Reviews of Tarras Country Cafe
V.
A must place to visit and stop for food and drinks. Excellent hone style cooking. Really amazing staff. Its a very beautiful and lovely cafe with a lot of character. Looking forward to going back again. Thank you for your amazing hospitality 😊
E.
Great food & coffee - lady who served us was epic....remembered that I didn't want coriander on my Avo Smash and liked my mates T-shirt 🤣👍😊
F.
Perfectly situated to break your journey to or from the Lindis Pass, the Tarras Country Cafe is a local institution that has been serving locals and travellers for more than a century.
With all sorts of delicious things on offer it's a tough choice deciding what to have. I settled on a cheese scone and a latte out on the front deck. Absolutely delicious!
T.
Great experience. Good coffee and the best chocolate brownie! Thank you for welcoming everybody, glad to see that there is still way how to do it :).
B.
Best date scone I’ve ever had in my life. Lovely staff, great coffee, very homely feel. New favourite place!
L.
Delicious cheese scone! beautiful location with a fire to warm your fingers. Coffee and chai latte were ok (flat white very foamy, chai not dissolved). Service was not enjoyable - felt disengaged, forgetful and unfriendly.
A.
Lovely Cafe with beautiful indoor and outdoor seats, I tried the lamb wrap and it was amazing! Coffee was a better average and cakes were fresh and delicious. The only negative is the absence of their own toilets, you have to use the public ones outside. Despite that I highly recommend this place, it has such a nice atmosphere :)
L.
Great coffee.... A good check point before heading into Lindiss Pass from Wanaka
C.
Fabulous food, friendly staff and warm fire.
T.
Thank you for all our wonderful dining experiences with you. We will so miss you...
and thank you for standing up for our freedom of choice... love creates humans...
F.
Welcoming staff. We'll presented and love food coffee really good
J.
Tarras Country Cafe has incredible scones (we had one with dates, topped with jam and cream). They also have a huge selection of biscuits, pastries, sandwiches, etc. The mocha was excellent as well. It's a great place to stop if you're driving from Wanaka to Tekapo, and there's a public restroom as well.
D.
As far as roadside diners go, this is right up there with some of the best in the biz. If you are passing through is it worth stopping in to stretch your legs, grab a coffee and a bite to eat. I had a lamb shank and a cola which was nice. They put a lot of mash on it which was a bit overwhelming but I got through it, also the meat on the shank fell off the bone. If you're in a hurry, they have pre made sandwicches and cakes, but seriously the food was pretty quick anyway.. Im giving this place a solid 4 stars. Make sure you check it out! Cheers.
c.
Lovely service ,warm smiley face and food delicious along with a lovely coffee😊
R.
You guys are amazing for standing up against tyranny. This what real freedom is. It may be hard for you now but pat yourselves on the back. People like you are the Rosa Parks of our generation.
J.
Great food, amazing NZ made wool products. Real quality from the local landowner, unexpected and marvellous. Best hot chocolate in the cafe and decent soup too...
R.
Good food & a handy spot for a stop on the road.
A.
Great coffee, and food well above expectations!
True hospitality at its best!
S.
The best coffee and cheese scone in NZ
C.
Delicious break along a beautiful drive. Super friendly staff and several options to eat / drink.
G.
very nice food in a easy to access location in a pleasant setting.
D.
Very enjoyable, great coffee!!!! And yummy cakes .
Staff are so friendly and helpful.
P.
Great food & coffee stop more or less halfway between Queenstown & Geraldine.
A.
Nice coffee and superb cabinet food. Friendly staff as well.
C.
Lovely can hope they get more tourists soon great place to stop.
M.
A must stop. Date scones the best. Coffee superb.
T.
A quaint place to stop your journey for great coffee and something to eat (the scones are amazing) Warm yourself by the fire on those colder days as the friendly staff prepare your coffee or food. Wander next door to browse and purchase NZ merino products.
R.
Very cute decor and vibe, lovely staff and honestly best mushrooms on toast ever. Lovely breaky stop
J.
Always stop off on our way to Christchurch, great staff food and coffee. Plenty of parking and beside a fuel stop
S.
My Husband loved his soup. I had the snapper and chips which I was excited about as we don't often get snapper down South. It was weird. Hard to cut through and had the texture of calamari.
The carrot cake was nice.
W.
Very nice whitebait sandwich, very nice staff
J.
