We stayed here overnight while doing the Twin Coast Cycle Trail and we were thoroughly impressed. The service was impeccable and the place itself was just amazingly restored. A real jewel and highly recommended to other travelers out there who happen to pass through Kaikohe!

6 of us stayed 2 nights as part of our cycle trip. Had the place to ourselves which was great for us, but really hope they get plenty more visitors, as it is so worthwhile. Staff were super-helpful, the 3 meal option that we went for was fantastic - more food than we could eat, great morning coffees (thanks Lita) and the lunches were spot-on. Fantastic renovation of a great building

The room was absolutely beautiful! Being able to have a long hot soak in my own bath was a luxury I would come back for alone! And the food was top cuisine which I feel could easily match anywhere in NZ if not overseas !

We popped in after visiting the hot pools. We both had fish and chips and salad. It was one of the nicest fish and chips we've had. Fantastic, thank you. Would definitely call again. The rest rooms where clean and tidy, the staff welcoming and we didn't have to wait too long.

A great place to stay in Kaikohe. I needed a bed for one night, just the bed as I was at a function where food would be provided, and I'd be arriving late and leaving early, so the Backpackers option was perfect.
Cosy bed, excellent bathroom with good hot shower, incredibly good value. The restaurant is a bonus as food options in Kaikohe are few though I didn't need it this time. Thanks to Jack, Di and the staff for making my stay so easy. I'll be booking in again this month.

The Left Bank is a quaint hotel retro-fitted into a heritage bank. Our room had all the mod-cons, and we really enjoyed our stay. The Left Bank was clean and tidy and the staff were very accommodating and friendly, despite us turning up wet and dirty from our cycle along the Twin Coast Cycle Trail from Opua in the rain. Lunch and dinner and the service were excellent. I will not hesitate to stay at the Left Bank the next time I am staying in Kaikohe.

Have only visited twice during past two years but impressed. Lovely service, nice food & coffee and would like to return! Some distance from where we live!

Thank you for such a lovely stay in Kaikohe. You made everything really easy to do the Twin Coast bike ride. It was great to meet the other people biking and to share the experience with them. I would certainly recommend your all in package to have a lovely relaxing break.

We had an amazing stay at Left Bank. It is such a beautiful building with so much character, the owners have really put a lot of love and effort into it. Everything was spotlessly clean and lots of nice touches such as a fridge for your drinks after a hard days cycle. Was great to lock up the bikes too. Owners were super friendly as were the staff and great to see the passion for making Kaikohe a great town. Dinner was great too. Highly recommend.

The ladies who serve are very capable. Well trained. Food is good and tasty .
We are vegan but chose the vegetarian options. Again very tasty but very small serving for $18.00 cost four small mushrooms stuffed and dressed.

We stayed for a night half way through the Twin Coast Cycle Trail and it was awesome. Beautiful accommodation, bike storage, lovely staff and great food (we had a late lunch on arrival, then dinner and breakfast!)

A group of us stayed at the hotel as a half way stop during our bike ride from coast to coast.
The hotel rooms are gorgeous, spacious with old times charm, clean and comfy. The staff was very friendly.
Coffee and breakfast were great.
Dinner was disappointing and very over-priced for what it was. The special duck dish was dry, Hapuka was sold as snapper and a $47 steak was just not up to standard.

the dorm layout was a good idea. however the dinner was almost inedible it was so oversalted. we must have had a fill in cook as all the other reviews praised the food, I checked beforehand coz it is on the VERY pricey end for Kaikohe. Upon revisiting the reviews mainly seem to mention the cafe rather than the evening meals. It was very expensive for mediocre food and we had to book our meals in advance and were not offered the daily specials or the seafood chowder which was on the menu for other diners on the night. Badly handled and very disappointed. Entrees and mains were served at the same time so our meals were cold to eat. Ate the meals as we were hungry from cycling and figured the over salting was a replacement for the loss in sweating but really, really disappointed and would not return and will definitely not be recommending to anyone. When staying in the hostel/hotel you are not permitted to sit at the outside tables without buying something from the restaurant. And the outside tables are behind the hostel gates so not available to just the cafe customers. So you are left with an internal room inside with a double couch and a table that seats 6 for half a dozen accommodation rooms and 8 dorm beds...... beautiful place but very badly thought out for comfort.

Lovely night at Left Bank after a days riding. Has really been done up well, very comfortable. The staff were so welcoming and helpful. Lovely dinner as well. Please support this wonderful gem in in one of our small country towns in New Zealand.

