Reviews of Midnight Espresso
K. J. v. D.
The best Coffee ☕ 😋 in Cuba st. Love the lot's of positive energy from the staff members. The artistic interior design is very good for the total experience. I really recommend this place for a visit with friends and family. Cheers
A. G.
Brought my Aunt who is vegetarian for lunch and a coffee. Had a really nice lunch. It was busy but efficient service. I have the corn fritters with bacon - which was so good and my Aunt had a gluten free toasted sandwich which she said was great.
This place certainly has a great vibe going and we will be back
L.
I love this cafe, it has a wonderful buzz. Located in Cuba street with a funky decor.
There is a good selection of food and it's really good as is the coffee.
Staff are both friendly and helpful. One of my favourite cafes in Wellington.
K. B.
I love this vegan cafe. They were infact one of the few places open during new year holiday period for service (with a bit of surcharge on items ofcourse)!! Love it. They are open till late I believe and if you ever need a healthy food alternative, recommend this. The staff and atmosphere is great!
j.
Vegetarian options and great coffee. I've been in Wellington for a couple of months, and enjoy the food options, always hard to decide just which option to have, and pleased with my choices. I just wish the music could be toned down a bit, what with the hitting on the side of the coffee waste bin every time they make a coffee, its too loud to talk to the person you are with.
C.
What a cool place to go! The coffee is great and the food is good too. I will definitely be back again soon!
P. F.
Great vegan options, delicious coffee and juices. The vegan porridge with a side of fruit salad is a super filling and healthy breakfast and was a good price.
A. T.
I would not even know where to start from to tell how much I love this place. From the vibe, to the great food, amazing vegan chocolate fresh made cakes, to something more easy like the tea, which is very good as well. Extremely recommended
D. C.
Great coffees and teas too. Hip, young vibe but us old folks loved it too. Really nice selection of foods and baked items to go with your drink. Vegan choices too! And a pinball machine.
G. B.
Proper brunch place. Cool vibe. Friendly staff. Good coffee and good food. Corn fritters, berry smoothie and the view on to Cuba St are shown below.
A.
Great coffee and so many food options. It’s always busy so there’s not much seating but it’s also a good place to get sandwiches or cakes to take back home and enjoy if there’s no seats available. The young man at the front counter is very friendly and helpful
J. G.
Place has amazing, retro vibes. Super friendly staff, affordable drinks and just a really great atmosphere. Would highly recommend, especially since it is open until super late so you can grab a cuppa after a night out.
H. B.
Good for a just a drink or a full meal. Everything made fresh and loads of vegan options. I've been here several times and never disappointed. The nachos are great.
E. G.
Went there on a recent holiday to Wellington and was by far one of my favourite places we went to. The atmosphere is amazing and the pancakes and mellow yellow juice I got was divine. The prices are pretty high but personally I think fair for what you get. Definitely will come back
R.
Very nostalgic to visit and perhaps the only place left with the vibe of 'old' Cuba St. I learned to play pinball here! Kids, this was once the only place in town where vege/vegan food was the norm, good to see they're still going strong.
C.
Great veg/vegan range. Peanut chocolate brownies awesome. Great coffee.
V.
Such a fun atmosphere! I highly recommend checking out the loos, too!! No, that's not a trap - they're actually incredible!!!
b.
This place was amazing! The food was delicious! So we’re the drinks! They even have a pinball machine if you’re bored! They also have a very friendly staff.
S. M.
Midnight Espresso is honestly my go to cafe! I'm always open to spend some time there. It's a perfect little place in the middle of the Cuba St. for coffee, tea, snacks, lunch or dinner. There is a really good variety of food options at Midnight Espresso. You can find gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, non vegetarian food here. They have something for everyone.
Despite the fact that the cafe is a little confined, it still has a lot to serve. There is a Star Wars pinball game, one of the tables has an old school game in it. The walls have beautiful artwork on them. There are some perky elements in the cafe which give a unique vibe to the entire cafe.
