Very nice. Lovely food and wheat beer. The wheat beer was perfect. Not "flat" as reviewed by others, a lovely head holding the flavor in. Lamb rump was also excellent with a delicious char flavor with nicely matched vege, particularly the grilled beans. I'm waiting for my rhubarb crumble, hopefully it lives up to my anticipation. Nice venue with friendly staff, there is a light build it over the bar, as an electrician this results in one star being docked. A very enjoyable experience. I think I'll come back tomorrow to check it's just as good.

Order the 1kg and mussels and was very disappointed, understand at times mussels might not be fat which is out of their control but what you should never get in a restaurant like this that specialises in mussels is that they have not been steamed correctly and are way over cooked. Also order a lamb shank pie which was beautiful so gave the food a 3 rating otherwise would have been a 1 😭

We hadn't been for dinner at Leuvin for years. Pleased to say the mussels in coconut milk and lemongrass are as good as ever. Friendly, helpful, professional waitstaff

My friends and I have really enjoyed going to Leuven for brekkie and lunch in the last couple of years. Unfortunately this place has gone downhill recently. Last time we went, some of the mussels tasted raw. This morning after having brekkie there, the 3 of us all had running belly right after (it's worth mentioning we ordered different things). Very disappointed.

This place reminds me of being back in Antwerp with my family and friends. It is a tradition and classic interior with a warm welcome home. The staff are very friendly and helpful and willing to help you inform of their, breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. The only bummer is the small selection of Belgium beers. Overall a recommend this place to visit and enjoy the beautiful place. Cheers.

I had eaten here a few times over the years and decided to go again for their signature mussels and beer combination, Belgian of course! The mussels were a bit of a disappointment because not enough of the sauce adhered too them. The sauce was watery like a thin soup in the bottom of the dish. It need concentrating to make it more "sticky" and improve the flavour. The Leffe Blonde beer is great and Leuven is worth going to just for that. Serviced from the Manager was excellent. Disappointing and concerning: The young woman who attended to our table was pleasant and helpful but it worried all of us that she was not wearing a mask while she stood over our table and took our orders. I feel that this obvious flouting of current rules around the Delta outbreak just let's the cafe and it's staff down. Recommended with some concerns around safety.

Service was good. Food was marginally above average. Prices were on the high side. First course was a trio of meat croquettes, the fillings, spicy sausage, beef and chicken. They were quite tasty but an expensive entree at $16.50. The bigger complaint for this first course was the side salad. When did restaurants forget how to make a salad that does not comprise of bagged rocket that like most other restaurants in Wellington probably comes in en masse via bidvest? This dish could have been justifiable with a tastier salad that had a bit more imagination and thought! The second course was a 500gm rib eye with the bone in. This dish cost $41.00 which is the second most expensive steak I have eaten in Wellington. It was accompanied by some pretty lackluster roasted vegetables. I asked for the steak to be cooked medium rare some parts of the steak were medium to well done but closer to the centre the steak was cooked well. I ordered some fries to accompany the steak.. These could have done with a bit more seasoning although they were crisp. I asked for some mushroom sauce to accompany the steak this request was accepted although I can make a far better tasting mushroom sauce at home. The sauce was runny and had an odd orange colour through it and the mushrooms were extremely rubbery. My wife ordered the meatballs which she enjoyed. The stand out of the night was the ox tail casserole. It was the first time I had tried ox tail and I liked it. The portion size was generous and I could imagine that being a perfect winter dish.

stopped by for lunch and had the 1kg of mussels in white wine and a couple of beers, the food was delicious and service was prompt and the staff were friendly, the decor does even remind me of my time in Belgium :)

Missing a lot of stuff at the moment. Disappointed by the whole place, felt rundown compared to before. Atmosphere was gone. Usually good portions from here and chips are excellent. Let's hope post lockdown it returns to former glory

Popped in last Sunday for some Mussels and Frites and a cold one with three friends. Very enjoyable. Two for one special was great too :-)

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit, welcoming environment, great service, delicious food. We chose mussels and the decadent lamb shank pie. Will definitely be returning and soon.

