Reviews of LKNZ Lodge & Cafe
We were looking to do the Alpine Crossing hike. Location was perfect especially that there are pickup shuttles from in front of the motel. Customer service is top notch. They were very friendly and helpful. Got us everything we need. Room is very clean with comfortable bed. All the shared spaces are also clean. We really enjoyed our stay. Shoutout to the team 😊
Awesome spot and location is perfect for walking into town. Rooms are basic and you pay for what you get. Make sure to read wether it is a private or shared bathroom as I missed that detail when booking but got it resolved easily even though it was after hours!
LKNZ staff always go above and beyond when we come in for a meal. They are very friendly and polite whether we have 2 or 10 in our group. Being locals, we love having a place to go in any weather and having a family friendly cafe is an absolute bonus. The coffee is delicious and the food is so reasonably priced, portion sizes are large and the kids are always happy.
Thanks for the wonderful experience! ♡
Really wish this place was open after 3pm so we xan come for dinner and take advantage ofbthe great choice.
Had breakfast at the Cafe even though we stayed at a different place. Another guest next to us was very happy with his stay he said. Saw that EV charger is available for guests.
Breakfast at the Cafe was easy for adults and kids with nice variety and yummy food.
We'll be back for lunch to try the soups.
Happy to recommend.
Walls are extra thin and you can hear your neighbours (bad) music choices. When asked to move us to some other spot the reception insisted that we pay for the difference - fair enough except they should mention extra thin walls as a feature of the room we booked so I know what I am choosing. Afterhour reception guy was helpful but not quite from hospitality industry - got a little worked up when I said to him that I’m having to move unwillingly and therefore unfair that I’m being asked to pay the difference. Pathways to the spread out accommodation buildings are not lit so trip hazard when it gets dark. Good walking distance to eateries. Cool vibes in the tūī building though. Maybe my expectations were different looking at all the positive reviews. It feels like it’s run by students. Would not recommend staying here.
EDIT: The morning staff were awesome to apologise for the events in the night and offered us coffee and sauna visit. I think the bottomline is: i think that this is a facility for student like crowd - probably not for a couple looking for a comfortable stay. Revising my rating from 1 to 3 based on the overall experience.
I stayed for two nights in a shared room and I thought the place was great value. I was impressed with the amenities for the price, the spa pools were a welcome sight after completing the Tongariro crossing and the shower was hot with good pressure. Also, the caretaker was as close as you'll get to the real life Kramer from Seinfeld, great value.
Lovely food, many options. Friendly staff. Cosy veranda on wet days
The accomodation at the lodge is nice and I would stay there again, but waiting 20 minutes for one takeaway coffee in the attached cafe is a bit ridiculous, and a $6 medium coffee is tiny.
I'd definitely recommend staying here especially if you want to take a break from a long drive.
Beautiful clean lodge with great beds to rest your weary heads at night. The only little thing was the heating last night was off leaving a cold lounge and bedroom. I called reception and they were onto it straight away by bringing us a heater for our room. Thank you so much.
Lovely staff, we finished off by having a yummy breakfast before heading up to Whakapapa ski fields. Hi five. 😊 Thanks
I came for brunch 2 days in a row with my friends. There were about 8-9 of us. The food was delicious. The yummiest waffles I've had. The service was super friendly and they were really onto it. A few of us also commented how quickly they got us our drinks and food. Thank you for having us and we'll be back next time we are down.
We are so thankful to the new staff (M) who actually helped us last night because we were supposed to sleep in car at the opposite holiday park but unfortunately it was full as we usually just do walk-in once we reach. We were stopping outside LKNZ to check if there’s any available beds for us (a couple) as the light written “vacancy” but the website is not very friendly then suddenly the reception light up! We quickly pop over to knock on the door though we were afraid that we might be turn away as it was around 9-10pm but thankfully the staff didn’t turn us down and still help us look for available beds and led us to our room. Just that the bedsheet got a little of blue/purple stain (probably from color runs) but overall the trio bedroom saved our night!
