nav but failing to do so because of lack of knowledge. I later set up Sat-Nav to work Off-Line, but only because I’m used to such devices. This lack of proper handover meant that we spent the first few days discovering how things worked in the van, again helped by being experienced campers.
The van itself (Ultima) was 100% reliable and clean and tidy on collection. However, we were given a 3 berth vehicle with a cycle-rack, whilst we had ordered a 2 berth without cycle-rack. The van layout for 3 berth is poorer than for 2 berth and the cycle-rack on the back is positively dangerous when shutting the back doors (although useful for drying swimming costumes on). We also discovered small shards of glass (looked like remnants of a broken van window) inside the storage lockers and behind the rear cushions. Again, a sign of poor van preparation.
At the end of first days travel, we discovered that the toilet floor was awash with toilet flush water that was coloured blue. Upon investigation, I discovered that somebody previously had put a toilet blue capsule into the toilet flush tank instead of the toilet cassette, causing the flush tank to overflow and the filling pipe was blocked. Again, this should have been spotted prior to, or during, hand-over. The toilet flush tank just about lasted 3 weeks and I wasn’t prepared to drive back to Christchurch and face further delays whilst they rectified the defect. Another sign of poor preparation was that after the first week I discovered that the tyre pressures were widely incorrect, but they remained OK after I had adjusted them.
My final comment is on the lack of equipment manufacturer’s instruction manuals in the vehicle for various electrical devices such as Micro-wave and Rear Radio (never did work how to use Bluetooth with it). The Drivers Info System is OK, but again no detailed instructions on how to configure Sat-Nav or Bluetooth etc. The Mercedes Vehicle Handbook details a totally different Info system. The “How To” videos on CamperHelp are limited in range, and had audio only. The instruction sheets in the van on how to use the Wi-Fi did not have the correct information on Network Name, etc. By the way, if readers are planning on visiting West Coast, assume no Mobile Internet and campsite Wi-Fi generally very poor. Download maps etc before you leave home and work off-line. I would recommend Wiki-Camps NZ app instead of CamperMate as supplied in the van.
Despite all of the above, we have had a fantastic tour of South Island and van never let us down and was comfortable to drive and live in. The return process was simple and quick, but we had paid for Quick Dropoff.
A.
1. Arrived 2pm at airport - collected by Maui at 3:15pm - after several phone calls to Maui.
2. Finally left Maui ChCh with our campervan at 6:30pm, due to:-
a. - extensive delay waiting for staff to process our booking;
b. - staff couldn't locate keys to our pre-booked and paid for campervan;
c. - our assigned campervan was unacceptable - dirty, burnt patches on floor and bench, 2 years old with 100,000kms (we'd paid for premium van). Staff said that the inside condition was not a concern to them, it was the outside appearance of their vehicles that mattered, but recognised the need to provide a satisfactory vehicle;
d. - our 2nd assigned van was rushed through hand-over, because it was getting late in the day. Van GPS was unable to be cleared of previous renters details (so we were given a portable TomTom GPS), and house battery meter showing 10. We were advised to go straight to a powered camping site (not planned in our itinerary) to charge up battery to normal range. It took several nights at powered sites to build up house battery storage, so that we could do our planned itinerary which included freedom camping. We left the Maui yard at 6:30pm.
e. - Left front tyre - we questioned it's tread and it looked like it needed air, but we were advised that it met Maui standards. Note below - Friday 21 February, a nail was discovered in this tyre.
3. On 21 February while driving through Stratford (Taranaki), we felt the front left tyre needed air. A Bridgestone mechanic advised that the tyre was below inflation pressure. At 9:04am, a Maui receptionist wanted us to drive to Taumaranui (she thought about 3 hours plus away on the Forgotten Highway) to get a new tyre. She gave us the impression she had no idea where we were - her geography orientation was appalling. She had us on hold for half an hour getting to this stage. We were not prepared to risk the drive to Taumaranui with a flat tyre, so she then arranged at 9:45am for a mobile AA mechanic to change the tyre. This AA man found a nail embedded in the tyre, and negotiated with the Maui receptionist to get the puncture repaired at the local Stratford Auto Services just around the corner. At 10:58am, we left the tyre service centre having had tyre repaired. This serviceman advised in his opinion, all tyres were due to be replaced. This service place provided excellent customer service.
4. Our drop off at Auckland was excellent - a complete reversal of our ChCh experience, and our Maui impression up to this stage. They were quick, efficient, and respectful.

