Reviews of Moeraki Boulders Cafe
T.
Pleasant trip down to the beach. Only 5minutes and you are standing on top of the boulders . Plenty of parking space for motorhomes . Restaurant , gift shop and toilets ..
w.
Love this place ,if your driving down the east coast of the south island it's definitely worth a visit as the boulders are pretty spectacular 🪨🪨🪨😋
K.
Moeraki Boulders - a Hidden gem.
$2 donation entry and a very short walk to the beach. You will see the boulders on the left side - scattered across the beach. To
The cafe had good food - highly recommend the fish and chips and the seafood chowder.
A.
delicious lunch, great walk along the beach. check the tide before visiting. highly recommended
T.
Rainy road rest stop but happy to give these lovely people some $$$ on Day one of NZ's Omicron Red light setting.
D.
Great little spot to stop and have an ice cream before or after checking out the awesome moeraki boulders. There is a selection of cafe food and a decent menu, didn't eat from it so can't comment on the quality of the kai. Great views and outdoor seating, worth a look.
A.
Fascinating boulders lying on a beautiful beach. Short walk down to see them.
S.
Great location, good coffee, ok food.
A.
Great food and coffee, awesome location and stunning views.
T.
Definitely good view! Coffee was all right, so as food. But for the remote area, it is good enough.
L.
Lovely spot to relax after spending some time on the beach admiring the boulders. Beautiful food at reasonable prices
M.
Excellent food and restaurant service. Friendly staff who were very switched on to the customer care. Beef burger is superb.
s.
Beautiful drive to the Moeraki Boulders from Dunedin. Lovely little Cafe with great options of food. Amazing views from the Cafe deck. Worth going not to miss.
N.
Loved it... Its a nice cafe by the beach. They have constructed private path to the beach and provided washing facilities to take sand off your feet. They only charge you $2 per person to use it.Toilets at the cafe were clean and free to use.
The food at cafe was great and service was quick too.
J.
I really thought there'd be more boulders there, I kind of imagined the whole beach would be covered in boulders not just the handful that was there, but kids had fun climbing all over them. Staff in the café and shop were really friendly, and the tea was nice.
E.
Really nice cafe with good selection of food and drinks. Nice view over the boulders and ocean. Also a great souvenir shop next to it and toilets in the building. Choice of in and outside seating. Short walk down the stairs to the boulders, really nice to walk along the beach. When I was there, there were even Lamas at the parking spot
M.
One of the remarkable wonders of nature. This is a natural rock formation from geologic times. Watch out while inspecting the boulders as it can be slippery at times. Best time to visit would be during sunset or sunrise with a clear view of horizon as it sets an amazing background when you snap those photos.
N.
Stopped on impulse on rainy day. Only couple of others there so nice and quiet. Food from cabinet very good and served with a smile.
C.
Not as good as I remembered it to be. Kids enjoyed it though a nice spot to visit all in all
P.
This is a really good stopping place for a break in your journey. The restaurant/cafe are is well set out with inside and outside seating and can easily cater for the tour buses that shop here. There is also a little gift shop. Good access to the beach and then a short but nice walk along the sand to the boulders.
W.
Good cafe near the beach access. Has toilets inside and plenty of parking. Has some animals to see by the carpark
T.
A short stroll along the beach is refreshing. If u don't dine at the restaurant, u gotta pay $2 to enter the beach. The toilet at the restaurant is for customer only. Not open for public.
Just dine there, go for a walk after food. The food there is nice.
J.
The uniqueness of the Moeraki Boulders is an excellent reason to visit. While there is a $2 donation charge to wander down the beach, it is well worth it. It is amazing to see these huge round boulders and even more awesome to see inside some that have broken up.
Moeraki Boulders is a very popular stop for tourists, so can get busy with everyone wanting to take photos at the same time. We have visited several times and found that arriving early in the day is the best time.
P.
Had a very good lunch, The seafood Chowder was awesome. The Views are awesome. Thanks for that
S.
Moeraki Boulders (Kaihinaki). Stop here for few minutes to experience the naturally formed unusually large boulders between Moeraki and Hampden beach.
There's a nice cafe and a gift shop to pick up some souvenirs. Car park and amenities available. 3 minutes walk from car park to the Boulders. You would need 15-30 minutes for this experience.
P.
It's been at least 10yrs since my last visit and there seems to be less boulders! Some have broken and only one still emerging from the cliffs. Still worth a visit and ensure you visit the cafe and gift shop. Also remember not to visit at high tide - probably an hour either side is fine. A bit difficult to get around the cliff at high tide.
S.
Food was good, coffee bitter and not very nice.
Lovely views.
G.
Saw some remarks which might not have been fair. But no charges now if you made your way down from the restaurant. I had a fabulous fish and chip here.. in fact, one of the best i even had.
G.
Very friendly staff. Lovely whitebait fritters. Impressive gift shop too.
S.
Great place to have a hot choc and scone after viewing the wonders of tbe Moeraki Boulders.
J.
5 stars for the scenery and the ancient rocks, 3 stars for the café and the souvenirs shop. Been here twice in 12 months, love the scenery and the unique ancient rocks. Had some great time here taking beautiful photos. Don't mind the honesty donation of $2 for passing through, you can stop by for a cup of coffee and enjoy the view. The café has a platform with great ocean view. All in all, worth stopping by.
V.
Nice view of the beach from tne panoramic windows. Tables on the terrace to use on a good day. Lovely chowder. Lots of kiddies options. Also lovely cakes available as well as ice ceam.
