What an awesome tasty feed! If you're stuck for lunch in the relative middle of nowhere I'd highly recommend the little detour to stop off here. Friendly staff and a cruise vibe. And the fried chicken is delicious, not to mention the amazing hot sauce selection!

Wow, this chicken and waffles was absolutely delicious! Best I’ve ever had, the thin and crispy slices of bacon, the fluffy waffle and maple syrup, and the crunchy and juicy chicken tenders was all amazing! 5 out of 5, would definitely recommend this dish!

Super friendly staff, fabulous atmosphere and great coffee (my mocha was delish) in the centre of town. Comfy indoor and outdoor seating options. They also sell wine, beer and cider and a large assortment of iced drinks. Don't miss this place!

Best burger ever! Went after being recommended by a friend and would happily take the 1.5 hour drive to go back there. The pork belly was beautifully cooked. Chicken was seasoned to perfection.

Great cafe in Geraldine! Love the style. Food was great and staff were lovely. I had the fried chicken with mashed potato and gravy on top. The chicken was moist and the crust was nicely seasoned. Chips were well cooked. The gravy on mashed potato is very nice also. Worth a stop if you’re passing through on your road trip :)

Three stars for the place, ambience and nice coffee, but that not all the things that makes a cafe a nice cafe. FOOD is where it missed out. I tried my usual favourite Eggs Bene with bacon. The eggs were as good as boiled eggs instead of poached eggs. I have added a picture for reference. Other than this the hollandaise was fresh.

Therefore, the Running Duck Cafe is the coolest cafe in the universe, QED. So come for the great coffee (served with a jaffa) and the superb food, and stay for the super groovy decor and retro memorabilia. For those keen on flagellation, you can stock up on hot sauces from Al’s Laboratory. They have some great merch for sale too. Try one of their signature burgers, their delicious range of Not Burgers, and don’t forget to sample one of the craft beers in the fridge. Kiwi batch living never looked so good or tasted so great. Oh…and don’t forget to check out the toilet which is decorated with old record sleeves and topo maps. Like I said: the coolest cafe in the Universe!

Morning Glory Burger was simply JUICY! The soup was a bit more watery than what we usually look for but the taste was still great. The service is exceptional and the chocolate fudge is strong and delicious for Choco crazies like my wife 😂

Food was awesome. Fish and chips were top notch! Also tried the Lemon Ginger Honey Tea and it was definitely a comforting drink for a rainy day. Food potion was also huge so we had to share a main. Would come back to this cafe again in a heartbeat!

Such a cute little place! So many little querks.. I had the lambshank redemption burger and though I could barely hold it together it was delicious! Just hits the spot. The burger combinations are rather unique! The names surely quick to give a smile..

Controversial impression. Delicious toasted sandwiches with pulled pork and lamb. Unfortunately, tea cups were poorly washed and teaspoons had old food pieces stuck on them (hopefully no sick people used that dishes before).

Extremely friendly and welcoming. Delicious fried chicken, I would highly recommend the run duck fried chicken with the mother clucker running a very close second, and REALLY good coffee. They sell the chicken seasoning and spicy sauce so you can recreate the experience at home

Stopped by for breakfast on our way to Lake Tekapo, just by the outside look, and were amazed inside!! Very kind people, excellent Bannana Berry smoothie & Al's Amaze Balls 😉 The quiet room out back is perfect to chill out, and it's a shame we didn't have time to stay and snug in the armchairs & sofa!

We stopped by when we were on the way to Lake Tekapo from Christchurch. This is the first ever cafe we visited in NZ! The indoor cafe area was closed after 4pm, but the food truck was still open! They dont serve coffee on the food truck so we just bought a coke to go. The staff was friendly and nice. Love the cool and hippy look of the whole cafe!!! Would love to try their coffee next time.

We had a nice cup of coffee on a short pit stop on the way to Tekapo here. Service was very friendly and fast and we especially enjoyed the quirky interior of the place (even the bathrooms are nicely decorated). Would come back and try their food items with their special hot sauce next time 😊

Nice range of burgers and the best kumara fries I've had - amazingly crunchy. Nice milkshakes too. Al's hot sauce added a good bit of zing to the burgers. Seats and tables are pretty cramped, but everyone seems to tolerate the bumps. Fantastic selection of canned NZ beer too!

