Reviews of The Engine Room
G.
Funny enough, I was thinking that this was going to be a fine dining restaurant and our friend joining us said it's more like a bistro, and sure enough, it's listed as a bistro on here In that respect, it gets a bit loud inside for sure, but it's very nice overall with a delectable menu and pleasant service that is good for couples to small groups. To name my favourites of the night, the rhubarb cocktail was surprisingly addicting, tagliatelle entree with truffle shavings was a great start, and the beef cheek special melted in your mouth whilst the venison was good to have once in a blue moon. The pear crumble dessert was a nice finish. However, now that I'm thinking about the menu, how people are supposed to read the chalk board menu when seated to the side or behind it?
H.
Very enjoyable dining experience! Great service, food was top notch and servings were generous. Highly recommended!

This was a special occasion visit and there was ten of us. Booking a table was easy enough, left a voice mail and got an email to confirm the details. If you are coming in group larger than eight people you will have to choose from 3 or 4 course set menu. Day before dinner they rang me to confirm (or change) reservation. The restaurant is nice with discrete lighting and staff is very friendly and very well looking after guests’ needs. Meal itself was very nice and even it may appear small portioned it is enough. For refreshments there is a selection of wine and beers including beer on tap. This was a very pleasant evening with great food. You probably won’t make this your regular Friday night place considering the prices but it is very good choice for special occasion dinner.

This is the best restaurant on the North Shore by a country mile, and one of the best in Auckland.
The food is bistro style and the menu almost never changes, with good reason - it's outrageously good. I've tried most of the mains but always come back to the confit duck, which is just so delicious.
The service is exceptional - the wait staff seem to remember us, no matter how long it's been since our last visit. The ambience is lovely .. though dark. If you like taking photos of your food, try a lunch service!
J.
Delicious dinner, attentive and professional staff. Enjoyed everything we tried, including the souffle, scallops, and steak. No room for dessert by the end!
G.
Very nice feel and buzz post lockdown.Food very good as usual and the staff are friendly, helpful and efficient.Definitely one of Aucklands best.
D.
The white bait omelet is to die for. Shame it’s seasonal.
Always good food and service.
Highly recommended
I.
Great service, excellent food. Spot on flavors and plating. No faults.
K.
Was really impressed with the service, the staff were very attentive and accommodating.
Nice, modern decor and good atmosphere. Have been a few times and it's consistently a good experience.
K.
Inviting venue with tasteful decor and warm, intimate lighting. The inventive menu is unpretentious and delicious. Food allergies are taken very seriously. As a celiac vegetarian, I had some appealing menu options and felt completely reassured my dietary requirements would be accommodated without it being a problem. I absolutely loved the zesty Thai tofu starter and falafel, eggplant and quinoa main dish. And you cannot leave without sampling the handmade chocolate truffles… to die for! Service is friendly, attentive and capable - they have a wonderful front of house team. Highly recommend this place - it’s going in my favourites list!
A.
If you want top notch you've found it. Amazing dishes with a wide selection. Octopus and chorizo salad was delicious and the Beef fell apart at the touch of a fork. Staff give you just the right level of attention and you'll want for nothing. Parking is an issue so allow time to find one and walk as the Bridgeway theatre is nearby and also popular.
B.
Great service and staff, the food was better than excellent, very highly recommended
J.
Solid across the board from deco, service, drinks and through the whole menu. We had the bluff oysters, chicken liver parfait, soufflé, duck confit and pavlova, and every dish was well done. Good cocktails and wine selection. I think the biggest strength of this restaurant is its consistency.
G.
I'm very happy with everything... great food and very friendly staff.
P.
Cannot fault the Engine Room on any count. The staff are very well trained and polite - your experience starts with the friendly welcome at the door and continues throughout the evening with 5 * service and food. Fabulous wine selection as well. I cannot go there without ordering the Goat Cheese Souffle! Absolutely, positively the best food, atmosphere and service!
E.
The food was really yum and have really nice customer service
A.
Very nice food, friendly and professional staff. I think they should have print out of their food menu as it is hard to read and order from the board
R.
Amazing service, particularly efficient and attentive. Food very good, although the menu choices felt a bit narrow. I had the deluxe version of the pork schnitzel, not entirely certain the upgrade was worthwhile. The dessert menu seemed a little better, not a huge range but broad appeal. We had a great meal, but it's not cheap.
J.
A perfectly pleasent meal with lovely service. However, we went for a special truffle dinner. The quality of the perigord truffle was so low as to make it flavourless. Also, the menu was incredibly similar to last year's. We won't be bothering to return
T.