Picked up motor home quickly as most of the paperwork we did on line. Got a quick tour of the motorhome which was mainly ok. As a non motorhome user a more basic talk would have been helpful mainly on the internal lights, the TV, the wipers and where the screen wash was and filling the water.Maui were very helpful on where the nearest supermarket was and dump station. We took out extra insurance on the vehicle which made the return of the vehicle which took a lot of potential stress away. A great holiday mainly because of the freedom the van gave us. Checking the van back in was easy and very efficient. Getting a hot drink and a shower before our flight finished the holiday off ⁸well. The only down side was the length of the hire
Two weeks is nowhere near enough time. Twenty five days would be a better option if you want to tour further south. Thank you Maui. B & V Miller.

This was our first time travelling in a camper van around the South Island then back to Auckland. We chose the River 6 Berth which was perfect for our needs. It provided plenty of space for 2 Adults and our 4 year old and had all the appliances we needed for a very comfortable trip touring. The process of booking and uplifting the vehicle was seamless and easy at the Christchurch Centre and was also reflected in the fuss free drop off at the Auckalnd Centre. I would highly recommend Maui Motorhomes to anyone wishing to travel in this way. We will be doing it again!
M.
We booked an elite motorhome in the expectation that we would get a pristine vehicle. It was under a year old. On pick up what we found was a scratched and dirty standard looking vehicle. Inside had not been cleaned properly and we had to clean the cooker before use. The process of registration, awaiting a crew member to show us the vehicle, getting management to accept it was below standard expected and finally getting a discount took over two hours. We enjoyed our experience with the motorhome overall, but for anyone who hasn't done it before, beware of parking problems with big motorhomes. Busy supermarkets are a no no, and difficulties also encountered at busy tourist spots. The shakes rattles and rolls whilst driving take some getting used to!
P.
Great service from the Christchurch crew, although the motorhome - our first rental - could have been better in a few ways:
The rear most bed cushions didn't stay in place very well leaving uncomfortable gaps in the base.
The drawers didn't stay shut very well so we had a number of instances of them flying open whilst on the road.
The water heater was rather unreliable.
The seal around the middle table leaked in heavy rain.
Some of the crockery was chipped.
The van drove well however - mostly comfortble & reliable albeit at 90,000 kilometres showing its age.
V.
Some waiting when we picked up van from Christchurch in New Zealand 2 weeks ago but other than that no complaints. New Mercedes-Benz, automatic, driving was pure pleasure with no problems driving up steep roads, parking camera, GPS, automatic air conditioning working well, bluetooth operated audio system while driving, indoors were clean and modern and spacious enough, fridge was well-sized. Definately recommend and will someday do again myself!
M.
We are happy with the service. Only thing is that the children seats were not installed voor us or even in the camper when we got the keys. We had to ask for them and to help with in stalling them. Also the children seats were dirty and uncomfortable (to hard). You would expect more. Especially when hiring for 34 day's. Everything else was ok and we enjoyed our holiday in/with the camper.
Would hire again with Maui.
C.
Check-in efficient, staff friendly. The agent told us we should disregard the indicators for fresh and waste water tank. However, we painfully had to find out after the first night that the fresh water tank was indeed empty and the waste water tank full and clogged. Had to look for tools in hardware shop and unclog pipe ourselves since the assistance service was not available to help us.
Also, the pillows and bedding had a greasy smell and when we removed the duvet covers, they turned out to be full of stains :-O
G.
We had the best holidays we could have with the Maui Mothorhome.
Nice, Safe and Easy.
S.
It has been a great experience hiring from Maui. As it was our 1st experience living in a campervan, we spend a great deal of effort in the research. Appreciate the prompt replies prior to the reservation team, answering to the details and providing more information to help in the decision making process.
Check in was smooth and the vehicle exceeded the expectation for comfort.Highly recommended for anyone who is looking to experience living in a campervan in New Zealand.
B.
GPS never worked reliably. Van itself was older than expected. Otherwise camper van is the very best way to visit beautiful New Zealand ..
Two weeks in a three person van. We are old so kept the double bed out for entire trip. First time to travel by van.
You earned a 4 out of 5 in our opinion.
Tennessee, USA
L.
