Had an enjoyable lunch today. We both had chowder. While not the best chowder ever, still enjoyable. Service was great. The menu looked interesting and will probably be back to try something different. The meals being served to other tables looked pretty darn good.

If your wanting very decent sized dinner meals this is the place! We had really friendly staff and table settings next to the beach were nice. Our meals were really generous and the only thing stopping me giving a 5/5 was coriander in my nachoes saying that I should've asked what was in it so that's my fault not theirs.

This is one of my favorite places in Russell, so nice to get brunch here and sit on the beachfront. The staff are excellent and friendly. The crispy corn fritters are the best in New Zealand!

What a find. This is an excellent choice if visiting Russell. Such great staff even with all the Covid restrictions in place. Stopped for a coffee early on and returned for an excellent smoked mussel chowder for lunch, So nice. And the view was great. Had a water pistol to restrain the gulls but wasn’t needed.

Dam dam dam……… what. An you say. The squid was next level. So good to have a chef that knows what he’s doing and not having rubbery squid. The chowder is next level as well as the Corn fritters. Staff bloody fantastic. Thank you and very satisfied

Had the Nasi Goreng and Springrolls. Springrolls were fantastic. Could do with a bit more chicken, but very worth it. Nasi Goreng was very good. Good serving, spiced well with extra chilli for the more adventurous eaters. Would definitely recommend these two dishes. The restaurant itself was well set out and tidy. Cosy outdoor settings. The waitress was friendly, professional and had a welcoming tone.

Delicious breakfast and an incredible view. Friendly staff. The service is slow- so don't go if you are in a rush. But if you want to sit and relax in the sun this is the place for you.

Dropped in for first coffee of the day and a date scone. Both were excellent. If you want double shot make sure you request it. The staff are friendly it has outdoor and indoor seating. Still a bit chilly for me to be sitting outside. But has set us up well for the long trip home. Cost $$

This cosy cafe is a seafood lovers dream! I highly recommend the seafood platter for 2, oysters and seafood chowder. Our gorgeous waitress Sophie put together dishes on the secret menu - broccolini with garlic butter and dukkah, hash brown rostis 😋😋😋 Beautiful seaviews, fast, friendly service, relaxing decor and delicious food and drinks 🥂🍷 at an affordable price! Ordered gnocchi and vegetables. Fantastic! The bread and hummus plate was probably my favorite - perfectly cooked with a touch of crispness and properly soft. Had a bite of the rhubarb muffin and it was also great. Everything was just scrumptious, alright?! Great service too. They knew we were in a hurry and nicely accommodated accordingly. A must-visit for me if I am ever in this area again.

Located right by the water on The Strand, we chanced upon Butterfish and gave it a go. Good stab at nailing the Huevos Rancheros - my only improvement would’ve been more salsa and beans. Otherwise flavours were well balanced, plus I was delighted to see it came with halloumi. On the other hand coffee was ok, slightly overpriced but nothing to rave about.

I remember the day. 9th of March and Russell was the last stop of our journey through New Zealand, though sad that we had to leave, we were glad the last meal was at the Butterfish Restaurant. THE BEST CHILLI JAM SQUID IN NEW ZEALAND! To the crew at Butterfish Restaurant & Cafe, commendations all-round! Your service Staff were the brightest and friendliest and a true Master Chef behind the scenes creating absolutely brilliant works of culinary deliciousness! I would plead for the amazing recipe. But in all truth, the love and culture that cascades from this food are the main ingredients that make New Zealand a tremendous place to be, and I WILL be back! Arohanui from Australia.

Five stars for breakfast with interesting choices from the usual cafe options - The ham hock and hash was hearty, eggs huevo was delicious. Bred was high quality, overall good ingredients put together well. Suits a lazy morning breakfast if you aren't rushing anywhere. Also a great selection of cabinet food for breakfast or lunch on the run.

Wish I could give this place more stars. But, the idiotic people that frequent this place are just downright rude. Must be from America! We have been here at least two dozen times since moving to Russell. The food has always been consistent and well prepared. The quality is on par with many other four and five star restaurants in the area. The seafood is absolutely the freshest in Russell. Fish and chips while not exactly the most healthy food to eat here is well prepared. Will keep going here and hopefully the rude expats won't be around much longer.

Visited Butterfish twice in one day. Coffee and cake in the morning, which was lovely but dinner was absolutely delicious! I overheard someone at the Duke of Marlborough commenting about how the chowder was so much better at the Butterfish, so I knew we had to come here and eat. I had the Scotch fillet which was absolutely outstanding and was so delicious! Would definitely come here again.

Would rate it at 4.5 stars if possible. Great selection of cabinet food. Prices are resonable considering it is a tourist hot spot. The two breakfasts that we received, both were very nice. Best scrambled eggs in a long time. Only reason they fall short on a 5 rating is they failed to have original choices on the menu. Dissapointing that it was middle of the week and peak season. Otherwise higly recommend. Would happily visit again.

Oh bigger... this is the cafe that I visited in Russell not the other one, with a very pleasant outdoor seating area, located by the marina with people busying themselves throughout the day shopping and enjoying the scenery. Here is well prepared and cooked food, and I recommend the Macs Gold out of the taps!
