Reviews of The Tannery
J.
This is called Mt Atkinson Coffee now. They sure know what they are doing, quite enjoyed my cappuccino. Nice decor and mech as well
D.
Nice place you would not think it is a cafe from the out side. I like the simple modern decor. They are a coffee roaster and ice cream maker. Mocha was okay, lunch they only served bagels from Best Ugly, which is yummy. Ice cream was good. Parking is limited as no on street parking. Staff did not look like they were enjoying the work, not that friendly, otherwise it would have been a five stars.
T.
This place is perfect for bringing kids for a Sunday brunch. The food is healthy and delicious and there's a fabulous play area for kids. Excellent coffee, and an old school New Zealand caravan kitted out as a playroom. Really good atmosphere and friendly service. Their ice cream is out of this world and they are very generous with it! We couldn't finish our two scoops..!
p.
This place has got a cool industrial look. An interesting nice place to have your weekend breakfast/brunch. They have a decent selection of bagels.
Food wise I rate them 3.5 I had ordered the New Yorker bagel with sesame bun. The bun was pretty good but it didn't come with any cream cheese! My husband ordered "whip-it" that also with no cream cheese :( bagel without cream cheese is no fun!
But I must admit once I made my peace with the absence of cream cheese, it wasn't all that bad.
The coffee & got chocolate is good, nothing extraordinary.
Would go back to try the other bagels.
K.
Beautiful trendy set up with viewing areas into the icecream making area, through window in kids caravan.
We came here for ice cream and was sadly a bit disappointed. The service was very average.
After standing looking at the icecream flavors for a bit no one greeted us... you are instructed with a note to buy it first at register then go pick your flavour. Ok fine. I ordered a kids single scoop and an adults double. The kiddy single scoop, it didn't even make it over the edge of the cone - ie you couldn't see it .. In my double, the 2nd scoop with a bit of encouragement to the server and mention that the scoops were a bit small, the top scoop looked a bit 'healthier' than my first which I felt was on the small side not much bigger than my childs 1 scoop. So as I handed my daughter hers, her face looked so sad - i couldn't, so I asked if they could put a little bit more on, and with consultation with the girl making coffee and or someone else... they very reluctantly agreed to put a shave more on. Had I of known, I may have ordered just the single scoop for her. The icecream looked a bit hard maybe and difficult to scoop, looked like it may have helped to dip the scoop in hot water between scoops? Taste was good however.
The flat white for my tasting was a bit burnt, some people strangely like it like this after living in Cambridge for a while and this appears to be the preferance? Ah well, I dont think the staff were in any mood to have me reappear now complaining about coffee and tbh I didnt want to deal with the nonchalant begrudgingness.
Chocolate and beetroot muffin came out.... it was really good, must have been the touch of butter added in the really neat paper twist. ;) butter is so good.
I eventually ordered the fluffy and I always appreciate when price is $1. $2 and over I think is far more than neccessary... cute choc marshmallow was well enjoyed.
Seemed like a lovely place to meet with friends, some were having business meetings it seemed with plugs for laproos and phones to charge while seated with them.
Really wanted to like this place more, but stingy icecream serving and attitude with me stating so just really tainted it.
EDIT: The owner has been in contact regarding this and has wonderfully offered his own service next time I come in to ensure a better experience here. I'll update later after I visit again.
EDIT 26.2.21 for visit on 20.2.21:
From the above review which I rated as a 2☆ I have finally returned and experienced what can be described as very satisfying beautiful large ice creams on a hot sunny day.
Lovely service from the girls, and who served me gave a free icecream for the disappointment of the previous experience.
2x adult ice creams and 2x single scoops for the children were ordered. So so good!!!
Highly recommend the Salted Caramel flavour, it's just every bit creamy and caramelly sweet like a good ice cream should be, and the Double Chocolate I think they call it. Almost like a rich chocolate mousse. Mouthwateringly good.
Thank you so much for this wonderful last minute experience. It was a real treat. All the best with the business in future.
*Pic numbers 7 on.
*Really sorry I cannot add further pics of the latest icecreams, the app keeps stopping and kicking me off.
B.
Very nice coffee here...probably one of the best ones I‘ve had in Auckland.
Spacious dining area with good natural lighting . The whole design and decoration has a bit artsy smell and relaxing at the same time.
M.