T.
Really pretty restaurant! Good food. Service was ok. Pay to see boulders from here or can park down the road for free and walk little more - who ever works for you.
T.
Facinating to see these boulders on the beach but also still in the beach face.
Make time to stop for a coffee and snack. Awesome views from the restaurant.
H.
A place with great food and excellent ambiance to dine and enjoy the moment in time!!!😍😍😍
G.
Interesting location, pick your visit time carefully as you can't access the boulders at high tide.
Restaurant and shop are great and the food we had was fabulous.
J.
Food was good had a chicken wrap which I can recommend. It's a special place , had the feeling that the boulders have shrunk - but have been told it's the sand the water moves which burrowing the boulders.
D.
First time in the South Island for a holiday. Went to the Boulders then had lunch. Best lunch, great friendly staff. Don't walk away without stopping and having a coffee and something to eat. Thanks guys next time we are down from Rotorua to your part of the world we will stop back in.
J.
Great place to stop for lunch, great food and good pricing. Friendly staff, good service. We will be back next time down in the SI.
D.
It was closed and to be fair it was Christmas 🎄 day. Will definitely go back to get a cup of joe to enjoy in the beach.
K.
Got here and it started to shower, so it was the most pleasant experience as it was really cold. But it was cool to see naturally shaped spherical rocks. Like others have mentioned, I was surprised to see a gift shop and restaurant to cash in on the crowd. C'mon man.
b.
Spacious well designed cafe. Not far from the Moeraki Boulders beach. Friendly staff great service.
C.
Love this place for breakfast or brunch, if you drive by don't miss out! Superb meal with awesome scenery!
I.
We came to Moeraki Boulders Cafe this morning and it was great - the location was fantastic, just at the entrance to the beach and the service was excellent!
C.
We had a lovely Blue Cod meal before we went down to the beach to check out the beautiful boulders. Despite the price, the fish was amazing.
The boulders are beautiful. They have such unique formations on them. Almost turtle shell like on some (not the colour).
W.
Great place to hide from the cold! Had a coffee before heading down to the boulders. The boulders were quite cool....
F.
Solid 3.5. Food is simple but tasty. Chowder was full of fish but bit too much flower and so too thick.
Coffee is ok - but on a cold day still a life saver. Service is friendly and fast.
Overall a good place to stop on the way even if you not going for the boulders
L.
Brilliant view, brilliant service, brilliant food. Seafood platter was top marks. Best Salmon in NZ.
J.
Good view over the beach inside the cafe. Only a short walk down the beach to see the boulders.
R.
Nice place with awsome geological features. Had a hike along the beach.
Easy to find and walk
r.
Such a beautiful place and great food and fantastic staff...highly reccomend visiting Moeraki Boulders...5 stars....awesome.
B.
Great taste of Chowder.Nice views and a short walk around. The price for walk is 2 NZD
E.
Nice café with views and a fireplace. There are some sockets on the wall in case you need to charge your devices. Very friendly and helpful staff. Great range of pies, sandwiches and cakes (although no prices shown). The salmon pie was lovely, however, the coffee was awful - asked for another one but it was still horrible. Too acid, seemed overextracted. They either need better beans or a better barrista.
J.
Always lovely food coffee and service. Gorgeous views from cafe too.
J.
Worth the visit on a good weather day! The souvenir shop nearby has a great range for your NZ memories.
The restaurant/cafe there is pretty average, better off continue the drive onwards to nearby cities such as Dunedin.
C.
Great flat white and super friendly staff.
The view is amazing also the boulder beach, worth a stop.
J.
Not a bad lil place to stop and look at. Very interesting seeing these naturally made Boulders. Very good photo opportunity.
M.
Cosy spot for refreshments after stroll on the beach...thumbs up.
L.
Foods are alright and all the staff is kind.
View from cafe was so nice!! 😍😁😍😁
Check it out
J.
Didnt have any food but the ice cream was really nice!
B.
Food is good, coffee is terrible, but the main bonus is the view which is fantastic.
J.
Lovely staff. Great to enjoy a simple fish meal without all the trimmings. Gorgeous views.
L.
We walked out without buying anything because the cakes and slices were expensive. Only one sort of muffin and nobody acknowledged us.
S.
Go to the Cafe...
Really Yummy...
Not cheap, but worth it...
And...
Of course there are a couple of Rocks worth checking out...
d.
This is such a beautiful cafe with amazing views. They have good selection of food and drinks at nominal rates. The staff were very helpful and polite.
S.
Food and Cappuccino were okay, the people very nice, but the boulders quite disappointing to me
D.
Our family all thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Moeraki boulders cafe. We were celebrating a birthday & were pleasantly surprised with a handmade bunch of flax flowers on the table for the birthday girl. Our table had a great view of the ocean & the large fire was on making it very cosy!! We were allowed to bring our own birthday cake for the occasion & the staff bought it out with a candle glowing. The blue cod meals were huge & delicious!! The staff were friendly & helpful. We loved it & couldn't fault anything.
V.
Beautiful beach in a lovely day
L.
Beautiful day. Sea a lovely blue warm. Enjoyed a brisk walk down to the beach and took some photos.
D.
Great place to stop and relax while overlooking the ocean. Good food at reasonable prices with very friendly service.
N.
Very nice place to eat or drink something after a walk on the Boulders beach. I took the fish burger wich was soooo big and very good too. The welcoming was warm, especially the one of the scottish girl in summer 2019 (maybe on WHV ?). They also do take aways and ice creams.