Easy online booking and check-in system. Van in good order and clean/tidy. I have reduced a star due to the agonising wait time and handover experience before we headed off. It wasn't busy enough to justify such a delay (after signing everything) with a half hour wait just to be shown to the vehicle. Considering we checked in online and called the day before to confirm.
G.
The Beach campervan was really comfortable and good. The biggest challenge is booking it and trying to contact Maui prior to the rental (either by email or phone) - very hard. in the end I got in my car and drove to their yard at ChCh airport (twice)
R.
Hired ex ChCh for four nights, travelling to Springfield. Overnighted in the Kowai Camping Ground (recommended for Campervan stays too) with daily trips over to Lake Lyndon via Porters Pass. 3 guys - all worked out well.
J.
This was our first time in a campervan so was looking forward to this. The 2 berth Maui campervan was ideal for us. Everything was provided, the bed was comfy and everything worked as it should.
Only disappointing aspect was the pick up service. After filling in the mandatory paperwork we were taken to our campervan, asked to sign for any pre existing dents, then given the keys. The guy just walked off and left us to it. We had watched the how to videos but these were not always accurate or didn't cover everything e.g. the video on the inside of the cab showed a gear lever, whereas I spent 10 mins looking for gears which were on the steering wheel. Also no traditional handbrake as shown in the video. Instead this was a pull out lever on the dashboard. Also, spent 5 mins looking for the button or lever to release the diesel lock, only to later discover that this is opened by first opening the passenger door.
I know we are in a covid situation but this is no excuse for not explaining some basics on the vehicle. The person who showed us to the vehicle seemed very rushed and uninterested. He needs some upskilling in customer service.
People we dealt with at reception and when dropping off the vehicle were polite and engaging.
M.
We were really happy with almost everything. To get 5 stars, Maui would need to have it's "pickup" operation better organised, so that it runs on time even during peak season. We were relaxed, and had the day with no big plans: this is definitely the way to go on Camperan pickup day. Other than that: great van, well appointed, ran well, great holiday.
J.
We hired a River 6 berth motorhome to pick up from Christchurch and drop off in Auckland for 17 days. At both ends the procedures were easy, professional and didn't take too long although we had used the pre-checkin facility on line prior to pick up. Staff were very friendly and motorhome was exactly what we expected. All in all a very good holiday and no issues with the motorhome at all.
M.
To Maui. We have had the pleasure of renting one of you Campers with mixed pleasure. We have had major problems with the car being able to maintain power when we were on non power side camping and had a lot more expenses than planned on the power side and two days in the garage had hoped to be able to camp Freedom. at the handover in Aukland we were suspicious in our explanation of the problem and would not help anyone for compensation. I have now approached our travel agent My Plante and presented them our problem. But besides, we were pleased with the pickup in Christchurch and the contact to Maui during the trip. But the delivery and treatment in Aukland I am very dissatisfied with Kind regards. Michael Tillan in Maui KRU 552

Efficient, helpful and friendly staff. Pick up went smoothly, our self organised trip around South Island, NZ was memorable. The motorhome suited us perfectly and the return handover was quick and efficient. We had everything we needed in the motorhome to fulfill our needs.
A.
We had a great time in our Maui cascade, touring the South Island. We loved the drop down bed, the heating, the storage and the conveniences all in one. This is a super way in which to explore Aotearoa.
j.
I rent Maui ultima for 10 days, this is first time that i drive a campervan. The staff on christchurch office is kind and do pickup or drop off process quickly.
when we were drop-off day, all roads to Christchurch is closed by flooding. Two dams were damaged, so we couldn't drop off that day. The office staff of Christchurch suggest that return the car at Queenstown next day(we can' reach queenstown on that day, because we were too fay away, about 450km) we return the car next day but the manager says extended 1 day we will charge for free.
We spend huge costs to change the flight. He give us some hopes.
Thanks I will choose Maui next time.
B.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Campervan experience. This was our first Campervan holiday so were very impressed with the friendly helpful staff and the on-line videos which explained everything we needed to know.
We would recommend a Maui Campervan trip to all.
P.
We had a great time in our Maui Camper recently. Customer service was excellent. Vehicle was great.

