Reviews of The Refinery
V.
Great food, coffee and atmosphere. I love the retro vibe. A must do when in Paeroa.
P.
Great space, and the decor and ambience are superb, especially if you are a fan of the 1970s. The coffee was very good and the cakes were probably very bad for my health but tasted amazing. Nice staff, good menu without too much excitement and the pictures on the walls are enough to keep you busy whole waiting. Ever so slightly out the way but worth the detour.
R.
Great coffee, great food, cool retro vibe.. This place is a hidden gem in Paeroa!
K.
Found this amazing gem down the back streets while in Paeroa.
The 70's decor is amazing. We only stopped for a hot drink and a delicious almond croissant. Good service, friendly staff and great indoor and outdoor area.
I highly recommend coming here if your in the area.
J.
I ordered the Low Carb bowl with corned beef. The roast veg were fine but the corned beef was awful. The beef was the toughest I have ever been served, cut along the grain and full of gristle. The ginger crunch was nice though.
S.
Fish kedgeree. Absolutely delicious! Always great food and coffee at The Refinery
L.
Great cafe for cyclists with a bike parking rack in the garden and plenty of tables. Good coffee and such a wide assortment of sweet and savoury foods to choose from.
r.
A terrific find in Paeroa. After walking up and down the main strip my husband and I spotted an interesting sign for the Refinery. We followed the trail down to the back road where we discovered a quirky store front housing a small queue. The menu was perfect a mix of old, modern and one that covered my strict dietary requirements.
The true delight was to come when the food arrived. What a treat!!! Both meals were OUTSTANDING. It was one of those occasions you enjoy your lunch so much you don't want to finish eating, despite being stuffed full. I can highly recommend this treasure if your in the area. Keep up the awesome job team
V.
I really enjoy the atmosphere and nice food & coffee, service is friendly, busy place also. If you have a chance to visit Paeroa, don’t miss this Cafe.
W.
Had the cornbeef sandwich. It was quite nicely flavoured but the bread was overly toasted. My partner got the breakfast curry rice salmon dish and was much better.
D.
There's no competition - for the best coffee in Paeroa head to The Refinery.
I only drink double espresso - but this place has a good selection of milk based coffee beverages, along with teas. Alternatively - you have fresh juices, smoothies etc
While you're there - enjoy something sweet or savoury to eat.
If you're in the mood - you can choose the music and play some records 🎶
There's even a good selection of vintage furniture and homewares to buy.
A.
Quite a surprise, from the outside this building appears derelict but enter through the little door and inside is a cool retro cafe with very nice selection of both sweet and savoury food. Lovely ladies serving, loads of tables to sit at and lots of fun timeless bric-a-brac items and historic photos to look at. Well worth a visit. Located in the back street with plenty of parking on the streets.
D.
Great little sandwich and brunch shop. The coffee and Cuban sandwich were great, and the sandwich size was very generous. They also served breakfast options like Eggs Benedict and scrambles. The restaurant had a cozy feel to it with some unique decor and good music. The tables and furniture were all different giving it a homey vibe. Very nice staff on hand.
A.
Each to their own but for me the smoky beans did not go with the breakfast grill and the sausage was a tad too spicy for me. Unusual place. Nice in a querkye way. Staff where very good.
S.
Food here is amazing - kedgeree was amazing as were the creamy mushrooms. Great vegetarian options. Good service and lots of tables including some outside in dappled shade. Highly recommended.
F.
Fabulously quirky cafe with the best food and atmosphere in Paeroa! My Turkish breakfast was outstanding and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting this cafe! Regards to Lulu our new canine friend and cafe guard dog :-)
L.
Good food. Outdoors area has Italian villa vibes. Would recommend.
A.
Themed decor and furniture in keeping with the antique town character of Paeroa. Plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. Peaceful surroundings opposite sports fields and not on a busy street. Tasty mochaccino!
N.
What a beautiful hidden eatery jewel here in Paeroa. The service was great, staff are friendly and the food was seriously good.
