Reviews of Native Tree Cafe
M.
Great little cafe to stop at along the highway for pies, breakfast, sandwiches, toasties, salads, desserts, amazing coffee and tea drinks, and a good selection of cold drinks.
The service is always quick and friendly.
They have indoor and outdoor seating.
There are items available for purchase, like local honey, olive oils, dressings, jellies and jams, and ice cream treats. Milk, dairy items, fresh eggs, and fresh vegetables are also available for purchase.
Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available, too.
One of our favorite stops while traveling around New Zealand!
I.
Stopped in for lunch on the go and toilet stop. Would love to have had more time to sit and eat. Nice looking setting, good range if food and quick service.
C.
Lovely venue with plenty of shady tables in a gorgeous garden setting. Dog water bowls everywhere. Great food served quickly. Well worth the stop.
I.
Beautiful place, good Pitt stop for us heading to Rotorua. Was pleased to see a baby changing room for our little one.
Custard slice is yum.
Coffee is surprisingly good too!
Overall good quick stop.
Waitress service is terrible.
Would love to try the food though.
D.
Very nice set up with friendly staff. Coffee and food was good, but expect to pay little more for food here. Should work on breakfast dish design, specially on eggs on toast, which looks poor. Although Bacon and eggs on toast were delicious!.
P.
We had breakfast here on Thursday morning and we had the breakfast pannis and it was lovely so was the coffee. Atmosphere great. Service great.
r.
Excellent lunch the Muffins were delicious as was the toastie. Definitely a revisit.
C.
Great food every single time we visit, the staff are so friendly and welcoming, and even better it's dog friendly, and our two Rotties were given lots of pats. We will pop in again on our return back to Auckland.
A.
I had a Steak Pie and a Pork Pie. Should have taken a picture sooner but the food was so delicious I couldn't stop myself. Staff is incredibly nice, plenty of seating, and a clean environment. Food and coffee are made right in front of you. Fantastic experience, highly recommended!
H.
We ordered the open faced steak salad sandwich and the garden salad with chicken and they tasted very good. Toilets are for paying customers and they’re clean. We’ll be getting coffee and cakes on the way out. They’re closed on Christmas and Boxing Day. They have decaf coffee too and Icecream
M.
Great breakfast! We had the eggs and bacon and the French toast with bananas. Perfectly cooked the flavors mixed beautifully. If we were passing back through I would stop again. The coffee was good and strong too!
B.
A lovely cafe with beautiful garden and cabin house, very great place for take a rest! Food was so good and staff are super friendly~ We are every enjoy the moment staying here.
T.
Great place to stop on the way to Tauranga. Gorgeous garden with birds all around, rain cover and kids corner. Lots of interesting spaces, ranging from sunny outdoors to cosy indoor. I had the honey nut slice which was delicious! Busy cafe but doesnt feel crowded. Highly recommend.
E.
Average coffee in our opinion in a nice and elegant setting and garden for a break on route to or from Auckland. They sell also local jams and manuka honey and vegetables
F.
After a long drive I needed coffee, and boy did I get it! Awesome flat white and a delicious coffee slice. Good choice of food, and different settings to enjoy it. Top marks, ladies :)
M.
Nice place to stop for a coffee. Kids ran around and got drinks they liked too.
Second visit, no kids, just the baby. Lunch was great. Worth the trip.
C.
I am really impressed. I went for a late breakfast with my partner. The staff were friendly, there was a nice atmosphere, and our meals were very generous, cooked to perfection, served nicely, and the coffee excellent. We had a perfect coconut and lemon cake with cream. Left feeling very happy :-)
D.
Great place for a lunch stop, tasty food. Light and airy. Off road parking. Some traffic noise.
C.
I love coming here. Set in lovely surroundings which you can tell are tended to with care. The food is very nice however it is quite pricey (hence 4 stars instead of 5). The staff are friendly. The selection of food from the menu and the cabinet is also excellent. Even though this cafe is set next to a main road, it is still very relaxing to sit in.
