Reviews of Bunsen
S.
Ordered the big breakfast,, it was good except no bacon, thought they'd made a mistake,, no, bacon is a side, you have to order separate,, that caught me out as nowhere else is bacon a side on a big breakfast,, so heads up guys,, there is no bacon in their big breakfast
J.
Very Good Brunch and Coffee. Menu has changed tho.
J.
Great cafe with a lot of seats. Nice and warm inside when it's a bit cold out.
Staff are friendly, food is good. Looks nice but isn't too over the top either.
K.
I like to sit outside and watch the scenery and eat lunch. The consumption here is not expensive, but the environment is very good. Delicious food and excellent coffee!
G.
Great breakfast of B&Eggs, coffee was strong and hot...even the toast wasn't burnt & hard as so often happens at cafes. Always relaxing. Good job team👍
J.
Nice place to eat. The food was good slightly pricy but definitely more expensive places around chch. All stuff but one were very friendly. Would have been a 5 star but unfortunately one of your staff members was rude and she wore her mask on her chin the whole time we were there. She also sneezed when making the coffee without covering her face and of course, she wasn't wearing her mask. Because of this I will not be going back and wouldn't recommend.
J.
I really like Bunsen. It's such a cool space. The staff and service are good. If you go after about 1pm, they tend to have only a few food options left.
S.
Of course the setting is wonderful and it’s great they allow dogs. I just wish they could get their coffee right. It was watery and tasteless, we had to send it back twice and then gave up.
D.
Beautifully cooked eggs, lovely tuna sandwich. Very accommodating with gluten-free requirements. Very good service on Sat 16/10 1:30pm.
S.
Bunsen have the most lovely staff. They're very accommodating to both people and puppies. I forgot to say I was gf and df and they very kindly adjusted my meal to fit my requirements even once it had been prepared. Their food is really yum and it's a stunning spot in the art centre heritage building.
A.
Great place and the food was awesome. Worth it
K.
Actually really loved this cafe. The food was amazing and the coffee good as well. Very popular little place with options to dine outside, inside or upstairs
H.
Good stop to have a coffee, and refill if you are hungry. I recommend to have a look the menu, instead of order the quick option in the fridge. If the weather is nice, outside sitting is really nice.
B.
Fantastic science themed restaraunt for quality food and great restoration of the Victorian architecture of the former University of Canterbury. The food was delicious and perfectly cooked and the staff were lovely! The only issue is the considerably slow service and efficiency of the staff. We had to wait a long time for the food and there was no staff memeber to greet us upon arrival. However, this should improve as they iron out the initial issues :)
R.
Great place. Excellent food. Had lunch with my wife. And the old building is a real treasure.
L.
First time went here it was a beautiful day and got to have coffee and beers + delicious vegetarian nachos which I enjoyed. Generous portion of fries too. Outdoor area lovely! The second time I had the mushrooms with truffle oil - the creamy sauce was overwhelming couldn’t taste anything but the truffle oil. The upstairs area is stuffy and the wait staff have real trouble getting up the stairs. Would go again, but won’t be rushing back for the mushrooms.
Y.
Must go for breakkie, this is where the local meets and with all the handsome dogs too. I have spotted 5 dogs in a setting! You hear piano play from the music school on the background from time to time as well. Good food at last.
M.
Bunsen has a great looking menu however I decided to eat from the cabinet as the quiché was speaking to me. Whilst it wasn’t overly filling it was still tasty and had a nice wee side salad. The orange juice I had with it was also very fresh and tasted home made. Looked like a popular place to go for a morning coffee
R.
Great outdoor seating with umbrellas to enjoy the sunshine, and not get cooked. Menu had something for every one and was well prepared. Very dog friendly too!
J.
Delicious iced tea, nice cold brew coffee and the caramel slice was basically ideal. The biggest draw by far though is the beautiful building its in and the huge amount of indoor space upstairs.
Edit: have been trying out the meals lately and I'm a little annoyed with some aspects. Was planning on trying the big breakfast today, but as I can not stand mushrooms I asked if it would be possible to swap them out for something, and while I was told that I could, I would be expected to pay full side menu price for whatever I swapped it out for which would add around 5$ onto the cost of the meal. Thats a bit cheeky, and not something that seems at all reasonable considering the mushrooms themselves are 4.50 on the sides menu. Makes me a lot less keen to come back for meals. Maybe just drinks from now on.
Had the chicken nachos instead, not a fan no flavour except tomato, largely unseadoned, even plain cornchips and what looks like the shaken out end of a bag at that. The chips and the burger are quite nice, but other than that I'd say probably better to consider the place a nice cafe with good drinks and steer clear of the meals which seem a bit disappointing especially at around 20-25 dollars per plate.
m.
A great spot for a coffee and a snack (or a breakfast or lunch). Well-fueled, enjoy exploring the wonderful Arts Centre!
