Reviews of The Fishwife
V.
We did a day trip Drive from Christchurch to specifically try The Fishwife and it was worth the drive!
We arrived at 12pm and there were crowds of people down by the wharf where The Fishwife was. Fantastic setting! Our order was 3 Blue Cod, 1 grilled Crayfish, and 1 scoop of chips. This was the freshest, most delicious Blue Cod We have EVER tasted ... who knew it could be this good!? The chips were of a very generous portion and golden crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The Crayfish was perfect.
We noted most people had ordered Blue Cod and Crayfish. The Fishwife has an area overlooking the wharf where you can eat. They supply napkins and tomato sauce.
We will definitely come again.
R.
Delicious baked crayfish! The fish and chips was good too. The batter on the fish was thin and crispy. The fish was fresh too. There's a few tables to stand around to eat and one picnic bench. Best to takeaway if you have little children as it will get quite hard to eat the crayfish there standing while trying to mind the children. Plus it gets quite crowded as many people know about this place.
L.
Just fantastic service. Best fish and chips with crayfish!
Went there again for more servings of crayfish and chips, all worth it! Bring your friends for an ultimate roadtrip next time!
D.
Perfect way to have your fish n chips...right over the water. Nothing fancy, nothing pretentious just good old honest fish n chips cooked just right. Blue Cod and a half scoop for only $13.50...generous portions and the staff and service were top notch!
A.
We ate here on Good Friday. We had a choice of Blue Cod caught on the day, I think Hapuka caught the day before, crayfish and a few more options. We chose cod as a treat and were not disappointed. The fillet was full size, top and bottom side of the fillet together. I ordered 1 more than we had people, but due to the size we didn't need it. It was so fresh it reheated well the next day. The chips were generous and hard to fault. They provide complimentry chicken salt, tomato sauce and a jug of tartare. For me, the best Blue Cod ever was at Oban on Rakiura, now I'm not so sure.
Mrs O is a 3rd gen fisho, she rated it highly too. We also tried a paua fritter. It's a meal by itself. Very tasty, fresh, great textures. The paua was from the Chathams.
This was not a cheap meal, I'm not sure whether there was a holiday surcharge, but given the first class fish it's still good value.
We ate under cover during a nice sunset. No dress code, I was in my gummies.