R. C.
We come here often late evening...great coffee and food. HOWEVER...the last few days the lack of a bus person has been really noticeable. The tables are covered with dirty dishes...it is just too much for a staff of only 2 people, one front counter and one cooking. Pix at 11:30pm on a Sunday.
W. F. G.
Cool ambience with great selection of cabinet foods and menu. Quick service and lovely staffs
A. V.
Went here because of the recommendation of a friend and I‘m so glad he told me about this place. THE best Chai I‘ve ever had! Such a rich taste and perfect for a cold day. Don‘t miss out on this cute little Café, cakes looked delicious as well.
C.
Awesome spot. Staff are super friendly, lotta options for food&drinks, and they do coffee till late. One of the best in town
G.
Great cafe, vegan options.. some best coffee around..open later than most ..
Good competent staff.very friendly.
G. F.
A really solid option if you want nice coffee or good food any day of the week at all hours (nearly). The homemade sweets and cakes are great with regular vegan options. This place is quite hipster which brings a lot of unique decor decorations alongside the different food on the menu. I loved it and have been multiple times. There is even a pinball machine right in the middle of the cafe! I also appreciated that it stays open late and had enjoyed the good coffee and cakes on offer.
L.
My favourite late night spot in Wellington, good food and great drinks. I personally recommend the hit chocolate and berry brownie
B. M.
Great place to come for late in the day coffee. Good variety of counter food. I really like the sweet food they have an offer. :) Sometimes the music is a bit loud to make good conversation. But I always enjoy going there.
A. W.
Amazing food and coffee. The art in the bathrooms is really cool too. Will definitely be back 🙂🙂
J. M.
A Wellington establishment. You haven't fully explored Cuba street until you've been to Midnight. I had a really good hash stack today! Staff are lovely, vegan/vegetarian ranges are 👌. Not great seating if you want to sit down with friends, but it's the perfect place to grab coffee from as you wander around.
c. d.
laughed a little too hard at a waiter who quietly told me and my 3 friends "Good luck." with two large vegan nachos between us and a thickshake.
We finished in 10 minutes. It was delicious.
Friendly staff, I have a timid personality so was a little intimidated by the very chill till-tender but they were friendly as hell and didn't mishear my order which is 10/10 in my book. The nachos were delicious as usual and I appreciate the little comment made by the waiter.
E.
One of the best hangouts. My friends and I found this place when we were looking for a place that's open until late. Started going there every week since then. They have a lot of vegan options and the staff is really nice.
P. K.
This is a dive cafe, if that concept exists. The staff kick knives along the floor back to the kitchen. Their cakes sometimes have wilted flowers on top. The bacon and brie croissant is the nicest way to gain weight yet invented. The staff are non-homogenised. Not everyone's mum will like this place, but if your mum likes it, she had a well lived life.
T. J.
My wife really liked this place, a shame we only had hot drinks at the end of the night here. The food looked good and there was plenty of choice, I found the coffee a little to bitter for my taste but the pot of tea was very much appreciated.
D. H.
Good strong coffee. Appealing food and good vibe. Kinda a boho feel with Arty painted walls and eclectic taste in furnishings.
k.
One of my favorite places to people watch and chill alone with a smoothie and a small something from the kitchen.
S.
Went here today. Great friendly staff and vibe, great food. Very pleasant experience. Kapai people!! ❤️
S. S.
Great food in this funky we place. Both menu and cabinet were fantastic.
T. H.
Being the original espresso bar in Wellington, you can expect great coffee, tasty and unique counter foods, and the cheapest long black / Americano around! Photo via Instagram @tomhuthwaite

Midnight is the atypical cafe so well known to Wellington’s cafe culture. I recommend it to everyone saying that want something unusual from welly but get a great coffee.
Food is offbeat but excellent, coffee is exceptional, particularly a mocha if that’s your go to.
Well worth a visit, enjoy its character.
L. B.
Brilliant spot, great cabinet, looks like absolute ballz in the bathroom, but I guess that's aesthetic?