Do not confond the beach with the restaurant. If you want to see the Boulders, you have to come at low tide. It's not the restaurants fault if you can't see them !
J.
Unique and interesting, well worth a look. Just a short walk from the carpark. There was a lot of people there when I visited, so probably worth trying to choose a quiet time of day. Theres also a nice little restaurant next to the carpark, with lovely views over the oceans.
D.
Good service boulders what can you say rocks in the sand but good service at the Cafe
c.
Very nice place , great coffee
Y.
Best viewed when tide is not in. They are not as large nor as impressive as the publicity indicates. The Cafe and coffee overlooking the boulders is good however.
E.
Great spot, beautiful views, the manager also dealt with an awful rude customer very well while I was there also. Great job.
B.
Beautiful spot, friendly staff and good coffee ☕️
K.
Worth finding this location on your coastal journey along the South Island, ideally better at low tide but viewable either way, a coffee shop and store on site.
R.
Had good coffee. Nice spot. Great views. Quite touristy. Unpretentious.
D.
Lovely place to have lunch and relax for a while. It's also just a few minutes walk to the Moeraki Boulders. One of the worlds most unusual natural concretion constructs.
A.
It’s a good place with a great view to stop and have coffee while you are traveling
I.
A great place to visit and have a cuppa and a meal.
M.
Strange but not so impressive. Too many tourists (like us). Nice walk along the beach.
N.
Super amazing place to visit. Try their fish platter which is so delicious.
j.
Delicious fish...oh my word, and a stunning view. Thanks for the awesome service guys.
J.
Worth a visit . Go when it's low tide. So check the tidal charts before rocking up and expecting too see massive round boulders.
H.
The blue cod fillet dish on its own was outstandingly delicious.
C.
Nice stop on the way to the Dunedin great food and great place to have a walk on the beach
N.
Unusual geological formation. Fun to see. The cafe and gift shop are pleasant and well stocked.
C.
Best eggs Benedict I've had ! So good 😍
T.
Wow, awesome breakfast here, so good!
Not too far from Dunedin, drive here early and enjoy a great breakfast before heading down to the Boulders.
Well worth it.
H.
Great food, fantastic service and the views are superb. I take a group of elderly people there on a regular basis for lunch and the adjacent shop is always a highlight. The boulders are below and it only costs $2 to walk down a well maintained track to them.
A.
Beautiful spot. Pay $2 and you can feed the Alpacas and Deer which is fun!
L.
Great meals, and walks to boulders
S.
This cafe has spectacular sea views.
It was so relaxing while I was having a cuppa. There was no overpriced as a tour place , Moeraki so I would say the owner may be a genuine person.
I do recommend come over the cafe and enjoy coffee .
C.
The boulders are really something special to see. Do yourself a favour and check the tide times before going:)
N.
Meal was lovely. Good size burger and very tasty. Didn't have to wait long for meal. Great service .Toilets need updating thou.
H.
Big meals we'll priced nice viewd
C.
Sad the cafe was closed I assume due to covid no visitors but was interesting seeing the boulders
C.
Loved the boulders but not so ecstatic about the Cafe was reasonably busy but didn't impress unfortunately
A.
Such a lovely place to visit
There is something serene in this place
Nice cafe and one of the best seafood restaurants in Moeraki itself.
B.
Can get some food Gluten free, but in kitchen not seperated.. Early arrival best before 1.30pm.. A great place to sit and eat with a view on a bad weather day if travelling. The boulders walk not far from here.. Reminder coin needed for access from here..
R.
2nd time here, place became way better looking and a bit more touristy.
Be sure to tip before heading down to the boulders (it'll be rude not to).
C.
awesome place! Great photo spot. Also have a break and strech those legs to walk on the beach ✌️
H.
Beautiful place and Pancake was great!
N.
Beautiful wonders of nature. Be aware of, though, of the numerous tourists who also visit the place.
E.
Beautiful place to visit, only takes a few minutes to get to on the beach. Good leg stretching during a road trip.
L.
Friendly staff, good cheese rolls, scones a bit doughy unfortunately,. Good view of the boulders. Sunny deck where you can sit in the sun and see the sea. A lovely spot
C.
Visited here with the camper and two small kids, we had a wonderful breakfast. The staff were friendly, the view was amazing, there was a decent toybox to keep the kids quiet while we waited for the meals and when they came, the food was incredible! The portions on the Eggs Benedict (on croissant), big breakfast, and pancakes were very generous and everything tasted great. The coffee's were nice and strong. We loved seeing the boudlers after breakfast too and feeding the deer and alpacas on our way out. All in all, I'd totally recommend it to anyone if they are traveling through.
K.
Absolutely delish pancakes and really friendly service😊
B.
This was excellent, service plus food, and the scenery was also exceptional
E.
Such a lovely staff and great and yummy food.
A.
The best clam chowder i ever tested. Highly recommended 👍🏻
P.
This is a great place the kids love climbing in the Boulders
L.
Great location with views, has an outside area which looks out over the beach. Inside comfortable seating also with beach views. Staff very friendly but food and coffee is just okay.
M.
Lovely hot chocolates after checking out the boulders down on the beach. Don't forget your $2 coin to support upkeep of the path down to the beach.
B.
Is a phenomenon on why the boulders are so round like marbles. Is great for photography. Have been there many times but still love it. Take a walk along the beach and feel the sand between your toes and leave foot prints and memories
J.