Visited this place for dinner and it was all good. Service was efficient and portions were huge! The 500g steak I ordered had to be returned because it was too rare but when it returned it was done to perfection

We went in hopes of a familiar experience to what I've had in Christchurch and Auckland. Both pots of mussels were rubbery and our waitress wasn't interested in customers. Not even a 'you're welcome' to our 'thank yous'. Hopefully just an off day or time, see you next visit!

Excellent beers on tap, although not all beers on the menu were available on the night. Wholesome food, which was perfect for a cold night in Wellington. The pie was flavourful, tender meat, and a good crust. The staff were friendly and reasonably knowledgeable. Would recommend.

Cool place to eat and breakfast is yum. A little pricier than most but offers something different

A great old and historical bar. Food is great especially the buckets of mussels. Menu items can be paired with recommended Belgian beers or wines from a fantastic drinks menu. Pity there were no Belgian Saison options. Lunch menu is extensive and it includes a venison burger. This came with a poached pear and hand cut chips with homemade mayonnaise or tomatoes sauce. I paired it with the recommended Kriek Cherry beer. This was a wonderful pairing as it worked well with the gamey venison. Staff are very friendly and efficient. Always helpful in their knowledge of the menu and drinks. Sure it's a bit pricey but is worth experiencing the beauty of a little bit of Belgian cafe culture.

The waffles could've been better. But the service was amazing..and the staff are so quick even in bringing the food out. You dont have to wait for long.

Mussels. Really, just come for the mussels and fries. Also, beers. Staff were great and quickly sent out my colleagues order after they sent a wrong one. Breaded Pork was bland. Lamb was overdone.

Leuven always is humming. We always enjoy the hot chips. Last time I had a venison burger with poached pear and cherries, it was oh so tasty. The table service is efficient. Will keep going back!

Came here on a Saturday night - Really nice venue and good beers but I came here at 8:00pm and was rushed out by the bartenders by 9:00. A but odd as it says open late… would recommend for a lunch beer but doesn’t have much of a vibe for the evening. Could do with some live music or something

Now I'm sure this place does other great food but we only go for the mussels, they sell heaps of them, they're always delicious and with the high frequency they're always super fresh. There are some amazing Belgian beers, Hoegaarten recommended for the mussels. When we're in town this is the place. If you needed extra encouragement, Sunday and Monday the mussels are a 2 for 1 deal with $5 for charity

The atmosphere was buzzy and the staff were very friendly The food was outstanding We started with chicken liver pate to share Yummy Recommend We then both had the small meals I had the duck&chicken voluvant with leek and baby potatoes Delicious The other was lamb salad Equally tasty Only regret...couldn't fit in desert! Good Belgian beer selection. Tasty Belgium (and Dutch) food: croquettes, bitterballen and frikandel. Choosing a beer feels like playing roulette, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose (various beers were sold out or taken off the menu a while ago). Great place for a drink in the sun, unless there are smokers around you. Inside is nice as well.

Staff are excellent atmosphere great,but this was the second time I have been there for there mussels, had the mixed mussel platter 1st time terrible mussels were skinny and over cooked so they compensated with putting more cheese on them. This time had the 2 pots for $29 great price poor technique with the flavors mussels still skinny, I no there mussels come from haiymussel company down south and there mussels are skinny this time of the year, Maybe they should try mussels from Coromandel when season for haiymussel mussels have spawned, because from December to March Coromandel mussels are fat and clean(no barnacles) could be the trick for a better outcome.

Cozy traditional looking Belgian cafe with a good choice of quality belgian beers. Bit on the expensive side but understandable if you know where the beers come from.

Absolutely delicious food and excellently portioned, was so full I had to take some home and it was just as good the second time! The service was top notch. Highly recommend!