Best Gluten Free burger experience ever. Super tasty ingredients, so many great burgers to choose from. The gluten free bun stayed together through the whole burger (they often fall apart halfway through). They have a way to cook the GF bun separately for those with Coeliac’s Disease. The staff were very helpful and confident they could make it fully GF.

Cool, funky spot. Delicious food. Home cured bacon so you know it's not pumped full of rubbish. Oh, and loads of shake flavours to chose from! Great for young kids too, there's a corner of toys and couches, as well as a couple of high chairs.

What a great retro cafe in such a cute beautiful wee town. The menu was nice with an interesting spin on the kids menu. We came when it was super busy on a wet day, so there was a bit of a wait for our food, but there was a guitar on the wall to pass the time away ( what a great idea!) That museli though, delicious!

I am giving 4 stars because I asked for a takeaway cup but was served in a ceramic cup. Other than that, fantastic. The owner said he styled the place with 'the Bach' feel. And in my opinion he has done an excellent job. There is a guitar, ukulele and a piano(outside) that customers are welcome to play. The staff are super friendly!; and for the boys, are a site for sore eyes🤩

The coffee available was damned nice - and there are a variety of other beverages available including beer. Delicious seafood chowder/ The coolest loo in NZ - a disco ball with Donna Summer playing and old LP covers on the wall, not just any old LP covers but bad music LP covers. Other walls are covered with old survey maps. Great stuff.

A wonderful place to stop by and have coffee after a long drive. The service here is superb However I felt that the milk of my cappuccino was slightly overheated giving it a burnt milk taste. The best fried chicken place. I always go for the chicken pieces, fries & mash dish. The mash + gravy is so good. Kumara fries = hit and miss. Sometimes they use the yellow kumara and it tastes pretty starchy.

The running duck is my Tuesday go to. Their poached quail manages to quench my thirst for poultry on a regular basis. I took my spouse to the running duck, and I knew instantly that she was not the one, as she detested your restaurant. However, while on this date, I met a beautiful waitress who solicited my love and affection. What a night! will be back next Tuesday.

I concur with Thomas, I am his wife and although he dumped me and left with our waitress I was pleasantly surprised by the deep fried mushroom. It not only brought a plethora of flavours to the table but melted on my tongue. Will also be back next Tuesday to inform Thomas that I will be taking the kids.

The hot sauce (theirs) is fantastic and, as luck would have it, my Tabasco is almost finished so this is a great, homegrown replacement.

So good, we just had to go back for lunch on Monday on way home.... it was once again supberb. Very family friendly. A group of about 15 of us stopped here for lunch. We ate outside, and had a very pleasant time here. The food was tasty, with a reasonable range of options. They were quite busy, so we had about a 25 minute wait for our meals. They have a really funky toilet here, decorated with old movie albums and other memorabilia and interesting music playing. We loved it. :)

A nice cafe in Geraldine Nice ambience and friendly staff. Kids friendly and there are plenty of interesting antiques A guitar and a ukelele to play with! Do visit their toilet for a surprise haha. I liked the pulled lamb burger, was extremely tasty. Would strongly recommend it Although they werent very generous with the meat... Their duck deluxe was fair... perhaps the beef patty i ate was overcooked... Their coffee is pretty good, my friend who is a coffee addict loved it. Geraldine is full of standard Cafes serving quiches and cakes so dining at The Running Duck is a refreshing change for the locals and tourists visiting the area. Burgers to suit all tastes and milkshakes that bring back classic kiwi memories. If it's a morning pick me up you need, The Running Duck's trained baristas served freshly ground UnderGround Coffee beans. Rich in flavour, you'll hardly be able to wait for the next one. But above all, the atmosphere that the staff at the running duck work so hard to create is very clear as soon as you step in the door. It feels as if you've stepped into a family kitchen - warm, inviting, and just what you need no matter what kind of day you've had.