R.
Fantastic food and great coffee. Quick service even though they were quite busy. Definitely recommend and our go-to place in Paeroa.
J.
Nice and relaxed atmosphere, classic pop rock played from vinyl (impressive vinyl collection!). Decent coffee and tasty quiche.
Important: kitchen closes at 14:30, and menu food is not available later. Don't even try ordering a toastie at 14:32 - you will hear that "no way, so tired, working from 7:30"
N.
Great cafe in Paeroa which I randomly found! So many vegan options!!! My takeaway salad was amazing. Rather costly though. I got a slice and salad for $17.90 and salad was quite small. Made up for it with flavour though. Slice was ok. Could have had more choc on top
J.
Lovely outdoor table, delicious food, great coffee, and friendly efficient service. Most enjoyable.
J.
Favourite place for me and my dog. Staff are amazing, great food and atmosphere. We keep coming back
D.
Love everything about this cafe the staff coffee food and Paris like atmosphere outside garden sitting area
Can’t wait to go back
P.
Nice cafe. Little hidden treasure in Paeroa. Bloody fantastic coffee. Cool atmosphere and nice outdoor area
S.
Great place, nice food but coffees are too small.
A.
We pre Googled cafes in paeroa and this place came up. We arrived mid Sunday lunchtime rush. Despite a heaving clientele we were surprised to be served very quickly. I had eggs which were done to perfection and my partner had sardines which came in a tin. Very Kooky . The cafe is in a great space large and interesting with lots of things to keep the eyes interested. Def worth a visit
A.
Great atmosphere and delicious food and coffee
T.
Amazing little find. Great food, friendly staff. Lovely garden setting. Highly recommended.
J.
Amazing food! The baked brie with honey and sourdough was to die for.
P.
10 / 10 cafe. Loved the atmosphere, very relaxing, I'll be going back. 👍👍☕☕
S.
The food was 25 minutes late, but was very nice once it actually arrived.
s.
A really great cafe in Paeroa. Great coffee, good food, and lovely atmosphere.
S.
I was impressed from start to finish with this place. The outside is lovely, the interior is interesting and eclectic and the chairs and tables comfortable. The wait staff are cool and my lord the food! I had a red fruit slice and it was one of the best I've had in a long time. The pastry was delicious and they served it with real cream which Iis a huge deal for me. Nice teas too.
F.
Great vegan bowl. Loved the courtyard shade of grape vines, eclectic staff
M.
Excellent choice for food, and great coffee. Service was fast and friendly.
r.
Love eating here, really nice food and some different things as well
C.
Friendly, helpful staff, great decor & delicious cheesecake. Coffee was a touch too strong for my taste in the only negative.
T.
Loved it. Always do. My favourite cafe.
T.
Very nice place, yummy food and great coffee, but expensive but worth the money
T.
Relaxing atmosphere inside and out. Interesting building while you enjoy your delicious lunch.
D.
Wonderful place, wonderful food, wonderful coffee, fantastic amazing staff 10/10
J.
Great Cafe. Very 70s with music via records. Menu has some great different options and the coffee was excellent. Will definitely be back. RECOMMENDED!
K.
Fab Cafe. Great coffee, and try the orange syrup cake with pistachios if you get a chance
A.
Outstanding cafe: the kedgeree was one of my top 5 breakfasts of all time. The coffee is above average. Nice atmosphere, but as it's probably the best in the area be prepared for a bit of a delay when they are flat out.
K.
This was such a great cafe, loved the huge open space with relaxing atmosphere, and feels so cool.
The cafe has a great selection of food and treats. I had the Kedgeree, it was wonderful, one of the best I have had.
Great music in the background, retro furniture, and lots of interesting books and facts to read everywhere.
This was a comfy armchair for a cafe, just need my slippers, and everything is sweet.
B.
Friendly super atmosphere inside this big shed, great range of food, lovely GF delicious almond orange slice...thank you
J.
This cafe has a great vibe, with excellent cakes and coffee.
E.