My husband and I dropped in for some drinks after having dinner elsewhere and I was really impressed. Though we wished they had a couple more beer options on draft vs. the bottle, the tap beer we did get was awesome. Their wine selection impressed me as well. We ultimately decided to cheat our diet even more so than drinks and ordered a dessert. The sticky date pudding with caramel sauce. Oh lord. Literally one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. The service was also phenomenal! Such kind, helpful, and prompt people working here. Must return to try the fries at some point. They looked great!

Yeah it was ok I mean like far out if I could just get some chips with normal tomato sauce that would be all good.. service was great though it matched the decor.. very Belgium.

The Leuven has always been a great pub and place to dine at for good reason - everything is great - staff, decor and ambience, comfort, location, food and of course the beer! Had a great meal with friends last Friday - steamed mussels in a bucket - very filling, tasty plus, reasonably priced and a nice glass of Belgium beer as well - notwithstanding C-19 the place was very quiet - nice to see some families with children in there too having a meal as there are not too many pubs in town where folk feel comfortable in taking their children to.

Great ambience. Love the furnishings which suit the era of the old building. Maybe work on those desserts....ok yeah I realize it's a bar first and eatery second.

Great indoor / outdoor venue. A really solid range of Belgian and Belgian style beers on tap, with glassware matched to each style and/or brewery. Ability to try before you buy with taster glasses and helpful information about the beers and styles. Extensive, affordable menu with something for everyone.

I was pleasantly surprised with Leuven. Went there for Saturday lunch and the place was reasonably quiet. Service was professional and fast. For just under $20 I received an enormous double mussel patty burger with fries - really decent value considering the size and quality of the dish. The burger was delicious and my hot chocolate even came with the chocolate on a stick. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!

Mussels, mussels and more mussels please! They have a variety of flavours. Highly recommend the white wine, celery and onion one 👌🏼Very consistent too which for me is a big plus.

I have dined here twice this week because the meals are so delicious. If you are into European style dishes (French, Belgium, German) cooked perfectly with a lot of flavour then this is the place for you. The mussels cooked in a broth of your choice are packed with happiness for the taste buds. The ambience is great with beautiful wood work in the floors, walls and dining furniture. Service is friendly and professional. Someone had put a lot of thought into the design and concept of this delightful establishment. If I was more of a beer person and if my favourite cuisine wasn't Japanese then this would be my favourite restaurant. Well done owners and staff.

Had the mussels and chips and it was lovely. Always consistent food. Been eating there for 18 years or so on and off. Service excellent atmosphere great as well.

The food here is amazing but definitely beware of the enormous portions of the entrees! We couldn't just eaten an entree each they were so big. Instead, we struggled with our mains which were delicious, but couldn't finish. We will be back now we are more informed about the portion size! Service was good too.

Staff friendly and attentive. The food was great. They have a wide selection of mussel dishes. If you enjoy mussels they offer a mussel tasting plate with samples from the various menu options. They were great. The coffee was good too.

One of the best pubs in the CBD in my opinion. Had an issue with once with really cold food, they fixed it immediately as well as gave us extra food goodies as an apology. Great atmosphere every time I visited over the last 6 years. Great staff. Genuinely one of my favorites. It has the potential to be one of the best if it gets a bit of a facelift I think.

My wife and I are American, and have always prided ourselves in our taste in meats. All of New Zealand has made us realize that that pride is ridiculous, and that this country has much fresher and better food than we do. All that being said, the food here was immaculately prepared, and the service was so friendly. The lamb was incredibly cooked, and the steak was as well. Also, no matter how full you are, get dessert (American mentality...). It's worth it.

I've been here a few times, and is a really good place to entertain clients as the staff are very attentive and professional. This time I had the lamb and it was excellent, especially the sauce. You know you will get quality with the Belgian Beer Cafe chain, and Leuven delivers this in spades. Keep up the great work!

Great beer, great service. The staff were really friendly. Well apart from a tyrannical looking red headed woman who stormed around looking angry. If she is the boss I feel for the staff! Anyway, I digress. Had a lovely evening there. We called in for a quick beer and ended up staying for dinner. It would have been 5 stars but my mussels were a bit skinny. I don't suppose the restaurant can do much about that though.