Best fish & chips I’ve had both in ages and in South Island. Bare bones operation but lovely location. Owner is super friendly and up for a chat. Make sure to pet the adorable pug! Great food, views, and doggo. What’s not to love.
A.
The best giant crayfish I've ever had plus the lovely people who's cooking your delicious goody! I have been here a couple of times and I can say that it is one of my favorite places to satisfy my seafood cravings!!! Another thing is they serve Pāua as well!!! Wuhoo! Thanks guys keep up the good work!
K.
This is the first place we take visitors from our of town because they do the best fish and chips we have ever had in any part of NZ or overseas. The blue cod is the freshest imaginable and you can often watch as the fishing boat pulls up to the adjoining wharf and unloads it directly into the restaurant kitchen. The crayfish is also succulent and flavourful, especially when grilled with garlic butter. The chips are always cooked to perfection and it's the old fashioned scoop size which is really generous. There is a frequently rotating menu of tasty cabinet foods too, including salads and baking. We've tried many of these and they have always been delicious.
Ambience is 10/10 - a very cool spot with a great view and a cool octopus mural. Beautiful on a sunny day and just as lovely, though in a different way, when the weather is terrible.
Even though they're open air, they are super onto it with vaccine passes, scanning as you order at the counter.
A.
The place looked pretty crowded when we drove up but after ordering and a short wait, the fish turned out tasty, with a firm flesh [=fresh]. We had cod and grouper. The paua was made into a burger or patty, not how Asians would expect abalone to be served, but hey this is NZ! The mural art is also a photo opp.
R.
Beautiful fresh fish. Lovely crisp batter. Great chips. Huge portions and amazingly friendly service! People have raved about the Fishwife to me for ages... now I know why!
m.
Brilliant service, brilliant location, its always a welcomed stop if I'm in the near moraki and a decent fish and chips is hard to find. Gorgeously cooked fresh blue cod and chips and a lovely pauna pattie (my first one ) service was brilliant, lovely and cheery even with a number of other orders it was prompt and perfectly cooked 10 out of 10
P.
Awesome place to get fish n chips, blue cod, groper, crayfish etc and great tasting...visited many a time for just the crayfish, love it...no one else compares as far as I'm concerned 😃😃
A.
Had grilled crayfish and chips. Was great! Easy-going and friendly place. A gem in Moeraki
w.
Was a great view and very great taste. It was my first time to visit this place and loved it.
L.
Loved our meal at the Fishwife...Best fish and chips we have had in a long time, great staff, great services and dining views to die for ❤
R.
Had the most amazing, perfectly cooked here. Lovely and friendly
S.
Best crayfish I have ever eaten. Amazing pricing. I'm from Auckland but would genuinely consider flying back down just to taste this again haha.
s.
Amazing little shop, located at the moeraki boulders village. Easy ordering with only a few options but more than enough, choose either fish (cod or sole) and chips or Cray (half or whole) and chips. Standing tables, no table services, call out when your order is ready. Cook to order. Crayfish is super fresh you can still taste the sea. Super friendly and attentive staff, extremely helpful. We had a whole crayfish, cod and some chips for lunch and took home 2 whole crayfish. We will definitely be back everytime traveling down south from now on! Thank you for setting up such a lovely and heartwarming business. Highly recommend.
A.
Very good one. Better and cheaper than kaikoura. Really love it. Suitable for Muslims too. All seafood
i.
Make sure you stop here for a meal.
Delicious lobster & Cod fish.
One of the best if not the best. The fish is so fresh that I don’t think I’ve ever had any bettered fish like this ever.
Very reasonable price.
Ordered : large whole lobster $60 + Cod fish $12 (absolutely worth it) and half chip $2.5
Previously been to Haast Jackson bay Craypot for the famous lobster lunch. The Fishwife is way better.
C.
Fresh crayfish and paua... the fishes are also good! Highly recommended when you visit Moetaki.
M.
Have to travel from Christchurch to Moeraki to eat fish and chips ♥️🥰 - the best fish and chips - ever.
D.
Amazing food and service. Highly recommended. Put this on your to do list. Friendly staff and locals. Will definitely be going back.
T.
The best fish and chips in NZ. We stop here whenever we drive up/down the coast.
Try their rice-quinoa-chilli-peanut salad as well! What a delicious surprise at a fish and chip chop.
L.
Such a pleasant surprise- drove all the way from Dunedin as it was recommended by a bunch of people and was great. Weather you’re a local or a tourist, so worth trying. Lovely staff and owner, great views, great food. Such great service, we will be back and make sure to spread the word 🤗
J.
Beautiful placed, great view and the Crayfish was absolutely beautiful. Would highly recommend.
M.
We rocked up at 11am on Friday, hoping they would be open....and they were.
Words fail to accurately describe the at the amazing food, service & ambience of this place.
One of our group is gluten free and he was beyond estatic to eat commercial fish and chips that are gluten free after nearly 16yrs.
We chose fresh cod & chips. Ohhhhhhhh myyyyyyyy! BEST IN NZ 🤗 Served individually in a wee cardboard box with aoli & a wedge of lemon. Tomato sauce & vinegar are in serve yourself bottles along with grind your own salt and pepper shakers.
The view from our table over the bay watching the seals & fisherman returning is the perfect place to eat. Quintessential beachy NZ at it's best.
T.
Crayfishes and bluecod are fresh, reasonable price. We will definitely back again to try other fishes.
J.
Hidden gem in the heart of Moeraki, delicious and fresh fish and chips that comes with an awesome view of the bay. Crayfish that is not only nice and juicy, but for the best price we’ve had so far (would be great if it comes with slice of lemon though;)! Friendly and fast service. Tried the Paua fritter and wasn’t big fan of it, but this might be my personal taste. Will come back for more Crayfish and Blue Cod! Thanks for this amazing place 🤙🏽
D.
Best fish ever, so fresh, beautifully cooked. Would recommend everyone goes there when in the area.
H.
South Island gem in term of fast food dish. Crayfish was pan fried in butter and garlic (yumm!) and gurnard was neat! Big portion fries accompanied seafood! Un régal !
Oh and they offer you a Seagull repellent if needed :D. Highly recommended!
C.
Unbelievably good!!
The paua fritter was exceptional, crayfish simply perfect. Mean az lolly cake and slice too!
But the blue cod was worth the drive, fresh as!
Lovely people.
B.
A great fish n chip eatery located strategically at the fishing wharf of the Moaraki Village, stunning view and great choice of food. Just need improvement on the chips
T.
Can’t go wrong with half a fresh crayfish and a huge portion of chunky chips for lunch on the wharf, top notch and good coffee too
B.
We happened upon this place while on the way to the boulders and I still fantasize about their blue cod and chips. It might be the best fish and chips I've ever had. We ate overlooking the beautiful harbour. Highly highly recommended and utterly delicious.
M.
Loved the blue cod and chips. Plus a great place next to the water.
L.
Blue Cod was delicious as per usual. Ordered two lots of chips but would only need one for two people as servings are generous.