Food is not too bad. Superb coffee. Awesome ambience.
N.
Tasty, well presented food and good service.
N.
Stopped here on our way through. Great retro space, amazing food! Had the scone and vege quiche. Huge cabinet of home made sweet & savoury.
H.
Fancier than I was expecting! I was initially dubious of the menu but after the food came I was very pleasantly surprised. Really nice atmosphere and staff. Would recommend
C.
Great little spot in a quiet part of town. Had delicious creamy mushroom, honestly one of the best I have ever had. The Chef even did a special batch for us because they had sold out. Coffee was top tier. Interior was really cool 1970s vibe with comfy chairs. Highly recommend
P.
Brilliant coffee & delicious eats, possibly Paeroa’s best kept secret.
D.
Great place fresh food good coffee vintage ambience
c.
Excellent food, love their vintage style decor
P.
Great charm. Great food and great staff. It doesn't look like much from the outside but well worth the visit. Not on the main street so hunt it out you won't be disappointed.
T.
At first when I got the Rebeun sandwich my thought was... I paid $20 dollars for this! I thought well it off to McD after this.
Then I cut my sandwich in half and started to eat. It was delicious, by the time I eat the sandwich and had my carrot cake and drank my kombucha I felt full and satisfied (even though I think a bag of chip would have been good too) still a few hours later I'm still full and satisfied. Very happy that we came here for lunch. Yes it is on the higher end but was worth it.
Total cost of lunch for two $64.
S.
Loved the ambience of this place. Its unique and comfortable. The chocolate tart was delicious. Would recommend to try it.
L.
Very good food - great gluten free options.
A.
Great place to stop even just for a coffee.
A.
Best big breakfast in a long time
S.
Wow! I have to say my latest visit to The Refinery was the best to date. It was busy. There was a lot to choose from. My choice of Raspberry and Lime Scone was such a delightful surprise. I couldn't have chosen better. A little bit of sweetness with sprinkles of sugar crystals . Delicious.
The cup of hot Lemon, Honey and Ginger was spicy and warming on a miserable wintery day. Perfectly spicy with the added cinnamon stick and a bit of lime.
L.
We stopped by after a long hike, tired and hungry, happy to eat anything that was vegan even if it was just chips or a plain salad, but what we did get blew our expectations out of the water. Both meals were substantial, beautifully presented, full of flavour, and nourishing in that way that you just feel so much better after you’ve eaten. Not to mention that it is very cute and colourful inside. I would be back and recommend anyone else to do the same.
J.
Excellent. Great atmosphere. Not too loud, with good NZ music played on, yes, a record player. And the coffee was one of the best I have had for a while.
P.
We had the Reuben sandwich and the coffee cheesecake. Both were delicious! Also loved the ambience. We will definitely be back!
C.
Great food and coffee, great choice of music ( vinyl recirds) .love the retro vibe.
A.
Retro style design. Good food and service.
J.
Best pork pie I've ever had.

Great food and wonderful retro atmosphere.
G.
Love going to this place for food and coffee.
Staff are friendly, food looks and tastes amazing.
D.
Very good place to eat and have a coffee and the coffee is great as well as the food. Plenty of room and seating. Menu selection is worth a look. Great service and staff are polite.
N.
Awesome coffee well worth visiting
S.
Great food, good coffee and excellent ambiance.
M.
Always top notch food, coffee and service!
P.
Wonderful place. Wonderful food. Wonderful counter staff. Wonderful waitress. Wonder coffee.
The whole atmosphere was great and I would recommend it to everyone - as long as you don't all turn up at the same time that I go there next.
L.
Super friendly nice breakfast 😋
A.
We had a nice lunch, thanks
A.
Great cafe with a cool rustic look, relaxed ambience and good service. Plenty of delicious food options even for someone like me who is gluten free (and partially dairy free). The food was delicious and the coffee was spot on. Couldn’t recommend this place more if you’re close by or cruising through Paeroa.
P.