Fantastic Belgian beer selections, and food selections are great, this well-traveled restaurant bar is a unique place in the middle of town that atmosphere cannot be matched. Everyone ordered something different and everyone enjoyed it immensely! And for those of you who have not sampled the best beer in the world, Belgium beer, this is a great opportunity to do so.

3 words: Real Belgium Beer. Perfect place for all of you out there who can't stand the craft beer scene anymore either and need some good old-fashioned European beer.

Nice atmosphere and the service is top notch. I ordered the lamb and i have to say it was possibly the best lamb i have eaten. I had a house cider which was nice. I highly recommend that if you are in Wellington and want a great experience then this is the place. The only reason i didnt give it a 5 star was it can be pricey depending on what you are wanting. You can go cheap though. The value item for me is the meatballs, absolute value for money

Our family had a extraordinary time for dinner. Staffs were very friendly and kind. The foods were great and the beer was very fresh. Victor served us perfectly. Thanks to all staffs.

Their potato cake breakfast special is a real winner. Quality and cost can't be beaten. We go regularly as a treat have good service and good coffee

A usual fav for their selection of Belgian beers... unfortunately covid has restricted the beers arriving in Nz so was somewhat difficult to order as many were out of stock. Food was Delish

I love the Leuven! The food is spectacular, the range of beer is huge and the venue is very comfortable. Their menus are fun, although we did find that saying the French name for our order didn't work for the person taking our order - we had had to translate so they understood. The place is full of stuff to look at and discuss. It's a great place, in central Wellington, to spend some time eating and drinking. They also have an outdoors area, and that's fun too on a good day!

Have only been to this place for breakfast but surely best in town. They have some options for $10. Their bread is super. Nice service. Will again return.

Delicious mussel burger minus the chips which were rubbish. Should be thin cut fries with mussels surely? Waitress clearly didn’t want to be there and weirdly asked me if I knew my credit card worked before she took it for the tab? All the staff seemed pretty miserable. Good food but let down by staff.

My first time here and I was very impressed with the service. There is so much room and great setting inside. The food was very nice. I had the warm lamb salad, one had a warm pork belly salad, one had a vol a vunt of chicken and duck and one had mussle. We were all satisfied with our meals. I will go back there again. Very impressed!

Came in for Sunday brunch as we were craving waffles and our usual waffle place was packed! The waffles were a bit tough and chewy, not fluffy like i had hoped. Price was reasonable and staff were friendly, but not my favourite place for waffles in the city. I will definitely be back during the evening at some point though as the beer list looks great!

Not a big deal. Bit pricey. Nothing much of selection to eat. Event they say it's Leuven Belgium beer cafe they don't have Kasteel Rouge. Good thing is they open till late.

Totally, absolutely a great find, amazing since we are both very fussy about our food. Service is a high standard, ambience great, and hard, in fact not possible for me to find fault. A pleasant experience, especially after a nearby restaurant ruined my $40 eye fillet steak.

The service here is unbelievably good. I was met at the door and taken to a table. Water arrived immediately and my coffee no more than 2 minutes later. Breakfast followed within just a few minutes more and was fresh and tasty. It is obvious that the wait staff enjoy their work and it shows!

What an amazing place! Authentic belgium home-style cuisine with a creative combination of flavours which will make your jaw drop. Truly warm atmosphere and great customer service. It's one of those places you'll want to frequent often to delight yourself tasting every available dish. I had the Chicken and Mushroom Crepes as an entree (perfect for 1 big eater or 2 mediums) and the Lamb Rump as a main. No room for dessert, very generous servings! Will come back for sure 😋

Went to Leuven late on a Friday night, unfortunately after dinner had been served. However the late night snack menu was worth the visit as 3 of us shared across 4 plates of food. The atmosphere was nice and staff friendly. We hope to be back, but this time for a dinner.

Lovely decor in this bar, reasonably authentic compared to some of the bars I visited in Belgium. Nice selection of beers and nice that they come in the beer specific glasses and they top off the foam etc. I didnt have any food on this occasion but have previously and it was very good.