Good coffee with a pleasant view of the rolling waves.
E.
Incredible sight, worth the visit!
J.
Brilliant cafe! Loved the pie and chips! Charlie Puth was also playing on the radio! Love his songs!
V.
Great pancakes. We love this place and have been many many times
L.
Great beach, beautiful mysterious rocks and blue water.
J.
Stopped to see the boulders, and wasn't expecting much from the cafe. But the menu seemed really good. We had the soup of the day, which was very tasty, and we appreciated the serving size options.
V.
Nice venue but dissapointed with the 15% surcharge (Public Holiday.) Food was quite expensive to start with so the extra 15% was a deal breaker. Stopped at the next eatery & got the same for 50% less.
H.
Lovely view worth the visit.
R.
Very pleasant sitting on the outside deck watching the sea, it's therapeutic in some ways couple this with good food and drinks and you have the perfect match. Access to the moeraki borders is provided which are the perfect accompaniment.
G.
ordered seafood platter for only $49, really valued~ the view beside Cafe is good, recommended to come and take a rest after hours of driving~
V.
Convenient and attractive. Roofline suggesting the boulders
D.
Love this beach. The boulders are a fascinating geological feature and can create some amazing vistas. Great to have a cafe and shop handy too. Not far from main road and good parking. Beach can be crowded at times... can be worth allowing time to wait for gaps between large groups as the photos make the wait worthwhile
P.
Amazing natural stone formations. There is currently a new boulder being 'born'!
2.
Time to waterblast the deck and lookout out. To much bird poo everywhere
N.
A nice spot to break a journey either north or south on the main highway. It will cost you $2 to visit the beach via a maintained pathway (honesty box) but it's a nice beach. The cafe and shop offer very good value so it all balances out nicely.
L.
Weren't as big as I expected but it was still nice.
P.
We stopped here for a cold drink, a good variety of beverages. We got the kombucha which did the trick... refreshing! Friendly service. Cheers
y.
Great views from the cafe.
inside and outside seating.
Very busy.needs two cashiers I think, to deal with tourists from the buses... I even got shoved aside by one. I guess they think they're more important than everyone else.
Toilets inside the cafe are clean and tidy.
Dont grizzle about the donation box to the beach (it's a donation, not mandatory!Geez)..
you can always use the DOC access instead,..
T.
Still serving fantastic food at great prices.
Seafood chowder is highly recommended.
Friendly staff and amazing views
J.
Really nice beach and the boulders were surprisingly cool. Strange that we don't see more of these around. Well worth a quick stop even just to stretch your legs. Looks like they would be inaccessible at high tide.
When you turn off at the sign, continue straight to the DOC carpark, then it's a short walk along the beach. If you turn left it's a $2 entry through the cafe.
G.
We had the blue cod battered fillets which was absolutely delicious. Light, crunchy, crispy batter to die for. Superb meal.
J.
Þhis place is amazing well worth the trip
M.
Good food, great view
S.
The restaurant food was great. However, portions were too small and prices too high. I supposed it'd be fine for tourists trying it out once in a lifetime. Boulders themselves... A bunch of rocks on the beach, nothing more.
b.
You must stop here. It’s totally unique.
j.
Food was delicious. I had the fresh catch of the day. We sat outside and even though it was a chilly day we were blocked from the wind on the deck. Beautiful view of ocean. Just watch out for gulls-they will try to steal your food. Gift shop next door had reasonable prices.
B.
Great coffee and muffins, great service
J.
Worth to go if you are travelling in this area, but don't go there only for seeing that. It's unusual, but in my opinion not so impressive.
S.
Gorgeous view but most of the food was prepackaged
R.
Good place to relax when visiting the boulders, nice view from the deck. Service was OK. Milkshakes need work.
L.
The café and gift shop were the attraction to this strange phenomenon, the seafood chowder delishous - made with coconut milk so made it a bit different.
D.
Someone told me about this place and I wasn't sold, but going and looking at these things is actually fascinating, also nice beach.
A.
Very nice place, but you need to pay to understand the creation of these boulders, here are the answers
R.
Great experience to see the round rocks called boulders on the beach. Only pay a 2 dollar contribution before you walk down the stairs to the beach. Different boulders right in the beach, some of them are even broken up and displays how there are formed together.
H.
Really love this cafe and the staff are always nice, although if anyone there could arrange a public bin it would save the staff from always having to accept my icecream wrappers just sayin...
k.
Loved this place we were lucky to get the weather on our side when we visited! The beach is beautiful and we'll kept. It was quite busy with a little t of people to see the famous boulders. I enjoyed the fact we were unrestricted from touching or even sitting in the boulders...with a lot of people standing on them trying to get there yoga poses shot for Instagram (losers) there is a nice cafe near by that offer fresh seafood dishes. I got the best chowder I've had in a while. The price is a bit steep considering the fish is just beside them but I guess that's tourist prices for you!
G.
Moeraki Boulders Cafe is fabulous. Food is always very fresh. A wide range and we'll presented.
Scott (Owner) is always very helpful and accommodating towards groups. The view overlooking the Moeraki Boulders is superb. Well worth it to take a walk down to the beach and see them.
A MUST stop on way to/from Oamaru.
R.
Fab food. Fab staff. Fab outlook. Good value
M.
asks you to pay to use a doc walk way down to the beach.
M.
