Reviews of The Cheese Barn at Matatoki
J.
We had a wonderful time here with our two dogs. We have been here before and loved it even more this time. This café has a serene and beautiful atmosphere with Alpacas, goats, bunnies, Guinea pigs, etc. wandering about in an enclosed field near the outdoor tables. The cheese board was absolutely YUM! Loved the blue cheese and I must make a special mention of the coffee they serve. It was out of this world delicious! We can’t wait to go back there as soon as we can. :-)
B.
Called in for a light lunch and a drink. We ended up buying some organic cumin seed gouda and some Granadano Parmesan, aged vegetarian Italian cheese as well as a gluten free strawberry tart and cheese scone. We got to pet the friendly goat and the free range chickens - super cute place, lovely atmosphere and food. Loved it.
S.
Enjoyed it very much.. i
Inside or outside relaxed setting good food selection and superb coffee..farm animals and play area close by for children. Snacks available to get up close to the animals a great idea especially for the children
S.
Beautiful under the trees, with homemade cheese 🧀 and home made ice cream 🍦!! Loved meeting the animals. Great staff! Amazing food. Great atmosphere!
K.
Nice food was lovely to sit under the umbrella & watch the world go by. Platter was very nice. Limited menu. Nice with the animals there for the children. 👍🥰
J.
I just felt that $15 a night is little bit too much with no facilities. Only pay $10 at most other pops sometimes free unless you use power and water $10.but bought some cheese looks good haven't tried it yet.A good idea would be maybe if someone purchases cheese take the $5 off the price.
I.
Great customer service to all people. Excellent food n coffee. Fabulous environment with animals. Dog friendly. Ticks all the boxes
T.
What's not to love??
Idyllic countryside setting, fabulous coffee from a top barista (this guy is actually legendary in his coffee making skills) and really yummy food. Definitely worth a stop and would highly recommend. Absolutely fantastic!! Will be back!!
K.

R.
Great place to take the grandchildren. They loved the animals and the alpacas were beautiful even if they spat at us. Fabulous pizza and great coffee. Open over new year!
N.
Great place for stopover and relax before continuing your journey. We were on our way back to Auckland from blueberry picking nearby. A bit pricey but worth it. Great selection for cheese lover especially the award wining organic Qumin seed Gouda while the kids can enjoy the small playground under the tree outside.
S.
Friendly to humans and animals. Great service. Added benefit of Belgian waffles stall there as well.
R.
Alot of nice place the Cheese factory and very nice service in the cafe a must for all Cheese lovers
G.
The Matatoki Cheese Barn is a great place to drop by to relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Their cheese platter has a good variety to sample. The Organic Garlic & Chive Gouda is a must try; full of flavour! 😄The Kallarney Blue suits the adventurous among us 🤩 Family friendly with big outside lawn (playground and farm animals great entertainment for kids). Thank you for accommodating a big group today.
F.
Thank you Kelvin and Cathy and staff. Great coffee, great food, friendly service always. Operating under orange traffic light as contactless and takeaway, you are catering to all and supporting YOUR supporters. Great coffee, great food, ice cream/gelato stand, animal farm, gift shop and incredible cheeses. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere always. 100%!!
D.
Great little spot for lunch and coffee. Their meat pies had a nice flakey crust and tasty filling, and I believe most of their food is made from scratch. They serve all the usual NZ coffee options, and they have a great view of the surrounding farm. It's a really nice, cozy place. They also have a good wine selection. It's located on the farm, so you get the chance to see some of their animals. The picnic tables are right along some of the sheep, and they have a few cages scattered around the front with guinea pigs. There are also some bird cages near the back. Overall, it's a very scenic and homey place. Definitely recommend!
a.
I've never been there before but it has really good Coffee and it was a very amazing pitstop for when I rode the Hauraki Bike Rail Trail from Waitakaruru to Waihi.
J.
Awesome little cafe with excellent food and great, friendly service. Well worth a visit on your way through.
C.
Friendly staff, lovely pizza's, enjoyed sitting outside watching the animals. Great for an outing with kids and right on the rail trail.
T.

K.
Awesome owner, great coffee. Had Mata toastie. Recommended.
Great place to stop on the Rail Trail
A.
Was really looking forward to lunch and hosting visitors to Matatoki. The place was quite busy but sadly the food quality let the cafe down. Sorry will not be back
G.
What great way to get into ebiking. Leave Thames, pedal for a while and find this gem lunch stop just down the trail. Enjoy the food have a wine and pedal back to town.
S.
Great coffee and food . Staff were very friendly and helpful. My daughter loved feeding the animals . Highly recommended
Z.
I love their products! Beautiful creamy cottage cheese, delicious yoghurt and a stunning blue cheese that makes your mouth hum... and all organic. Thank you guys for dairy products that give me joy every day!
T.

