Reviews of Vic's Cafe
H. A.
Absolutely love this place. We are regularly going there to get their bagels and focaccia. Today we stopped in for a sit down on coffee on our bike ride. It was a lovely inviting atmosphere with well informed staff, knowing their products. The service was also efficient.
L. J.
Lovely staff and beautiful coffee and hot choccy. Always remembers my order and such welcoming when I come in. Highly recommended and very nice to sit-in and enjoy a cuppa too. Thank you wonderful people for making my Friday afternoons that more brighter 😁
D. R.
Great cooked breakfast. Coffee too small. In house bakery superb. French style share a bench seating probably not for everyone. Mr and Mrs Jammed Up Inside not loose enough to enjoy having a stranger seated along side.
Answer go brunch time 10-30 to 11-30
G. H.
Has been a must visit every time we come to Christchurch but the last visit suggests it may have had it's time. It didn't help that they had run out of bagels. The coffee was 'fine' as was the 'non bagel' food. With so much strong competition now we might never go back. Shame as it's been a ritual for over two decades.
N. J.
Was pretty good but for the price (~$23) my expectations were higher.
Have previously enjoyed their salads which are more reasonably priced.
A. B.
Loving today's takeaway salad: Roasted veg with pesto and parmesan. The mushrooms are friggin delicious. Just what I need!
B. J.
A local hangout for many. Vics Cafe is rather popular with locals so has a good variety of food, I do find it a bit busy for my mostly city avoiding self, but I'm an exception. Outside area often has dogs tied up at their humans feet. A very Euro feel in this regard.
N. A.
Great choice of breads, absolutely love focaccia - the best in the city. Im a regular customer, now addicted to brioche and raspberry/ blueberry custard rolls ( baked only on Fridays). Very popular place, always full, good menu, everything is fresh (open kitchen, so you can watch the chefs cooking your meals). Great place to meet a friend or enjoy lunch. Very friendly stuff. Highly recommended!

Baking here is amazing . Coffee snack or lunch can't go wrong @ Vic's . Can get very busy . My fav spot is out front in the fresh air..cinnamon bun extremely tasty..
T. B.
Excellent bread, excellent food, excellent service; quite possibly the worst coffee in Christchurch.
K. T.
Came here for breakfast one morning with the family. Our bacon and egg bagel, ham and cheese croissant and two large coffee came out nice and food was tasty. Wouldn't mind trying some of their more expensive breakfast items.
R. S.
They make some great coffee, scones and breakfast here, friendly staff too. I loved their warm ambience on a cold rainy morning.
f. k.
The staff seemed really accommodating about queries relating to allergies, vegan foods and were happy to adjust the meal accordingly. Rustic environment with delicious fresh wholesome foods. Buy the freshly made 🍞 breads and bagels 🥯
J. G.
It’s consistent, the service is quick and the food is healthy. It’s usually busy and the freshly baked bread to take away seems popular although I haven’t tried it. Large outdoor non smoking area is great in summer. Breakfast until 2 is why I’m hooked.
S. W.
Awesome decaf coffee and prefect eggs Montreal. Staff were super friendly too.
a.
I had a bacon muffin.....Honestly, THE BEST muffin I have ever eaten!!!! If I lived in christchurch I would be an absolute regular!
S. B.
Awesome range of breads. Bad coffee, badly brewed and milk texturing was terrible. Totally recommend the bread though.
E. A.
Really enjoyed the breakfast. Friendly and faat service even though it was busy. Good location. Would recommend for a quick but really nice breakfast.
T. A. F.
Amazing Bread and one of my favourite places to get a bagel !!!! The onion one is my favourite
Why do you get one star??
For using that disgusting cloth you clean the coffee machine with to wipe the overspill of my coffee. You use that disgusting cloth to wipe the rim of my coffee cup where my lips have to touch..
You have 0 hygiene standards
K.
Food was good, but must've caught staff on an off day. Asked if the side halloumi is served fried and she looked at me in disgust and said 'you can only eat halloumi fried' (she's incorrect). Clearly did not want to be at work that day and her rudeness was slightly alarming. Guests with us that ordered 10 mins before us were told that the kitchen had no more eggs, but they were stunned to see us ordering eggs!! They also got our orders wrong so I had to scrape my side order off another plate....Visited here 5.03.21 in the early afternoon.
C. K.
I have to say the servings are HUGE...
Huge range of freshly made breads including gluten free... surprisingly tasty.
A. A.
Best bread bakers in Christchurch. The cafe is solid, with a few well chosen sandwiches and bagels and things.
V.
We came here with a group and our German shepherd. It was my first time here and was very impressed. Food portions were reasonable for the price, great customer service, food came out fast and most importantly - staff were happy & accommodating with dogs being there.
