Reviews of Mia Flora Cafe & Garden Centre (Kavanagh House)
I. W.
Absolutely brilliant! 6 of us arrived at a full house just for coffee. No problem! We were given a table upstairs and the service was superb. Beautiful place and gorgeous looking cakes. Will be back for a meal.
A. W.
What beautiful surroundings, was our 1st time there on Sunday 6th Feb.
I had the mouth watering Pancakes & my partner had the Chicken Fettuccine, both were very tasty. Kavanagh house is stunning, so much to look at.
Lots of great giftware & variety in the Garden shop along with an array of outdoor plant choices, very knowledgeable green fingers guy to chat too! We will be back ♡
C. B.
Always love stopping in here. Great atmosphere and you get the whole package ie food, drink, gardens, aviaries and the gift shop. Hosts are always accommodating and love the mother of pearl inlay dining table. Great score 😊
C. J.
Historic home built in 1914 on main road this is a great destination and a real treasure to find in Winchester.
Set in tranquil gardens with many garden features there is indoor and alfresco dining, with a variety of seating options
Warm and inviting with a gift shop and garden centre on site.
You will be spoilt for choice with homemade delectable delights and a menu also on offer.
I only wish they served real cream instead of can cream.
However the host was friendly and the sun and birdsong entertained whilst the cherry blossoms put on a fantastic display.
C. B.
Loved it. Great staff and amazing food selection. Really lovely place for lunch or morning or afternoon tea.
B. K.
Absolutely awesome lovely food amazing staff highly recommend this cafe and garden gift shop beautiful
L. B.
Thank you John and Bruce for an amazing tour of your exquisite home. The breakfast was delicious and your garden is definately worth the stop in Winchester. Thanks again The 4 from Hawkes Bay today

It's a lovely place, with nice staff/owners ....but they really struggled to make me something plant-based. I explained that I eat a vegan diet, and having been offered fries/wedges ( really....is that your idea of a meal?) we settled on a BLAT without the B. I hate wasting food, so I try to be quite specific without being patronising.....and it still came with aioli. I apologised, and questioned the aioli.. I was told it was vegan.....then that it contained egg. I apologised again and said I couldn't eat it. They re-made it on different bread and without the aoli. The result was that I felt like I was a nuisance and had caused food to be wasted.....and I apologised twice, and they didn't apologise at all. It's 2022. Vegan isn't "out there" any more, and hasn't been for a really long time.

Lovely spot. Well worth a look and a wander. Lovely food. Very friendly & welcoming service. I'll be back!
N. B.
Amazing stunning and beautiful place. Very inspired after visiting, thank you for taking me into your home and showing me around!!
M.
Gardens are divine and the food was great. Love stopping here... although we always come away with something for the garden
K. S.
An absolute gem of a place, even on a cold, wet and windy day, it was warm and welcoming and absolutely gorgeous inside. Beautifully decorated and laid out with lovely pieces of jewellery and other items. Fabulous hosts with great energy and sense of humour! A must visit in my opinion 😁
(no food photos because we ate too fast 😛) the carbonara was divine though!
S. T.
First time visited this place. My coffee was good. First time tried the whitebait omelette steamed instead of pan fried, it was nice.
D. B.
Great food lovely gardens relaxing place to chill out with friends and family fabulous gifts
G. H.
Very charming place. The proprietors have certainly put a lot of effort into the property. Amazing garden with heaps of mesmerising nooks and crannies.
Only reason I don't give it 5 🌟 was the coffee. Not strong enough for our liking. Lovely selection of cakes. Definitely worth the visit.

Great service.
Unique atmosphere, like some olden european style ? Would be a nice place for old couple to have a tea here together.
I had a Passionfruit mousse cheesecake and a mocha. The cheesecake is delicious for me, as it is unlike the usual dense cheesecake, in which one can get tired of the taste easily. The mousse texture doesnt make me feel tired of the cake.
The cafe will not be obvious, as its located within the house. Follow the sign at the roadside to drive into the parking area.
Also bought some take-away : shortbread (average to me), scone (it is not dry, i like the fact that it's the soft $ moist in texture), chocolate royale cake (i have yet to try it..to give a review)
T. T.
Awesome place relaxing atmosphere, beautiful lemon cheesecake great coffee. It's a must see.
J. C.
Absolutely loved this place! I'd never stop anywhere else for lunch. The house is beautiful, the gardens are superb, the dining courtyard was actually quite spectacular, complete with fountain. An absolute delight. It's a destination by itself! The staff were just great, and menu very extensive. I just wish I lived closer!
S. L.
What a stunning place, and the cakes are to go back for. Great advice on plants and a good selection of gifts
M.
What a lovely way to spend an afternoon relaxing in this beautiful environment.
I had 2 of their freshly baked scones with cream and jam but ate them so fast, I forgot to take a pic of them!
The shortbread biscuit and coffee was just devine.
I would highly recommend this place to young and old.
G. S.
Would recommend for tourists and locals alike - the food was divine, the hosts welcoming and the architecture and interior work in this historic house was stunning to say the least.
The homemade garlic bread is a must have and the hot chocolate was rich and creamy. Top notch food at a reasonable price - I can't wait to come back!
P. R.
Fantastic.
Host was delightful, charismatic, humourous & food & coffee was delicious. Would recommended this place for all travellers.
N. L. A.
Spirited of the moment drop in and don't regret it. Got a tour of the stunning decor if the food is as good as the taste of fine things then I'm sure it won't disappoint. Sadly ran out of time to eat but will have to come back for a treat next time. Simply put, gorgeous! Both the people as well as the scenery. Stay beautiful.

