Reviews of Fort Greene
C.
UNBELIEVABLE. The plain croissant here is just out of this world. I want to buy a box of it and just have it for lunch and dinner. It’s fluffy on the inside, crunchy on the outside. Maybe it was a stroke of luck that I had mine when it just came out of the oven but whatever it is…. I’m definitely coming back here for more. They have other great dishes on the menu too. If you’re going for a meat dish, try the Reuben!
A.
Had a wonderful time catching up with my friend. Good coffee, price was okay considering it’s in the city. LOVED the Ruben Sandwich, and the Barista was lovely. Also previous had the best almond croissant for take away. Will visit again for brunch and to read.
S.
Great customer service and definitely one of the best croissants I’ve ever had. Pictures attached are the kimchi grilled cheese and the Reuben
D.
Had breakfast at Forte Greene today, and the pastries and coffee were delicious, but service was heckling. I am not a particularly adept coffee drinker, so do take my time to finish a coffee. Otherwise, I get palpitations. I was waiting for a friend to come by for lunch too, so had time to spare. Unfortunately, the staff, on behest of the owner, came out to "check in" on me 3 times in a relatively short amount of time. Asking me if I needed more coffee/food. Finally, I was told to vacate by 11.30 for lunch service.
I understand the need to keep traffic moving in a f&b establishment, but it was not as if I weren't a paying customer. The intention was to have lunch with a friend on top of the pastry and coffee I had gotten for breakfast (I was there at 10, and left at 11). On top of that, the establishment was not full – there were available tables for new customers.
It's not a pleasant experience to be rushed to leave a place as a paying customer, especially when it did not affect their business one way or another. Does service mean so little today? If the cafe was full, I would have left, or shared my table with other guests as it should be, so did not appreciate the harassment that made me feel like I was an unwanted lurker at this cafe.
K.
Had a wonderful brunch today. House made bread was superb. Took home the pain au chocolat, cinnamon cruffin and a croissant, absolutely delish. Service was friendly and prompt. Good all round experience.
S.
Really great coffee tremendous service ideal spot to catch up with clients.
Only 4 stars as they don't do Decaf. COFFEES.
Had a standard Late and it was very pallettable.
Definitely go there again.
O.
The most incredible sandwiches - had The Reuben and The Fish One and it was absolutely mouthwatering. Chocolate almond croissants were the best I've had. No words.
D.
Only had their croissants before and it was really good. Definitely need to come back and try their other baked goods
G.
Amazing coffee and croissants! We had a chocolate and an almond, they really are the best I’ve had in Auckland.
My only complaint is that the service wasn’t great, the woman who served us seemed a bit distracted, and very busy. It would have been nice to see more staff on to help.
L.
My all time favourite brunch place in whole Auckland!
Great staff, amazing coffee and food to die for. Those guys have their hearts in this business and you can really feel and taste it.
The pastries are proper and just delicious!
If you looking for a great brunch menu and great bread and pastries, pay them a visit!
g.
Best croissant ever. Hands down. Will buy their sourdough or baguette next time!
L.
The BEST almond croissants that I’ve ever had and they’re even way better than the ones that I had in whole France. So crispy, buttery and flakey with amazing doughiness!! The vege sandwich was tasty as well. First bite kinda lacked flavour but after you tasted the filling inside it’s lit. Highly recommended this lovely cafe and it will definitely be my regular spot for brunch:)
B.
Had a stroll around K Rd before deciding to come here for lunch. They are a bakery that also serves food. Most of their items are sandwiches.
I had the toasted cheese and a friend had the vege one. I personally found the taste of blue cheese to be a bit overwhelming for the toasted cheese. The pickles were really nice with it too. The vege sandwich was huge and very delicious. The veges and nuts inside the sandwich was tasty and filling. My favourite was the cassava chips though. Crispy on the outside and almost chewy on the inside and served with a spicy mayo. It was a nice side to go with the sandwiches.