I love the organic buttermilk here! Baked goods are yummy, too.
W.
Stopover during the drive from Whitianga to Rotorua. Nice cakes and pastries available. Animals feeding may be interesting for children.
N.
What delicious dates scones, followed by a great coffee, top of with superb service.
L.
A nice place for family to relax when you are cycling. And the animals are cute.
R.
Great lamb and mint pie and coffee.
Lovely rustic outdoor area.
J.
Great spot. We had to sit outside due to its popularity but it was a nice enough day so not all bad. Great if your youngster wants to feed the friendly farm animals on site. Good food, good coffee, good service...more inside seating or a sheltered outdoor area would be a good development.
c.
Food was good place was clean and looks like a good place to take kids.
M.
We ordered cofees. The coffee taste was excellent - price was reasonable/fair. Friendly and good service. However, the four coffees were delivered in three stages. First came the ice coffee, then 10 minutes later the ice chocolate, and then after 10 minutes the hot coffees. I would prefer to receive the order in one go. Theres plenty of parking and also a small green area to spread some sheets and sit under a tree. kids loved playing on the swings, looking at the rabbits, chickens, goats and lamas. Overall great experience.
P.
Lovely place to stop by with farm animals and a very friendly cat. Nice atmosphere and the coffee and cake we had was so good too.
R.
Great place to have lunch and have great cheese.
H.
Nice atmosphere friendly people good food 👌
V.
Great stop on our way back to Auckland. Fun animals and tasty cheese and coffee.
J.
What a great place to stop. A lady in Paeroa mentioned The Cheese Barnes so we stopped here on our way back to Auckland. We chose the cheese board and a smoothy and we rate the cheese 10 out of 10. Would recommend stopping here.😊
C.
I love this place. Busy on Sundays too. Can see why. Wonderful till sales person. Had great venison salami, and the best buttered scon
C.
Friendly staff, delicious cheese, generous portions, beautiful location.
S.
Ever since i was a little my family have always stopped here to buy cheese on the way to Hahei or when visiting relatives in the Waikato. The cheese (especially the cumin gouda) brings back so many wonderful memories of my childhood and summer road trips. Whenever we bought cheese it would be gone within minutes. The owners are lovely, we visted last weekend for coffee(which was AMAZING), scones and of course some brie and cumin cheese!!! You have to stop here on the way to Paeroa or thames. The cheese barn is such a treat 💜 btw BEST BRIE EVER
W.
Worth the drive for the coffee alone. Best barista in the area. Lovely carrot cake too
M.
Fantastic experience fab cheese platter to share, feed the animals, sit in the sun or indoors & relax enjoy plus amazing food & service. A day to remember.
C.
Good quality food, reasonably priced. Dead slow service even at 11am. We saw several different people with t-shirts on but they seemed overwhemed way before the tables were full. We literally waited 25 mins to get a pre-made slice toasted.
B.
Lovely place on lovely day. Platter was good..enough for a good sized serving..sort of deconstructed sandwich. Good coffee. Cheese well worth buying. A great stopping off place...great for getting up close w goats. Alpacas.rabbits guinea pigs. Lovely and rustic
H.

A.
Had a wonderful experience here with my toddler. Lots of farm animals to see and feed while having delicious food looking out onto a wonderful setting. Staff were also very friendly. Would definitely go back
H.
8 of us met for pre Christmas lunch. I had a yummy lamb and mint pie. Others had pizza. Ploughmans lunch, mince and cheese pie. Quiche and Salad etc. Some delicious desserts came out too including some gluten free. We have purchased cheese here twice now and that is great too. Really enjoyed our meals and the park like setting with animals over the fence.
L.
Worth a stop. Great cheese & food. Nice spot for a bit of lunch & take the kids to see the animals.
D.
We were a bit disappointed at what seemed to be quite a small range of cheese. It was ok, but if you have to make a long trip you might be disappointed too. On the day we went, the staff seemed a bit too busy to be able to ask any questions. The coffee was fine and the surrounding countryside excellent
S.
Great place for taking young children. Can feed the animals and relax while they play outside 😀
A.
Great food! Yummy sorbet and awesome animals. Very friendly service will definitely be back !
G.
What an Awesome place to go. Their cheese is to die for as is their coffee. Very friendly and you feel at home. we were heading off fishing so I had my boat in tow, and it was nice to see such a big parking area for Hassel free parking. If you don't go there for a visit, you are missing out on one of life's pleasures.
C.
Made a special trip north to have lunch at the Cheese Barn. Our first 'tourist' outing, to the antique shops south of here, following the end of lockdown. Shared a cheese platter, and a cake and latte bowl each. The cheese always fresh and creamy. Especially enjoyed the garlic and chive gouda this time.
J.
Beautiful 🙂day great pizza and coffee
P.
Absolutely fantastic we loved every thing about the Matatoki Cheese Barn. We are going to celebrate my husband's 75th birthday there to, next year.
y.
Lovely setting, .Thanks to staff for helping us when we had an issue on our Rail Trail Ride.
S.
Great place to stop when on the Hauraki trail rides. Good coffee and nice half pizza will give you the boost you need to make it back to Paeroa. Friendly staff helped me choose some cheese from their selection which is made on site, all of which was promptly devoured once I got home with a bottle of wine and my flatmate.
Great experience all round ☺
D.
Great coffee, food, and service
B.
Good coffee, light menu, very nice pies. Relaxing rural location with plenty of room.
H.
A pleasant surprise. More than nice cheese. There were also goats, alpacas, rabbits, and guinea pigs for the kids to pat and feed. Don't drive too fast or you'll miss the turn off.
L.
Yes always worth a visit
H.

Always consistently good moccachinos and the date scones are deliciously home made style. The owners produce award winning cheeses which are for sale. Tables inside or Alfresco under the plane (or oak?)trees. Children can buy 50c bags of food pellets to feed the guinea pigs, rabbits, alpaccas and goats.
It's also on the Hauraki Rail Trail and has bike racks.
L.
