Reviews of Old School Cafe, Bar and Restaurant
G.
We came for dinner after a day trip on the spit. This place had been recommended to us. We were not disappointed. Easy to find. Great parking. Once inside the roaring fire made you feel welcome. Amazing range of drinks. The food is simply amazing. The size of the mains are colossal and you need an empty stomach. A must visit. Highly recommend the Blue Cod.
E.
Unassuming from the road but a great place with the best fish and chips I've had in NZ!
A.
After a beautiful track to Wharariki beach, if you are tired and feel hungry, don't wait until you get to Nelson to have some food. Just hop in here. Trust me, the food here is going to blow your mind, probably the price too. But it definitely is worth it! It's a beautiful establishment. The steak is 😍😍, the pizza is mindblowing, and garlic bread😭😭😭😭, it was magical. I'm glad I stopped here for dinner.
N.
Awesome . Super friendly. Great atmosphere. A hidden gem.
Fabulous for campers pop
Highly recommend. Pool room and school yard theme takes me back years🤣🤣I even recognise that strap😫😫😫
A.
Great place for lunch,or evening meal, good menu to choose from, it has a bar, Jamie and Wendy the hosts were very helpful, and the sticky date pudding, made on the premises was just so yummy. Plenty of seating, indoors or out well worth a visit.
L.
Wow, what a fantastic place to stay overnight, the staff are very friendly, the food is great, and for NZMCA Members, you may phone in and stay overnight. They also have a hot shower and toilets available. For a donation of $20 plus eating in the restaurant sitting in Mary's Corner on a couch, with our drinks, we were very happy. Continue from here just 10km drive up the road to Farewell Spit. Thank you for sharing this special place ❤
A.
Good food, good service, nice ambiance and reasonable prices. Can't wait to go back.
K.
Great set up in an amazing setting. Only real letdown is that the staff don't follow Covid food handling and prep rules.
Face masks and slot of hand sanitizer required.
But great food and friendly service.
S.
Very good fish and chips, the chips are some of the best I have had.
B.
A great stop over park for Self Contained members. 2 power points available. Very well maintained grounds.
C.
Best restaurant I've ever been to. Highly recommend. Awesome staff. Best battered prawns.
S.
Great service
We had the battered fish and chips - fish was delicious, chips were cooked perfectly and salad was just right. Will likely be back tomorrow!
T.
Excellent service, great food, even reserved a table for us so we could watch the super 15 rugby last night.
D.
The food was good. It seems popular. I'd have preferred better compliance with Covid safety guidelines.
T.
Very cool place you can see the school heretige of the building. The food wasn't flashy but it was very good.
M.
We love this cafe/bar/restaurant and have camped in their grounds twice now. I always find the ambience and service of a cafe is improved when the owner works in it as they do here. The origins of the building as a School are clear, but the service and the ambience are entirely appropriate for a beachy settlement far away from city life. It's laid-back and relaxed, but with great personalised service, and a range of different kinds of tables inside and out to suit your style. The menu is excellent for a cafe with a challenging supply chain, with plenty of food on your plate at a reasonable price. A place we plan to return to.
D.
Great cheese scones, warm fire and friendly staff. Will deinately stop here again.
H.
Really cool set up and good food
T.
Don’t expect too much of the menu, it is very British inspired with a lot of fried dishes. Very good feel to the place and a lot of people on a regular night. Perfect for campers with the POP outside on the grass, you can have a couple of beers and don’t need to drive anywhere after dinner. Just leave a contribution in the box for the stay. You can use the shower for a fee. Great stop if you’re up this way!
P.
We loved this place. The meal, service and food was amazing and we would not hesitate to return. Next time we may park up our caravan on their site and will only need to walk there. Thank you to the staff for an enjoyable and unforgettable evening.
S.
Always good to call in and catch up and have a meal

This was our “treat night” after a week of campervan food. It was definitely a treat! Two massive plates of blue cod and chips, a good Margaretha pizza and a great feed of pork belly. Everything was beautifully cooked, the service was great, warm atmosphere and cosy. Would highly recommend.
l.
A well maintained building and very pretty gardens. Stayed for 3 nights in our motorhome. Spotless facilities. We had dinners and lunches. Superb food.

I feel I've landed on a hidden gem tonight while going back to Nelson from Wharariki beach. Hungry and tired, and expecting nothing on our way back we found this restaurant and man were we delighted by the food and staff!

Good food and a really nice local ambience. Service was quick and friendly. What a pity this restaurant didn't showcase fresh local produce more. Present menu could be more interesting - much of it is from frozen but the cook is really good.

A most welcome cafe beyond Collingwood & before Farewell Spit. Enjoyed a morning coffee. Understandably, opened limited hours, but is open late over the weekend. Also has a liquor licence.

What a great little restaurant! We stopped in the little town of Pakawau while exploring the top of the South Island. We stopped in for dinner. The food was great, the portions sizable and the service friendly. Can't ask for much more. There's some art for sale too if you're interested. The school them comes through in the set up of the cafe but it's not overdone. It just makes it a bit interesting. Will stop by again when we're up here. Great place.
K.

G.
If you want a relaxed, evening ( or afternoon) with great food, this is where you go. You'll love it. .. the couple running the place (and their cat) welcome everyone with genuine warmth.
J.
It's great to have such a relaxed, friendly place this far west. The food is good, better than pub grub but relaxed and unpretentious. They purposefully cater for locals year round, providing a place to eat and drink and welcome travellers when they turn up. The menu is a mix of dishes covering differnt meats. I had a vegetarian pizza, which was delicious. I don't remember anything specifically for vegans on the menu, but I'm sure they would be the kind of place that would "whip something up" They also make a great coffee worth going back for. We will definately continue to visit.
S.

I live in Takaka, visit the Old School House Cafe regularly and love the place. The owners & staff are very friendly and interactive with both locals and visitors. They are also happy to accommodate requests regarding changes to meals = no bread with steak sandwich (Which I might add is always beautifully cooked and still my favourite thing on the menu) with just a few chips instead of their usual very generous portion.
R.
Absolutely beautiful meal
P.
This cafe in an old schoolmhousevhss indoor dining sndxa lovelybsheltered sunny courtyard. It was an oasis og calm on a wildly windy day. The food was very nice. Mussels have a curry and coriander mayo on the side which goes perfectly with steam mussels. Also it had grilled ciabatta with it. Staff are excellent