This place is great. The cost is very affordable. The rooms are fine nothing extravagant, but the service is awesome. The cafe is delicious and highly recommend a hokey pokey milkshake. There is a really nice new hot tub (2 actually) and very clean sauna. Both were delightful when the weather was frightful. Lastly, I left my phone on the couch in the cafe. An employee tracked down a contact on the phone to determine whose phone it is. Then she emailed me to let me know that I had left. Lastly, she charged the battery and express mailed it to me the next day. That's the best lost and found service I have ever had. Thank you LKNZ folks!
Loved our overnight stay. Location was perfect, the hot tub was the perfect wind down and the bed was super comfy. Loved the warm room and it was super clean!! The staff were very welcoming on arrival and departure. Well definitely be back too stay again!
The service was pleasant. The decor was nice, clean and tidy. The food was ok blueberry waffles was good they had alot of blueberries. The waffles were lovely. Unfortunately the eggs tasted like they were cooked in the microwave which made them very dry and the coffee wasn't very good however the prices were unbeatable. The hash browns were great not fatty which was great. They make the best smoothies. The creamy mushrooms were very good. Thank you for having us.
Friendly and efficient staff who work hard and succeed at making guests welcome. Kitchen, bathrooms all well appointed, v clean and tidy.
Dorm room was fine, but really only for sleeping as quite small. But bed was comfortable and WHITE sheets spotless.
And the heating was so good. Been to many backpackers in winter where I've had to wear high altitude gear to keep warm. But here the heating was generous.
I'll definitely be back should the snow gods smile
We turned up late and they still made room for us. Our queen room was super clean, comfortable and quiet. Great value at $99 including en suite and basic kitchen facilities. Highly recommend this place. Very friendly and helpful new owners !
Amazing service! This is what hospitality is all about. We arrived just as they were closing, fiends for some quick food.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful in giving advice about good local eateries.
The thick shakes were also very much enjoyed!
Amazing place to stay! Super clean and tidy! We stayed in a private double room, was very warm and had everything we needed. Shared spaces were good, met lots of new people. We also wanted to stay an extra night and they quickly sorted a new room for us (gave us a good deal) and let us transfer over before check in. Great service, good price, we will be returning!
Awesome place to stay! We booked the entire Mountain View Lodge at LKNZ for the weekend to celebrate our son's 21st birthday. Excellent facilities, with everything you need in the kitchens including large fridge/freezers. Comfortable lounge area to sit around a chat or watch a movie. Super comfortable beds and excellent bathroom facilities. Everything was immaculately clean and so welcoming. We will be back!
Friendly and quick reception arrangements. The room was excellent. Beautiful view. Well designed, well equipped and clean. The packed lunch for the crossing was good value for money. The only minor comment would be that the continental breakfast was adequate but a bit ordinary.
Perfectly positioned for easy walking into town, or a speedy car ride up the road to the mountain, this is a great hostel to stay in. I was in one of the upgrade type rooms in the main building and found it to be very clean and comfortable. Staff were very helpful also. Didn’t get to try it but I noticed that there is hot tub spa which would be super handy after a day on the slopes or walk my trails.
Our stay was very pleasant. We where well looked after.
When I asked for some food while the kitchen was already closed at night 8pm. They opened the kitchen an served me an very delicious soup an bread turned on the tv There breakfast is generous an very tasty. Overall a very nice experience, will recommend to friends an family.
This room was clean, had great facilities in a small space. This room is well priced.
The support facilities at the Lodge are excellent and the location is close to all restaurants and services in Ohakune.
The view in the morning from outside the room is outstanding, Ruapehu shining in the morning sun.
I have re-booked after using an alternative motel for the last twenty years.
Loved the quality of toiletries .
We Stayed at LKNZ to go skiing and it was amazing! we stayed in the small rooms which was great as we were out all day and out for dinner in the evenings. The Breakfast is tasty and th coffee sets you up for a great day on the mountain. After skiing you can relax in the Hot Tub and the Sauna. Location is perfect! Thanks to Linda and her Team.