D.
A good option for quality coffee and snacks next to the museum. Can get quite busy, especially on weekend mornings. Coffee is good, but you can wait a while if they are busy. So probably not the best choice of you are in a hurry. But if you've got time to sit, relax, and take in the developing surrounds of the area, is a great place to be.
A.
Really cool cafe located in one of the old Victorian buildings. The atmosphere is nice and casual and the service was fast and friendly. Cabinet food looks and tastes delicious.
K.
The best place for brunch in Christchurch! The food is really fresh and small touches, such as the homemade pesto with the full cooked breakfast, make it stand out! Plus the decor is so quirky and interesting!
K.
The atmosphere was okay and nice old building, but I couldn't eat the scone as it was too dry and floury.
S.
Still a great location, coffee was good, but lacked a bit of the magic of le cafe in its hey day for food selections
B.
Food was great. Lady taking the money was very sharp and abrupt. Got the feeling I was not welcome. Otherwise all good
M.
Coffee was good, the large cup isn't what you would usually expect in Chch but hey atlease it was a good coffee and great service
C.
A good cafe to have breakfast at, the decorations were a bit odd but interesting.
R.
Great food, great coffee, close to the museum perfect finish to the trip.
P.
Staff professional, could do with the odd smile while serving, relax more, food and drink Server promptly
H.
The menu has changed, not what it says on the website. Nice spot for coffee or a light lunch.
A.
Phenomenal food, friendly staff and would definitely worth every dollar. The Buxem breakfast is the best!
I.
Great range of foods and plenty for vegans and vegetarians. Gets very busy and so it can get pretty noisy but on a cold day it's a great, cosy haunt. On a fine day there's plenty of outdoor seating to relieve the crush inside. Service was pretty good considering the crush at the time.
M.
Good spot, especially in the courtyard. Lots of history in the building.
Coffee is good, so as the carrot cake
W.
Really nice surprise when stepping into this café and outdoor tables. Definitely coffee with a view :)
D.
Went there on Mothers day was as expected packed with long line to be served.
Staff even though were flat out were friendly and efficient was looking forward to the scones but all gone.
Allows dogs outside has plenty of seating inside and out.
Even though they were busy our coffee arrived in no time with a friendly smile and the food was very fresh.
Will be back
F.
Such a cool building but the menu, price, vibe and wait time for coffee lets it down. Needs an injection of something
S.
Great café, very good food and coffee , nice place to relax
R.
Cute place for a coffee + sit down. Right opposite from the botanic garden and the museum. Loved coming here while in Christchurch
K.
Great service, cute decor, tasty food, good coffee!
M.
One of my favourite cafes in Christchurch! A 2-storey cosy place with great atmosphere and magazines to read. Outside cosy terrace too. Very friendly staff who remember how I like my coffee, kudos to them 😀👍 The choice of food is great, also for vegans/vegetarians. I love this hotpot for example. And they also serve yum salads, pies and frittatas. If you like it sweet, there's heaps of choice too. Check it out yourself and be pleasantly surprised by this great price-quality place.
A.
Coffee fabulous, can take our dog outside. Good food.
S.
Fantastic coffee place in the arts centre of Christchurch. Good food, great service and lovely location
S.
Beautiful heritage building, fantastic service, all tied in with a chemistry lab theme. Excellent place to be in on a rainy day surrounded by artsy shops and also near the Art Gallery.
A.
Loved the veggie nachos! Friendly team and cozy space
s.
What a lovely place to stop and have a nice hot beverage or a snack we went out of our way to find this place and we were not disappointed sat outside and a lovely friendly atmosphere two lovely hot drinks served to us and a nice hot meal I could highly recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a meal or a quick snack with a great atmosphere and great staff
P.
Great coffee and great food with heritage architectural building in CBD with a lot around to offer, one of the best place to enjoy lazy weekends
T.
Really cute science themed café with a variety of food both on the menu and in the cabinet. Lots of seating and has a nice upstairs mezzanine floor. The stairs are super narrow though! Would come again 😊
E.
Great food, atmosphere, drinks. 10/10
v.
Lovely food, nice clean place. Nice.
M.
Bunsen is conveniently placed off Worcester Street 75 m North of the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities in the Arts centre. They have a homely atmosphere with ply tables decorated with mathematical and chemical formulae including caffeine. Breakfast bunch burgers form the menu. Great coffee and a choice of quality wines always available. Kids are catered for with a minimum of fuss.
S.
Love atmosphere, food and have been 2x recently. Recommend you book a table, it gets very busy over lunch time
K.
Lovely friendly staff. Great place to take your dog after a walk at hagley.
N.
Quirky Cafe with an 'experiment' theme. Good service, yummy food, outside is very dog friendly, great location!
h.
