Reviews of Five Rivers Cafe
I.
Nice eggs Benedict with bacon and Salmon. It’s a must have. They have at the backyard horses and lhamas, good for the kids to get entertained. Coffee was 2 out of 5. I asked for Almod milk, I received cow’s milk.
N.
Great location & beautiful views you can enjoy with a lovely meal or drink. They offer delicious vegan and gluten free options. I came back again to find a real journeys tour bus had filled the cafe, about a 20min wait for the soup of the day. Long line and stressed staff. Not a place to stop by for a quick bite.
M.
Best cheese rolls, great coffee and mouse traps! Lovely staff super friendly! Definitely recommend popping in next time your near ☺️
T.
Well located, right at the corner of two main highway. It's a big attraction that to stop and have a cup of coffee. That's why it's quite busy.
The coffee is wonderful. The setting of the cafe is warm and nice. Outdoor sitting has lovely view.
K.
3 stars because what cafe does it have WIFI in this day and age! The food from the kitchen is very expensive ( >$20) but the sandwiches they can toast for you are under $10 and good quantity. The coffee was good. There is a tiny souvenir shop to browse through but it’s pretty standard stuff in this part of the country. There are sheep and other animals in the back yard, so take some photos! We would have stayed here longer but without WiFi it limited our stay.
A.
Quality cooking and friendly waiting staff. A haunt for locals too. Strategically positioned at start if the road to Te Anau. Too many lovely artisanal gifts to buy.
J.
Great little place on our way to take a break. It was clean, fair prices, friendly staff that was helpful in giving us drink recommendations. Across the street were a bunch of cows and next door are alpacas.
K.
Great little Cafe, great coffee, some lovely art works on display ( for sale). Rest rooms clean.
I.
Not what it seems from the outside. Lovely outdoor area with a beautiful rural outlook. The coffee was excellent.
S.
Nice place for a break between Te Anau and Queenstown. Farm animals for the kids and coffee and a small gallery for the adults. They serve some pretty food cakes too!
G.
Called in here on the 28th June 2020 on a cold miserable day looking for a decent feed while driving Queenstown to Invercargill.
The young ladies serving and working were great. No problems whatsoever.
However the coffee I had was pretty bitter and needed quite a bit of sugar to offset that.
I order the nachos for a light meal.
Pretty bland - they really need to offer mild/meduim and hot alternatives.
However what the nachos did consist of for me was a plate of Corn Chips with a smattering of Mince/nacho sauce mix and a ton of sour cream.
Fairly disappointing by my reckoning.
If this was the trend I would not be back and wouldnt be inclined to recommend it.
I'm not fussy and was not asking or even expecting a million dollar meal - however this was a bit less than I expected from this place.
In all honesty - only 3 stars from me and that has more to do with the staff than the food or coffee.
J.
Yummy blue cod and chips and excellent seafood chowder. Warm and inviting on a chilly, wet day.
D.
Lovely outside area. There's a field nextdoor that has a horse and other animals. Coffee was hot and the service was friendly.
R.
We always stop here for at least a coffee on our way through. Good range of cabinet food. I haven't tried their cooked meals yet. They have a small animal park out the back (horse, lamas...) and outdoor seating. Good toilets. They sell crafts and paintings etc too.
M.
Used to be a great place to visit but we stopped in for brunch on a Sunday and were very disappointed. With only 2 other small tables occupied, we waited 45 mins for Eggs Benedict - which was hugely underwhelming. Coffees were just OK. Will find an alternative stop next time.
n.
Nice food even mum enjoyed her food. Interesting paintings and really nice coffee
G.
Not our first visit enjoyed the food my wife tells me best muffins, and I say the same about the cheese rolls.
J.
I have edited my review as my wife felt I was being too harsh. Yes there was issues on two occasions however the food was good once it arrived. Some staff need a reminder on customer service. but in saying that there are staff who just go out of there way to be kind and its not fair to label this place by the attitude of some. On one visit the chef was more than happy to do our breakfast after appointed time thanking her for that.
We visited this Cafe three times while traveling the lower South island on tour
Wait time on food was longer than expected I noted Senior Staff can be very rude especially when an order was placed at the wrong table. Back in today 16th greeted with a very pleasant young staff member shame when there was a delay in food all you could hear was inappropriate language from the kitchen. be aware you can be heard.
G.
Stopped here for a coffee break while travelling from Invercargill to Queenstown, and vice versa on my return a few days later.
Staff very friendly. Being a cold day a nice warm fire greeted you when you walked in.
Prices are reasonable, as coffee and a cake was only $9:00.
There is a lot of history attached to this cafe, as it was formerly the Five Rivers garage and workshop which serviced the local rural communities at that time.
It is good to see that this building was repurposed and turned into a cafe, which is popular with travellers during both winter and summer months.
I recommend this cafe as a definite stop to have a break from driving.
E.
Great coffee break with good food. Very nice and relaxing atmosphere. Their gift and art shop has good quality art from top local local artists.