I ordered the french toast and it was fantastic - full of flavour and quite large.
Overall great experience and would definitely be back again! :)
k. m.
Nice and friendly loverly breakfast menu
M. R.
Food was delicious and service was good too
V. W.
Best bread I have come across in CHCH.. I would stay away from the vegetarian sausage in their big breakfasts, but they do nice berry crumble and pretty good coffee. Wooden floors and acoustics a bit noisy, but good atmosphere.Met friends here, got a table quick. I got a "cappuccino, naked, extra shot" and got exactly that, which doesn't always happen. The coffee was the best I've had in Christchurch. I had the Big Breakfast which was ok without being spectacular.
A. K.
My eggs Montreal was amazing!!! ❤️😍 Best breakfast I've had in a long time!
My soy Flat white was luke warm which wasn't great but the food made up for it! I went up to the barista to quickly say how much my partner and I loved our meals but he did not look at me once or really respond with anything. Would have been a 5 star but him and his coffee changed my mind ☹️
C. A.
Three and a half stars. Many people gave this cafe a ton of hype and told me I just had to go. So, I did. I don't know if it was the hype or the day I went, but underwhelmed is how I can best describe my experience. The staff is friendly enough but even with a line several people deep there is no motivation to get people seated. I ordered their green energy juice which took about 7 minutes to be delivered to the table, but it was delicious and refreshing. The food was delivered to our table pretty quickly (french toast) but I was not impressed. There are several other restaurants nearby that make a fantastic french toast that I regularly go out of my way to order. I won't be back for this one mostly because it was just bland. There wasn't anything terrible about it, it just didn't stand out.
The cafe itself is charming. They have a section of bread for sale, so if you come in early you can pick up a loaf or two of freshbaked goods (looks like these go fast). Enjoy indoor or outdoor seating at wooden tables or lounge chairs. There are posters and signs on the walls featuring upcoming events and the vibe is very laid-back. Visit this place if you're in need of a caffeine pick-me-up for sure, but brunch is a no-no.
J. W.
Used to make some fabulous chocolate choc chip bagels. Unfortunately haven't had them since I have gone back. The other breads are good, but nothing compares! Please bring them back!!
D. S.
Very popular place, well priced and good selection. Coffee was excellent
J. S.
I go there for breakfast when I go to Christchurch. There's a good.menu to choose from & plenty of choices in the cabinet. I was disappointed to see they have taken the fresh chopped fruit & yoghurt off the breakfast menu. But I'm still going to go there for breakfast.
t. “.
Great food, fast service. Perfect for before-work breakfast!
Can be busy so finding a table for big groups can be difficult though. Outdoor seating is uncovered so can be wet.
A. W.
This place is interesting. I feel that it could be great at times. I can't believe I'm saying this but the service was too fast haha. Personally I wouldn't complain about such a thing but the speed that the food arrived made me a little suspicious especially considering how busy it was. Anyway, the food wasn't anything super special. Wouldn't recommend this place however, if I was a local I would probably be there regularly. Basically, If you are driving into town for some food then I wouldn't go here. But If I was already in the neighborhood then I would probably find myself here.
r. ..
Vics looks like a run of the mill generic cafe from the outside. But go in and you’ll find they serve excellent coffee, bake amazing bread (one of the finest bakeries in Christchurch) and their food is always high quality, especially their cabinet selection. They are high quality, non pretentious always reliable cafe.
l. b.
Vic's cafe has been popular for a long time. I love their bread.. That's why I occasionally go.
Unfortunately most of the front staff always look gloomy & depressed. They never look happy & although we're regulars, they don't get any warmer.
S. T.
Huge brekkie of vegan sides....avo, spinach, mushrooms and tomato. Great coffee and a good vibe.
C. A.
Comfortable atmosphere in a spacious city cafe. Vice offer a great selection of vegetarian, GF and vegan options as well as there delicious usual fare. Coffee is very good and you'll always find a copy of the press if you'd like to relax and read the paper.
C. F.
Love this place - the atmosphere is wonderful. People are willing to share tables, yet you can still hold a private conversation. Food is marvellous, smells are wonderful and the coffee is good. One of my favourite haunts in the city.
J. C.
Excellent food at a good price (i got three big strips of halloumi as an added side with my eggs bene for only a few dollars more). Tasty, well-balanced coffee. Great range. And a pumping atmosphere. Seems to be a popular place
B. A.
Great food & coffee. Excellent vibe. Friendly service!
A. S.
Nice service. Food was average. Had the pancakes with fruit. Pancakes were quite heavy. Seating not great but I would still go back looked like some of the other stuff was pretty good.
