Although you can't get close to the church, it is still a central point and an iconic location; however, there is nothing more to do here than watching pigeons perch on the roof.

The cathedral is closed to public as it got damaged by the 2011 earthquake. One portion is completely damaged. It is a bit of an eyesore in the center of this beautiful city. It would be good to restore the broken portions or demolish the cathedral altogether and build a new one.

It is a quite depressing place, people died in the earthquake, they lost their home, their family and their friend. After many years, the government didn’t do much, the church remains a ruin nowadays. As a symbol of Christchurch, I would like see the government rebuilding the church someday.

The Christchurch Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Christchurch and was an attractive historic building at Cathedral Square, originally built between 1864-1904. Sadly, the cathedral was severely damaged beyond repair during the earthquakes of 2010-11. We were lucky to have been able to visit the Christchurch Cathedral in 2009 before the quakes. It was an attractive and memorable place to visit. Returning to Christchurch recently, it was sad seeing the cathedral in its present state of ruins and disrepair. What you see now is the heavily damaged building, a downed tower and sectioned off grounds, all fenced off from visitors. There are viewing sections between the Godley Statue and cathedral where you can peer through a gated section to see the damaged church. Have a brief peek at the cathedral ruins and remains when you pass through Cathedral Square and then continue onward with your intended sightseeing elsewhere in Christchurch.

The cathedral is fenced off and the downtown area is quite depressed. There are shops if you walk just a bit further up the street and the vibe there is great. Outdoor space, eateries, stores. I give the area around the cathedral 4 stars b/c the atmosphere is a bit depressing.

Lovely space to walk through on any day, an historical location that's certainly worth visiting despite it's current state; still heavily damaged from the 2011 earthquake. Although it has a rather somber vibe its worth the visit simply to acknowledge its significance to history and the local community. Aside from the cathedral there are other sculptures to look at as well as small vendors spread out in the area selling food and coffee, there's also free wifi available. A very short walk from the more vibrant city centre, there are plenty of places to sit and appreciate the area.

The Christchurch Cathedral was designed by the prolific English architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, who was one of the most successful Gothic Revival exponents of the Victorian Era. Benjamin Mountfort also collaborated in the project, redesigning the church’s spire and monitoring the construction process once it began. The cathedral’s cornerstone was laid in December 1864, while its foundations were completed in 1865. Erecting a cathedral in the square was a slow process. In fact, it took 10 years for Christchurch’s first appointed Anglican bishop, Henry John Chitty Harper, to get the construction under way. Money ran out after laying the foundations, and arguments were made that the funds would be better spent elsewhere. Still, Harper persevered, managing to get the build back on track by promising to pay for a part of it out of his own pocket. Construction resumed in 1873, and was officially concluded after the addition of the chancel and transepts in 1904. The final cost at the time totalled to £65,572.

Sad to see, hope they find the funds to restore the church.

Visited 2019 August it’s been 8 years since the earthquake but it’s still under construction and fences are around it. You can still look at it through the fences. It’s in the middle of the city and I would say it’s still the symbol of Christchurch. Hopefully it’s all renovated by my next return.

Going to give this 5 stars as it is truly a great landmark and icon for Canterbury. Absolutely disappointed in the fact that the rebuild of the Cathedral has not begun. How many years has it been since the Feb 22, 2011 earthquake that destroyed the building. No excuses are acceptable now given the amount of time that has passed. I have to say rebuild, fix the Cathedral as this is absolutely ridiculous. Give the city something to be proud of and restore this great building.

Since the city doesn't know what to do with it, it's a reminder of the damage that Christchurch suffered during the earthquake. A part of history to see.

I unfortunately never got the chance to go inside the cathedral while it was open but it has always been an incredible place for me and I love seeing the care put into it's construction. Even though it's not what it used to be I would still recommend giving it a visit.

Beautiful building in ruins. It shows the descrution of the earthquakes extremely well, and what happens if a building is left untouched for only a few years, as it is already overgrown. I personaly think they should've taken the route of creating the ruins as a tourist attraction and a memorial rather than restoring it or taking it down. It's a real pity they're recreating it because the church lying there crumbling in its ruins will show exactly what CHCH has gone through. Too late to turn back though now...

the cathedral is pretty huge and nice! the perimeter around it means you cant get too close which is a pity, but you can head to the library to get a better, overall view of the cathedral! there’s lots going on around the cathedral in the square as well

Having visited the Cathedral years ago, it was very sad to see it all broken, and to hear there is an argument going on to rebuild or demolish and move on. I think it should be made safe and let it be a memorial to those who lost their lives and were injured on that awful day. These days we are too quick to demolish and move on. Some things need to be kept as a reminder as once was, and to remember.

Left just as it was after the earth quake it has become a monument of what Christchurch went through. It doesn't look like it is repairable. There are huge cracks in the side as well as the front basically missing.

Unfortunately this suffered significant damage in the 2010/2011 due to earthquakes and is now in the process of being demolished. Was a beautiful building, now a terrible reminder of the devastation caused. Please support chch in the rebuild

This place is supposed to be an excellent tourist attraction, however since it is being renovated due to the damage caused by earthquake, and fenced pretty tight, then people hardly take picture of it

Sad view. But at the same time all the reconstruction works still going on around in other buildings are a message of strength and willingness not to give up.

It used to stand majestically in the centre of town, something you could see from a far now it just sits there as a reminder of the bad times but also gives inspiration, you could walk nearby and stand and take a picture in a designated area

Had the pleasure of seeing it before the earthquake and it was absolutely stunning in and out. So much history and the detail was one of a kind.