Lots of food from the restaurant to choose from. The prices are reasonable and the outdoor seating plentiful. It has a fireplace and the menu is clearly presented in the entrance. Great place to eat after enjoying the boulders. There is a portion of the building dedicated to information. With toilets for tourists stopping by. There is another set of toilets within the restaurant but these were locked.
F.
Typical tourist spot, but still amazing views.
I.
The boulders should be on everyone's bucket list! They are world class in terms of their geology and uniqueness. We stop every time we pass and never get tired of the bracing walk along the beach and taking photos of the kids jumping around. Accessibility is hard if unsure of foot. Last section to beach us 12 wooden steps that can be slippery. Cafe has good views and plenty of space. Good parking.
l.
Spacious eating area with plenty of room for cooking as well, lovely young man at counter, helpful accommodating, friendly and informative. Not much for vegans though
M.
Quick service. Great place to visit.
A.
Gorgeous views from the cafe and a big deck to sit on outside. Friendly helpful staff. Toilets were clean. The kids enjoyed their milkshake. The tea was just a teabag in a stainless pot of water with a tiny jug of milk - I prefer cafes that use tea leaves and it's nice when they use pretty tea pots so this was very basic but ok. We didn't eat there but it looked like pretty standard, kid friendly, tea-room type food - hot chips, sandwiches, biscuits. Unfortunately we couldn't go down to the beach as the tide was high so we couldn't see the boulders - the sea comes all the way to the dunes at high tide.
E.
There is many Boulder, also an alpaca
E.
What a strange sight. Almost perfectly round stone boulders sitting on a smooth sandy beach!
We visited whilst travelling between two Top 10 campsites in our hired motorhome, following the roads signs from the main road to a large free carpark. In through a couple of little shops/tourist information area and you are straight onto the beach and there they are.
Very strange but interesting and worth the visit, so recommended 👍
D.
A must stop place to see the Boulders
B.
Lovely in the warm looking out over sea. Very friendly, nice girl served us.coffee was good. We walked down to check out boulders. Good we break from traveling.
V.
Nice place but not as cool as advertised. Just a few round rocks on the beach. This place is so famous just to atract people to have some coffe in near restaurant or to stay over night in near hotel. To see some really big round rocks you will have to go to North of North Island.
M.
Good place was open on public holiday also and have good service.
There can be more options in the menu though but food was tasty so overall a very nice experience l.
E.
Reasonable prices compared to other food prices in the area. Seafood chowder was rather floury. "Snapper special" was made out of pre breaded reconstructed fish cake type texture.
C.
Use the doc access tracks for free rather than using the private paid entrance 😁
B.
Not a bad little cafe, decent coffee and loads of parking. Easy to park a caravan or bus in there
C.
Well I've been to the south island 3 times and have to say once again this is still the best cafe I've been to.. we just called in and had lunch 2 weeks ago and had the seafood platter it was to die for.. the service and views and the walk is so awesome.. I rate this 10/10 and highly recommend it.. also viv in the gift shop go say hi lovely lady.. support them and buy some gifts for friends... we will see you next year again... kind regards colleen and butch from tutukaka holiday park
c.
What a wonderful world..
L.
Service was gd. Eggs were hard, plates cold. All of our group of 7 eggs were hard. Not ideal.
B.
We ordered the sea food platter to share and were amazed by the size and high quality of the meal. Top quality sea food mix and tasted awesome. 👍
S.
Awesome to know how the rocks/boulders were formed. However, too many tourist and taking a decent pictures without anyone in your background can be difficult. Try visiting during non peak hours.
S.
Nice boulders! Didn’t try the cafe, must be good, with international cricket teams stopping there, it has to be good.!
J.
A neat little geologic phenomenon. It's definitely worth a look if you're in the area, but I'm not sure I'd drive hours out of my way to see it. Some of the Boulders are partially submerged if the tide is too high. There cafe right at the carpark so you can get hot drinks to warm you up if it's chilly on the beach.
m.
Amazing ocean view while you relax in the cafe. Menu is delish and you can walk down to the boulders. Lots of parking for small to oversize vehicles and busses.
L.
Great place to walk to the boulders from easy paths unfortunately the cafe was shut
N.
Had to see them, been there done that.
J.
I like this cafe. However I was a bit disturbed this time round to find it not as welcoming as previous visits. They have a great cabinet of well presented and delicious looking sandwiches etc. I went to grab one to discover the cabinet securely secured with ties so the doors could not be opened. And yet plates, bags and trays were ontop of the cabinet. Next door cabinet is a different story - its help yourself with all the cakes, slices and muffins you could want. Why is this one not secured?
The roll down sheet of menu in the middle of the walkway - is both interesting and a nuisance blocking the way into the restaurant. Nothing really stood out on here on the day. I was looking forward to some juicy salmon but not to be. But good they change their menu. I opted for a croissant with spinach, salmon and cream cheese. Milk shake and a bowl of fries.
Got my wish of juicy salmon. The croissant was heated through. It was a good choice on the day. It also came with a small salad garnish - which complimented the whole plate. Well done. The side of fries were plentiful, hot and crisp. Slightly oversalted for my liking. And a pottle of tomato sauce. A very enjoyable meal.
Again, the bizarre - the toilet in the restaurant was locked off. Sign saying use the ones at the front - where the masses of coach loads go. Again didnt think this was welcoming especially for a paying customer. I did hear a female staff say she was going to open them but a male staff told her not too. Several other guests went towards the door only to be challenged by the sign.
Service on the day was good.
There is a good range of food on offer here - free range and locked behind a glass door.