Incredible food, top class service, great atmosphere. Four of us booked a table for a friend's birthday. We were there for 3 hours because we were enjoying ourselves so much! The food came out at just the right time, not too soon and not too late even though they were packed. All our meals (every course) came out at the same time and none of our hot meals were cold. I'd definitely be a regular here if I could afford it!
M.
Thoroughly recommend dining here. Had a work dinner recently with 13 guests and had the three course set menu. What an incredible evening. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was impeccable. Looking forward to dining here again soon. Must try the goat's cheese soufflé!
T.
A little hidden gem on the North Shore, Auckland. Everything was well presented and super fresh! Highly recommend!
G.
The food was amazing. The entrees outstanding, loved the pumpkin risotto and goat cheese souffle. Staff were outstanding and very knowledgeable guiding you through the menu and wine list. Best dining experience this year.
B.
Absolutely delicious and fantastic service!
L.
Overpriced and overrated. Entrees very good. Steak and venison chewy and tad overcooked. Doughnut churros??? Very slow service but staff very warm and friendly.
R.
Consistently great food, atmosphere and service.
J.
Top notch... could not fault the place... elegant venue, beautiful food and attentive staff...Highly recommend and can't wait to go back....
S.
The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, and the wait staff were welcoming and attentive. The entrees, steak and desserts were delicious. BUT the pork schnitzel was average, with entrees at $24 and mains at nearly $40 it is overpriced. We were only able to get through two courses before the table turned over and we had to move to the bar for dessert. We did not take a particularly long time to order and eat, so they either need to review their booking time slots, or serve the food faster. Having the menu only written on the wall in a hard to read script, with low ambient lighting is just silly. It resulted in me having to read the entire menu out loud, and us having to look up the dessert menu on our phones so we didn't have to walk across the room and peer over stranger's shoulders. Overall it was nice, but not worth the money.
J.
Just a great dining experience in a great part of Auckland. The starting platters are always amaizing we had the double baked goats cheese and the buffalo mozzarella, amazing stuff!
P.
Our family group of nine enjoyed the delicious dishes, beautifully presented by friendly professionals. We had a superb celebratory birthday evening and recommend this outstanding restaurant. What a fabulous experience. The food was outstanding - pasta special , venison and the most amazing desert - Cremino al cioccolato Super service friendly and attentive and the food was simply great Can’t recommend enough
T.
If you are looking for one of the best meals you have ever had, then I would totally recommend you pay this place a visit. We have been coming here for years and they never failed to disappoint. The cheese soufflé is the best I have ever had and the schnitzel is always a must go to for us. Service here is outstanding and this is one of my most absolute favourite places to dine.
K.
The cheese souffle was phenomenal. Had the special beef cheek and my wife had the veal snitchel. We were both very happy with our meals. I wasn't too sure I'd feel comfortable because I tend to go to fairly laid back less upmarket restaurants but the staff made us feel very welcome. A great evening. Thanks!
S.
Oh my that Goat's cheese soufflé....
Very good everything.
A must visit: slick service, thoughtful menu and wine list. Love it.
W.
Best food, service and wine. This place is my favorite and never disappoints. We have been going to the restaurant for what seems like decades. They have grown, remodeled and maintained that quality. The duck and the steak are my favorites. Though I do venture out and try new items. Everything has been great. I recently tried the Pork Schnitzel, Potato Rosti, Coleslaw, Caper Butter and loved it. My wife ventured out and tried the Beef Cheek, Parmesan Polenta, Chard, Mushrooms, Salsa Verde arms loved it as well. You can not go wrong with any item at the Engine Room.
K.
I do love the Engine Room and have been several times! Great service and the atmosphere is wonderful. There are always delicious specials to choose from and I quickly check to see if pannacotta is on the desert menu, it's what I call perfection! The perfect wobble :) On my last visit I ordered the steak and I don't think this was up to standard, maybe they need to look at their supplier, was quite thin and overcooked.
J.
Amazing wine list, though the red wines were all a bit warm. Some of the dishes were amazing and the atmosphere is lovely. Some reviewers have commented on the price. But it seems absolutely reasonable for this style of eating in Auckland.
n.
We came here for the first time since moving to the area and had high expectations! The waitress was nice but we did wait quite a while to be served. The menu is only on the blackboard, which was difficult to see and read. We ordered a mozzarella and prosciutto dish to start which was a little bland and simple for the price paid. Hapuka and lamb for mains - the Hapuka was nothing special, the lamb dish was delicious. Overall, nice food, location and ambience but very overpriced.