I would like to say a big thank you to Maui (THL) for offering KIWIS the opprotuinty to see their backyard at an afforable price. Our family of five had the most amazing experice over 15 days travelling 2947kms around the South Island. The people, the country all first rate. The motorhome was absolutly first class and given its your accomadation, transport and "kitchen" at current rates I wish every NZ-er could do it. Thanks Maui, Nigel & Deborah Herbert/family
PS: I wonder if Rico Montulet (review/pic below of string holding cupboards/draws) knew the button[s] have two functions: "button out" the draws/cupboards click into place while stationary BUT to KEEP closed you have to "push the buttons in". Seems unusal for all the buttons to be not working. Just an observation!
S.
It was our first time I was nervous at the beginning but when I hit the road it was easy to drive. We had amazingly experience. The campervan was so safe and really tidy. Best experience ever
S.
The team at Christchurch were great to deal with. Check in and check out was quick and easy and the campervan provided was clean and tidy and an absolute pleasure to travel around NZ in. An awesome experience, thanks Maui Motorhome!
a.
We had great week in our camper. Only criticism was that the initial briefing was just that, brief. Simply being shown the inside and invited to ask questions isn't the best approach when you dont know what you dont know.
Make sure they show you how to assemble the bed to avoid a frustrating time on the first night.
The 0800 emergency number doesn't work on non-NZ phones so ask for one that does, unless you intend to buy a local sim card.
S.
At pick up the campervan was not clean (a lot of hairs on het matras), after mentioning this was cleaned. We thought the Maui would be a new campervan but it was fairly old, we have seen a lot of Britz campervans which were less old. We choose a Maui so that we would have a new one, would recommend not to next time.