There is plenty of parking out front. This is a tourist spot so heavy traffic and crowds of people. so plan your visit. There are tourist brochures on the wall as you enter. A souvenir gift shop opposite.
Inside and out side tables and chairs.
It is a good place to have lunch. You certainly can't complain about the view. My meal cost on the day under 20$
P.
Huge round shape stone scattered on the beach, must see spot near Dunedin
N.
Great cafe for a quick bite before walking down to see the Moeraki Boulders.
A.
We had our breakfast it was so 👍
C.
Lovely view of the beach from where you would be sitting at the café. Nice battered blue cod. 😊
D.
I love my blue cod and kumara fries.
b.
It’s a very good photo stop. Apart from that, there’s very little to do here.
A.
Love it love it love it. How could anyone not love it. Just a unique natural phenomenon. The Rock balls form in the ground from a natural process, the shore erodes away exposing them. They have sat in the sand being revealed by the sea. So cool to stand on... Just watch the incoming waves!! I got unintentional we feet!!!
h.
Good food and service.
L.
Good smoko to break the trip between Oamaru and Dunedin a must stop
t.
Well worth the nice drive out and good gift shop and cafe and clean toilets.😁🍷
T.
Extremely impressive! I don't know about the restaurant though, we were there outside of their hours.
The boulders are accessible at any time from the parking lot.
K.
Gluten free options here. And I'm drinking an almond decaf mochachinno. 👍😊
H.
Boulders are cool but it's a shame it costs a gold coin to get down to the beach. The money goes into caring for the path down to the beach which is really well maintained so that's cool.
E.
5 minute walk from the car park. You can either go down the private pathway and contribute $2 or use the public one. Both provide easy access. The public pathway provides a sign with some explanation of how they have been formed/created.
P.
DON'T follow the tourist trap sign on the left and just go straight to the normal Doc parking side when you come from the highway, walk 5 min more but saves you $2. Besides that interesting spherical stones.
A.
Really unsual rounds natural rocks with a well maintained path way. However it doesn't have weal chairs access. But it is a easy walk down to the beach.
M.
Great cafe! The menu has been pulled back due to corona bit the food and staff are fantastic. Easy 5 stars.
R.
Great food, spectacular views and very good service. Really enjoyed our visit.
A.
Fascinating natural formations. Delicious Cafe.
A.
Nice view and adorable coffee
P.
Nice venue to visit, Worth seeing the boulders. Aim for low tide as it will be easier, but we went at high tide and it was fine.
Restaurant is fine, simple food but good enough for lunch.
D.
A fascinating experience. I'm left with so many questions, though – how the heck did these spherical objects get here? Are they actually rocks, or the eggs of some long-forgotten giant reptile/alien? Why are they so round? And how do I get one to put in my future Hollywood mansion, when I'm a vacuous celebrity?
One tip, though: don't bother using the "private walkway" and paying the suggested $2 donation to the gift shop – there are public (free) access points further up and down the beach that are perfectly convenient.
d.
Beautiful. Great beach walk. Wondered where all the foreign tourists came from. Thought borders were closed
C.
Amazing. Must add to your bucket list
R.
Service and coffee were ok.
R.
They're boulders and they are on the beach. For a geologist it's probably amazing, for us nitwits they are just rocks. Still good for a picture or two, but personally they're not worth the 2 dollar coin p/p.
I.
Good trinket shopping, great blue cod & chips. Magic views. Crazy rocks. Check out Hampden beach just to north for broken open Moeraki boulders. Cool photos to get.
M.
Large servings. Good coffee. Has indoor and outdoor seating. A good range of food and drink. Does have vegetarian options.
K.
The restaurant cheekily expects a donation to view the boulders down on the beach. It's an honesty box screwed to a post so put a button or some Aussie coins in, and go look at the kinda cool boulders.
F.
A tourist stop above the famous Moeraki boulders. It has all you need if you want a coffee and a bite to eat before walking down to the beach below. There are views north and south of the beach and viewing decks where you can have a coffee. Watch out for the seagulls.
R.
Ordered big breakfast, cappuccino and orange juice. Paid NZ$40. Looked high price for breakfast. But you forget everything with one of the best view from restaurant, very testy food, fast service, smile and friendly people... Go to the beach just steps away from restaurant and touch world famous Moeraki boulders... enjoy your life. World is perfect! it’s look to me restaurant opening from 9am so late. I think this kind of restaurant must be open from sunrise time
V.
Wonderful scenery and fabulous food ... custard and lemon curd muffin ... mmm
G.
Beautiful and crazy to see. Short walk from the car park. There are a few broken Boulders but it is actually very interesting to see what the inside of the Boulder looks like. Out of this world.
J.
I have no idea why this is consider a tourist attraction. There are some round boulders on a nice looking beach, not much more than that. 2$ entry.
E.
Food n coffee was decent. Staff is friendly and there is free Wi-Fi. Clean toilets for diners. The only unpleasant experience was the attitude of the gift shop lady.
S.
We went to the little shop today. The woman at the till was outstanding. She happily talked to us,and explained everything
M.
A great place to take a load off, have an ice cream or coffee with a cake or even a meal. Friendly efficient service.
J.
Great but if you don't won't to pay staff don't open and charge 15% surcharge on public holidays
F.
I wasn't a fan of these small stones buried in the sand. And too many people taking pictures around them. Next time when drive by, I won't waste my time to stop at there.
C.
Only poked our nose in to get some change for the honesty box. Warm and smelt nice though!!
R.
