S.I went to Avis the day I arrived after initially booking with another rental company that failed to explain they wouldn't take a debit card bond.
The staff at the counter were very helpful, explaining that I could still book online (cheaper rates) and immediately pick up the car. I spent the next two weeks with an awesome Camry Hybrid.

Easy to book with online and when we needed clarity with closing hours and delays in our flights they were willing to accommodate and stayed open till we arrived.
A nice warm welcome by John (consultant at Queenstown Airport) and after a few Ts and Cs we were in our vehicle and out of the airport.
We returned the vehicle a bit late and thankfully they nice enough to refill our gas tank at no extra cost aside from the cost of gas.

N.Good pricing, easy to deal with. Always deal directly with car companies not third parties as if anything happens, the contracts are usually difficult to sort out as opposed to dealing direct with a car rental company.
M.Quick easy transaction at counter, car was RAV 4 Toyota, drove well and was good on fuel, needed a windscreen clean with credit card to remove the ice and we were in our way
K.A good operation, we were nervous about dropping off without the attendant checking the car so we found someone to run their eye over it, and took note of their name. Was all good. Only issue was the car has Bluetooth and all playback devices disabled which meant for much of the 2 week holiday around South Island we were stuck listening to some religious church music as the only radio station available!!!!! Not good Avis.
D.but book travel insurance. exess is included normally 3k plus. we didn't so had to pay another $ 40+ a day. to cover it. cheaper with travel insurance. only about $ 80 for whole trip
j.We rented car from Christchurch and returned it to Queenstown Airport. We forgot a cell phone in the car and Ginny, Luke, and the rest of the staff went above and beyond to get the cellphone back to us. Amazing!