Neil & Marlene Barrett: 2 weeks in a Maui Ultima on the South Island. Wonderful Mercedes Benz vehicle- compact, good to drive, extremely functional. Kaikoura- loved the seals; Hanmer Springs hot springs; Geraldine for great food, people & crafts; Te Anau - Getaway Holiday park excellent location for a great lakeside stay; Aoraki- stunning with snow; Milford Sound Cruise Milford a highlight- sheer glory of the sire, penguins & seals; Wanaka - great stop; Akaroa - lovely last night. We did a campervan in 2007 on the South Island & loved it and our recent 2019 experience well & truly surpassed the memories - easy, fun- love the convenience of a home on wheels. Check in & out super efficient; CamperMate app in the van was terrific. Convenience of the exterior barbecue meant we had relaxed cooked breakfasts & dinners when we wanted. Couldn’t have asked for a better holiday. Very highly recommend our Maui Ultima experience & holiday. Will plan to do again.
L.
Friendly, efficient team upon arrival to collect our motorhome.
The only reason l didn't give 5 stars is the lady said " have you watched the series of how-to videos about using the motorhome? Er no, we have been crazy busy getting our work done to allow us the time for our holiday - so we spent two days learning by trial and error, not ideal. She was kind and lovely - but USELESS. And no snow chains available as promised - luckily we happened to not need them.
That aside, we set off for two weeks travelling sometimes windy, steep roads throughout the South lsland. Our Maui - chosen as it was under two years old and therefore minimizing the chance of faults or breakdown - was perfect at all times and in all regards. Plenty of power so we did not inconvenience other vehicles, reliable, handled well on all the roads. The linen was in great condition and the duvets were beautiful and warm. The diesel heater ran all night and was economical. Wonderful campervan fit out and it did everything we needed/expected.
Thanks so much Maui for this opportunity via your #getnzmoving promotion, we would use your brand again in a heartbeat 🙏
m.
Arrived at Christchurch depot to collect motorhome - a process which took 3 hours and is not really acceptable. Seemed to few people available to deal with number of customers trying to collect Motorhomes
The motorhome was basic, numerous minor niggley faults and not nearly as comfortable as out caravan at home
However it served us well in touring the South Island
Most irritating thing though is they give you a hose to fill the fresh water tank BUT DONT give you the adaptor you need to connect onto the taps on the sites. You have to find a DIY shop and buy one which cost a couple of pounds.
Bearing in mind the amount you pay to rent the motorhome you would expect details like this to be covered and the vehicle to be fault free
J.
We absolutely loved travelling in a 6 Berth Maui campervan for 5 nights. We travelled from Chch vis Arthurs Pass down the West Coast to Bluff, thru Caitlins and up the East Coast. It was well equipped and enough room for 2 adults and a 12 year old, having a bed each. Would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. We shared the driving, with no problems.
J.
The mileage of the motorhome we collected has been already 100,000 km. The condition was not as new as what we expected to book from Maui as a brand. The fridge was even smelly and dirty before we requested the staff to clean it again. Overall, it was not worth it to pay much more to book from Maui instead of other similar choices.
A.
If you are hiring a motor home or camper van from this business, please note: Maui/Britz/Mighty is a massive business with hundreds of vehicles in their rental fleet. When you arrive to collect the vehicle you will be waiting for at least one hour, most probably more. There is a very slow sign-up procedure to go through before you are given the vehicle. If you are impatient and expecting 5-star service you will just end up angry and frustrated so be prepared to w-a-I-t.
In the high season there will be many other people also hiring motor homes at the same time as you. You will have to wait in a queue but there are a few tables/flat sofas to sit on. First in first served, just wait. There’s coffee/tea/water available to soothe your rage!
During this waiting time it can be very entertaining to sit beside the “Returns” area and listen/watch as furious Germans and Australians vent their spleens to nonchalant staff about broken/damaged /inadequate/ filthy aspects of their campers or the lack of roadside service. Listen up here because you may learn something to your benefit.
Most of the staff are not New Zealanders, they appear to be young transients. They are in a hurry to get the paperwork done and some do not know much about the vehicles when they are handing them to you. They will try to give a cursory tour around the vehicle but make sure you get a thorough explanation of all your vehicle’s facilities. Don’t let them rush through it. Before you sign anything, and drive away make sure you go around the vehicle and observe all existing panel damage, scratches, dents etc and note these on the pre-rental check diagram you are given. The more you note the better, or you may be accused of having damaged the vehicle later. Caveat emptor. Also, there are hidden costs that you may not be aware of when budgeting for your holiday. If you are driving a diesel vehicle (most of them are) you will be charged a certain amount per kilometre for road user charges at the end of your trip.
Enjoy your holiday, and if you have a terrible experience with this business, please remember that not all NZrs are out to fleece you, and most are nice, approachable, helpful, relaxed people. Some may be too casual compared to what you are used to but that's the NZ way.