Tide was in but still great to visit.
I.
Entry fee is $2 pp. You can see lots of rock on the beach. They are very circular. Some of them broken and you can see what inside the rock is like a jail. Quite special!
C.
I'm rating the boulders rather than the shop there... I can't comment on the shop as I didn't use it.
Nice little diversion for us traveling from Oamaru to Dunedin. $2 / person honesty box, well worth it for the upkeep of the access. Would be nice if there was some info on site as to the boulder formation... and Maori legend. Wikipedia says that they are concretions, built up layers around a central seed object. Cracks later in time occurred and were filled with calcite & dolomite.
W.
Excellent coffee and nice atmosphere
S.
What a wonderful place to have a cuppa. Wonderful service. Fantastic view.
M.
Good stop off on long drive from Christchurch to dunedin. Interesting boulders although looks like tide comes in long way so best viewed at low tide. Cafe/restaurant and shop at top by car park.
B.
Boulders are definitely worth a visit. Toilet facilities not great as there was only one unisex one, only usable if you were a cafe patron.
S.
Interesting. But disappointed to see tops of boulders worn away by tourists standing on them to pose for photos. Disrespectful and, over time, destructive of a unique landscape.
J.
Lovely place to stop. Great coffee and tea. Excellent service and staff.
P.
Fascinating place / excellent beach walking & plenty of boulders to see & "get up close & personal". Great fish restaurant as well.
M.
The boulders are amazing!
Its my 5th time visiting it
The breakfast/coffee were bad unfortunatly
I recommend having it at Oamaru (the Steampunk area have several great options
C.
Was later avo..no one around. But we got our coffee it was ok. Wonderful view out of all windows. Toilets werent clean altho wheelchair ok.
K.
Not a large scale tourist attraction but its cosy in size and enough for any traveller to appreciate. The broken boulders make for amazing photos.
D.
Cafe and gift shop, alongside a short walk to the beach and the boulders. Some nice places to sit and enjoy the ocean if you hang a left instead of walking directly down to the beach. :)
m.
Didn't go to cafe, just went to see the boulders, very cool and amazing
E.
Pretty neat if you're nearby, but I had the impression these things were much larger. They are perhaps 1.5 meters in diameter. Certainly cool formations but not worth the trip from a long distance.
A.
Don't pull into the retail place. You'll need to pay to access the beach. Drive just a bit further down to get free access. The rocks are just as close from that location.
G.
Very good meal, great service, menu meals were a little over the top price wise but a
good range and plenty of over the counter options. Great view on another beautiful Otago day.
G.
What a loverly spot I loved the cafe and the boulder beach.
Stunning views
R.
It has awesome view and mashroom pie is best at this place.
A.
Nice and friendly staff. You can buy food here to feed the Alpacas and Deer! Great Experience.
s.
Very interesting 👍
k.
Service great! Nice weather
C.
Well I've been to the south island 3 times and have to say once again this is still the best cafe I've been to.. we just called in and had lunch 2 weeks ago and had the seafood platter it was to die for.. the service and views and the walk …
l.
Spacious eating area with plenty of room for cooking as well, lovely young man at counter, helpful accommodating, friendly and informative. Not much for vegans though
L.
Service was gd. Eggs were hard, plates cold. All of our group of 7 eggs were hard. Not ideal.
D.
Really good pies and a great view from the deck
C.
Great spot, great omeletts, friendly staff & fantastic views.
L.
Some round rocks. I think if it wasn t that turistic it would have been a nice beach, but it s not a must do stop for me.
J.
Very pleasant spot with a great cafe nearby. Only downside is the large numbers of tourists that can turn up and make the place very busy!
M.
Amazing what nature can do. Well worth a stop and getting your feet wet. Have seen a few dolphins playing in the waves to add to the amazement
Y.
The food was great and the service was lovely. I will go back next time I am in the area.
V.
The boulders are very special and you cannot find in other place.
J.
Great food, huge servings, friendly staff.
A.
Awesome place to visit and if you enjoy an amazing breakfast then this is the place to stop.
C.
Awesome beach with large circle stone for additional attractions and also have coffee shop with overlooking view very recommended
H.
The food is tasty and fresh. Didn't expect from a restaurant near tourist attraction. Worth it to have lunch here before going to the beach.
N.
Good view and service.
J.
Order the small meals are huge.
M.
Every one should visit this place
A.
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and good value for money overall.
G.
Perfect location. Good food, my fish an chips were excellent. Well organized even when there are lots of customers.
J.
If it's on your way, worth a stop for a nice walk on the beach & a few pictures, but not necessarily worth going out of your way for. Was a bit more crowded than we expected.
S.
A bit crowded. The beach is nice and boulders are interesting. For a quick stop it's ok, but I wouldn't plan my day around it.
R.
Wonderful food. Very fresh Blue Cod. Great service. Enjoyed the experience. I'll be back to quote Arnie
M.
Wide range of options and reasonably priced. Great views especially if you can make it in time for the sunrise
J.
Interesting place and beach, but very touristy. The boulders are interesting and a must-see if you're into rocks.
D.
Great location. Nice friendly people. Good food
P.
It's big round rocks. Impressive for 30 seconds but a lot of them are broken and/or not really that round. It's an essential stop on the way through but don't budget a lot of time for it!
S.
Beautiful meal and awesome staff! Couldn't of been more helpful. Super speedy at getting our meal delivered with a smile
D.