Really nicely restored inside. Aircon works nicely.
Staff were fantastic to us.
Meals from the in house restaurant was perfect. They even have a packed lunch on your breakfast card for your adventures out and about 😁

We love the concept, and congratulate the owners on saving this historic building and restoring it to its former glory. When we first stumbled upon The Left bank we were driving through Kaikohe on our way to the Hokianga and stopped for a coffee. The lovely receptionist showed us around the hotel - the fabulous guest rooms upstairs, and the thoughtful backpackers accommodation downstairs - and we decided we would make The Left Bank a destination for a night the next time we ventured to the Far North.
We stayed on Sunday 14 March 2021 after 2 months in the planning. We had been really looking forward to it, and had made a reservation for dinner at Mint cafe and restaurant. There was only one other guest staying in the hotel on the 14th, so we took the opportunity to book a second room for extra space and comfort due to a recent surgery. The rooms are really lovely, and the gentleman on housekeeping was very accommodating with extra pillows and prioritising cleaning of our second room. (Big shout out to him as he became the dishwasher in the cafe in the evening and the breakfast cook the next day.)
Dinner was so disappointing. We ordered sourdough as a starter to share, snapper and chips and the 200gm eye fillet for our mains. Expensive, but we had decided to spoil ourselves. The wine was also expensive, but we liked that it was all sourced from the region. The first bottle we ordered was out of stock ($43) and the others were more expensive. The sourdough was not available, but we were okay with ciabatta as an alternative. It took ages to come. The three other tables were empty by the time we got our starter. Shortly after we’d finished the starter the mains were brought out. Cold. Even the side order of fries. No-one came to check how we were enjoying the meal, so we went to tell Jade that the meals were too cold to eat and my medium rare steak was medium to well done. We suggested to Jade that the chef had forgotten our starter and that our mains had been under a warmer for a long time while the starter was prepared and we then ate it. By the reaction we got, we were right. However, Jade took the meals away and, in due course, hot replacements turned up. By that time we were a bit over it though. The meals weren’t particularly nice and we decided that we didn’t want to have dessert which had definitely been on the cards earlier. Jade didn’t make any effort to make up for our disappointing evening, so we decided to let him know that we were disappointed with that. He explained that he would have given us a dessert, but we had already said no to any more food. He asked whether we would be having breakfast at Mint, and we confirmed we would.
Breakfast - classic savoury mince with whole grain toast - took a long time to prepare but it was delicious, although served with (unannounced) ciabatta. This is when we noticed that the breakfast chef had been our housekeeper the day before. Again, no-one came back to ask whether we were happy with the meals. The receptionist we’d met in December was on duty. It might have been an off day, but she wasn’t the same friendly receptionist we remembered. We said we were staying in the house. She asked us to order and pay at the counter. She took full payment for the breakfast and coffees, notwithstanding Jade had left a message for her about us. I politely expressed some surprise, and said that Jade had wanted to do something to make up for our disappointing dinner. She didn’t even ask what had gone wrong. Nor did she ask when she checked us out later, and charged us in full for the dinner, how we had enjoyed our stay. She didn’t wish us goodbye or a safe journey onwards.
What a difference a night can make. Prior to dinner ending we were thinking that we might try to book out the venue for our wedding. We even talked to Jade about it. Now, it would be a no, based on our experience. What a shame.

Half way along the Twin Coast Cycle trail there is an oasis - the Left Bank Hotel and Mint Restaurant. We ended up cycling on one of the hottest days of the year (31 degrees) so appreciated the air conditioning too. Fabulous accommodation, super helpful staff and great food. Thank you!
F. P.
Fantastic beautifully restored building with wonderful touches throughout. Gorgeous place to stay as our halfway point on our cycle of the Twin Coast cycleway. Gorgeous furniture and fittings.....a real treat! We also ate at the Mint Restaurant for dinner, which was an exceptional meal also. 10/10 highly recommended for food and accommodation. They provide breakfast and lunch also so you must pop in! Wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.

Excellent little cafe, fantastic food and coffee, and also caters for small business functions/meetings with free private rooms. Great use of an old bank, complete with vault, and the refurbished molded ceiling features and wood paneling give a regal feeling to the place. Highly recommended if you are heading north.

We stayed at the Left Bank at the halfway point of the bike ride. We arrived very tired and dehydrated and Brooke and the staff were amazing and kind and helped us get back on our feet and ready for next day. The room was beautiful, the food great and the vibe in the whole establishment is very cool.
Can't recommend the whole experience highly enough.

Great Staff, Great Facilities, Great Food !!
We used Left Bank as our base for a 3 days while we visited the area and rode the Twin Coast Cycle-trail.
Arriving late first night we used the boutique Backpackers/Dorms, they were great.
We used the Hotel rooms the 2nd and 3rd night and they are really special, roomy and well presented.
Mint Restaurant Food, Wine and Coffee is also very good, a beer at the end of the ride really appreciated.
The hostess/Manager Brooke brings it all together, she runs a top spot !!
Thanks so much team.... We'll be back !

Amazing place to go, great decor and awesome food. Staff are so very helpful and friendly.