A really nice place particularly if you are a sandwich person. Nice selection of filling and it was all very tasty.
K.
Omg yum! Best croissant ever, so crunchy & buttery. Also had a choc chip cookie & the coffee was really creamy even though I had a milk alternative. Such a lovely homely little cafe. The owners are pretty funny if you can get to chat to them 🤪
R.
Fort Greene's bread is of outstanding quality. It is a fresh local response to traditional sour dough techniques. They make sourdough with caraway seed.
The sprouted wholemeal and barley bread is brilliant. The baker here is very talented and hard working. He takes risks and makes a unique style of sour dough. Highly recommended.
Best Reuben sandwich in Auckland.

*Updated 16/5/21:
Vast improvement since last visit over 1.5 years ago.
Food and coffee were excellent, and staff alot more friendlier than the "French Maitre d era".
J.
Very good coffee and probably the greatest Reuben Sandwich I’ve ever had. Can not recommend it highly enough. And the Cinnamon Cruffin was fascinating!!!
S.
Delicious pastries, some of the best I’ve had in New Zealand in a nice looking cafe. Average coffee and kinda rude service was the let down.
M.
Tasty breakfast. Nice service. Good coffee. Reasonable price.
B.
We called in toward the end of the day with just enough time for a flat white. It was a nice strong brew. Really full rich coffee. Definitely going back. It says alot about a place when the coffee is memorable
S.
Was worth looking around for a parking. Picked up my online order, pastries were light and buttery and melted in your mouth, amazing.
J.
My family are hard to please.
When I was tasked with getting the croissants for Christmas morning I thought "I'll never find the perfect croissant to please them".
But I was wrong.
My cooking connoisseur neice said "perfectly layered, buttery as you can get, baked to perfection, where did you get them John?"
The secret is out.
"John, you're getting the croissants every year now".
But why wait till Christmas?
X.
Wonderful croissants, hospitable staff. Highly recommended!
M.
What a lovely, cosy place! Great coffee and possibly the best grilled sandwiches! The kimchi grilled cheese was delicious and the Reuben looked amazing!
T.
Great place, great food and drink! Pasties are amazing. Truly great experience!
Definitely recommended!
K.
Stop here for breakfast one Wednesday morning.
Great service, i had the coconut black rice porridge with grilled pineapple, coconut yogurt & puffed wild rice which was delicious.
I loved the smell of baked bread, the cafe had just opened for the day and liked the decor.
Definitely recommend coming here if your on k'road.
C.
Loved this place… Highly Recommend… Excellent service. Beautiful and Tasty food… Will definitely visit again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
B.
Excellent people, food, coffee, bread, pastries, decor. My favourite café in Auckland
C.
Simply delicious, bakery and café - for me the best on K-Stree.
All fresh products and treats served with a big smile.
Absolutly recommended.
Try the grilled cheese with their homemade pickles, or the pain au chocolat almond - food heaven.
They also have the local newspaper 🗞, good for getting off the smartphone while getting on their delicious food.
D.
Damn these sandwiches are great. Big slices of baguette, perfect amount of crunch on the outside and soft inside. The fillings are tasty. Nice beer/cider selection as well.
R.
Delicious and interesting menu, friendly service, great coffee, wonderful bread
R.
Love the food here...such a shame it's not open on sundays though....but the other cafe in St Kevens is.... you'll need to wait to get a table (it's always busy) but the food makes the wait worthwhile
A.
Easily the best Pain au chocolat in Auckland if not NZ.
S.
Just need to update this review to point out that 5 years later I am still a huge fan of Fort Greene. I am now a sourdough convert and their croissant are definitely the best I've ever had.
5 years ago I wrote:
Buttermilk pancakes with poached tamarillo was superb and the 4 cheese grilled sandwich was super tasty. Great cozy atmosphere, friendly intimate service and excellent coffee.
E.
Outstanding coffee and the most delicious pastries and sourdough EVER
E.