A magic place to go to, the setting, house and gardens are beautiful, peaceful, lots of outside places to be and enjoy, to dine, have good coffee and great morning/afternoon tea options very gentle on an individual or wonderful atmospherefor groups. The garden center has unusual plant options, I never go home without something special and the garden gallery has many treasures.. again...always find " a must have"
J. C.
Great place. Food, service and Gardens awesome

Thank you for a great Birthday Lunch for my Husband Graham. Celebrating with his sisters and extended family.
Your staff were were very pleasant, and the food was fantastic. A walk in the garden was a great way to end a very pleasant day.
G. &. N.
Highly recommend you stop here if passing through Winchester. Well worth a stroll through the lovely well maintained gardens, gift & plant shop, then enjoy a coffee and lunch or something from there sweet cabinet. Many different settings to enjoy your coffee inside and out. Spoilt for choice really. Well done to the owners of this lovely establishment. It was a joy to visit.

Service 10/10, Food 10/10
Ambience 10/10, Setting
......absolutely amazing. Garden Centre has a large range of very interesting plants and gifts. Unique art work for sale. To while away the time wandering through the garden centre and grounds is a truly pleasurable experience.
L. R.
A delightful find. Great coffee and food. The garden is so peaceful and interesting. Don't miss seeing the nursery and gift shop. Take your time it is worth it
m. w.
Most relaxing lunch we have had in a while, good food, a cheeky wine, then a walk through the magnificent gardens. Hosts are just lovely. Heading for a wander through the garden centre.
M. M.
Beautiful Cafe and Garden centre. Well worth the stop off between Timaru and Christchurch. Lovely outside dining seating available. Walk around their gardens and garden centre. Food yummy. Lovely space on a sunny day. Off street carparking available.
R. J.
The food was wonderful. Nicest coffee we've had in along time. Staff were extremely accmodating. Grounds are spectacular
B. W.
Very pleasant lunch, appropriately priced, service pleasant, but a little slow, however it is a popular place. Eggs benedict with mushrooms was perfect for me, and the spinach/feta crepe for Mrs also delighted. The lemon mousse cheesecake was lovely and light. When you book a table, it would be nice to be greeted appropriately.
C. B.
The gardens are the best thing about this cafe. Bordering a beautiful stream, with lovely outdoor seating areas. Coffee is lovely, and the cabinet food is decadent. It's a gorgeous setting, with minimal road noise considering its location.
R. &. P. W.
Such a pleasant Cafe guaranteed to both relax and excite diners with its many photograhic vistas from all tables, whether inside the homestead (Kavanah House), out in the courtyard, or alongside the creek's edge. The incorporated Garden Centre and gift shop with additional Aviaries makes this a place worth stopping for! Highly recommended.
S. F.
Stunning place. Went past then came back and we so pleased we did. Staff friendly and hospitable . Food very good large servings. Lovely place to eat in courtyard. Gardens beautiful. Coffee very good. Recommended to stop
a. b.
If your traveling between Ashburton and Timaru, make sure you stop in here. It's well worth a visit. A delight for the eyes as well as the taste buds.
Make sure you have a good look around. lots to see inside and out. It's a stunning place.
E. v. R.
A very nice lunch, but some disappointments though. The only non-alcoholic drink available was orange juice or water and an extra charge for a bit of mayonaise to go with my chips
J. W.
Miafora Cafe & Gardens @ Kavanagh House is a beautiful old building where you can call in for a cuppa/meal, walk around the gardens and also visit the garden centre. Plants are also available for purchase at the garden centre.
The downstairs rooms have been converted to a cafe so you can sit either inside in the rooms or outside among the plants. There are plenty of tables both inside and outside. So take some time and sit down for a cuppa.
The garden is impressive especially wire sculptures. There are seats and benches to sit and rest so you can admire the views. No visit is complete with visiting the Garden Centre.
B. C.
We loved Mia Flora wonderful setting, delightful garden, great food. Wander in the grounds, check out what's on sale, visit the garden centre, there's a bit to do. Will definitely be back.
J. J.

Dropped in for just a coffee on my drive back home to Invercargill. This place is MAGNIFICENT ,coffee I had a really nice taste,I'm afraid I didn't get any food, what I did see coming out looking really yummy, cabinet food is available to. The garden are soo incredibly well maintained with great thought put into it I'm sure this garden would like amazing in october when alot of the plants are in flower. The have lots of interesting wrought iron and barbed wire sculptures dotted around which adds more interest. The outdoor seating area is lovely with many different areas to pop yourself down, inside as well. I plant and gift shop are also here for a wonder around and purchase some lovely stuff. A MUST STOP OFF IN WINCHESTER, north of temuka ,but don't be in a hurry. Thumbs up guys