D.
Great location very good service great decor. Unfortunately the food is a let down. I only had a main course and a dessert. The menu is the usual things that you would find in a New Zealand restaurant with funky names to make it look original. Over cooked fish is never nice but it was also bland. My daughter's steak frites was nice she said. I had the pavlova for dessert my daughter the Pannacotta. Mine was very strange the meringue taste was like eating cardboard not the texture the taste. My daughters Pannacotta ... how can you make something so wrong the texture again was right but it should taste of pure freshness this was horrible.
M.
Very vegan friendly. They let me know exactly what I could have on the menu and which items they could customise for my requirements. And the food was so delicious! Definitely recommend the Thai tofu starter. It was so so yum
P.
Really good service. Everyone is friendly and professional. Good menu but it is expensive. Wine list is also good. The reason for the 4 stars is only because of menu cost. $40 for veal schnitzel is 'interesting'.
F.
What a pleasant place to take your special persons, atmosphere is inviting and staff are incredibly warm. Food is well balanced with classic flavours that have you contemplating seconds.
Thanks for making an anniversary special with the extra show of courtesy and acknowledgment. Highly recommend.
M.
The restaurant had a nice interior and good welcome. However my initial brief experience was undone, I felt insulated when I thanked the staff and exited to be asked have I paid for my tab. Especially given two of them were standing there an older lady and the young girl who greeted me earlier. Discretion firstly would be appreciated and secondly maybe taking the time to check the tab is cleared before interrogating the customer then double checking after I gave my answer. Given it was not peak time and restaurant was quiet it makes it even worse. A shame as the start of the experience was different. Manners and making the customer feel comfortable go along way and maybe even apologising when you have realised the customer has paid and your in the wrong. Anyway hopefully they learn to treat customers with more respect in future.
A.
It was our first time at this restaurant and we didn't have a reservation on Saturday night but the staff was wonderful - found us a table in a nice corner spot. The fish mains were incredible! So was accompanying sav blanc. Special thanks to Roxy for her friendly and intelligent service. She is beautiful. Homemade truffles were divine! Definitely wil be back.
А.
Nice food, attentive staff👍🏽
I would recommend to have an option of having a menu in tables as well - reading from the wall was not very comfortable.
G.
Another good night at the Engine Room. Menu still not much changed, but that is not a bad thing. Thai Tofu Salad for entree was excellent, and location is perfect for anniversary dinner
H.
Utterly delicious and comforting food; nice cosy atmosphere and lovely service. Just what we needed. Will be back for more!
S.
Exceptional ambience & service
Exquisite food
Explosions of delicate flavours
Perfectly cooked Venison
A.
Quality of the food has gone a bit downhill over the last few years, which is disappointing, however there are still a small selection of great food options; plus of course the staff are consistently wonderful and obliging to your every need.
C.
It's uncommon to find a good restaurant close to home. Highly recommded the Thai prawn salad. It just melts into your mouth. Service is excellent. If Peta Mathias is dining in then it must be good.
N.
Beautiful dinner here with a group of friends from work. The Steak Frites was amazing. Had the New York Cheesecake for dessert. Will definitely be back!
J.
Really nice food and hosts. Only downside would be the menus on the walls are hard to read
F.
Excellent service and great food. Expect to pay a bit more than your average local restaurant, but this isnt average and you won't be disappointed
H.
Beautiful service and dining. Food was lovely. I recommend the oysters, scallops, all of the first courses really and especially the duck.
C.
Great food. Excellent service. Nice ambience.
J.
Very good local bistro. Good service. Goats cheese souflee still amazing. Steak frites fairly ordinary - inexplicably lacked seasoning. Amazing dessert
C.
Been going there 14 years and the food is as good as it was when they opened the doors.
C.
Great service and great food. Would highly reccommend. Don’t be afraid that it’s over the bridge! Well worth the overseas experience (that’s only 10mins away)
R.
Outstanding restaurant. Very professional staff. Very good menu and a very good wine list. Highly recommended.
J.
Amazing experience. Food and wine was exceptional, but what made it really memorable was the lovely friendly staff.
M.
Nice spot but the food is nothing special considering the prices and other good spots in Auckland. Service was sluggish on a busy Saturday night.
J.
So happy to discover this fine dining close to home. Would recommend for special treat. Service great. Need to book.
D.
All of the food was cooked to perfection, the wait staff are excellent and polite however the food was stuck in the nineties, dated and boring.
W.