T.
Nice place to stop off and take your 15min break. Nice backyard outdoor seating as well. Coffee and snacks available. Fireplace inside was off but was deserted anyway

M.
Had breakfast at this place while travelling from Te Anau to Queenstown on 27/12/2012.
I was quite impressed with the place as it is in the middle of nowhere. The atmosphere is quite good, the service was nice and quick and the breakfast was very nice, coffee with pancakes.
Definitely a very good to stop for breakfast (maybe lunch) if you are travelling through the area.
J.
Lovely Date scone and hot flat white coffee. Will return...
m.
Wonderful cafe, great coffee and magnificent meals. I had the blue cod and my partner had the seafood chowder, both excellent. We will be sure to call in again when down this way.
M.
Beautiful place with awesome atmosphere but expensive and quite far!! If you’re on the road or would be a good place to stop though.
B.
Stopped in for a takeaway lunch as passing through. The food & coffee was great. Was very impressed with the prices also. There is plenty of inside seating as well as an outdoor area which enjoys some nice views.
There is also a gallery attached to the cafe (didn't get time to check that out).
R.
An excellent selection of cabinet food combined with great coffee and teas make for a quick comfortable stop. Or choose hot food that is delivered in short time by friendly helpful staff.
G.
Nice atmosphere. Food very expensive. Burger and chips $22. Very average burger. I expected a real gourmet burger for that price. Was very disappointed. We came back past from Te Anau but didn't stop in because the food was so overpriced! Great location.
S.
Great costumer service and just the food we needed after getting back from the Keppler. Lovely and quick, yummy fries, scones and ham and cheese toasties.
S.
Delicious and fresh food. Great coffee. Cosy and clean atmosphere and facilities. Friendly service. Best scrambled eggs in NZ! Thanks.
r.

R.

M.
Welcoming staff. Good cafe food
W.
Great food. Lovely place to sit and enjoy a break from travelling.
W.
A bit cold. Travellers from north are not used to cold so i suggest if customers are wearing jackets, put on fire. They might stay longer
K.
Amazing & beautiful breakfast stop. Food was delicious. Definitely worth stopping.
R.
Very pleased with the menue and the food selection available, staff were pleasant and helpful. Our meals were great with some homemade relish which is always better than mass produced products. Good clean toilet facilities. Some beautiful art work of local southland scenes topped off a good stop.
D.
Pretty damn good for being in the middle of nowhere!
S.
Nice salmon bagel and spicy chai for lunch.
R.
A great place for a snack or a meal midway between Milford Sound/observation and Queenstown. The food is awesome. The farm animals are a great photo opportunity with the mountains in the background. Very friendly staff and great souvenirs to buy from the shop.
W.
Has a very good breakfast and the seafood chowder is excellent. While they cater for coaches service is quick and friendly. There is excellent off road parking and a small tourist shop.
G.
Disappointing milky cappuccino and date scone, need to lift their game
A.
Heard about this place online and was a great spot on the way to Te Anau from Queenstown. I ordered a BLT and it was delicious. All positive comments from my family too. Would definitely return if we are ever in that area again. Bonus was the farm animals too!
S.
Great coffee and snack foods. Great service - they tracked me down after I had foolishly left my wallet amongst the books!
N.
Nice place to be in as stop for a coffee, clean and friendly.liked their art gallery but not enough room to purchase.
K.
Great food and friendly service. Have stopped here many times on our way south and it never fails to impress.
R.
Stopped for lunch at 2pm, kitchen closed already so only cabinet food. Cheese rolls nice and good coffee.
D.
Love the location but the cafe could be better. Not awful but just ok. There are usually some animals to look at when eating outside too.
S.

Five Rivers Cafe was a nice place to stop between Queenstown and Te Anau. Unfortunately, the kitchen had closed at 2pm and we had to order food from the case. We split a chicken, cranberry, and brie panini that they warmed up. It was really good!

(Translated) Nice coffee on the street that invites you to rest. We stopped here for lunch and unfortunately they were a bit overwhelmed by the rush and there were slight delays. Unfortunately, there is only a salad here as a side dish and the rest of the menu is quite powerful in terms of calories.