Hip place to have a nice morning coffee with bagels. Ordered the the works and its surprisingly filling, it could almost be big enough to share with another person.
D.
Had a nice coffee/hot chocolate here. Much better than the average fare and a lovely location to boot. Great vibe inside and excellent staff. Edit: had a bagel for the first time…oh my days it was exceptional! Do yourself a favour and try a bagel…lovingly crafted and delicious! Thanks to the amazing staff!
I.
GOOD coffee. Staff are on to it. A unique place in a semi industrial area of Newlynn.
There is a campervan inside that kids can investigate while you enjoy your beverage.
The layout is spacious and has wheelchair access to left of front door.
I was surprised how good The Tannery actually is. If you are like me and you enjoy visiting quaint little places for your coffee fix then I can recommend The Tannery.😘
N.
We had our first brunch there today as a birthday celebration and it was the perfect place and atmosphere for the occasion. Friendly staff, very cool decor and a real Westie feel in the design. We enjoyed the lattes, a New Yorker, brisket and salmon bagel with the works tots on the side. The tots are a great snack to share. My personal favourite was the New Yorker. Dessert was a nice vanilla ice cream and fejoa sorbet. Yes, we will come back for another special occasion.
D.
Great service and great location. Parking can be difficult. Good was great. Coffee also great.
W.
A good children’s section and kid friendly food options. Great selection of coffee as well, and an overall great vibe
A.
Perfect machiato! Funky venue with plenty of treats in the window. Friendly service and cheerful tunes too.
M.
Good selection of Kohu Road ice-cream and Mount Atkinson coffee.
S.
Been a regular for a decade, usually go with my son.
Today he had his usual BBQ Brisket, he was happy.
I had my usual, Grilled. So disappointed! Halloumi was rubbery, had barely touched the grill, the bagel was not toasted and was stodgy, and the onion jam poorly made, no balance.
Not impressed, ate a 1/4 and gave up.
At least the coffee is still good.
A.
Good place to come with kids. There is a small caravan that is repurposed to be kids play area.
Also bagels are really nice, esp house specials but $ 16 for one would be a bit pricey for me. Coffee costs are standard.
Parking can end up being an issue.
J.
Awesome spot with delicious food and scrummy drinks. Parking can be a bit tricky but it’s well worth a wee walk. Staff are always friendly.
L.
Tasty bagels and really good coffee. Beautiful setting too!
C.
First time customers. We loved the decor, but noticed immediately that there were a lot of dirty dishes both on empty tables and behind the counter despite the cafe not appearing too busy when we arrived. We were a party of 6, and sat the table with the chess board that was big enough to accommodate us. We moved the dirty dishes aside but the table itself was dirty. After waiting 5mins and noticed it wasn't going to cleared anytime soon, we moved to another table... the coffee was great, the potato tots were nice, but my sons bagel was so rock hard, he couldn't eat it and my daughters tuna melt begel wasn't toasted as requested and because it wasn't, it made for a very chewy meal. We will be back to give it another chance in future. It has alot of potential. Maybe our next visit will be worthy of that 5th star.
P.
Lovely yummy ice cream peanut butter bagels available here 😋 😋
m.
Went with a friend to get coffee from here. I ordered a soy chai latte and she ordered an iced latte with ice cream. Customer service is amazing and so is quality. We both loved our coffees and cannot recommend enough!
L.
So great to have this cafe just a short walk from where we live. The coffee is always perfect and the bagels delicious. If your tastebuds enjoy a good ice cream they won't be disappointed either. The caravan inside is a hit with little kids.
A.
Great upmarket warehouse-style café that serves yummy food and great coffee. Staff members are friendly, skilled, and professional. Also serves yummy ice creams. The outdoor seats are great during summer, though the indoor ones are also nice. Finding a parking can be a challenge especially on weekends and busy times.
J.
Love the open space and rustic feel of the place. Coffee was great and a good roast. Food menu is small but well done in its specialized bagel/slices genre. Staff were pleasant. Bonus points for the cute terrariums merchandise display and children play trailer.
S.
Our kids love coming here! They call it "The Caravan Coffee Shop!"
bagels are good value, coffee is awesome, nice atmosphere, kid friendly, sometimes parking is a little tight, but other than that its great!
M.
Was a nice experience and something different than eating the usual breakfast on a weekend. The variety of bagels was just amazing. And Yes they do have Zomato Gold. Could have been a 5 start if the cutlery would be washed and athe service would be a bit friendlier.