The best bits for me are that it's kid friendly, dog friendly and LGBTQ-friendly. All very inclusive indeed! I'd recommend this over almost all other roadside cafes I have tried. 😁
M.
Great spot to stop while on a drive! Good coffee, meat pies, and baked treats! Huge outdoor patio and fun staff. Enjoy!
R.
Nice garden to sit, eat, drink and rest on the road. Carrot cake once of the best, which I had. Satisfaction.
P.
I'd driven past this place so often in the truck and thought to myself 'that looks a nice cafe', but could never stop. So morning in the van I decided to drop in for breakfast.
Well it was worth the wait and I will make more of an effort to stop in future.
Stunning peaceful setting and you don't even notice SH1 is pretty much right next to you, the food is very good and in good portions and it is served to you by very friendly people.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
🙂
T.
Great for a pit stop. Nice big outdoor shaded areas. Great gluten free selection as well.
E.
The ambience is amazing! A nice place to stop for a some some food, coffee and a break.
V.
Good cafe off SH27 just South of SH2 intersection. Being converted from a garden centre it has a rambling rustic feel and great atmosphere, quite popular. It is not a Mt Eden/Kingsland/Ponsonby style and doesn't try to be. It is a good effort with made on premises baking, cabinet selection and plenty of menu options. Well made Bruno Rossi coffee with a decent sized large takeout cup available. Burger was one of the tastiest I have had anywhere. Nowhere to stop with a truck unfortunately
G.
Pleasant surrounds and great seating outdoors
Good rest rooms and helpful staff.
C.
Great spot for a pie on a road trip. Quaint, with quick service and a nice atmosphere
R.
Good coffee, nice sunny setting. Can't judge food as i only ordered a toasted sandwich (that I could have made better at home yes).
B.
Location, outlook and cafe ambience very nice. Meat pie was high quality with good steak and gravy with the right amount of pepper. Long black was average but within the normal range for most cafes that don't specialise in coffee. Lots of parking. Friendly and efficient staff. Signage not so friendly with at least 8 signs telling me not what not to do. I have driven past this cafe a lot but don't stop after stopping once and being shocked by the price of a long Black. Having lived in the country now for 18 months I appreciate the economic reality that drives prices higher outside of Auckland and Wellington. Most of the signage was ok but the sign teeming me to each my hands lost a rating star. There are two cafes on SH 27 North of Tahuna, this one would be my preference.
J.
Food was really great and fresh. We had a BLT and the roast vege wrap (toasted) both with fresh ingredients and were delicious. Coffee was also good!
The garden is beautiful, peaceful and lovely to sit in on a sunny day!
R.
I am assuming that one of the owners served us , as she offered us an option the staff didn't. The food was OK although the cabinet selection was a bit limited ,was busy when we were there and not enough tables, some large tables only had one customer , maybe some smaller tables would be good.
B.
Running under covid rules, there is no food being prepared apart from toasties. The coffee was not up to par. Will not go again until it gets back to normal.
R.
What a good place to stop! Glad we found it today. It will be our regular stop from now on. The Bruno Rossi coffee is up there with the best quality coffee brands available. Look out for the pies, they are great! Seating inside is comfortable in the air conditioned cafe. Outside tables under a high roof and all the bird noises give this place a specially relaxing atmosphere. The friendly and efficient staff make this the ideal stop between Auckland and Tauranga or Hamilton.
*****Highly recomended*****
S.
Great cafe, we've been here twice.
B.
Not as great an experience as our previous visit a year before. Seems like the kitchen became a gathering place for staff gossip.. not ideal when it's all open plan: quite unprofessional actually. But the coffee and eats were good.
B.
Hmmmm, reading other reviews it appears people are impressed. I found the setting pleasant and staff friendly. The food was very average, prices overly expensive for the quality. Nothing really bad, my experience suggests the owners where giving it a go and trying their best but not really capable of anything award winning.
F.
Good place to sop for lunch on the trip to Auckland. Lovely pastry on the interesting pies and sausage rolls baked on the premises. Nice coffee. We have stopped in here previously. Noted that they cater for people with dogs.
