D.The pie I brought was full of meat and mushrooms, was an exceptional pie. Would highly recommend stopping here for coffee and cake as have a wonderful selection amongst other delicious delights. AAA+++
J.Great pies, just get in early (before 12, but ideally before 11am) otherwise you will miss out on the mince and cheese and steak and cheese or other popular flavours. No picture because that pie was on its way into my mouth soon as I put it down on the table 🤣
The baking also looks awesome but one pie is enough for me!!
K.We both ordered the steak, cheese and bacon pie... Oh my word, the chunks of steak and bacon were generous, we could definitely taste the cheese and there was just the right amount of gravey. The pastry was light and flakey...... It was a winner and well worth stopping off at.

M.This hidden gem was recommended by Moeraki locals. Never knew Moeraki is famous for its seafood. Ordered the paua (abalone) pie and beef and oyster pie and they were amazing. The pastry was light and buttery, the paua was cooked perfectly. Such a bargain for under $8 a pie that's full of paua inside.
The americano coffee was really good too. Highly recommended.

And it was definitely worth it!!
We ordered the Coffee walnut slice which was very tasty.
I had the Tea - loose leafs lemon & ginger. Big portion (2.5 cups of tea).
My friends had long black and short black. The long black is served as a short one and they bring hot water so you can decide how strong you want it! My friends loved it!!
The interior is quite funky.

This is a great place to stop for lunch on the way from Oamaru to Dunedin - several people had recommended this and we can see why. The coffee was very good and the pies were just sensational - delicious filling and beautiful home made pastry. The staff were very friendly and it was great to sit outside in the lovely garden.

P.We always stop here, great food for giants and anyone who's hungry. The best hot choc ever. My sister got eggs Benedict with bacon and I had the seafood chowder so so good we were so full but we took away some of vanessa's famous pies and fudge. We'll be back. 👍👍👍👍

Situated on the side of the road in a little town called Hampden, there's nothing unusual about the little cottage apart from the banner flapping in the wind proclaiming, "Vanessa's Cafe."
There's a few picnic tables scattered around the front lawn but the magic of small town hospitality is found within the yellow cottage.
You're greeted with an appetising food cabinet and polite, friendly staff happy to take your order. Coffee is delicious and hot, and the "must order" fish and chips is massive and yet will not make you feel as though you've ingested half the oil in the deep fryer with your meal.
Meals are also served promptly and still hot which is a must on a cold, wet day like today.
Prices tend to be on the more expensive side but for what you get, this is definitely worth it.
5 stars, and happy to drop by anytime I'm on State Highway 1.
T.Unbelievably great coffee & everything was made in their kitchen. There were huge muffins, pies (Had to buy the paua pie & oyster pie) delicious & yum! Along with also large vegetable frittata and lots of other amazing looking food choices. Super friendly & a must call in on your way south. I’m sorry Oamaru but wait till Hampton and stop in here. Will be back. Thank you 👌🏻😊👏🏻

H.Vanessa's is one of the best cafes on New Zealand's State HIghway 1. Big call, I know. But the service is excellent - Vanessa is a gem, and the pies are out of the ordinary. I love the paua pie, and the lamb's fry and bacon. Buttery flaky pastry filled up tie gunwhales with tasty chunks and surrounded by thick gravy. The welcome is always warm, and Vanessa always smiling. Get in quick in the day to secure your favourite pie!

C.Vanessas Cottage Cafe is a awesome cafe. It has great pies all sorts of combinations like bacon steak and cheese. I had a steak one and the pieces of beef were very big and they were extremely nice. We also had a peach and passion fruit muffin. Great coffee too. We sat outside and was nice watching the traffic go by, however lots of people stopped to go into Cafe. I would definitely go there again.🙂

N.My daughter has lived in Dunedin for the last few years, I visit 6-7 times a year. To give you an idea of how good the food actually is, l not only time my trips so I'm in the vicinity at a justifiable mealtime, and make sure I'm good and hungry l also buy some for the next day. Never had food or service that that wasn't excellent. Pointless to recommend something but if you want their full selection of homemade pies get there before 11.30am.

Ç.Fantastic place! a truly hidden gem on your drive down to Dunedin. We stopped here after a delightful weekend trip to Mt Cook, this cafe was a true compliment to the trip. The indoor environment has been well decorated and exudes sophistication. Furthermore, the wonderful decorations were a delight to admire whilst drinking my coffee, which I must say was nicely made. The customer service was stupendous, my friends and I were made to feel very welcome. Overall a lovely cafe.

We had breakfast there after staying at a nearby campground. The portions were quite large and the quality was very good. My wife had the pancakes and I had bacon and egg. We were both full when we had finished.
We also bought two huge muffins to have later in the day which were also very good.
K.Very pleasant cafe with lovely food. Well worth stopping at. Had a melt in the mouth Lamb Shank with mash etc. 10/10! Everything else looked just as good. Look forward to trying fish and seafood chowder next time. Also nice clean toilets.

D.What a delight to find this cafe on the side of State Highway 1. No detours or going off the main road to find it. I only had coffee to go, but it was a GOOD coffee and I was able to stretch my legs by looking around The Hidden Herbery at the rear of the cafe. Great place to stop if you want to keep going.

Popular with a never ending stream of travellers and well to do who have breezed in to experience treats from a wonderfully home made menu from everything to the crunchiest and buttery honey crumpets to absolutely delicious seafood chowder using nearby bluff oysters. The coffee is excellent and expect the barista to bring you your coffee out in the front garden. Beautiful tables set amongst gorgeous flowers and greenery. At the back make sure you visit Rick in his serene and surprising herbery. A lovely selection of all herbs, greens, flowers and veg. Mouth watering. Be sure to ask about the oyster plant! If you love oysters....This darling surprise package I rate 10 out of 5!