Boulders are pretty average. Don't recommend the cafe, it's super expensive and they try to charge for the walk to the beach. Very greedy.
R.
These ancient bolders are easily accessible even at high tide. Great photo opportunities during both sunrise and sunset.
B.
Great stop over, couldn't find a lot of information regarding why the boulders are there. Nice restaurant and lovely friendly helpful staff.
M.
A beautiful day to visit the Moeraki Boulders on the beach. It was
unendated with visors such as ourselves . Made it near impossible to get a photo of just the Boulders without someone posing nearby....
W.
Alien stone here!
j.
An interesting location with a unique natural feature.
Excellent cafe/restaurant with souvenir shop.
Well worth the visit
張.
Great place to take photos, make sure you check the tides before you go!
C.
Cool boulders by the eastern cost of South island. A pity it’s so nice that they built a restaurant and gift shop nearby to cash in on the crowd.
K.
Very well set out great views.helpful staff .
T.
Cool place to take photos!
R.
Nice place. Go to outdoor to beach in the backyard or at least take pics. Many tourist buses. The place is a hidden gem.
B.
Great views from this cafe!!
d.
Moeraki boulders is such a nice location, it is the perfect place to take family photos and you will be fascinated by the spherical shaped rocks.
I.
Excellent cafe with lovely views along the beach, well worth visiting the boulders, incredible formations, never seen anything like it
C.
It's a nice place, but over-hyped for a beach with some boulders. Worth a stop, but wouldn't go much out of my way to visit.
E.
We did not visit the cafe . But the big round stones did not look very special
d.
It's a lot of cafe just for the sake of a few round rocks. Closed when I was there.
C.
The boulders were amazing but we should have taken warm jackets and looks like most the crowd were smarter than us about that.
G.
Great place to visit one of natures wonders. Weather however was cold, wet, and windy.
A.
Easy going place.
Menu a on display. With prices. Signs showing you to amenities.
G.
Not wheelchair friendly to see boulders...Restaurant was very busy...
S.
Nice views, friendly staff, really good, fresh, homemade food! 100% recommended
C.
Amazing lunch venue with a scenic view of the Pacific Ocean. Friendly and helpful staff. 6/5☆
M.
Beautiful restaurant with nice food and views along the coast towards the boulders.
E.
I visited today. It seems the cafe ownership has changed. The cod with chips and salad was very average and over priced.
A.
Its been a long time between boulder visits..but I'm sure they've got way smaller :(
H.
Great cuppa Great scone Great service.. Beautiful views of the bay ..
C.
Amazing place! And kids would be very happy to playing at the lovely beach.
E.
Awesome coffee , really good long blacks and lovely staff
J.
Wonderful sight but hard to appreciate history of place with tourists jumping all over them
M.
Had breakfast here. Was good. Good place to park for Moeraki Boulders
M.
Extremely busy but worth fighting the crowds. Very Amazing. Nature is Fascinating. You have to check this out.
A.
A unique natural feature, in the sea, the cafe is a bonus, just be sure to visit the boulders at low tide.
D.
Interesting combination of Capitalism and nature
D.
This place needs more vegetarian/vegan options to cater for all customers. Good customer service though.
m.
Great eggs benedict for breakfast followed by a nice stroll along the beach.
J.
It's easier to reach the place for Moeraki Boulders beach rather than the Moeraki Boulders public Carpark.
R.
A magical place where you can visit if you are near Dunedin. You have to search about the story of this place. It's incredible.
J.
Nice place to stop for a walk and rest if you want a break from driving. Good ocean view.
A.
Cool geologic phenomenon itself but pretty underwhelming when you visit. You could be just as satisfied with a picture on the internet.
E.
Nice stop way to Dunedin! It could be nicer if it was sunny but still we enjoyed a lot there:)
A.
Burger is great for only 20 bucks! Make sure to share it. It's huge!
E.
The place is very popular tourist attraction and could be crowded in a high season. But it is a very special and unique place, don't miss it.
B.
Great view
j.
Great service. Delicious salmon and cream cheese pie. Pastry was light and tasty.
d.
The boulders are cool to see....... souvenirs are ridiculous in price
T.
Friendly staff. Great place for fish and chips. Kids loved feeding the Alpacas.
G.

R.
It has awesome view and mashroom pie is best at this place.
N.
Good coffee, and very nice cheese scones ^_^
I.
Nice place to have a coffee or a bite to eat.
H.
Good plain food, able to host big groups.
A.
Nice food, often busy making parking a challenge during peak mealtimes as expected.
R.
Very quiet at the moment. Beautiful view over to Moeraki Town.
w.
Interesting, but takes a long walk on the beach to get to see the rocks, no toilets there.
V.
Good coffee and great food...the Blue Cod was delicious
P.
Both the coffee and the brownie were very good.
K.
Easy access.
Shop and cafe very well presented
D.
Beautiful short stop while driving but not as amazing as I expected. I reckon best to go at low tide of you can.
G.
Loved the feel of this cafe
.. Nice food
I.
Lovely spot for lunch and nice people.
I.
Great for photos but can get very.busy. shoulder season best for less people
L.
Beautiful spot to have a rest when traveling between dunedin and oamaru or even a trip from dunedin, great on a sunny day or even at sun set.
r.
Great food and good service great company
A.
Clean and tidy. The facilities are well maintained. The views and wall are gorgeous too

Interesting place to view. Pity about all the tourists climbing all over them for selfies.

Boulders defy explanation! Great to actually see and touch them.
t.
Awesome. All round.