Great service and good explanations regarding the function of the camper van rented. Everything was in great order and the return of the vehicle was also smoothly expedited.
J.
Super easy pick up and drop off, camper was great to drive and plenty of room for two of us, super fuel efficient and nice and cosy with the heater, loved it 🤙🏻
M.
Clean, well maintained vehicle. Clear instructions on use although poor radio reception and gps/Wi-fi signal resulted in use of personal equipment.
We travelled from Kaikoura to Stewart Island and from Christchurch to Doubtful Sound and the glaciers. Wonderful. We will return.
k.
Have hired these vans several times before in the past, this redesigned model is terrible, they made room for one extra but reduced the living space, designed by an accountant, should have been designed by a camper, the van was not serviced very well, hence we had problems and did not enhance our holiday experience at all, not good. If you are a single person it would be all right, but very expensive, for two people you now need a four berth.
d.
Great service and the thl app with the video clips are very helpful.
A.
We hired a 6 berth Maui campervan to tour the NZ South Island. The van was perfect and easy to drive. The customer service was excellent and it would be hard to find a more beautiful place to visit. You will not regret a holiday like this :)
C.
Our motorhouse was super clean and new. Very confortable when driving and also well equipped. But solution gave to "solve" the issue with the hot water was completelly usless and we couldn't free camp any day because of that. Very disappointed about that.
A.
Good service mind, I'd change vehicle from manual to auto transmission after got the key of manual, Maui staff help to change smoothly
J.
We found the staff really friendly and knowledgeable. The RV supercentre is large and has plenty of room for multiple people checking in.
The express checkout was a good option to get you on the road back to the airport at the end of the trip.
M.
MAUI are great to deal with we have just rented from them for the 3rd time. The new campers are very well laid out, easy to drive like a quality hotel on wheels.
D.
Rented from appollo b4
Cheese and chalk
Better service , better condition vehicle
Will rent from Maui again chair's and table included in price of vehicle outside BBQ vs appollo where everything is extra
Be back to rent in December again
P.
It was a great experience, our first road trip in a motorhome. We will never forget the places and moments my husband, our daughters and I had togheter driving throughout the beautiful New Zeland's South Island roads.
R.
Was fantastic experience travelling with our camper van and the van was great it became a friend. the only thing I will say is it took 2 hours to collect our camper which is not what you want after a long flight I think you need more staff on the ground.
S.
Had a great time with our Maui Campervan. A pleasure to drive and very comfortable.
Check in was a long time at Christchurch only negative.
C.
Great staff and good service. We had problems twice with our campervan but the road assistance was really efficient. They got to us in 10 minutes the first time and we had to wait only 30 minutes the second one. We also got a present for the problems we had at the return of the van. Nothing to complain about.
M.
I got their 3-berth campervan which is very easy to drive. They offer the free shuttle service only every 2 hours which is not convenient and is not stated in their website or emails.
B.
The van was great. Booking in and checking out was tedious. Also using my credit card as a "deposit" for the excess cover, cost me over $100. You used to be able to use a credit card as cover for the excess they just put a hold... These guys actually charged the card $4,000 and then refunded the$4,000 when we returned the van.. the credit card exchange cost was $100+...
E.
The campervan was fabulous, clean and in good working order and the engine was gutsy. Very happy and recommend to others
L.
Best customer service I've had in a long time. We only askes for a quote but we were offered a hot beverage and a comfortable seat in their lounge.
At the end of the day we went another route, but I would recommend anyone to walk in to their offices and be served as a premium client.
L.
Fabulous holiday loved our little van. Picking up the van disappointing took 2 hrs to get underway. Staff were under pressure, but professional .
L.
Camper for a week's trip south. Loved it. Good service.
E.
You should do something about the bed sqabs, they take the body moisture v quickly and are wet after a few days, either put holes on the base underneath or come up with some other remedy or they will turn mouldy (as they did on an accompanying van)
Otherwise: a good experince
T.
We did an amazing trip around South Island. Great service, very good to drive. Recommend.
l.
Better than a hotel. Extremely well organised and easy experience, giving you the freedom to experience the country at your own pace with many great camping areas to choose from. We would definitely do it again.
M.
Good helpful staff. Fairly quick turnaround when picking up and dropping off vehicles. No issues and we will probably use them again
W.

g.
Fantastic deal, every kiwi should get into it. Good late model vans, easy to drive and with so few people on the roads its a great experience.
C.
Great campervan! Lovely and clean. Comfortable & warm for a winter holiday. Great service.
J.
Professional operation but needs more staff for peak season .van was well presented and as advertised.pity couldn't leave the stupid bean bags as they were a real pain and robbed space .tires and shock absorbers were perfectly adequate but seriously deficient if your used to driving a van equipped with higher spec .make sure to get good insurance and photo whole van before heading out ...we had two weeks trouble free motoring
J.
Very easy and simple to deal with. A great way to do out holiday and an awesome way to start it with these guys. But nothing overly amazing about the campervan hire that we wouldn't have got other places.
T.
Very spacious here, but the process might take more than half n hour
P.
Wonderful friendly staff, excellent attention to detail, ideal way to see our lovely country. Already started planning our next trip ;)
D.
This was a great way to get around South Island. The low speed limits and quiet roads make driving very enjoyable, even on the narrow, steep and winding roads!
I.
Amazing experience, we had our first family holiday in New Zeland we are glad to have this opportunity our campervam was perfect and almost new.
K.
Make sure you check how clean your van is before driving off. All in all it was good but wasn't what I expected from a very well known company
I.
Spacious reception. Friendly and helpful start. Great camper. What more can you ask. Quite a trek from the city centre (about $50 taxi ride) though great for the airport.
c.
Had a great experience with Maui! The motorhome was excellent and drop off process was super easy

