So worthwhile to drive up to Astro cafe from Te anau lake. Amazing coffee and light meals. Plenty of seating inside and out. Incredible views from on top of mountain. $8 fee per car to enter observatory grounds.

Beautiful view from the cafe although the drive up is very very steep. You will need to pay an entrance fee of $8 to enter the road leading up to the cafe! We didn't expect the road to be so steep and our motorhome almost failed on us (had to go real slow on gear 2). However it was all worth it and was in fact the steepest drive we had in all of South island!

This is the must visit place in Lake Tekapo. Arguably the best view in the whole world for Lake Tekapo. The cafe offers some amazing dishes and hot drinks. The entry to this privately owned property (By University of Canterbury) is 8 dollars for a each car. But it is definitely worth.

Lovely and beautiful located cafe on Mt. John. While enjoying the best cafe and cakes, you can enjoy the magnificent scene of lake Tekapo from up there ( about 1.000 mtrs above sea level). It can ve reached either from the lake Tekapo about 45 minutes walk or by car. Perfect location for a cafe! I'm pretty sure at night when the sky is clear, you also can view the stars. I tried the latte, carrot cake and cheese scones and they all are superb! Seats are plenty available outside. Many tourists are coming here either to take pictures or just to hang out there. Toilets are available too. I must say I fall in love with this cafe. When I have a chance to visit lake Tekapo again, I definitely must come to this cafe.

Good coffee with an even better view! Order the saturn cappuccino if you’re a coffee lover. It’s worth waiting for a table outside. Note: you have to wait $8 to enter the road that the cafe is located on. It’s definitely the best view of Lake Tekapo though, so would recommend.

If you are at Lake Tekapo, then the Astro Café is a must. There is a small charge on the drive up to café. The Café was extremely busy when were there. They did some excellent snacks and coffee. Also able to buy cards and special Astro Café postage stamps. The reason to go there is the magnificent views of Lake Tekapo, the mountains and plains. You can also see Mount Cook from there. Go up on a clear day, which we were lucky to have.

A must go cafe if you are traveling to Tekapo (from Christchurch to Queenstown). Located on the windy hill top with the most spectacular views of mountains in Newzealand. Please note you have to pay $8 to enter on the road as its a separate road which is not far from the highway. Just 5 minutes off the way but it's worth coming here.

The view from here is great. On a sunny day, it's a joy to just stop doing anything and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea at the cafe. Pricing here is quite reasonable even there's a premium to the location. Washroom is limited and expect a queue on a busy day. If you are driving up to the cafe there's a NZD8 dollar toll cause this is a private property

Most people would come here for the amazing view of Lake Tekapo which I have to agree. The views alone is worth the $8 car coupon of sorts that you (may) choose to pay later on in the cafe The black coffee / Americano was good and I was a little pleasantly surprised that they gave me two paper cups stacked on each other because the water was extremely hot. All about the details. The drive up is a little tricky and winding so stay safe and watch for the weather!

Tasty food from a limited menu. Loved the attention to detail when I found Saturn floating on my coffee! Great views and having done the star gazing there the night before it was great to see the observatory and view in daylight. A must if you're near Lake Tekapo.

The view is great. The coffee is good if you don’t mind waiting half an hour minimum as the place is quite busy. The food options are abysmal. I do not think previous reviewers who mentioned this actually looked at the options. Despite having a full kitchen they offer a limited selection of soggy sandwiches and very few pies. The cake selection looks good. There are no breakfast options, not even toast.

Easily the view is great and it is nice having a place where to rest eating something after a short walk, but overall nothing of special as bar. There is some cute attempt of customizing the bar with Astro theme, some food is ok, but it's just a classic kiwi bar in the end.

Great spot for morning or afternoon tea. You may have to wait at the bottom of access road where $8 toll booth is until car park becomes free at the top. Try to avoid peak lunch time, we had to wait for 15 mins to be allowed to drive up. Check out opening status during out of summer season. I will walk up to the summit next time, seems better option than drive.

As many have already said here the views are stunning. Coffee is great, food is okay but the situation with the bathroom is ridiculous. People spend 10-20 minutes to queue and use one single cabin available in the bathroom facility that stinks for miles. Very annoying and disrespectful to the clients. Hopefully it is going to be fixed soon. Wish I could spend more time admiring the mountains and less queueing to use the toilet :/

The place is awesome, coffee is great. You have an espectacular view of all lake Tekapo and surrounding, incredibly beautiful. We order a cappuccino and a Chai latte and were delicious but we order also a coconut crumble square and we got a triangle, so probably dessert portions are smaller than you would think according what you see exhibit. On the other hand, is January and is special to be outside and enjoy the view and the breeze but there is nothing to give you a shadow and sun is too hard here. Coffee has a glass ceiling, probably in winter is ideal to catch all the warm from the sun but in summer is a little suffocating. So, summing it up, place and coffee definitely great but need something to shade outside and show the real portion of what you are going to get.

Astro Cafe located in the Observatory premises above Lake Tekapo is the ideal spot to stop for a refreshing snack. The pristine waters of the Lake Tekapo on a lovely day are a treat to watch from the top most point in the area. There is outdoor seating available which is for the brave as it could be tad too sunny/windy at times. The food options range from Sandwiches to Coffees, which are really delicious, considering the location from where these guys operate. No wonder, Lonely Planet says that this is among the Best Cafes in the World. Don't miss this place!

We climbed Mt. Jhon on June 11th. On the way to to the top of the mountain, the scenery was just spectacular and beautiful!!! We really enjoyed but everything totally changed when we reached the top of the Mt.Jhon. Wind and hail was so strong that we could not move and breath well. We run away for our life. To escape from bad weather conditions, we tried to enter the Astro cafe. To make matters worse, they closed. we don't know the reason. Additionally, all restrooms were closed. To someone who are thinking to climb Mt.Jhon, I recommend to go there, of cource. But please prepare well to climb and pay attention to the weather!!