G. R.
Read up about Vic's on Lonely Planet and decided to head that way for a breakfast - and we were pleasantly surprised to see a full house at 0730 h. Luckily, found a vacant table. The place is abuzz, constant movement and cheer. Service prompt and precise, despite the rush. Also amused by the popularity of their locally baked breads - they were flying off the shelves at a higher take off rate than that of Heathrow.
D. E.
Efficient service with great coffee food and a friendly atmosphere. Highly recommend
M.
Nice place. But judging by the reviews I believe it was my unlucky day. Food and coffee were pretty average and poached egg overcooked. Noticed there was only one chef in the kitchen, which might have contributed to the poor experience.
C. S.
Great food and excellent service. Fast despite our large table. A little steep on the price side. All the dishes are prepared well, not just the eggs benny and big breakfast.
S. W.
Simple cafe/bakery with great coffee. Always super busy. Lovely fresh bread to take home, and great 'design your own' sandwiches. Menu food is not cheap though.
A. S.
Nice food selection, lovely staff, nice outdoor area. Skip the car and get an uber or a scooter to this little city gem.
A.
Consistently Good Food - Great bread, berry crumble and coffee. Nice Egg Bennie with salmon or ham. Little stand-off service but good atmosphere.
F. F.
Food is delicious, nice atmosphere. Very expensive.
N. V.
Awesome bread but not many vegan options... So this morning I went to another place 😅
E.
This is by far my favourite cafe in Christchurch. As it has fresh ingredients and they make their own bread and have some amazing choices of drinks savoury and sweets.
B. C.
Queue can get long around lunch time however the food is good. Vic's have a good range of cabinet food. I also recommend the Foccacia and Bagels from the bakery section.
M. K.
Good prices, fast service. Got our food and drinks in less than 5 minutes of ordering on a busy day. Very pleased :)
B.
Amazing bread, top vibe,
E. T.
Lovely food but the guy serving today needs to be sacked, he doesn't have an ounce of customer service in his body, walking around like a stroppy child!
H. C. N.
For me they sell the best European bread in town, specially the grainy one is amazing. They also make good C4 coffee.
B. F.
Great tasty salads -small $8.50, and freshly made juices. Vegetarian lasagne is yummy with a layer of sweet potato and topped with stretchy cheese $11.50.
T. D.
Very nice staff and clean cafe. I did think the food was a little expensive but thats ok. The hot drinks were amazing! Will visit again
J. S.
Okay breakfast, not bad coffee. Not my first choice, but not my last. Nice atmosphere.
R. A.
A really nice cafe with a lovely atmosphere and friendlystaff. I only had a coffee, but it was excellent.
D. A.
Popular, friendly & reliable. Good fresh food. Bonus, variety of freshly baked breads available to buy. Comfortable sunny courtyard.
m. b.
Vic's is a Christchurch institution with good reason. Great coffee (not to mention the delicious breads)! Always buzzing.
C. F.
Pricy and crappy parking, but damn nice food! Definitely a treat lunch when you gotta get away from work. Love the decor too.
R. M.
My absolute fave! The sandwiches and coffee are excellent. May be tricky to get a seat at ‘brunch rush hour’ on weekends!!
R. S.
Amazing food and service. Coffee was delicious too 😍
A. T.
Always have good experiences with Vic's cafe. Have been going here for years, gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, allergen friendly.
J. B.
Excellent coffee. Good ambience. Friendly staff. Not as noisy as I remember.
J. G.
Distinctly family unfriendly with no high chairs. No table service to justify the high prices and snooty staff. Food and coffee was good. They sell nice bread from the Ferrymead bakery.
J. H.
Great coffee and food. I don’t think I have ever received my lunch as quickly as I did at Vic’s :-)
S.
Nice food and coffee ☕ didn't feel friendly though
C. C.
Obviously popular. Lots of people there. Dig friendly outside with water bowls on the ground for the pooches
C.
Very busy, got the last table, but still super quick service and delicious food. Staff all polite and professional. Thanks
K. V.

S. H.
Best bread (sourdough) in Christchurch bar none. Phone ahead to reserve a loaf to avoid disappointment.
J. R.
What a great place for coffee, breakfast or a chat! Do yourself a favour and swing on by. I love it and I know you will too!
J. E.
These guys do great coffee and mind bendingly good scrambled eaggs and bacon on 8 grain toast!
N. B.
No marshmellow. Big breakfast should be renamed to “moderately sized” breakfast. No syrup. At all.
B. M.
Great bagels great coffee and relaxed atmosphere
L.
Love the sandwiches here. Coffee is pretty hit and miss.
D. N.