Back street, harder to find- but when you do you know you’ve made a real discovery! Awesome food, coffee and ambience. Beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces to relax and enjoy the best food in Paeroa hands down.
S.
Stopped here for lunch due to google reviews and was not disappointed. Everything was amazing sandwiches, chai cheesecake and muffins. Prices are a little higher than other places, but that’s because the food is packed full of quality ingredients and delicious flavours. Highly recommended!
P.
Hidden gem. First time patron and very happy with my meal and coffee in the garden setting. Lots of customers both local and out of towners.
J.
Attentive staff and great breakfast in a great setting. The music brings back memories!!
T.
Fantastic find! Great Coffee!!! Great location, off the main street. Rustic interior, warm friendly helpful staff. We stayed for lunch and I had a beautiful salad which included yummy figs and coated almonds. Congrats to the barista, we'll definitely be back.
R.
What a neat kiwi treasure. Great coffee and good, lovely ambience, super service. Worth going out of your way to visit.
S.
Very good café with retro soul.
Great modern food options (ie quality food, vegan, GF, low carb options etc), warm and efficient staff and service.
J.
We went on a friends recommendation and are so glad we did. We very much enjoyed our coffees and scone. We will definitely stop in next time we are in Paeroa.
G.
Looked great but was super busy with a long wait on meals...wouldnt normally do this but tried the Red Tractor Cafe and wow!!! Newly opened and fantastic - really great choice of savory & salads...but will try the refinery on way home I promise.
R.
Would give this place 6 stars if I could. Great coffee, amazing sandwich. I had the Cuban. Love the whole vibe too with the records playing etc. Friendly and efficient staff. But man the food! So good!
L.
I think this is Paeroa's best kept secret. Amazing place with great staff, awesome coffee and really good foos
B.
Awesome cafe. Great combination of modern and vintage vibes. Loved it. Will definitely stop here again if passing through Paeroa
K.
Possibly the Best Coffeehouse I've been to including Auckland Coffeehouses.
Very trendy environment - there's even an open selection of records that can be used with the record player! Even the outside is very well-done with ivy covering the entrance wall.
The coffee & food tastes very good & the employees are very friendly!
This is a great place to stop for a coffee if passing through the small town of Paeroa.
No complaints here, just awesome coffee with a fantastic atmosphere.
M.
Drove through and stopped in Paeroa, saw a little sign and followed it to find The Refinery. Really glad I did. It was a wonderful place with great food and awesome coffee. The atmosphere was comfy, the staff friendly and we left much more full than we arrived.
E.
Found this Gem late last year and was back again this week. Such an exciting, modern menu with so much to choose from. Terrifce counter food and good service too!
C.
Good selection displayed some uncovered. Acoustics not the greatest & they tend to play their music to loud which is a bit off putting. Be nice to be able to have a conversation with quieter music not making it hard to hear others speaking at table.
P.
Had a tasteful lunch today with my sister. The Refinery is always our go to when she comes to Paeroa as a great place for a yummy lunch. Today it was a yummy chunky ham sandwich. The sweet cakes and cookies are devine, especially to take home for later. Thank you, lunch was perfect as usual.
M.
Good food and coffee in a nice relaxed setting. The garden area is lovely but was overrun by aggressive flies unfortunately which made eating outside a bit of a trial.
We'll definitely be adding it to the list of lunch stops when traveling through Paeroa however.
S.
Very retro and cool, plenty of options available for different dietary requirements and friendly happy staff. Delicious meals especially for the health conscious. Ginger slice is best I've ever tasted!
F.
Interesting menu lots of options. My vege wrap and (his) mushrooms were delicious. Super coffee and really nice staff!
A.
Great coffee and food and super friendly staff. Although we arrived late we did not feel rushed to finish our coffee. We cycled and ran out of water but it was not a problem at all to refill our water bottles.
G.
Since discovering this place it's the most exciting part of visiting Paeroa, the L&P bottle and antique shops have been pushed down the list in place of The Refinery. Always a good coffee, in a rustic setting with cool old stuff to look at and a selection of coffee related goodies to check out and buy too. Plenty of seating both indoors and outside.
