Beautiful meals, huge improvement on my last experience here . Menu was great lots of variety with good quality local and seasonal ingredients. Staff were friendly . Cafe itself was a but echoey and the music was too loud to be enjoyable while trying to chat with friends . I had the eggs Benedict with pork belly and it was faultless! Can’t wait to try some more menu items

This institution use to be our regular back in the day when we use to work in town. Seems it has only gotten better. Delicious strong coffees with scrumptious bagels perfectly balanced between kraut salmon and cream cheese. Another pride of Dunedin's hospitality scene.

Great new menu. The French toast is without equal anywhere in the city. And still Dunedin’s best coffee

Good place to go for a cuppa or a meal. Met a friend for morning tea. Would go back again and have a meal, the food looked great.

One of the best coffee shops in NZ. The coffee is excellent. I had barista breakfast - espresso, flat white and filter coffee. Amazing! Also bought their coffee to take home. They grinded it for my French press. The full breakfast was with a nice touch as it is a little bit different from usual but keeping the main ingredients consistent - like perfect scrambled egg. Thank you for great hospitality as they still do table service. Will be definitely beck when in Dunedin.

I love the young man who serves at the counter. Amazing caring interaction service. I also really enjoyed talking to the man making the coffees this Sunday morning. What a wonderful team flying around between people n coffees to offer an amazing quick service.

Awesome café on Princes Street just south of The Exchange. The room is great, light and airy with high ceilings, the staff are super-friendly, the coffee is awesome (roasted in-house) and the food is just delectable. The Akaroa Salmon Latkes and the Big Breakfast are my personal favourites but it's hard to go wrong with a menu this good.

Had a fritatta which was nice. Had potato plus some sort of green vegetable in it plus a cream cheese centre. The side roast Vege salad was quite nice too. The music was quite loud.

Coffee & food are both great!!! One thing I appreciate most is : Even they are very very busy, the food & coffee always arrives at a timely manner. So I don't have to worry even I am in a hurry or hungry I know I don't have to wait long. Great management well done

Really good black coffee, didn’t try anything with milk. Caramel slice was divine, and complimented the black coffee really well. Friendly staff, great atmosphere, would definitely recommend and return

Delicious food and exquisite coffee (Filtered Colombian). Really nice place to dine, with great staff and upbeat vibe.

I like that they don't just have different coffees but they also offer different brewing methods. I tried alfa, it was okay. But I got an Americano, and you don't necessarily get the best taste this way. The coffee came with water next to it as it supposed to be, to adjust it to your taste. Lemon cake wasn't too sweat which I liked. Art work on the wall was very good and the grafitti view (phlegm, I love their work) was a nice surprise. Their coffee was the weakest point.

Very roomy inside, plenty of seating. Had fantastic sausage roll, homemade pastry. However the cake I had was raw in the middle, not what I expected after the sausage roll. Would otherwise be 4 stars.

Great coffee, good food w nice groove, first time I came 45min before closing and staff appeared a bit tired so no smiles, all empty tables were dirty and toilets closed for cleaning but I’ll come again when I’m next in town. Came a year later for second time and had better service and again great coffee, great food and still the same nice groove.

I've got nothing against sourdough persay...but if you're going to serve it under a heap of other food please give me a good knife to cut it with 😩 Coffee was average and the food was cooked and served well, but lacked flavour. Disappointing start to a Sunday when there are half dozen other places I could have chosen to go. Staff friendly and food came quickly though. Good of you're in a hurry maybe ?

Cabinet food is great, coffee too, and reasonable pace of service. A great vibe in the up and coming warehouse area South of the Octagon. Stripped down and minimal style fits the mood

Perhaps I accept invitations to present at conferences in stunning, wild Otago just to have perfect breakfast at Vanguard in downtown Dunedin! Plants everywhere, a case full of colourful treats and foliage that one wants to eat all day, ingredients sourced from biodynamic producers, and as is promised, very nice coffee. And it is so peaceful. Do it, come to Dunedin for breakfast and stay for a conference. 🍀👩🏼‍🎓🦉

Stopped in for breakfast. Service was super friendly and fast. We had our coffee real quick and we're given a bit more time to peruse the menu with no pressure to hurry. Food came quick as was delicious. Generous portions too. Plenty of space inside and it's all neat and clean. Cabinet food looked gorgeous. Might have to come back for a sweet treat sometime soon!Brilliant cafe.

I love this place. Don't ask me why as can't put a finger on it. Great coffee, cakes, food and nice outlook out the rear windows. That must be why I like it!

A large and busy cafe near Octagon which is good for business meetings.

They have excellent soup and bread. Very fresh. That's all I've ordered there (twice). They're also friendly. Sorry to be so inexact but the place just has a good vibe from staff and customers. I have recently started working one block away and I know I'll go back much more often now I'm so close each day. Parking is reasonably easy unlike closer to the hospital, and the demographic is adults.

Great coffee and delicious food. The new Turkish Eggs dish was superb. Highly recommended.

Vanguard is a relaxed cafe with lots of seating options and views of local streetart. It also has one of the best green smoothies in town!

