R.A nice place to have breakfast with friendly staff and food. The avocado on toast was OK (just sliced avocado instead of smashed avo) and the toast was just acceptable.
B.There were many options to eat breakfast that morning but I purposely chose one which was closer to University of Otago. This cafe was one street away from St David's Complex which houses lecture theatre, seminar rooms, a cafe and University Union... which was not there when I went back to Malaysia in the year 2000.
I chose this cafe before it was within walking distance, and its proximity to University of Otago - I parked my car at our accommodation and walked towards the cafe before continuing to the university campus. First impression was very good - the cafe boasts floor-to-ceiling glass allowing maximum natural lighting to light up the whole place. Friendly staffs made our visit welcomed and in no time the breakfast items were served in front of us. All of which tasted freshly made and perhaps it was the cold winter morning that got us famished.
Eggs Benedict, bacon, eggs and even wraps were those that we'd ordered.. and we could not find fault with all of the food. In the end, we walked out of the cafe happily and continued to my Alma mater.
N.Good good, good customer service, a great place to start your morning while in Dunedin. Highly recommended.

M.Great food at ok prices, pictured from top to bottom is the scrambled eggs, French toast, and the oaken breakfast.
Service was friendly, though given our 40ish minute wait there really needed to be a follow up check for additional drinks.
Upstairs acoustics are also pretty bad when it’s busy, noise echos and everyone talks louder as a result.
Would definitely go back, just maybe outside of the busier times.
R.A wee café close to University of Otago within the so called "fat lane" by the locals, Oaken is discretely positioned between a motel and a used book store. Despite its size, it has ample seatings on both ground and first level.
As always, the litmus test for a café is how they make their coffee, in this case the unpretentious Flat White. However, I can only provide 2 stars for the ordered beverage, as not only it took more than enough waiting time for a not-so-busy time of the day, it was also made to look like a cappuccino with more foam than the typical Flat White. An example of how a simple beverage in the hands of a supposedly skilled barista is failed on all corners. It tasted bitter and has slightly unpleasant after taste.
The only consolation is the very nice FOH lady who served the coffee and appropriately apologize for the time taken for waiting. Thus the added star. All in all, it would be my last time there.
A.Nice lunch at Oaken today. No fish, so it was a prawn curry instead. It was delicious, but I'd have preferred them to have taken off the prawn tails, which would have made it easier to eat. Have enjoyed many meals here. Yum.

Ç.I heard about Oaken last year, admittedly, I had a cliché syntax and semantics moment and crafted the belief in my mind that it was a woodcraft store!
Regardless, the other day, after relentless deliberation with a colleague we decided to go to Oaken for a coffee.
I must say, Oaken is in a very nice setting. The cafe itself is situated off a main road, however they have managed to stop the noise of traffic from drowning the inside of the store. The seating upstairs is a very nice touch and on a nice day it would be a splendid place to watch the iridescent light fill up the cafe.
The customer service is on par. The staff are friendly and welcome you as you enter the cafe. They also enjoy conversation and exude enthusiasm.
My colleague and I both ordered a flat white. My only improvement would be to feedback that the waitress split my coffee on my saucer, this is something that really annoys me. However, I appreciate that mistakes happen, and the quality of the coffee made up for this fault.
Overall, I was delighted by Oaken. I have already been back two times, I am sure that my presence will not be omitted for long!
Y.Really nice atmosphere upstairs, nice place to catch up with mates. Brownie was rich and hot choco was good. You also get a complementary mini cookie instead of the usual marshmallow.
J.Oaken is lovely, they always have nice salads and a nice variety of food. They cater to a lot of allergies/intolerances. They have the best cookie ever, would definitely recommend. It is nice to order a coffee and sit upstairs and enjoy the view, or lunch with friends.

A.Best cookies and muffins in town. The coffee was fairly good too, except they didn't let me know their chai was already sweet when I requested extra sugar. Their Afghan's are a must try. The ambiance was good and the place being small felt cozy and cheerful. Staff is very friendly too. Would surely go there next time I am in Dunedin.

V.Stayed a few weeks in Dunedin and had most of my breakfasts in Oaken cafe, foods and coffee are very good, I liked the pancake and homemade cookies. Services are exceptional.
L.There is always a friendly welcome at Oaken, which makes you feel more like you have just been invited into someone's stylie kitchen than a cafe. The food selection is tasty and has something for everyone. My personal faves are the salads as a quick, light go-to. You can eat in or takeaway and the coffee is good!
H.Nice Cafe with yum cabinet food. The menu looks good too. The outside tables are so good on a hot day and the upstairs level creates some shelter from the sun. Up stairs overlooks the busy great king Street so you can watch the world go by while keeping warm inside too.

Das OAKEN Café gleich neben dem Great King Motel ist ein Ort zum Entspannen. Es gibt hier einen hervorragenden Kaffee und viel liebevoll gefertigtes Gebäck in einem ansprechenden Ambiente.
Alle Gerichte sind mit frischen und phantasievoll ausgewählten Zutaten zubereitet – alles hat irgendwie etwas Besonderes.
Natürlich gibt es hier auch Herzhaftes wie Eier mit Speck, Omelette, Eier Benedikt, Burritos, Sandwiches und vieles mehr.
Ich habe auf Grund der Temperaturen mein Frühstück im Innenbereich oben geordert, der Service war sehr freundlich und alle Speisen und Getränke kamen schnell auf den Tisch.
Für den Weg habe ich mir noch etwas Kuchen mitgenommen – er sah einfach zu lecker aus.