K.
Stopped here for lunch on our way on a road trip. Good home cook food from the cabinet, helpful staff and lovely looking cafe. I really enjoyed the chicken, leek and potato pie.
Would definitely be back if i am driving through the area.
r.
Very nice and delicious meal that I had in native tree, highly recommend
S.
Lovely coffee along with orange and date muffin, great service too. 👍
h.
We always stop for lunch or morning tea here on our way to Auckland from Te Aroha where we reside. Great assortment of tasty food in the cabinet or from menu board. Lovely friendly staff and usually very busy but that does not compromise their speedy service.
R.
Peaceful location just of the main highway, perfect for an interlude on your journey. Suggestion: be a little more proactive in asking seated guests if they'd like another coffee, especially those seated alone, also helps revenue.
P.
Cool & convenient place on the road to/from Auckland. Friendly staff. Hot chocolate and strawberry thick shake were delicious. Unfortunately, the coffee was pretty bad that day; the long black tasted burned and the Americano was very watered down. Also subtracting another star for using plastic straws and lids. :/ I'd stop again for the nice courtyard and convenient location, but I hope by next time they'll stop using disposal plastic and fix their coffee.
P.
Friendly staff nice food.
B.
Very delicious Fig slice, tasty coffee, lovely spacious shady outdoor seating area.
Slow service, in our opinion – had to wait easily 10 minutes for 1 coffee (although after a few days in NZ we are starting to realise this is quite common here. We are English and not used to having to wait more than 2 or 3 minutes for coffee when ordered at the counter. OK when you have time to relax, but not good at a roadside cafe. Toilets seem to get very busy too).
M.
Great home made pies and slices, good coffee. Really nice setting with comfortable indoor and outdoor tables. Space for the kids to play. Service wasn't fantastic bit we did arrive on a very busy day right on lunch time. Will definitely be stopping by again!
D.
Lovely lunch on a beautiful Autumn day. Food and service was amazing. We always have the delicious pies and salad. Frozen pies are also available to take away. Great offering of cakes, muffins and a variety of other food. Lovely welcoming garden area to relax & enjoy. Staff always friendly & helpful. Thanks Guys😘👍
N.
Really good coffee and nice little garden
B.
Very interesting place to visit with old memorabilia and great coffee. Lovely courtyard. Child and dog friendly.
W.
Good food very helpful staff.
D.
Excellent burger, beautiful place to have a rest !
C.
Was very impressed with my experience at the Cafe Staff very friendly and helpful and went above and beyond to help. Thank you! Will definitely be back
S.
Fabulous home-made roast lamb pie with just the right amount of mint sauce. ...delicious..!!
D.
This place has morphed over the years from a plant nursery, come cafe, to a dedicated cafe. The change has been very good for the discerning traveller as the natural outdoor ambiance has been enhanced and the food definitely the hero. The pies are delicious, the cakes superb. There is an extensive selection of jams , chutneys and sauces for that someone you are visiting or that special little thank you to a friend. I forgot to mention that the service is efficient and above all, friendly.
R.
Fantastic stop for a family with 4 young children. Has a cute cubby house at the back and lots of space to run around. Food was ok; however the place itself was a great relaxing atmosphere. Spotless restrooms too. So overall a great stop on our trip back to Auckland.
L.
Awesome place to stop first a break. We visit every second Sunday for breakfast. Food is well presented, Pies are amazing. Inside outside dining and pet friendly. Take time to visit, you won't be disappointed.
J.
Super cute little cafe right off the side of the highway. Amazing breakfast sandwich and my husband had the steak and mushroom pie and said it was amazing also! They also have an area for your doggies too!!
K.
The home made pies are very good, prices have gone up since I was here last. Gluten free options are available. Lots of seating outside under a water proof cover that was tested when I was there. The queue for the two unisex toilets can take a while when the place is busy. But over all a lovely place with a nice feel.
S.