Great spot for a comfort stop. Cafe has great food and smoothies are excellent.
J.
We love going to this Cafe. It's has a real rustic feel to it. It's cosy with a friendly atmosphere which is a credit to the staff. The food is great with cabinet food as well as a blackboard menu.
S.
Super cute little cafe on the main road between QT and Lake Tekapo. Excellent coffee and spectacular blueberry cheesecake and brownie. Also, it was really great to sit near a cosy fire.
J.
Great cafe.
Sad they feel they have to close because of divisive rules imposed by a tyrannical government
J.
Thank you for your courage in standing up for fairness, equality and kindness. God bless.
S.
Great little cafe to stop on the way to Queenstown from Mt. Cook.
The best Blueberry Cheesecake I’ve ever eaten.
A.
Lovely and busy spot, great service love that there are alternative milk options would love to see more vegan, gluten free food options. Super easy to make the nachos vegan with, vegan cheese, salted nacho chips, vegan sour cream. Also a great idea to ask people who order alternative milks of they would like a chocolate fish or marshmallow with their drink as if they are having an alternative milk they are likely lactose intolerant or vegan.
S.
Fantastic food, great ambiance and service. I wish we lived closer!
M.
Beautiful carrot cake, my husband got the fire going again and the very nice lady who served us was very pleased with him
D.
Good coffee, food and service. Quaint shops.
K.
Great food, awesome coffee and lovely staff
V.
Absolutely the best pie in New Zealand. Beautiful flaky pastry and the pie was full of all tender Lamb Shank meat. With a side of yummy coleslaw and tomatoe relish just finished it perfectly. Will definitely be back.
B.
Yep, worth a stop to refresh. Nice location and clean public toilets.
N.
Not very busy but coffee took a long time to arrive at the table
A.
Nice little cafe but have to use the public toilets in the carpark, which aren't the best.
P.
Friendly staff. Nice luuch. Enjoyed the seafood chowder
K.
Shame it's closed enjoyed our coffee there several weeks ago
R.
A great place to stop on the drive and take in a snack. Great selection of delicious offerings and quaint little shop. Staff were very warm and friendly.
A.
We stopped here for morning tea on Valentines Day and were impressed with the adorable heart shaped scones and shortbread! Thanks for the extra effort. Well worth the stop!
B.
A really cute cafe/restaurant along a very scenic drive. The decor is instagram-worthy. It's a little pricy but both the food and the staff were very nice. We ordered a steak and coffee. My sister required her food to be made in a very specific way and the staff was very accommodating. Definitely a must stop during a road-trip.
S.
Best burger I've ever had.
T.
Worth the stop. Great coffee & scone and friendly staff. Enjoyed the visit and went next door to look at the clothing etc.
The Tarras Cafe, was great and I would recommend, it was cold outside so it was lovely sitting next to the fireplace while we had our coffee... very cosy :-)
S.
Great food at a lovely spot. Worth stopping whether you are heading to Wanaka or Christchurch or just enjoying the scenery 😀.
T.
Coffee nice and strong. Great setting and lovely on a sunny day sitting outside.
R.
Nice cafe with amazing view and fast service.
U.
Good food with a lovely little garden.
K.
Perfect coffee, delicious egg and bacon pie, scrummy carrot cake.
A.
Food looked lovely on the plates outside. I was just passing and stopped to visit the shops. Toilets outside were lovely and clean.
G.
Cute little cafe with shops attached including House of Shrek museum thingy.
Had the vege soup and ginger crunch - lovely!
B.
Great wee store, terrific food cabinet and had coconut milk for coffees, well worth a stop off to check it out.
M.
Basically the only place to stop for lunch f you're traveling from Queenstown area to Dunedin area and happen to be around here for lunch. I was disappointed that there weren't a lot of choices... there's a small but decent menu, as well as some bakery items. We tried the whitebait patties and the lamb shank, as both were New Zealand/local area foods. They were good, but nothing special. The place was nice and warm with a fire going in late June. :) No indoor bathrooms...so that was the cold part!
K.
Love making a run up the valley to Tarras for different cafe option. Super cool wee village location. Nice fresh food friendly genuine service.
J.
Friendly staff, nice food cabinet too.
R.
This cafe was like an oasis after crossing the Lindis Pass. I rate it A for awesome! Everything was very nice, the staff lovely and helpful and the food fast and very nice and what a real country garden atmosphere to dine. A+++
D.