A.
Such an excellent cafe! We are from Melbourne and we were travelling out to the beaches on the west coast from Auckland airport, and stopped in. Coffee was excellent, and the food was even better! We recommend giving the bagels a try.
G.
Best cafe in West Auckland! Super incredible coffee (their long blacks are rich and full of flavor), and delicious sweet treats in their cabinet. They also offer savory baking and bagels and of course the Kohu Road Ice Cream parlor is right there too! It's always an interesting place to be as it's got a chilled vibe but you can also watch the roasting team hard at work behind the glass window! The only downside is parking!
T.
The best place for the salmon bagel in Auckland. I've been here now thirteen times and every time is spot on with the coffee, the customer service and the food. I'm not a big fan of the area but the Tannery really brings a little gem to an industrial zone. Get the King. DO IT.
P.
The café has a good feel to it, the service was quick and efficient.
The coffee ok but not hot only warm which was disappointing as I'd heard good things about it. The bagel was good with generous sides of cream cheese and ham.
A major deficit is that there is only one bathroom which for the size of the place would be a pain, especially at busy time or with children.
Overall there are strong good points but then there are some equally strong negatives. Based on this I wouldnt be rushing back.
S.
This is one of my favourite cafe's in West Auckland. While parking is difficult, once you are inside you do not regret spending a few minutes trying to park. The ambience is very relaxed and casual. Despite this, the food is excellent and fairly priced.
Á.
Just had an awesome babyshower at the Tannery! The kids were having great fun in the caravan, while the mummas could enjoy great coffee, bagels and some fun. Thanks guys for the easygoing and kind service!
S.
Top blokes, I mucked up my Bagel order (didn't realise it had pepperoni) and ordered a new one. Staff insisted it was on the house, even though I admitted my mistaken. Awesome coffee, excellent bagel and top marks for customer service.
l.
If you value your hearing get this great coffee as take away. So many hard surfaces combined with at least a dozen joyful playing toddlers at any given time on Sat. or Sun. is an assault on the ears. Weekdays are better but the place needs some decor to absorb sound.
D.
Bagels and icecream not a common combination but this place makes it work. The bagel options are tasty and the icecream options are extensive. Quick service and pleasant staff make a visit easy. This place is also child friendly providing a large caravan for children to play in.
A.
We love this cafe and come alone for working on the laptop, with a friend, or to meet with the whole family. Coffee is top notch and better than my other favorite cafes, bagels are always impressive, ambience and service are perfect, and we love their dedication to the West and to the Village Project.
A.
Great place to eat, excellent coffee and great food. Amazing selection of icecream! Has a creche for children which is lovely and unusual. Great service, very friendly staff. Lots of room for groups, good atmosphere!
B.
The tannery is a gem of the New Lynn/Avondale neighbourhood. Serving delicious bagels and one of the best flat white ice creams in Auckland (Kohu road).
The decor is simply beautiful and is a perfect place for a nice weekend catchup 😍
H.
Yum coffee, yum bagels yum cold pressed juices. And they have pancakes, slices, muffins and did I mention coffee?
Ice cream on cones are also available. Got seating, lots of distractions for kids.
Just a plain old nice place to chill out
h.
Friendly service and nice display, bagels are perfect matched with topping, ice coffee was generous with a big ball of ice cream! a bit pricy tho, but the kids play area is one of the biggest in Akl cafes :)
H.
Get the ice cream here! It is made in house and they even use local fruits! The feijoa is amazing when it is in season! They make both sorbets and ice cream. The parking here is easy. The workers here are super nice and they will go above and beyond to help you out. Movenpick does not hold a candle to Tannery definitely make a stopover to this place when you are in Auckland.
g.
Good coffee. Spacious environment. Hot in Summer, and tendency to play music too loud. Food is ok but choice limited if you don't like bagels. Overall... its OK.
B.
Excellent cafe. Great coffee roasted by Mt Atkinson [next door] nice vibe, cool art on walls and excellent service!
Nice one guys
L.
I love the bagels. Coffee is a bit strong for me, however my son loves it just like that. It is always busy as. I wish parking was easier however that is area for you.
J.
The menu is pretty limited: bagels, ice cream, and coffee. But that's a perfect weekend lunch, and all three are top notch. Plus, the campervan play area is the best distraction for little kids that we've found.