Outstanding, fresher than fresh straight off the boat. Crisp scrumptious batter and lip luscious chips 🍟 😋 Sat in the sun on the outside table and soaked in the atmosphere of luxurious New Zealand on a wonderful Spring day 😀 Nicci and her off sider were wonderful, customer service skills on a professional level that only can be found in small towns new 😀 Absolutely stop here, well worth going out of your way to make the trip, it's a destination in its own right.

OMG I only want lobster and chips for every meal now from Fishwife. To sit on a rock and watch the fishing boats. A dog friendly, people friendly gorgeous, affordable place for a really delicious and delightful trip out of Dunedin. Watch the sparkly sea and occasional sea lion. And best of all for us ex pats....lashings of malt vinegar if you like that!
A.
Brilliant take out, or picnic nearby.

Wow!!! We stopped last night to try the fish and chips, so glad we did! Best Blue Cod I've ever had, so delicious and lovely batter with yummy chips. Fantastic service, really lovely people who gave us an amazing bonus of brownies and some succulent crayfish - felt like we'd won the lottery! Highly recommend and well worth the detour off the main road!!
W.
Drove almost 3 and a half hours one way to get crayfish and blue cod. Worth it!!
M.
best fish&chips i have ever eaten in 15 ans of living in new zealand 🌟
C.
Definitely a turn - off - the - main- road-go-to!!!! A feast not easily forgotten. Teeth tiptoeing through the crispy batter, to reach the soft delicate flesh of the blue cod, then, melting over the tongue. Fish and chips of the highest calibre., a gastronomic deeelight......
J.
Well cooked, good proportion size. Best fish and chips in Waitaki.
L.
Wonderful friendly service. Blue cod & Sole melted in our mouth. Thanks
G.
Always a 5. Load fish straight off their boat right out in front filleting there and then straight in the fryer. Awesome staff and beautiful spot. Can't recommend highly enough. You could have a bunch of fine dining experiences that wouldn't even come close to how good this is. Lots of crayfish, paua fritters and blue cod
P.
Great crayfish and blue cod but soggy chips.room for improvement
T.
A heaven on earth. They are very friendly and have incredibly high standards when it comes to delivering some of the best fried cod you'll find. The chips are big and satisfying and the crayfish is perfect. Also they have fantastic slices and serve soft serve icecream as well as a variety of drinks. Highly recommend.
B.
There's one word to describe The Fishwife - Outstanding. From the customer service to the fresh melt in your mouth Blue Cod, The Fishwife is one place you need to go.
W.
What a fabulous place, my husband was looking forward to some crayfish, when he arrived, rather late in the day , they had sold out. But they managed to sort something out for him, . It was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly.
H.

G.

Z.
Great service. Good people. You know the food is good when you can enjoy it underneath an old bridge to shelter from the rain.
Insider's note: The crayfish is served cold and so it's best eaten with the freshly cooked chips or fish.
J.
Great gurnard fish - will be back!
g.
I would have to say the crayfish and chips outshine Kaikoura by 100%!! A delicious delicacy moist , succulent and the chips to die for, plus less than half of what we paid for in Kaikoura , and this was bigger !unbelievable value. We will be taking one with us when we head to Dunedin on our travels, well done The Fishwife ¹
R.

G.
My original review still stands - read below for that. However for everyone else. Especially the "too long, didn't read" crowd here's my succinct summary.
Stay Away! This place is the worst!
Nobody goes here anymore - its too crowded.
It's just so crowded now that I can't actually get my blue cod fish and chips anymore. Everytime I go it's got a queue for parking and ordering and eating. So do yourself (and me) a big favour and leave all that madness behind. Go to Hampden instead and leave this place, for me and the other North Otago locals to enjoy again. Thank you.
Now original review resumes:
Best blue cod and chips I've had in a very long time. You can also order crayfish - whole or just a half - when in season - with or without the chips or garlic butter.
They also sell wonderfully fresh chocolate brownies and Rocky Road at times. Plus they have fresh coffee available. They also sell filleted/packaged fish you can take home most days (If not all sold out.) for a better price and freshness than most other outlets.
Its not open every day, currently mostly weekends and Xmas holidays. But worth a stop when you're passing by or anytime you want some old school (like you used to get) "fish and chips" as direct as possible from the fisherfolk who caught the fish. How it was before the red tape and paperwork made it too hard for most places to do this.
S.
Loved the fresh blue cod. Great view
K.
Yummy cod & chips, perfect outlook
P.
So, so happy I stopped and checked their board. Just had 1/2 a crayfish and chips for $22.50. Standing looking out over the marina while eating. Top notch, and fresh. Yum.
M.

Not a well known place to tourists or people outside the area but what a little gem. If sea good is something you enjoy well then you will Lick your fingers and come back for more as you will Not be able to get enough.
p.