B.

This cafe is in a lovely rural spot. They happily agreed to vary a menu item to suit me. The food and coffee were both good.
s.

Lovely Food and Staff
J.
Great food stop. Photo of some of the cabinet selection.
B.
Very tasteful espresso with milk. Nice selection of cakes. Friendly staff. Comfortable quiet countryside atmosphere. A few steps aside is a woolen clothes shop.
C.
Best coffee I had in New Zealand! Had I realized I would have filled a thermos! The Merino Shop next door is wonderful. You will not find items like it anywhere else-I searched and now have had to order online to have the items I desired. Don't bother attempting to find better deals-just buy the items and save on $$$$ for shipping.
P.
A very good place to stop by on the way from Christchurch to Queenstown or back to fill up fuel for your body and for your car (there is a gas station on the side).
We ordered one seafood chowder and one fish & chips. My friend loved the seafood chowder while I don't like the fish & chips even they served a big plate. It smelled fish but didn't taste good, they did not serve it with any kind of sauce so it tasted plain.
The staff need to be more friendly I think.
For those who like Merino clothing, they have a shop of this product.
M.
Awesome wee cafe. Delicious food! Great service and the coffee was perfect.
T.
What an awesome spot for lunch! Amazing coffee and food and the staff are super friendly and cheerful. Totally recommend these guys never disappointed. Thank You

Stopped by Tarras Country Cafe in 2016 as we were hungry and their Lamb Sandwich was served with a special chutney which was heavenly to the pallet. What a great find after a long drive from Mount Cook! Missed it and will visit again soon!
S.
I've just read a review about this cafe which was less than complimentary. I have visited it a number of times and the food and staff are always great. The customer must have got out of the wrong side of the bed!!!
H.
Had a nice lunch there great atmosphere and staff where great we stopped there to have a lunch break before heading to Lake Tekapo 😀
G.
Love the lamb wrap 🤤
S.
A nice Cafe in a superb location. Enjoy a coffee and snack but wander down the path to a museum about Shrek (the sheep), or into the shops next door that offer really interesting and top quality goods. A stop I recommend to all my friends passing through Central Otago.
J.
Great stop for streching leg and have a bite.

N.
What a quaint little place on the way to Queenstown. We stop by just for a morning coffee break and couldn't resist the cheesy scones which was so yummy and filling. The raspberry coconut friand is gf which was delish with a side of cream. The brownies are gf too. Everything there was baked or cooked on the premises.
Fireplace was a nice addition to the coziness of this cafe. Coffee was good. Our kid loved her babycino that came with the smallest and cutest dessert spoon.
A must stop by to strecth your legs. Use the nearby bathroom. Fill up fuel for your vehicle and do some shopping if you like. Merino wool clothing and some local tea and beverages.
D.

(Translated) Arrived just before closing time (3pm) Too bad that they close so early. Fortunately we got a nice soup. It was delicious and the bread that was served with it too. We had pumpkin soup and broccoli / blue cheese. They were happy when everyone finally left, so it was not very quiet.
Highly recommended to stop and walk into the shops.

Aunts are having fun serving customers 😸 It's a waste to pass.