Great atmosphere and the best service I've ever encountered. The mussels were melt in your mouth perfect.

We were staying at IBIS Wellington and coincidentally Leuven was just around the corner. We had 500ml of beer each with chicken liver pate(snacks) and it compliments the beer very well. We want to encore But unfortunately had to check out the next day! We will be back!

We were very excited about ordering some mussels as we went on a night where you buy one lot and get another for $5. They were cooked to perfection, unfortunately they didn't have a lot of flavour though. The staff were friendly and the service was okay.

The Belgium Beer Cafe is a great institution. Every time I go, I know that there will be excellent service, great food, and even better bier! They provide something different than the normal bar; they have a point of difference. Unique bier, matched with great European food - can't be beat!

The saffron mussels didn't have much flavour and there little to offer the kids. The beer and service was good.

Came here for the double your mussels night. Didn't really enjoy the service nor the food really. The mussels were big and juicy, but they were not cleaned properly, the beard were still intact and it was unpleasant to eat. We ordered two type of flavors- coconut cream and white wine, and to be honest, they both tasted the same, we couldn't to tell which is ehich. We also ordered a salad as side dish but it didnt come with any dressing, just some shredded cheese sprinkle on top. We couldn't finish it.

Belgian beer is excellent, prices are what you would expect given its been imported across the planet. Surprised to be asked quite so many times if I'd like another beer, but there you go. Recommended alternative to local craft beer scene.

I love this place. The beer is phenomenal. The setting, beer and staff are great. I personally don't rate the food as I'm a vegetarian and there are limited options for me - but the rest is great.

Been here twice during Jan. 2018 and had the green lip mussels pot. Both times the sauce in which the mussels were steamed was too thin (that is: too much liquids). Perhaps this can be improved somehow to ne thicker (in other places around the globe, not all mussels are steamed in a thin sauce. Usually it is thicker/heavier). Beer menu is great.

Excellent service and great food and beer. They reliably stock Tripel Karmeliet. Waiter recommended just a starter as mains are good for sharing. Savoury pancakes stuffed with creamy mushroom and chicken are excellent.

Long established, truly Belgian (including a wide range of beers and many mussel options), and consistently reliable for service and good eating. Warm and comfortable inside, outdoor street tables also.

A little disappointed with the fries; they're supposed to be fried twice. The mayonnaise too seemed a bit off (too runny). Otherwise good food, great menu and beer selection, and friendly staff.

Had breakfast here three days inn a row. The salmon and cream cheese omelette was plentiful. The jam, marmalade n Bavarian toast was warming. But the Mon-Fri breakfast specials are the best!! For $9 you get a filling portion of bacon egg n toast or crispy waffle with quality fruit n syrup. Must haves!!!! And, The Mocha that comes with a chocolate on a stick ... !!!!! :D

An amazing beer list, longer than many I could have in the north of the France. Design remember me belgium. Beers are expensive but the pleasure is here. Meat cooked is respected. Easy to access, friendly people.

The service was EXCEPTIONAL. However I was not a fan of the beers I tried and wasn't too keen on the burger I ordered. But that could be my taste preference. I would happily dine again and try something different.

One of the best places to eat and drink in wellington. Authentic Belgium beers on tap great food all day. The service is always amazing and usually why I make two there every time I'm in wellington

I go to Leuven occasionally as a treat. I love the ambience with the dark brown panelling and furniture. The staff are always helpful, even when busy, in my experience. The food menu is different to other places of course, being based on Belgian cuisine. There are mussels, yes, but plenty of choices for everyone apart from that. I just love nursing a large Leffe Blonde with good company at Leuven!

The ambience is good. The place look warm and cozy because of the wood materials used..... And the food was tasteful. We had the new zealand mussels, fries and drinks...

We wanted to eat and have matching drinks, the menu sounded amazing but sadly disappointed. The waiting staff member we had was quite rude, table wasn't cleared and I felt we were imposing. Unfortunately, I didn't report at the time as I didn't want to spoil our night out.