If there’s somewhere I would like to hide from people, it would be Fort greene. Food, coffee and BREAD ... everything is just lovely.
e.
Well worth a visit. We’ll be back 👍🏾👍🏾
V.
A beautiful place to have brunch, nice deco, I love their croissant.
A.
Cute place and despite not having food there, everything that was going out looked amazing. Service was friendly.
C.
Lovely cafe and bakery serving fantastic breads and and espresso. Very clean ambiance perfect for a sit down.
Pictured: Almond Croissant and Americano.
M.
Great sandwich even if a bit difficult to eat.
L.
Fresh bread daily baked,
Great coffee and sandwiches (Rueben ++)
B.
Had a really tasty kimchi grilled cheese sandwich. Not sure what they do to the cheese but it makes it super tasty
L.
Very nice environment, comfortable place and good service. Perfect place for a breakfast.
C.
Amazing food! Especially the baguette croissants and paint aux chocolats. Even in France you cannot find this quality really often! Well done!
A.
Lived in France for 6 years, this place makes one of the Best tasting plain croissants. Pastry is made from scratch using their own butter pastry folding machine!!
M.
Their croissant and pain au chocolat are a delish !!! Buttery and soft but crispy at the same time ! Baguette are perfect as well
Can’t wait for my next visit !!
S.
Always visit here when I can for our weekly bread (best in Auckland), and for a coffee and chat with both locals and staff. I'm almost scared to highly recommend the cruffins incase they sell out and I have a mutiny on my hands with disappointed kids. Love the ambiance, and that the owners did deliveries during lock down made it even better.
K.
One of the best. I’ve been a regular for years, and the work and love this family-owned business put in is truly phenomenal. Almost everything is made from scratch and Liam (the baker) is a perfectionist in the best possible way. Andrea (FOH) and her barista crew make the best coffee in Auckland. Pastries are incredible and the sandwiches just amazing. Go for the grilled cheese with fried egg and don’t forget the (house-made) hot sauce! If you want to support a true independent business, head there ASAP.
J.
Lovely service and delicious sandwiches and croissants.
D.
Haven't been here in over a year as every time I've come in for a coffee it's always been over-extracted to within an inch of it's life by the grumpy rude French lady that always seems to be working there :/
Was pleasantly surprised today though with a lovely brew from the young chap who also recommended I try the almond croissant (delicious! Best I've had in New Zealand) and he also recommended I take home some of their renowned sourdough to try (so good – rivals that of ones I've had in San Fran)
Worth a visit – I will definitely be back!
P.
I have been buying six croissants every Sunday from Fort Greene (to share with family and flatmates that keep asking for more). I don't usually write reviews but I can honestly say this place knows how to bake. Everything tastes good and I can assure you that they make the best croissants in all of Auckland. Keep up the good work Fort Greene!
R.
YUM!! A little pricey but expect to leave very happy 😋 the decor is quite pretty as well.
S.
My favourite place to get a Reuben sandwich - especially as it's so hard to find a place that uses caraway rye for the bread. They also do the best chai latte my hubby has ever tasted (his exact words). Staff are lovely and you get swift service even when they are busy.
R.
Great breakfast and lunch place right on K' Road. Recommend by our hotel and food was really good. We went back for breakfast today. Organic eggs and bacon. Super fresh and delicious. Nice strong coffee as well.
S.
The pastries are totally 6/5 and especially the plain croissant takes me back to Paris where I had my first French croissants ever, and it’s taken 9 years to find croissants as good as those ones.. So glad I found this place although as others have also said in their reviews, I also found the service very poor and unwelcoming, such a pity since the place has great potential..
X.
Quaint eatery with a nice upstairs alcove serving (among other bready things) what is probably the best fish finger sandwich in the Antipodes.
H.
For some bizarre reason they wouldn't serve my rendang without bread, which meant that some of the delicious sauce was wasted as it was sucked up by the sourdough, but despite that it was worth the visit. Great coffee. Extra star if they'd have let me off the bread.
S.