Handy place to local bars and restaurants with good facilities and friendly staff.
Checking in was easy, the guy was friendly enough and able to confirm all our important questions.
Nice clean place and great shower after a 20 km walk on a mountain.
Spa was awesome, wished I had more time to try out the sauna, but was limited to one night stay.
Big Breakfast was a highlight, all the best foods combined into one breakfast...
I would stay here again and recommend it based on the handy location to the main road
Thanks
My husband and I stayed on a two night package which included a private room with ensuite, cooked breakfasts, Old Coach Road Trail transfers to Horopito and use of the spa pools.||Due to urgent surgery and an eight week recovery recovery, we had to postpone our break away for two months and Steve was understanding and helpful when I contacted him and was happy to extend the deal until my husband had recovered. ||Our room was cosy, clean and comfortable and there was a clear view of Mount Ruapehu from the deck - we sat and watched the sunset and the colours reflected on the snowy mountain - it was magic.||The breakfasts were made while we waited and delivered to our table hot and fresh. The staff were helpful and happy to go the extra mile. ||The lock up storage facility for our bikes was an added bonus and everything was in walking or biking distance so we didn't need to use the car.||All in all this is a great place to stay with friendly and helpful staff.
Wonderful place to stay! The rooms were warm and cozy and best of all, Dry! The living areas were fun and gave us plenty of stuff to do while off the mountain. The staff were very friendly, and the food at the cafe was delicious! If you get the chance to have a spa and a sauna after your skiing, you won't regret it. Thank you so much for the wonderful stay, it really made our trip alot more magical :)
Great nights sleep here with excellent facilities. It was very cold, though each morning you would not have noticed as the building and rooms were warm enough to walk around in tee and shorts. The host was great as well and knowledgeable of the tourist attractions and the town. It had a cafe joined to it which was very convenient and parking is directly outside your building.
Stayed in the Mountain View Lodge, 1 parent + 2 teenagers, we had a room with shared bathroom. Really happy with the experience, the bedroom to bathroom ratio seemed to be about right. Kitchens were great, upstairs lounge was cosy, double glazed window made the room warm and quiet. Everything was very clean. Friendly helpful service at reception too.
Hard to fault. LKNZ is well priced, very clean and has good communal areas and a drying room for ski gear. The hot tubs are a nice additional touch. I didn't try the food but they look like they have a good range of brunch and evening options. Would happily stay again.
Fantastic little cafe a bit off the beaten track. Wonderfully friendly staff, delicious food, good portions and great prices. Would recommend to anyone for breakfast brunch or lunch.
My daughter's toastie was amazing, the nachos were great, and my mushroom dish was amazing. Thank you!
Bought a grab one voucher for two nights, included breakfast for two mornings unlimited hot tub and wifi access for the good price. We had a really lovely time, staff were really friendly and helpful, top class breakfast service had alot of variety and the meals were hearty sizes and delicious! The bedroom itself was modern and clean with a comfy bed. As it was raining majority of our stay we spent alot of our time in the accommodation but we felt very comfortable the entire time.
Stayed in a double room with shared bathroom.
Bathroom facilities were very clean and only shared with one other room, bed was very comfortable and the room tidy.
Fan was supplied to keep room cool but unfortunately because the room got the afternoon sun we needed to keep windows open too which was a bit of a pain due to noise from the trucks going past.
Couldn’t have asked for better for the price and location for what we wanted to do!
Would definitely stay here again :)
Great food and great presentation with very reasonable prices. The smoothies are yummy and healthy. Thai pumpkin soup was delicious and the kids loved their waffles with bacon, egg and maple syrup. The staff were very friendly.
We were really pleased with our private room with ensuite. The bed was comfortable and the shower was great. Everything looked newly renovated and was very clean. The kitchenette was well supplied for us to make our lunches for the tongariro crossing and have a coffee in the morning. We also booked the spa pool for after our hike. Great value and friendly staff helping us out when we arrived late at night.