When I visited this place in February 2016, it was a shambles. My friend and I were asked to pay in advance for our beverages and immediately we had emptied our glasses , they were whipped away as though they were valuable grail. I VOWED NEVER WOULD I GO THERE AGAIN. Today I visited with my husband thinking if the service was as terrible we would leave. Surprise! It was incredibly civil, so I chose the same seat as before and was truly amazed that the staff w as surprisingly changed into cheerful agreeable people. How this happened in a year's time foxed me so that I may consider revisiting . Please keep your present staff .

I called into the pub last Saturday (27 Aug 2016)before the second Aussie rugby test. Very, very busy with professional, top service. Served gluten free bread without complaint after asked. Well done!

Excellent mussels but service was slack

Decent seafood choices, but nothing spectacular, and a bit pricey. Tomato sauce on grilled mussels was too spicy and took over the flavour of the mussels and the melted cheese, so it's hard to say if the cheese was good or bland. Never been to Belgium, but compared to mussles I've had across France this was nowhere as good. I also don't remember seeing curry, coconut cream, and lemongrass as ingredients for steamed mussels dishes in Europe, so I would guess these choices are not authentic but rather adapted for NZ market.

Good beers, great food especially if you love seafood, brilliant ambience. Had their mussel burger , loved it!!! Good stuff leuven, always a pleasure to visit you!

The beers great... just be warned it is quite expensive but you pay for what you get.

It always makes me feel a little ill paying $23 for a beer you buy for €2.20 in any supermarket in Europe... however, when in the Antipodes. Staff are very attentive but ffs, at least try to pronounce the items as they're written on the menu! Me: I'll have the roquefort. Waiter: the blue cheese. Me:...looks at him. Waiter: I don't speak French. 🤔🙄

I have been going on and off for a few years and I find the food ok. I'm not sure why I can't be more enthusiastic, perhaps it's the price. However, I do really like the selection of beers. Again not cheap but a glass of Leffe Brun is worth a try when you a passing

I don't usually enjoy beer, but the bartender actually found one that I really enjoyed drinking! Great food and service as well, would certainly recommend and can't wait to return.

Steamed mussels were rather bland in a watery broth - not much wine and garlic to be tasted.

Every time I visit Wellington I head to the Leuven for the excellent beer, delicious mussels and the famous cone of chips. Upon being politely seated at the table we were asked if we wanted any beverages at which we readily ordered the dark brew of leffe with delight. At this point the female staff member advised us there were no mussels on the menu. "No mussels?,". We cried"how can this be?,". The staff member said very sorry but there are no mussels I've just been told. My sister and I were perplexed and puzzled , I mean how could the main speciality of the Leuven menu be "off" the menu. Swallowing our enormous disappointment we chose (albeit reluctantly) other items and placed our order. The food we received cannot be faulted. All was good. Not as good as the anticipated mussels but hey, what do you do. The food was eaten and I went and paid. While paying I was asked how the meal was and I said "well it was a shame there were no mussels". The female taking my payment looked at me with a confused look and asked me what I meant by "no mussels". A conversation ensued at which it became apparent that there had in fact been mussels on the menu and it must have been a language barrier with the waiting staff member who had served us. Not sure whether to laugh or cry I paid for the meal with a sigh. Moral of the story: get a second opinion if told something is off the menu.

A classic Belgium style bar. Offering 500ml servings of Leffe, I highly enjoyed myself here. Great wooden paneling everywhere with a warm, welcoming feel.

They have Leffe Brune, and that's an immediate five star rating from me. Ambience is decent, didn't get a chance to try the food but will be back for sure!

Nice quiet place for a mid afternoon beer. Rustic decor and a wonderful atmosphere, this is the place to come for a Belgian tap beer. It'll hit your back pocket though at $16 for a pint

Love this place! Good food reasonably priced and friendly staff. Can be busy at peak times so may pay to book if doing dinner.

Excellent service. Went there for breakfast and was greeted immediately. Ordered the special and it was brought out within minutes of ordering. Staff were very attentive of my needs.