Mint Cafe' locate inside Left Bank. Great coffee, great fresh scones, superb service from friendly smiling staff and one of the best seafood chowders I have experienced. Fantastically creamy with wonderful depth of flavours, perfectly seasoned without being overpowering.
Highly recommend.

The rooms are spacious and really comfortable. The restaurant serves delicious food. Happy to oblige any dietary needs. The staff are so friendly and helpful. This is a gorgeous place to stay.

If your doing the cycle trail, the left bank is a must. We stayed in the backpacker. Great value .... allowed us to spend up on the Lamb Shanks and sticky Date pudding. Friendly kiwi staff, clean comfortable beds, and great showers. Thankyou

Was an unique place to stay and loved to see all the restorations completed with style and special character in every room. It was extremely clean and loved the friendly staff! Would highly recommend this place to stay if you are travelling the Far North. A real treasure and loved the quaint experience.

The Left Bank is the old BNZ building lovingly restored by its current owners. I had the pleasure of staying there for a night very recently and couldn’t fault the stunning accommodation or the service. The attention to detail and thoughtful touches were much appreciated, the staff were kind and demonstrated exceptional dedication and professionalism. I also had breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant, Mint and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for a great experience.

Great coffee in an amazing old bank building which gave an olde world vibe with the chandeliers & wonderful plaster work in the high ceilings
M. D.
Not bad, food is ok, good price. nothing to rave about but a good spot for lunch and a fantastic building. service was slow but it was mothers day so i'll forgive them :)

We stayed at the Left Bank Hotel when we cycled the Coast to Coast cycle trail. It is a lovely hotel - everything in the room was spotless and the bed very comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay there on our next visit to Kaikohe.
S. S.
We stayed 3 nights in this wonderful hotel in Kaikohe for our ride on the Pou Herenga Tai - Twin Coast Cycle Trail from Opua to Horeke. Well done to Jack and Di for seeing its potential and helping to bring life back to the North. The staff were great and always willing to accommodate our wishes. The rooms have been renovated beautifully keeping the original features but with modern convieniences. We enjoyed tasty food and wine. Lunches provided for our riding days were filling, healthy and delicious.
Our bikes and cars were stored safely off road.
Being central to the track meant we could start riding each day without the need for a shuttle and it was easy to arrange shuttles from the end of the track each day back to Kiakohe.

I have visited your cafe associated with your upgraded BNZ at Kaikohe and was shown through your facility by your cafe staff.
I was very impressed and want to congratulate you on the extent and quality of your upgrade of this impressive old building. Especially in your Kaikohe town which will benefit from your quality of service.
I wish you all the best for the future of your enterprise.
As a respectful feedback for you is that is was obvious that your Cafe staff, that were interacting with your visitors, will need further training to upgrade their level of confidence in communicating with your cafe clients.

Decadence and joy.
The Mint Restaurant, as part of the Left Bank site, has been awesomely refurbished
/refinished in-keeping with its heritage era when it was opened as a bank (inclusive of manager's residence) - but with modern health standards appropriate to its repurposed intention - upmarket cafe/restaurant and function centre.
Chandeliers and Edwardian? features belie modern plumbing and exquisite finishing throughout - including kitchen, meeting room, bathrooms and main dining area.
Each dish was expertly prepared and presented. Chicken, pork and beef were all beautifully cooked. Veges still firm and nutritious - yet arriving warm and yummy. Custard with caramel over fruit (Christmas) cake finished the dining beautifully.
A good array of chilled and cold refreshments available. Top notch coffee by appointment! (Day shift)
A small beautiful team; gracious, pleasant and helpful. And yet chatty in a nice neighbourly way. Nga mihi nui

Left Bank Hotel in Kaikohe, Northland has a great story. A couple who grew up in Kaikohe returned to their hometown and spent a lot of effort and money to convert a dilapidated old bank building into a fabulous old-style hotel and restaurant. It is well managed by the lovely, energetic, well-organised Brooke.
We stayed two nights and in our one full day we did a 44 km bike ride from Kaikohe to Hokere with Top Trail Bikes. Wonderful! The trail goes gently up an old rail cutting, along a beautiful, bucolic riverbank and over a wooden track through wetlands to Hokere, on the mighty Hokianga Inlet. Top Trail then met us and brought us back to Kaikohe where we enjoyed dinner at the Left Bank. Highly recommended. D&D from Wellington, Nov 2019

Beautifully restored Bank building, our room was fabulously decorated in a restrained old style in keeping with the buildings age and history but lacking in none of the modern necessities. Attentive hosts complimented our stay
E. W.
I had the pork loin special and the food was good, we had the place almost to ourselves so it was nice and quiet. This would have been 5 stars but the food took 45 mins to come out.

Lovely food. The best scotch fillet ever. I love that you cater for dairy free, vegan etc. Please don't rethink your wi-fi policy. I don't want to eat surrounded by people who are somewhere else. Kaikohe is blessed by your presence.