Hands down best bread and vienoisserie in NZ. I love that they take the time to make EVERYTHING in house. No packet food, everything sustainably and ethically sourced. Family run and family feel.
R.
Great little spot with a good range of baked goods. If you have time also a great selection on the menu
S.
Great food and coffee. Delicious smoothies too! And the decor is very cute. This would be the perfect cafe to sit and do work, if only they had wifi!
G.
Cafe setting is great. The arcade is nice etc etc. The toasted sandwich my clients had looked and smelt great. However, I was taken back to find they don't do decaf as a matter of policy. Front of house were quite defensive.
T.
Great atmosphere, delicious coffee. We has the bread board cheese toastie and almond croissant. The best almond croissant I have ever had!
D.
Ordered 2 large coffees, 1 contained an extra shot.
We paid $12 which I find even for K'Road quite pricey. Could tell the Barista probably wasn't too experienced just yet (totally normal everyone has to start somewhere). However, you would expect that someone supervises her whilst making coffee to ensure quality. Cashier was semi friendly & the interior looks nice.
We waited about 10 minutes for the coffees which were OK but had quite a bit of coffee grinds floating in them. Would probably return if no other place is open.
E.
Nice ambience & lovely to sit at on a rainy day. Service is...average, I’ve come here many times (used to love it when it first opened in St Kevs) but have found the FOH staff to be a bit off on occasion and quick to get your order in and you out. Good food and coffee, bit of a shame they dont offer soy milk as some of us dont love coconut or oat mylk options!
S.
Sandwich is an investment, but its like buying a property, it's well worth it!! Service a delight and coffee also great
E.
Really vegetarian sandwichrs that changes often so you always have a reason to come back. The bread they use is made from scratch and the cassava wedges are also amazing! It's the perfect cafe to visit after a walk in Myers park.
N.
Went today and tried the reuben sandwich, it was nice but could have used more pickle to add a bit more tang, generous portion of pastrami. Recommend getting the hot sauce to dip and would put a bit of salt on next time too
M.
had a vege one and my mate had a fish one, was very nice and filling sandwich
A.
Favourite croissants and bread in Auckland. Amazing service during lockdown. Their bread mix is perfect for making pizza dough. And the Cubano is DELICIOUS.
C.
Amazing bread, delicious pastry, wonderful coffee. Lovely looking interior too!
T.
Delicious food and coffee in a laid back, warm and welcoming atmosphere. Lovely friendly people, highly recommend!
D.
Delicious coffee and tons of baked goods. Pretty central on K'Rd. There are lots of coffee shops tucked away on this street, but I feel this is one of the best in the area.
H.
My favourite breakfast experience in Auckland. Scrambled eggs and coffee is perfection - simple things done right! It makes me happy when things are just so.
L.
Very nice cafe. They bake their own bread which you can see at the side of the cafe. Place is very clean and staff are helpful and happy to serve.
M.
Meal is great, roasted toast with fried eggs and latte.
r.
Good space, good food and lovely staff.
N.
Like everyone says here, nice food, special mention for definitely one of the best croissant in NZ BUT please be nice with your customers... Lady at the counter was not welcoming at all...
R.

What a great cozy cafe in St. Kevin's arcade. Brewing fantastic people's coffee with very tasty sandwiches and cabinet food. We'll be making Fort Greene a staple for breakfast.

(Translated) Excellent space with a well varied menu for the curious who are walking around the K road. Well, you can order breakfasts but also lunches and things to take away.
The entrance with the baker working the raw materials is very attractive. And also the fact that the tables are in the shape of a horseshoe.
Special mention for the staff. Super professional and attentive. Since I had a small health issue, and they could assist me instantly.
It is not cheap, but the price-quality ratio is very good.

(Translated) Away from the busy Karangahape Rd, Fort Greene offers a small selection of very delicious homemade bread. The best we have tasted during our visit to New Zealand where quality bakery is extremely rare. To visit absolutely.
