Reviews of The Woolshed Canaan
The Woolshed Cafe on top of Takaka Hill is a charming spot worth a stop if you're driving through the area. As the name suggests, it's housed in an old woolshed, offering a unique and rustic atmosphere. The cafe boasts a few friendly farm animals and provides lovely views of the surrounding countryside. While the menu is relatively basic, don't expect a gourmet feast. The food they do offer, however, is tasty and well-prepared. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable.
Great place to break up the travel and to buy some locally produced woolly stuff. Very nice and worth a visit.
Great coffee and rolls! Owner is very nice and animals are cute! Great place for some coffee break during your trip!
such a cool cafe. amazing vibes, amazing coffee, amazing friendly people. really made our day so much better stopping here! cant recommend enough :)
It is a must stop when you are in this area. There is a lovely and friendly stuff. The place is very nice! Plus you can pet animals. Truly recommend it:)
It was a bit chilly day when we pulled into the Carpark . Plenty of parking for large motorhomes and then a short walk to the Woolshed Cafe. It was a lovely feeling opening the cafe door and being met with the warmth from a hot fire. We had cake and a hot drink, and after looking around inside at the crafts on display, thanked the staff and walked around outside looking at the animals . DOG friendly must be on a leash .
Absolutely adore the Woolshed and not just for the fresh, homemade food. The location at the absolute top of Takaka hill makes it very special. You are sat on top of a vast marble crystal after all.
Do not pass without dropping in!
Amazing place. We go there every year during our summer break. Kids love the animals and feeding them. Great atmosphere. Been there once during winter - with the fireplace it is gorgeous ❤️
Great place, good coffee, yummy raspberry & cinnamon scrolls, cool atmosphere, friendly service, & fun spot for kids with the animals too 👌
It's very cool & the coffee & food is excellent. Loved the shop & the animals are a treat....take your kids. Only open weekends!
One of the best coffees I’ve had during my trip, and a lovely atmosphere to enjoy it in! Cosy with the fire on on a rainy morning
This place is so lovely. I've been there with family 3 times. The view is amazing, the café is nice and the animals are the highlight for me, I love feeding and petting them.
Such a gorgeous cafe!! Open a few days a week so check it out next time you’re there. Great food and hot drinks. They had the fire going and a gorgeous gift shop with so many hand made treats. Really friendly and great for kids and adults to see the adorable animals they have there.
Great rustic place with lots of character! Good coffee, scones and yummy toasted sandwiches. They have a small selection of paperback books which you can read as you enjoy your coffee. Lots of history of the local area on display and interesting wool products for sale. You can also visit the friendly animals outside. Good to visit this place before or after a caving/hiking/mountain biking trip in the area
And amazing place, need to stop have coffee tea a great food, some lovely things to buy, highly recommend this spot lots to see feed the animals
Loved this place. Rustic, gorgeous goodies, loved the animals, lovely place to relax and have a break.
Great little stop point. Friendly staff and animals. Just watch out for the overgrown bush chicken
Lovely wool/yarn store, comforting atmosphere, service with a smile! My only wish was that I lived closer so I could go to a workshop.
Rustic and real ...coffee, food and people a special place with an amazing view of a unique geological wonderland.
Say hi to the friendly old pig out basking in the sunshine. I will be back
The kids loved all the animals. Coffee was really nice too.
I stop here every time I go over Takaka hill. They have really fantastic staff, amazing scones with cream & jam, great coffee, and I LOVE feeding the animals!!
Quaint store that is a must visit when walking Harwoods Hole. Jessica is an amazing wool crafter and her goods are beautiful.
The Cafe food was delicious and had gluten free options available. The hot chocolate was mmmmm mmmmm.
A delightful range of farm animals that love attention too
Great little spot, beautiful views back over the ranges and bay. Nice selection of animals for the kids to feed too!
Great location, food was amazing, the staff just as friendly as can be, and the prices were normal not jacked up because of its rural location, will visit again for sure next time we are passing !
We stopped in here before and after our stay to the Canaan Campsite. The waitress was very friendly and even remembered us on the second day. The coffee and cakes are super delicious. It is so sweet to still be able to visit the little petting zoo behind the house.
Don't drive by! Go in!!
This place is kiwi as !!!!
Don't drive past this place when the doors open, great coffee!!!!
In a very kiwi place
Awesome setting and views. Great food and coffee. Friendly staff giving excellent service. Thanks
This is a MUST visit. Such a lovely spot and great place to get a coffee and cake. Very friendly staff and cosy.
Converted from an old woodshed, this is a quirky little cafe.
There's souvenirs and locally made crafts for sale.
Good coffee, and pleasant, friendly service. The food range was a little limited, but we didn't go for food. We took the kids up to spend a rainy morning doing felt craft. You can felt your own soap and make felt pictures. There's also a few farm animals for the kids to look at.
Worth a stop in if you need a break going over the hill, or just for the chance to do a different craft.
We loved it!