S.
Where to start....
Virtually hidden, one street back from the main road. You’ll know if you’re close, because of all the cars.
This place has kitsch cool running thru its veins. Its a very large building, with a great outdoor area, cool staff and great food choices.
And in Paeroa.
Who knew?
Probz about half of Auckland, who it seems drive down for a coffee.....
C.
Great food and coffee--even if a bit on the expensive side--an outside garden area WHICH could be made fabulous but unfortunately it was a bit of a tio-will go again and take my gardening tools with ne.couk
M.
Great cafe. Excellent music played from classic vinyl, decent coffee and delicious food. Retro inside with lovely garden seats outside. All good!
C.
Very nice cafe. Enjoyed the
salads and coffee, but disappointed to find the food above the cabinet was not covered and at head height level.
K.
Cool music and great Cafe.
F.
THE hidden gem. Worth hunting out and making this the pit stop of choice between AKL and TGA - have been doing so for years.
Beautiful coffee and an amazing choice of top quality food - the grilled sammies are a must. Easily one of my favourite cafes in NZ.
W.
Nice food. Scrambled eggs was done really well. However, this took them an hour. Cafe is struggling with weekend customer
B.
Fun, retro rustic atmosphere, lovely service and yummy luncheon fare. We had a Reuben and a roast beef sandwich with caramelized onions and gouda cheese that hit the spot with a top notch cuppa tea. Recommend.
M.
Great vibes, awesome food, covid conscious. Will come again! Thanks to the crew there, very friendly staff 😊
S.
Great coffee and food is always fresh and delicious. This place is our regular whenever we are passing through.
P.
After a walk around the Karangahake Gorge, we stopped at the Refinery in Paeroa for a coffee and a bite. Unfortunately our food order was lost at the counter, but once realised they offered us free coffees on the spot. We already had some, but before we left the staff gave us free coffee cards to use the next time we came through.
Our food still took a bit longer than we would have liked, but we were having a good day out, so no need for stress.
The staff seemed a bit disorganised amidst the turmoil of lunchtime visitors, but taking the time to make a nice offer for our next visit went a long way towards drawing us back again.
B.
Great food. Great coffee. Atmosphere is very relaxed. Listen to the music, or even pick your choice from the large vinyl collection.
D.
Great vibe, food, coffee and service.
R.
Nice coffee, although pretty cold when it arrived at the table. Food was lovely as were the waiting staff. Loved the atmosphere and surrounding.
R.
Had a lovely afternoon out at the Refinery. Excellent mocha and apple cake with cream. Just what was required for a long catch up with my sister. Will most definitely be back as my place to go locally for coffee.
m.
Awesome food and coffee. Our favourite place to take friends out to for breakfast or lunch. Great to have such a quality cafe in Paeroa. Just wish they did dinner too!
G.
Such a surprise in Paeroa! Retro-industrial vibe with great cakes and sandwiches. Definitely worth a stop if you’re on your way to the coromandel.
H.
Tried a new brunch item and it was delicious. Good coffee to be had here not burnt.
J.
Small but perfectly formed menu of light & tasty meals. Lovely garden area. Best long black coffee in town. Also like their community activities & promotions. Recommended.
C.
Must do! Awesome indoor and outdoor area, food and coffee were really good and the price was very reasonable for a café and the quality of food. The choc raspberry cake was amazing!
J.
On route from the Coromandel to Taupo, this was the best 2 minute detour ever. Excellent food and a restful garden. The vibe is 70s and you can even play your own choice of record from a large selection available. The food looked and tasted so good we picked up a savoury tart each to eat at lake Taupo.
Y.
It was awesome, we were on holiday from Brisbane, was choice so nice to come home and have the best ginger crunch slice. Thanks for making this kiwi girl happy. 🤙👍
A.
Great place to eat, fun decor and vibe. Food was well presented and delicious.
s.