The coffee was great but menu food portions are very small in comparison to other similar cafes. $24 for 8 button mushrooms, 2 pieces haloumi and 1.5 slices of supermarket style toast. Stick to the coffee and one their great slices from the cabinet.
L.
Lovely atmosphere and good service.
K.
Beautiful food and coffee relaxed atmosphere
G.
Absolutely brilliant place to have breakfast lunch or brunch!! Staff, location and food are amazing.
B.
Great cheese scones! Good service by friendly staff. Loved the coffee!
A.
Great little cafe with a vast cabinet of food and a set menu until 2.30pm.
Coffee with flavouring was a little on the sickly side and only just bareable.
Mushroom dish was nice, however I would recommend making improvements to the sauce as it was too overpowering, other than that would recommend!
H.
Super coffee and a large comfy couch for weary footsoldiers. Architectural setting - Gothic revival from the 19th century - made from an interesting vibe.
A.
Nice little cafe situated in a beautiful building. The decor is nice and I really wanted to like this place, but I cannot give it more that 3 starts as the drinks were excessively sweet (we had a chai latte and a hot chocolate) and the french toast was not great (terrible cream or butter, whatever it was). I think it's the first time my boyfriend did not finish his sweet breakfast favorite.
A.
Wonderful service - great staff.
H.
Beautiful interior, in a historic setting, good food and coffee, classy atmosphere
J.
Great coffee! Good scrambled eggs, could do with a bit of rosemary or thyme!
P.
Fabulous food, perfect coffee and warm professional staff. Dog friendly. It's a winner very time.
I.
Our local. Super friendly, great coffee
L.
High quality food and coffee, fantastic historical setting
P.
Unfortunately underwhelming... has the place and potential to be awesome
K.
Great ambience and layout all year round. Yummy food and coffee, one of my fave wee cafes.
K.
Wonderful cafe. Best french toast I've ever had. Perfectly executed and flavour combination was on point! We found it hard finding good places to eat being from out of town, very pleased we stopped here!
S.
Good food and a fantastic service. We dud not have to wait long for our order. Very efficient
A.
A few days ago I went to a different coffee shop in a mall and paid a fortune for 1 coffee.
I was very happy today to pay almost the same today for a great coffee, lovely gluten free cake, friendly service and an awesome atmosphere in this historic environment. I'm also aware that the good people running this place support broken people and are environmentally friendly focussed.
You have a 5 star review and a loyal customer x
L.
What a cool place, so full of history and atmosphere, foods pretty good too
N.
Really great vibe inside and out. Very nice cabinet food. I got an iced Americano, which isn't exactly like iced coffee back home but it is as close as you'll get here (unless you go to Starbucks.) I'll definitely be checking this spot out again soon!
E.
Love the historical setting in the arts centre. Great range of delicious food. Seating downstairs/upstairs and outside. Great customer service.
I.
A favourite! If you are looking for an excellent cup of coffee, a delicious slice of carrot cake, or a full fledged lunch/breakfast, please check out Bunsen! Located in the old Arts Centre, they have a truly unique atmosphere. It's plain fun to just look around the place studying all the different sciencey equipment making up the interior. The staff are very friendly, and the food is very yummy. Couldn't recommend more!
S.
A good cafe, although it can get a little crowded at times. Steep stairs to the first floor, but that's because that's the way it is for this old building. Good food and coffee
P.
Great location and friendly staff. I ordered the fish and chips which came in a bowl making it difficult to cut into without chips sliding over the side. The fish itself was small and overcooked and the chips, although they were cooked very well, were too salty.
K.
Brilliant place. Great food. Amazing staff
B.
Great coffee. They forgot one of our orders but were very apologetic. They made it super quickly and offered it for free. Great service. Ended up having eeven more coffee !
N.
Still great food and coffee but unfortunately the service sucks
N.
Such a cool aesthetically pleasing cafe. Great food and coffee. Sometimes it gets quite busy and there is a long wait on food but totally worth it
C.
Gorgeous historical setting nestled in the old chemistry block of the Christchurch Arts centre. Bunsen has grear coffee, cabinet food and menu for something a bit larger. A great place to sit and chat with friends. Service is not speedy so allow time to take in the atmosphere. Well set up outdoor area for dogs and is child friendly.
P.
It's another spot I come back to regularly. Echoing Le Cafe from before the quakes, Bunsen has made good use of available space in a familiar location and carried their theme decor well to reflect the original use of the space for the Chemistry Dept of the University of Canterbury. The coffee is great and the selection of counter food at least covers most bases. The staff are welcoming and professional and the experience is consistently good while the Arts Centre locale puts customers in the heart of the museum/gardens area as well as offering access to galleries and shopping next door. Come on down!
D.
Hands down the best filter coffee in Christchurch. A range of filter methods including the syphon. Lovely setting in the old historic arts centre buildings with ample seating inside and a sun drenched outside courtyard. Friendly staff. Highly recommended for the coffee aficionado
A.