Contrary to popular belief, it's actually open at times other than midnight!
How good. -7/-5 you work that one out
S. C.
First night we came here excellent coffee, the best we’d had on our NZ trip! Second day, the two girl barista’s were complaining loudly about their roster and management in front of a long queue of customers... no one needs to know or cares, and it’s super unprofessional. The coffee also wasn’t as good because they were clearly distracted.
C. S.
THE BEST CAFE IN THE Wellington HANDS DOWN perfect coffee everytime. Open late awesome food. Serves arguably the best coffee in town and its super affordable. A true Wellington Icon.
K.
Awesome place for coffee, food and great pinball.
J. S.
This place *still* has it, after all these years. The original Cuba St. café that still charges original Cuba St. prices for their coffee. Great counter food options for vegan/gluten-free eaters. Friendly, vibrant and knowledgeable staff. If coffee is the lifeblood of Cuba St., this might just be its heart - or perhaps soul? The only drawback would be its popularity - you might have to share a seat or a bench. Enjoy the pinball!
t. e.
Great place with the heaps of character and atmosphere. I go here regularly and get my favourites but have not even tried the other 90% of options. Really good range of juices, vegan, vegetarian, and regular dishes. I hope they continue for many years to come.
P.
Nice food excellent coffee at fair prices. 2nd time there as a visitor to Wellington
C. W.
Awesome coffee, good food at a good price and super friendly staff
K. D.
Classic must visit place in Wellington. Our fav is vege nachos 👌👌👌
K.
Great spot, Awesome food and drinks, milkshakes are brilliant
T. W.
A cool little cafe next to S&M's bar on Cuba Street offering hot beverages and an assortment of omnivore, vegetarian & vegan fare. Fair prices and reasonably-sized portions. A little noisy.
R.
Amazing coffee shop with many opitions and coffees. It's the Best because the price acess
D. T.
Slightly dark and grungy but amazing food at fair prices and really strong coffee. Also open early and late. One of my favourite Wellington spots for locals
A. W.
Coffee was mediocre, french toast quite dry, mint leaves tasted like they had been cut with the some implements that had been used to cut onion, service was poor - no table number system, confusion as to where meals were going, had to go find our own dirty looking cutlery from the counter after meal brought out. Vibes nice enough - lots of potential with a good barista, and better systems to manage service / more competent staff.
P.
Lovely service, even with it being such a busy Saturday afternoon! Very nice coffee. Good vibes. Great place. Reccomend.
M.
Is always vibrant and snacks and coffee are simple and good.
L.
Wonderful staff, super accommodating batista who went out of their way to make sure we had non-peanut contamination due to allergies. Great food, great coffee 😊

Hey listen these 5 stars I gave, do not show the other 20 stars i give it. I mean when i go to this legendary Midnight Espresso, Coffee for a cafe on Cuba and i want to see yummy, i just look behind the glass & through their righteous cabinet by God, if im feeling dusty, from a viscous bottle the night before, all my dreams come true, when i stumble into this temple of fresh eats, its a luxury that on more than 1 occasion, I seriously have considered ordering everything, bc my mind be like, you just can't order 1 thing alone, from here, the rest of that yummy food, why, they wouldn't stand still for it, yeah thats right, because the staff present it, so magnificently fresh. The important thing to remember at ME ( midnight espresso) , they are consistent and this constant in beverages and in food, putting it all together, means i will seek out this cafe, no matter what part of town , i stayed in for 24 hours. it works for me like a charm. I'm so undecided, about life, but never about eating and drinking from Midnight Espresso, everything looks so good, and all of it so yummy and fresh buzzy and healthy bright , i will get a sandwich or bagel filled, to eat there and then with a beautiful cafe, no milk, a little bit of water on the side. Omg.everything just bristled with goodness and bulges, lols, this morning, again. This Food is so tasty and awesome, even the people that order their usual morning coffee, to go, hot dayum 😍 🔥, they are very pretty and friendly, which is the best way to be, to me in the morning.. when I go there, I keep meaning to photograph my breakfast even the sandwich I will take away and be enjoying the eating of it, in the late afternoon, and everytime, i go there, well gee my munchies are so massive, there never are any pictures, so did it happen? You ask yourself ?? because the food there is that good, in the blink of an eye, 1 of the world's greatest photographers forgets about the film stock, and be that as it may, forgets about the actual camera, why, you ask. Well what is that telling you. Y.U.M.M.Y.