Lovely place to buy a wizard and feed the bonkers animals. Food is good quality as well. Great reward for kids getting to top of Takaka without vomiting.
What a great find! Had a lovely time exploring the shop and feeding animals. Great coffee and yum fresh fruit icecream! My daughter and I have just made felted soap from one of the felting kits we purchased in the shop, fun to make and instructions were excellent.
Great coffee and cakes.
They have a lot of wool stuff that is from their own sheep.
Highly recommended to break the long ride to/from Takaka.
Lovely spot great toasted sandwich
What a find. Gorgeous yarn shop with the benefit of excellent coffee while I cogitated about the difficult decision of what to buy from the amazing selection of yarns grown on the farm. For non-yarn lovers there was animals, a small but excellent library and other yarn based crafts such as felting and weaving. A veritable treasure grove.
Nice place to relax and have a scone home maid raspberry jam with whipp cream and coffee.
The trouble is most times I go past it's shut.
😒
Great atmosphere with the animals. It's so calm and slows down the day, if you just sit there, relax and feel happy with the coffee in your hand and an warm apple pie on your plate.
This is an out-of-the-way cafe on top of the Takaka Hill. The menu is very limited but the shop, animals, and scenery make it worth a visit. I bought several quirky gifts here for my creative friends!
There are silkies (hens), goats, pigs, a llama, emu and calves.
Great coffee and the animals are amazing. Especially loretta the pig
Lovey scone cakes and coffee. Interesting locally made gifts and wool. Well worth a visit. Great for families as a variety of animals to look at
nice coffee and cake with great outlook and funny animals😊
What a great place to stop on the way over the hill or on the way to some fun adventure. Good friendly service, yummy food, especially their scones and cake :-) and of course the best coffee between Riwaka and Takaka :-)
Such a neat spot, delicious treats and tastiest toasted sandwiches. Big hit with the animal farm. Very cool spot!
Country cafe which supplies a variety of food and drinks. There is no insulation in the building, but they have a fire going when it's colder. There's hand crafts for sale and animals you can pat. Worth stopping at on the journey up and over the big hill.
Jessica and her staff are great ..... they bake delicious cakes and make a good coffee and I love their wool ! Its always worth a visit !
Maya and Steve
One of the best place to visit with kids. Has alot of animals. A great stop for coffee and some snacks.
Lovely quiet place. Great food and hosts, breaks the hill up for younger ones. Animals to look at and feed. View is very nice too.
Really coffee and cakes. I highly recommend a stop there, everything is good and homemade.
Really nice place to drink a coffee and get some cake or skones. The animals outside are adorable and the inside is really cosey. The coffee, the cake and the skone was really good.
This was a great outing. Got to feed the animals. Had a nice sweet treat and the hot drinks were amazing. Also had a toasted sandwich which was divine!
Makes great coffee. Wool crafts a ailable in the shop also animals for children to see and feed. Outdoor picnic area. Friendly staff.
Always yummy food. Pumpkin soup was excellent and "real" ham in the toasties. Kids enjoyed the animals too.
Very interesting place with lots of Gotland sheep wool and so may knitted and woven and felted things to buy, also carded and spun wool.Just thought some bigger and better signage would help at corner of the main road and tidy up lawn, seating area outside to encourage more NZ tourists in since we dont have so may from overseas at present.Didnt have food or cooffee but it looked pretty yummy food.We had just eaten before going there or we would have had lunch there.
Best cuppa in years. Love this place and the friendly welcome we get from both the animals and humans. Highly recommend.
Amazing Cafe, lovely owners, great food and drinks. We stopped here by pure chance and absolutely loved it.
This place is a real gem. On the Takaka Road, just at the beginning of the road to Harward's Hole. I hadn't been back for two years and was pleased to see it is still going well. It's is really a Woolshed and is the best place to stop for a break on the way into our out of Takaka. I can recommend the Devonshire Tea - warm homemade scone - hmmm hmmm.
Of course, it's the perfect place for MTB'ers to meet before hitting the Canaan Loop or Rameka Track.
Oh yeah - they have cute animals.
Lovely place for a rest. Great views, cosy pets and delicious food & drinks. Wool and gifts as presents for the dear one or yourself.
Nice coffee, rustic surroundings.
Lovely place to stop on the way to the bay or to start the rameka. Great coffee and a good petting zoo for kids and adults
Wonderfully calm and welcoming atmosphere. Lots of room. Finally, good coffee. Some sweet treats and sandwiches.
Great venue, friendly and efficient service. Great having all the farm animals outside.

Great food and coffee ... great place for a break on the way to Pohara ... the kids loved the animals too!
Great coffee and food, served with style by friendly staff in a rustic farm setting.
Nice place for a coffee. Feed the animals and enjoy the view. Buy some wool related gifts.
I went there months ago, they have cute animals around, great time to spend with kids.
Very nice Café, with a little zoo. Ideal for families.
A lovely stop for a coffee & a interesting look through all their woollen goods made on site.
Unfortunately my order came with thick bread and difficult to bite/ chew crusts