The food from the cabinet was nice and good coffee. However we just wanted to get a bowl of hot chips for the kids and there was a 25 minute wait for any food other than sweets from the cabinet (including pre made stuff that just needed heating) so it limited our choices quite a lot.
C.
Adorable cafe bustled in the Arts Centre. Delicious coffee and tasty treats. There is seating at the ground floor and upper level. This is a great place for meeting with friends or reading a book alone.
R.
Good selection of gluten free. Great food and coffee with efficient friendly service
A.
nice staff and place but really unimpressed by the chicken nachos. no actual mexican flavour. main taste is of canned tomato. chicken squares not great - expect pulled chicken with nachos. coriander was only good flavor. my friend said his burger was ok.
S.
Perfect setting for brunch on a winters day. Best brunch I’ve had in a while, freshly cooked, perfect mix of flavours and portion was spot on! Coffee was great to boot!
P.
I can not thank the staff at Bunsen's enough when we visited at Christmas. One of the waitresses showed a degree of kindness that truly staggered us. Something we will never ever forget. Oh and the food was good too
I.
Such a great place. Hamburgers were delicious, pulled pork eggs benedict spot on.
Kids platter was OK, but fairly priced.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
We would return.
S.
Person taking my order at the counter couldn't have looked less enthused to be there. But the rest of the team were nice. Food was OK.
M.
Very cool location, with lots of different spaces and levels. An excellent coffee was had! Seemed child friendly to with a couple of high chairs which is a bonus!
M.
Been here several times. Consistent quality in food and drink. Great dining either inside or out. Really like the atmosphere, definitely recommend, especially for brunch!
L.
Very pleasant venue, unique theme. Food is great, portion sizes are perfect. Good value.
D.
It's always lovely to meet at Bunsen for a coffee or a meal at Bunsen on a sunny day.
The coffee has always been perfectly made the numourus times I had a coffee there. The friendly staff are happy to advise on what food is or can be made vegan.
The location is also perfect if you want to enjoy your meal leisurly and watch passerbys outside or if you need to talk business in a quieter environment upstairs.
The quirkyness of the place adds a feature that also allows you to form special memories and seems to be a destination of choice for many tourists.
M.
Nice food, great environment and splendid service.....what more can you want !!!
E.
Excellent wine choice. The Wooing Tree Rose was divine. To change it because it's not well kmown is not educating your customers! I love trying wines you can't buy at the supermarket. 😊
C.
Loved it. Friendly staff. Forgot to make my coffee (they were super busy) and when i reminded them I had my coffee in minutes. Its relaxing and really cool things in the place to look at.
S.
Nice quant cafe, straight out of Harry Potter, friendly staff and friendly sparrows looking for a piece of the action
C.
This place is amazing. Friendly staff, dog friendly (omg so many doggos!) and incredible coffee. Order the Bongo for the best coffee experience (and don't look it up until you try it).
J.
Very close to the i-Site. Serves decent breakfasts. Free feijoa when we visited.
n.
Food was so creative and tasty. Was cooked really fast. Was hot and nice and fresh. Definitely a great spring lunch location
E.
Amazing food, brilliant coffee, fabulous staff, fantastic location. What more do you need? Also, very dog friendly!
C.
Came across this nice little spot after a trip to Christchurch. Nice setting, nice food and great coffee. Service was spot on. Would definitely be back again when I return.
S.
Set in the old Christchurch Univeristy grounds (now Arts Centre) this cafe restaurant is unique, with themed layout and really good quality food. Not too expensive, outdoor seating and a stepping off point to explore the Arts Centre, now being rebuilt after the shakes.
S.
Awesome place to start your weekend. Good coffee and food. Recommend visiting if you haven't already been.
A.
Great atmosphere, great coffee. Will be back for breakfast & more...

N.
Really cool coffee shop in a historical building. The coffee is great too.
S.
Great range of food, friendly staff, nice setting
T.
Good coffee. Note that it closes at 3pm and if you go after 1.30 not too many choices on what to eat.
D.
Great tasting coffee, a little cool though (I have worked as a barista, I should know). Great service, and friendly for dogs
A.

A.
Nice food
J.
Great atmosphere. Nice idea for breakfast (Smash It) but it was cold and too sweet for an egg and avocado dish.
s.
Lovely feel but food a bit of a let down. Toasted salmon bagel tough & dry. Side salad needed mayo on the side.
P.
Clever fitout, friendly service, slightly burnt coffee. Make sure you squeeze upstairs.
A.
Great atmosphere, good food!
F.
Nice setting & friendly service but food, I ordered the Smash & it was not hot & bread was chewy like it was 2 days old & overkill on the sprouts which was supposed to be a garnish😣
M.