Always delicious food and coffee
w.
like it's vintage style, and the lady who serves us is really nice and sweet, food and coffee is really nice, will go again next time we pass paeroa
I.
Favourite place to stop for lunch, food is always different, tasty and well presented.
H.
Consistently one of the best coffee shops in the Waikato (and Auckland). Coffee is always hot and strong, the food belies a dedicated and adventurous cook. There is always a variety of interesting freshly baked or prepared options. The Refinery is now a regular stop on our frequent travels through Paeroa. A relaxing and laid back feel in an interesting building.
R.
Wow I'm impressed, it was retro as. Just what most would have loved being in seeing and wanted. Food was very much liked, as for the coffee it was bought by my friends, again. It was full of memories and seemed very popular. Be there or be square.
M.
Cool vibe. Good coffee. Saturday morning, DJ on the decks. You can buy records and retro hifi, Crown Lynn pottery and cool looking steampunk sculpture. Love the giant Bruce Lee movie poster on the wall. The food looks good, next time I come I'll hungry.
J.
Truely the best cafe food in the district.still raving about the spiceed apple cake. Please dont change a thing.
c.
Big open retro space. Bit of a trip down memory lane. Good food and service. Open Sunday.
c.
A retro-chic cafe and lodgings with good cake and coffee.
J.
Great cafe and reasonably priced. Open weekends but closed Monday Tuesday. Popular with riders who bike through the Karangahake Gorge from Waihi, have lunch here then bike back.
R.
Probably the best place for coffee and cafe food in Paeroa. Always busy but always great coffee and good food. They host live bands, buy your ticket in advance. Plenty of parking on the street.
R.
lovely little retro styled cafe away from the main drag. Coffee and food are consistently good. Always stop here between Tauranga and Auckland.
S.
Great place, good food and young lad was late for work whilst he helped us jump start one of our vehicles, very helpful.
A.
The good here is to die for
The only place I go to eat when going thru Paeroa. Out of 10? 11!!!!!.I had a passionfruit cream donut, crisy fresh and sugary on the outside. A frittata egg pumpkin spinach etc. Like I said to die for
C.
Great food and coffee with a very cool retro vibe
a.
Excellent range of different food options and efficient service.
K.
The food is great at this hard to find venue done up in a retro style. There arent too many gluten free vegetarian options but it is worth a visit

Music got turned off mid way through breakfast which was a bit awkward, paid extra for bacon and got one small piece. However the coffee was lovely

J.

We'll be back. :)

V.
Great place. I was part of a large group and they coped amazingly well. Quick service.
K.
Great food and service. Cool setting, didn't find getting in and out from the front oo flash for someone with restricted mobilty using a walker, possibly a better entrance were weren't aware of.
T.
Lovely food and coffee
C.
Rather diappointed after being recommend ti have lunch there. Quiche was nice but green salad awful. A bowl of rocket leaves with no dressing is not a salad.
D.
Great and amazing coffee, lovely food and beautiful service in funky, fun surrounds...little bit hard to find the entrance though as it appeared a bit derelict but such a treasure awaits inside!
F.
Amazing coffee. Beautiful food and great service. Thank you ladies for working so hard to put this together.
P.
It's refreshing to find a cafe like this on a journey...great choice of fresh health food and great coffee ... but that's not all ...it has real character, history, stories, and that's not all nice garden ... old vinyl records and stuff...and more accomodation
Wort discovery off main road
G.
Good food, retro fittings and excellently staffed with very good coffee. A short ride from waihi on the rail trail. Take the time to visit you will be rewarded.

Awesome place for coffee and food. Great ambience. Music is a feature. Comfortable and plenty of space. Sandwiches are delicious.
J.
Average for the cost. Heard that their Ruben sandwich was great. Wasn't. Staff looked bored & tired.
J.
So cool with the old Kiwi furniture from when we were kids in 70s and 80s, lots of fun remembering while eating and drinking the delicious food and drinks on offer!
B.
Beautiful as always. Coffee the best favourite cafe