What an amazing find on a trip to Tauranga! Beautiful little cafe with the nicest staff ever providing a fantastic service. The food and coffee were both very good. Do yourself a favour and stop by 😁
b.
I was really appreciative of the trouble they took to return my iPad which I left accidentally. We had only stopped in for a coffee and yet they shipped it back to me no charge! Impressive. We were lucky enough to be there when the Wisteria was blooming. It is a lovely little oasis. Not like the usual highway pit stops.
M.
Friendly staff. Lovely food & coffee. Always worth a stop & see. Good place to meet friends or a business meeting. Lots of tables inside & out that catch the sun.
A.
Great food and good coffee with friendly helpful staff. Very pleasant outdoor setting as well as indoor tables. I often stop there when I travel between home and Auckland it's a gr8 halfway break for me. Ann Waih
A.
Just ate lunch here. Absolutely outstanding! We've been driving length of North Island trying places and this one has made my day. Beautiful plentiful and sophisticated chicken salad with warm roast meat and delicate blackberry dressing. My partner had chicken potatoe n leek pie...it came with a salad and quinoa chutney. We saw them carefully making their pies behind the counter attending to detail. Service was genuine and inviting. Thanks Native Tree cafe. Top notch!
J.
Food great as usual. Lovely to sit outside in beautiful surroundings with our four pawed ones.
C.
I have always loved this café and have used it for years for regular trips to Auckland. But was disappointed yesterday. The inside seating was closed by 2.30pm on a cold afternoon. Was not pleasant sitting outside in the cold. I understand they need to clean up at the end of the day but at least a hour and half before they close is a bit over the top.
M.
Great coffee & homemade pies, in a quirky setting
J.
Pretty good for a country caf. A big food selection is backed up by speedy service and enough skill to make a coffee properly.
The food offerings are simpler than you'd see in the city but still make for a good breakfast or dinner. Lots of space makes it ideal for big groups, and fences ensure kids won't get out.
Also have a good range of food products to augment the pantry.
Go here if you're passing through, perhaps don't hold out for it though.
r.
Delightful roadside cafe where I stopped for lunch on my way to Auckland. There was a choice for my vegetarian needs + irresistible sweets + coffee. On recommendation I gave Matamata a miss for lunch and was pleased to find this place. In turn, I am pleased to recommend a stop here.
L.
Lovely outdoor area. Lots of space and garden setting. Good food, pies and coffee. Well worth a visit. Plenty of gluten free options too.
M.
Nice place to stop coming from Auckland. GF and vegan available. Good coffee. Can sit in the garden.
M.
Steak tough in the open steak sandwich because small pieces of meat had been cut before putting on grill. Had they have fried a whole piece of steak and then cut it it would have been tender. Nice setting though.
m.
Very pleasant atmosphere. Coming home from Auckland airport and desperate for a coffee. Called in to this wee gem of a place! Lovely outdoor seating. Dog friendly , great service.
O.
One of the best Cafe on our journey between Tauranga and Auckland.
B.
Nice and relaxed cafe setting. Good place for families while out on a road trip. Nice shaded play area as well as tables and chairs for the adults. Parking also good just behind the store pretty secure too.
M.
We had heard some negative feedback about Native Tree, but was mostly from some time back. Pleased to say it was all wrong. Service was quick and friendly, food was awesome, coffee also great. Would definitely recommend, and would definitely go back.
H.
Love this place! Always stop off here for morning tea or lunch on the way ftom Te Atoha to Auckland. Amazing menu choices, great coffee and very efficient service. You can sit inside, on covered deck or outside under umbrellas. Pretty busy with travelling public but a lot of staff to cope. 2 toilets available too. Cannot fault food or service here.
J.
Lovely service, so friendly
M.
Food slow in coming out considering there was no other customers. Food was good but a bit overpriced.
J.
We stop here on most trips to Auckland and really like it. Classic kiwi cafe with the right age group running it. Has that good homemade food feel.
A.
Great homemade meat pies!
L.