D.
THIS is my default when Sweatpants And Coffee requires a rest from existence. Warning though, there is only one person that makes the best coffee in this joint. And he’s never there when I need him to be. Maah!😫
The bagels are damn good and the cabinet food is sufficient. You could really just make it yourself but the element here is to buy and experience. Just wish there were more cinnamon brioches on offer. But the ice cream...... oh the ice cream. You just gotta try. And yes do be warned, wherever there is ice cream, there are kids, mummies groups and families galore.
I too feel the nostalgia for this place as I remember picking up a family member on the eve of his shift. It has certainly been awesome seeing this place journey throughout the decades from Astley’s Tannery .. Kohu Road and finally to The Tannery.
M.
Great coffee and service.
Also if you buy a bag of perfectly roasted on-site coffee beans they'll grind it for you to your specifications and give you a free coffee to boot.
X.
The staff are good, menu is good bistro but coffee is the week point 7/10. Neither hot enough, despite we were 3 of 6 patrons, and depth of flavor was disappointing.
T.
Fantastic coffee and excellent service. One of my favourite cafes in the area, also love the chess board!
E.
The Tannery is a Flagship cafe for Mt Atkinson coffee and Kohu Road Ice cream
R.
I head into this cafe most weeks. Along with the friendly staff, the coffee, teas and juices are good. It has a casual relaxed atmosphere where you can sit and catch up with friends.
D.
Awesome place! Great coffee, delicious bagels, and the environment is comfortable. Will certainly be coming back when I’m out this way again...
S.
The food was delicious, stunning set up. I loved the caravan kids idea. Service and staff 100% great service and professional. Didnt have to wait long for meals. It was Awesome 😀😀
D.
Bagels and coffee. So so good. High ceiling and plenty of room. Simplicity at its best. Best tasting coffee I reckon. Give them a visit. Must go if you in the area. Thanks tannery.
P.
Love this place great coffee and food. In an old warehouse
S.
Great coffee, great bagels and excellent ice cream! Rustic setting and basic food options. Busy little local.
M.
Nice coffee shop, good coffee and eatry with coffee beans for sale
J.
Easily one of the best cafes in West Auckland. Brilliantly crafted coffee, creative bagels, and run by locals who have a true passion for community.
F.
Nice space and good service. But coffee did not meet the expectations.
Flat white was overextracted and far from pleasant.
Picollo was little better (quite some inconsistency in the pull here) - but more like kiwi size of picollo (tulip that i would expect flat white in).
Salty caramel doughnut was the best part of the coffee experience.
J.
Love the food and the ice cream, but pity the parking is so limited and you close the kitchen so early, not really lunch friendly.
T.
Great conversion of an old tannery. Showing my age as I remember going for a job there in a "previous life" when it was still a tannery! Had a coconut milk flat white. That's what old people with lactose intollerance do these days. Two in fact and so good I really didn't care about the public holiday surcharge!
M.
Best coffee in New Lynn
B.
Top spot in New Lynn. Whats not to love about a coffee roastery married to Kohu Rd icecreamery with great food and a vintage caravan playground for kids.
J.
LOVE! This cafe is legit. The coffee is always made to perfection. Family friendly environment and lovely staff.
J.
Limited food range because they specialise in bagels and the fillings are a bit measly. So not really value for money. Very good ice cream.
C.
Excellent cafe. Friendly staff, delicious food and lovely coffee. Big and airy with a cool kids area. Love this place.
D.
Great coffee, friendly staff and yum bagels.
Had the BBQ brisket bagel, really tasty and good size.
D.
Coffee is great and the bagels we had were good too. Only downside is the lack of parking in the area because it is always so busy.
A.
Great coffee, food and ice-cream. Caravan for the kids to play in. One of the best coffee places in West Auckland!
T.
Amazing iced chocolate. They also sell raw or roasted beans for making your own coffee.
S.
The team here was super accommodating and made the awesome atmosphere even better. Can't wait to return (the tatertots are calling my name), and I'd wholeheartedly reccomend the smoothies!
E.
Went here for a takeaway coffee on a Sunday morning at level 2 lockdown and it was great vibes.
H.
Really spacious and a rustic feel. Great coffee & ice cream. Definately worth a look for lunch :)
J.
Fab coffee and tasty food. Great ambience. Parking not great. Had to park and walk a fair way as restricted parks near by.
D.