N.
A Wellington institute. Step back into this early naughties cafe on Cuba Street. Hustle to find a nook or a table for 2, and don't forget to get a piece of the chocolate cake with your Havana coffee fix. The date and cinnamon bun is also a winner.
V. W.
Then for lunch we got a delicious sandwich and a big piece of chocolate cake! Prices were the best we found in all of New Zealand! Which is why we came back again! Love the vibe of this cafe. Old/hip theme. Staff was super friendly and they even are environmentally friendly which is always a bonus! Gave us a free coffee that was made in front of us because they didn't want to waste it
M. D.
Came here for breakfast and lunch! For breakfast we had a vegan quiche and scone.

Big meals, great cabinet food, service was quick and efficient. Good buzz and a zany place. We are happy to see it open on Good Friday when everything else was closed.
S.
Absolutely fabulous coffee. The display of cakes, brownies and savoury treats is worth a visit. A great funky cafe.
T.
Very beautiful cafe with a great atmosphere!
My cappuccino was delicious and quite large for the price. Also the team is very nice, polite and always helpful. What should be mentioned is the big selection of fresh, self made food that looks just fantastic(I tried the brownie - it was awesome!).
I think this was one of my favorite places in Wellington
R. T.
I'd heard great things about this place so expectations were high.
Staff were friendly, even though it was really busy. Venue is kinda kitsch but not super comfy. Food was tasty, portions were huge! Some great vegan options. This place is an institution honestly, there's not many better menus for vegans in Wellington.
It's always changing it counter treats too.
Its open super late which is a massive bonus for vegan treats late at night.
It's nice but perhaps when it's less busy and the coffee could be nicer.
D.
This cafe is a Wellington treasure. Wicked vibe, awesome coffee and food. They have pretty alternative funky music playing most days, always something a bit different depending on the staff on shift that day. Open till late at night, this cafe is my first choice for good food (definitely recommend the Nacho's), smoothies and coffee. Solid atmosphere for relaxed catch ups. The place is no secret, it's frequently packed.
G.
Great coffee, good food... Very casual vibe and friendly staff. Quirky decor complete with pinball and spacies machine. Has been going for years and never lost its popularity. Late hours mean that it is always an option for a coffee and cake before heading home
E.
Lovely staff, yummy food, friendly service. Personally I thought the staff were quite over worked, a new serving/counter system would work wonders as it's a bit awkward at the moment, no one knows what way or where to stand. Would also benefit from having table numbers so it's not so confusing for the kitchen staff.
B.
Lovely staff , up there for the best coffee in Wellington, Carmel slice is something you need to try
M.
Great value for money, great cheap coffee, great reasonably priced food. Lots of vege and vegan options. Nice staff.
L.
Came here for an evening coffee and treat and found the cafe to be comfortable and inviting, the atmosphere was great.
We came back for breakfast, and the food was very enjoyable.
The cafe staff were friendly and down to earth.
Also A LOT of vegan options which is a plus!
K. B.
Great spot for a good coffee! Feels very genuine, friendly staff. I had a mocha - very well done. I did not have a chance to try their food, but they had a wide selection of pastries and other treats. I would recommend!
A. C.
The food and drinks were awesome!! however it seemed like for such a busy day (a Sunday) more staff are needed to help clear the tables. My party of people was there for a good 40 mins. however we noticed staff were serving customers, but weren't taking away any of the used cups/plates from previous customers. (serving, but heading back towards the kitchen empty handed)
S. T.
Always tasty and have a wide selection. We tend to always get the nachos with hummus. So good. Small size is probably enough for three people.