Nice range of farm produce, pickles, jams, dressings. Didn't try the coffee this time but they have a full barista machine. Pleasant seating areas both inside and outdoors.
L.
Coffee good, big brekkie good, only two average sized fritters and a pile of undressed salad on the corn fritter dish. It was all ok but probably would not stop here again.
W.
Wonderful, warm friendly service and great food.
Fantastic atmosphere. ❤️ 👐🏿 😊
J.
Quaint little road stop with a relaxed garden vibe and indoor area. The girls (staff) had us well looked after. Driving up from Napier i saw photos of the big breakie and was keen to try. Despite arriving at 12.40 pm the menu said breakfast finished at 11am, Selene was prifesdional and happy to accomodate, thank you for outstanding customer service and a pleasant experience. The breakie like the review was 5 star!!! I must stop on your way to Auckland.
D.
Good feel about the place with excellent service and coffee, the food was very good with some really nice homemade pies. Recommend
F.
Great half way stop between Auckland and Rotorua. Home made delicious pies and good coffee
A.

M.
Amazing food, lovely staff and great location! We had a massive family lunch there today and they accommodated us amazingly. Thanks so much :)
L.
Love the setting. Right by main road but far enough away to not even realize it. Food good. Has a range of preserves that are great for gifts. Flavours that are a bit different.
V.
Stopped on a whim on journey back from Rotorua and so glad we did. Great coffee, tea and cakes. Wish i had bought more to take home!! Would highly recommend 😊
S.
Lovely setting, friendly staff, clean bathrooms. Had a couple of vegetarian options which was great.
W.
Rustic, quaint, retro. Lovely spot with beautiful outdoor area and airflow on a hot day. Reasonable prices and lovely food
P.
Good coffee, but the service was not great. The staff were clearly not focused on their customers, but on talking amongst themselves
B.
Great atmosphere. Coffee good. Didn't eat, other's food looked good.
A little convenient oasis. I recommend you stop here
G.
Just had a lovely lunch at this our usual stop when heading Nth. Wonderful home made pies and very fresh, large blueberry muffins. Thankyou.
A.
Often stop here when traveling. Nice range of muffins, scones, pies and other offerings. Good coffee. Staff very helpful.
A.
Great place to stop on the road nice food. Would give 5 stars if they wouldn't have started spraying fly repellant/poison nearby while we were eating. A bit of a shame, but they stopped and apologised when they noticed us.
A.
Very nice little cafe with an indoor and outdoor area.
The coffee is good and food great too! Price is on the high side but for a cafe in the middle of nowhere it's worth it
F.
Friendly staff, yummy pie and carrot cake- would recommend 👍
C.
Road side cafe with a beautiful garden. They have a short menu but food is freshly made and tasty. Love the meat pie and ice mocha.
C.
Lovely ambience with indoor outdoor settings, amazing eggs bene and that bacon was ohlala. Will be one of my regular stops when passing through. Great job
E.
Really enjoyed out stop in at Native Tree Cafe. The range of CuppaCoffee cups brought with a free coffee were a treat. Tasty food and good coffee. Thanks for the hospitality!
J.
Gorgeous little cafe found on the way to Mata Mata to visit the Hobbit movie set. It's around half way from Auckland to Mata Mata which was the perfect stop off point for a bite to eat for breaky and a coffee. Great espresso with my scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. Yummmmm!
J.
always good country fare.
staff busy with services delivery. Car needs attention & do up
B.
Very nice setting, lunch food selection a little limited. Suitable for a snack stop.
R.
Always a lovely coffee and food when I stop here! Recommended.
t.
My favourite stop on the way to/from Auckland. Coffee always at the same high standard, nice food and lots of GF choices as well. Promt service.

Yummy home made pies, not hard to find, plenty of parking.

Amazing. Great food and great service. We had a large group and everyone was served quickly and correctly. Would definitely recommend

Steak tough in the open steak sandwich because small pieces of meat had been cut before putting on grill. Had they have fried a whole piece of steak and then cut it it would have been tender. Nice setting though.
