S.I love the style and atmosphere of this coffee shop. The owner is such a wonderful woman and the coffee is amazing. And such a unique spin on the shakes! I would highly recommend this place for a quick stop to get your fix in the morning 🥳🥰
S.Earthquake has Char making the move
The arrival of the city's newest coffee house can be put down to the November earthquake.
Grind Coffee Lounge owner-operator Char McNaughton has come to Upper Hutt after losing her job as the manager of The Boulevard Kitchen, a ground floor public cafe in Statistics House on the capital's waterfront.
A Pinehaven resident, she had been harbouring the ambition of setting up her first solo business in her adopted home.
But that became option number one after the Statistics building was damaged and closed following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on November 14.
"I'd always planned to go out on my own but the earthquake focussed my head a little bit for sure."
She has been in business partnerships before, including in her hometown Nelson, but is excited to be striking out with a cafe on her own.
McNaughton describes Grind, in Princes St, as "a coffee cart without wheels". It is small and inviting and fitted with a "street" look.
"I wanted a different look, something alternative I guess."
She has been encouraged by the response of locals in her opening two weeks..
"It's going well. People are coming in through the door, even if it's only to have a look. I've already got some regulars and I'm seeing a wide range of people, young and old.
"I love talking to people and I want everyone feeling comfortable being here. Upper Hutt is definitely where I want to be," she said.
"It is a beautiful place and really it's so under-rated. It's good to get back to a city cafe too. It's nice to meet all types of people."
Grind will be a one-person operation, opening seven days a week from 6am.
"I'm a workaholic," McNaughton said. "You sort of have to be if you're in the hospitality industry but I'm hoping after a first six months that I'll be able to employ someone.
J.Honestly in love with this gem of a coffee shop. I was dragged halfway across Wellington by a friend with the promise of good milkshakes. 🥛 He wasn't wrong. When I arrived not only was the theme of the month Alice in Wonderland⏱🐇 (which is my favorite) but they were beautiful and insanely delicious.
The staff were delightfully friendly and the service was on point. The atmosphere of the place was filled with hard rock attitude which was epic. From the TOOL couch cushions to the ravens on the wall, everything was just a MOOD. 🦇🕷Can't wait to go back and try whatever they have next month. Thanks all!

H.Located in Princes St in Upper Hutt, I had heard great things about their famous milkshakes, they didn't disappoint. A meal in a milkshake indeed. The decor of the cafe is very funky and alternative too. The staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely the place to go if you are in the Hutt Valley and fancy an excellent milkshake.

N.This place is outstanding. We were staying at the local Marae recently and needed some caffeine to wake up in the morning. The legend at the machine was pleasant and efficient making 15 coffees in 15 minutes with a massive smile on her face. Will definitely be back at every opportunity.
S.Love going here! Milkshakes are so delicious and they change special milkshake flavors every few weeks! Coffee is also really nice here, but be warned; one thing that they say is, death before decaf, so no decaf. My dog also loves going here as they give dog treats to your order!
T.Best milkshakes ever! Try anything from their monthly rotating themed menu or create your own from about 20 ingredients. Coffee is A++ as well.
C.If these aren't the milkshakes on the planet then book me a flight to wherever you think they are.
If you find nicer people then the crew that work here then they belong in an asylum because this crew is already too nice.

We came with toddlers who wanted there unicorn shakes and again amazing we came we distroyed the toy area we spilt drinks it was chaos but you girls were amazing , drinks where amazing and service as well. D.This a small coffee bar with a tonne of character. The staff are polite, efficient, and SUPER friendly. The coffee is very good and they do an excellent range of over the top milkshakes. It's a small place, so there often isn't room to sit down. If you do want to get one of their milkshakes then don't leave it to the afternoon as they often sell out of ingredients because they're soooooo good!
R.Small, very 'scene' cafe decorated with lots of black, with very cool art on walls. Serves coffee and milkshakes and I think juices. A couple of slices on the counter but generally their business is drinks.
I felt old and uncool going in but found the lady who served me very helpful.
Delicious milkshake. Great hours too, so many other places seem to close super early over weekends or aren't open at all on Sundays (but yes, I know cafe staff are people too and deserve time off!) Just nice to have plenty of time to go in and get something yummy.
They seem to have quite a following now. Recommend!

J.Fantastic little coffee shop dedicated to the high art of coffee. You won’t find many friendly baristas in Upper Hutt with such a though knowledge of what they’re making.
Flat white game is strong, but I recommend planning on a long black to really appreciate the flavours. A range of milks are available, likewise a couple of slices should your sweet tooth not be satisfied with a mocha!
P.The milkshakes at Grind are so delicious and worth every penny! The staff are so friendly too. I would say it's family friendly but not really suitable for toddlers (well, my toddler, at least!)
N.My wife and myself are very picky when it comes to coffee and have been mostly disappointed with most cafes around upper Hurt.
Grind is the Diamond in the rough, On point coffee (can confirm 3x) and the staff are some of the friendliest people we have meet in NZ by far.
The shop has it's own identity and so do the amazing people who work there! can't recommend this place enough !

*waves arm* Well friendo it's time to go to scenic Upper Hutt and sit on a couch with some Iron Maiden throw pillows and drink some tasty shakes. If you think of Grind more as an old style milk bar then a cafe you'll be right.

P.I love this little cafe. It's a hidden gem for Upper Hutt. The staff were wonderful and one waitress in particular was a dream but I can't give you her name as I don't remember. Anyway, she was one of the best I have seen. This is a must go to place if you are visiting Upper Hutt.

T.Great place to get your morning, lunchtime or even afternoon coffee. Prices are on par with other coffee shops however the coffee is pretty damn good. Staff are always friendly and entertaining (before you get your caffine fix). They also have their famous mother suckin shakes and a flavor list the length of your arm, and they taste amazing.They also have rock, punk, metal and other similar type of music plaing in the cafe which is welcome difference. If you are looking for yoit cafine fix and find yourself in Upper Hutt then you cant go past Grind Coffe lounge.