Kind and humble, so lovely, (and honestly, exceptional) staff. I don't know if it's the way they brew their coffee, or the love and other magical things they put into it, but the coffee is probably the best I've had, ever. Additionally, the food and music is just as fantastic. It's easy to tell that the staff cook and brew with great love, and a humble professional skill. Excellent place to go for coffee and breakfast if you want to start the day with some morning goodness, and just as suited for an afternoon catch-up with friends or family. Such a cool place.

Fantastic cafe with friendly staff, delicious selection of food for all different dietary types and warm sunny location. It's always buzzing in here but still easy to sit with a friend and have a catch up or sit quietly and do some work while enjoying their awesome coffee made with their own coffee blends which are ground on site.

Always good but the food and drinks seem to have temperature issues - depending on the staff serving. Today we had to return all our "heated" scones because they are cold and our hot drinks were only lukewarm 😕

Food is great. Quite noisy, and they do add a Public Holiday surcharge. Why don't they cover the extra costs of 11 public holidays by increasing their prices by 3% averaged over the whole year?

Breakfast was pretty tasty. Coffee was okay but super hot and nothing too exciting. Expected more quality, and less attitude from a specialty coffee venue. Had a very heavy vibe of coffee pretentiousness. No greeting, thank yous or goodbyes of any sort to us or any of the customers that came and went while we were there.

Nice place, close to the CBD. Good open space, really good natural light. Service is what you would expect, welcoming etc. The seating is nice. Higher tables if you like bench style with bar stools. A good selection of food.

But taken aback that a specialist coffee cafe didn't know what a pour-over was. They did, however give me a delicious 'filter' coffee, and a great breakfast.

Fantastic coffee if served by the lovely that looks like Brian May's illegitimate child. Not the greatest setting for a social meeting, given the open noisy design of the cafe. Food is certainly worth the coin.

Nice Bistotti and well made single shot latte we had this morning. Nice atmosphere, lovely friendly service. Sometimes a bit cold in winter, but normally just warm enough.

Really good sweet and savory scrolls. Wanted to try more things but was too full to keep going! Absolutely amazing food so far though. Good meeting place as well.

Little bit pricy for a coffee, but they know their stuff and I don't mind paying extra for the extra mile these guys go. Really loved that my long black had the hot water separate, because I actually like a 'medium' black and a bit of cold water in it, but don't want to be one of those annoying customers. The tasting cards and origin info was super interesting. Really cool new york/industrial vibes. Highly recommended.

A favourite place in Dunedin. A great selection of good, and amazing muffins and cinnamon rolls. They are serious about coffee and the atmosphere is welcoming, modern and agreeable.

Bloody good food. Coffee roasted on-site and the baristas know what they're doing. Decor is great with shared long tables or more intimate settings at the back. Always bustling, but service is prompt and friendly.

Awesome cafe with a great cabinet selection of sweet and savoury. They clearly take their coffee seriously, you can also pick up supplies like beans and V60 filters.

Coffee was delicious and fresh bakery every morning. The place is great, with street art all around and different art pieces on the wall. It’s a shame that they don’t have wifi though, so not ideal for freelancers. 👩🏼‍💻

Very busy place but nice food and coffee. It is nearly impossible to get a private table as there are few. Most seating options are along benches shared by other patrons, and it has a slightly cramped use of space. Service was slow when we visited and some staff appeared slightly stressed in their interaction with customers. Bathrooms were basic but clean.

Great coffee and the most amazing red velvet pancakes

Flat white was good, cinnamon brioche was light and not too sweet. However they mixed up our takeaway order even after I asked if they had included the savoury roll. The waitress insisted she had the order correct before we left so they must have mixed up someone else's order too. Amateur..

The eggs Benedict was absolutely fabulous. The herb infused hollandaise sauce is something I've never tasted, it was superb. The mushrooms have a burst of flavour and the bacon was unexpectedly intense of flavour but not disappointing. The coffee was heated perfectly with silky milk froth. 1 star penalty for the lack of free Wi-Fi, as it should be a minimum in such a funky coffee shop.

Food was fantastic, hot english tea was cool, my partner's coffee was cool, would have been 5 star's but cool tea is not nice.

Fantastic coffee, but the staff clearly weren't awake enough in the morning to utter so much as a few grunts, or be motivated to get a move on. Slowest coffee to make in the South Island, but still one of the nicest.

Great soy flat white. A little too much cayenne for me in the otherwise delicious cheese scone. Service slow at 11.40am.

Loads of cabinet options. Good eggs Benedict and coffee. Probably my favourite coffee place in dunners. My capp actually had foam which quite a few cafes skimp on.

Food drastically overpriced compared to competition within walking distance, however they serve the best coffee in dunedin and have an awesome setting to start your morning in so still highly recommend.

Disappointed we didn't buy more coffee beans from here. They were roasted perfectly and when we ran out later in our holiday, we had to buy beans from elsewhere that were nowhere near as good.

Coffee ok but food can be expensive and they heat everything in the microwave so don't ask for your sausage roll to be heated up as you will get an oily unpallatble mess.

(Translated) flatwhite was delicious. The clerk is friendly and cute. Cinnamon Danish is normal As the image. The chocolate cake is very sweet I took it home without eating.