All very efficient. Had to make a call to check on pick up at airport. Once we had accurate directions we were sorted. Picked up perfect fit campervan for 10 days. Really clean on the inside, plenty of linen and blankets. Very comfortable. Had an issue that was sorted with another phone call and small detour to our day but efficiently solved.
H.
Rented the Maui Ultima 2+1 Berth Campervan from the great team at the Christchurch Branch. The service was amazing with Tamsin and the team going above and beyond at making sure we were comfortable on how to use everything. On the road, the camper performed so well - we had no issues our whole 11 day trip and loved every second. It was clean, comfortable and the layout maximised the space well. The app was a great touch and very easy to use. Would not hesitate to rent from Maui again, it was a dream!
B.
We hired a Maui 6 berth from Queenstown to Christchurch for a 18 day booking. We ended up doing circa 3,000 k's going around the South Island. We had a fabulous time in our camper and highly recommend holidaying in a camper van and doing it through Maui. When I first saw the size of the camper van I was a bit awe struck, thinking that it would be difficult to drive. It wasn't. It is no different to driving a car, only that it is longer and higher. It had everything that we needed, and once we unpacked our bags and started our journey it was truly our home on wheels and we were proud of her. We even gave her a name!! The Maui team looked after us very well, provided us great accommodation and wheels and ensured that we had everything that we needed before we gingerly drove her out the gates. The THL app is awesome and is a must. You will use it a lot to find campsites etc. Upon returning the camper van at Christchurch the staff were helpful and keen to ensure we had a good time. We didnt want to hand the keys back. Thanks guys. I highly recommend camper van trips (better than motels)and using Maui.
M.
Loved the 6 berth campervan, a home away from home, such a fantastic way to travel. Our pick up from Christchurch airport took a long time, in all fairness I think the team were short staffed during covid. The camper was modern, clean and well equipped. We made our own checklist of must-dos before driving off each day, a starting template for this at the time of pick up would be helpful. The navigation system in the campervan was a little unreliable, at times we had to use maps. Overall a great way to travel.

(Translated) Same office as Maui and Brits. 10 minutes by car from the airport. After an hour of killing Wi-Fi, the shuttle seems to be traveling back and forth three times an hour. Service fine.

K.
(Translated) It is about 8 minutes drive from the airport. Car rental companies provide shuttle buses, but the pick-up procedure is a bit slow. Even if the trip is reported on the Internet earlier, it still takes about 40 minutes to get the car. The staff's explanations were clear and easy to understand, and they would give suggestions. The condition of the car was good, the cleanliness needs to be strengthened, and everything else was good.

(Translated) We traveled as a couple with the Maui Ultimo for five weeks through the islands of New Zealand. It's a bit cramped in the car, but it's practical and has everything you need for a longer trip. We were very surprised that the bed turned out to be very comfortable. Only the digital on-board system could not convince. The screen was hardly visible from the driver's seat for both the navigation and the reversing camera. In addition, the price of one gigabyte of data at NZ $ 35 is very high.
Conclusion: It was a great trip with "our" Maui. 👍😄
(Original)

(Translated) The camper takeovers were a gross imposition for us personally. We waited 3 hours each until we were offered a lower-class camper in Tasmania, which we of course rejected. In Christchurch our camper already had 110,000 km on the clock. Based on the experience in Tasmania, we accepted this without comment. In Tasmania, only the boss serves the numerous incoming customers. Questions are commented on whether we do not see that they are understaffed. Is it the customer's fault? In any case, he has to pay for it. Not a high end product.
(Original)
Kein highend Produkt.

(Translated) 3.7 has a reason. I met a lot of tourists ... everyone seems to have one camphor van.
The first car I received here was not able to operate in one hour due to an engine error, so I got one night from my treatment and got a second car late the next day.
The second car did not have air-conditioner gas, so I visited it again in two weeks ...
(Original)