They have milkshakes too. Our friend had a banana one and said it was good. The staff are lovely and polite. Always good service here.
S.
eggs on toast were average. coffee was excellent
T.
Cool, trendy cafe with delicious food and excellent coffee. The service wasn't great, but maybe that's part of the 'charm'?
J. J.
The coffee here is some of the cheapest in the city. Their food is good and fairly priced which is hard to find on Cuba street. This is really the only late night cafe in Wellington so it's my go-to cafe at all hours. The staff are efficient and polite. During busy times it can be hard to find a seat so don't be surprised if you have to wait or have your coffee as takeaway.
S. J.
The best late night hot chocolate spot in Wellington. 11pm-3am is hot choc time. They have lovely staff who are always happy to chat. Great selection of cabinet food available. Caters really well for special diets like vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free. Great character to the place with quirky art on the walls. Can’t beat it for a late night cafe.
S.
A true Wellington icon. Great cakes, slices and other food too, not to mention really good coffee as well. The place is totally unpretentious and you can even buy freshly roasted beans to takeaway with you. Great decor and a good vibe in general. Pop a seat by the window and do some serious people watching as Wellington passes by.
P.
This place is a wellington feature has been around for ages, has a great range of delicious food with both vegan and gluten free options available. Cheapest coffee by far yet still definitely in the top 5 for quality.
J. W.
An old standard still relevant and still awesome. Great food with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options and the coffee is top notch and well priced compared to rivals. The queuing system to order your food/drinks is a little weird so be sure to watch a regular to get it right - you join the queue at the very back of the counter then move forward to where the cashier is and if there's too many people in the queue it doubles back in itself like a V shape. I've seen lots of confused looks from people not knowing where to join the queue :)
B.
Small and cozy spot in the heart of Cuba Street.
The decor and atomosphere of this coffee shop makes it unique from typical cafes in Wellington.
Worth to stop at for great coffee and deli food (many vegan options too!)
S. J. (.
They make great coffee and are obviously open much later than lots of other places. You get the feeling like you're in the 90's or 00's inside, in a good way, where it's relaxed and has a mix of people. Their cabinet food is always plentiful and delicious.
A. F.
Funky and popular cafe with good beats. High turnover of staff means lack of consistency with coffee, and cabinet food displays a bit iffy on hygiene. Has delicious vegan desserts regularly
I. M.
Had the large vegan nachoes between 4 and were all satisfied with the size and price. The cabinet was stocked with good lookin options, it was difficult to choose. Great range of vegan foods. Had both cakes (vegan) - chocolate and kiwi - both were delicious.
I. T.
I am so grateful that in little ol' Wellington we have a cafe willing to stay open so late and provide us with quality food and much needed coffee especially. I come here with my mum at least two times a week and could not be more satisfied with the friendly service and unique environment. Keep doing what you're doing!
D. H.
Great coffee and cakes! Reasonably priced too.
C. L.
An eclectic little cafe. We ordered a creaming soda milkshake, French toast, a cookie from the cabinet and a coffee. The French toast was good, with banana, berries and a little jug of syrup. The chocolate chip cookie from the cabinet was too hard, but still yummy. They forgot my milkshake order, so I had to go up and remind them about it. It wasn't anything outstanding when I did get it, though the size was quite good, as you can see from the photo. It's interesting because they don't have a number system for orders, and one of the staff just walks out of the kitchen with food and yells out what the order is. I guess it's a small enough cafe, and kiwis are an honest enough bunch overall.
o.
Staff here are awesome. Never seen Jack in a bad mood. Always brightens my day or night.
J.
Good food and coffee reasonably priced. Good atmosphere although music is sometimes a few decibels too loud
J.
The choice of food is quite diverse with a selection of vegan options. The dishes are very neatly presented and the quality of the produces used is of a very high standard which contribute to the dishes being full of flavours. The decor is alternative and retro. I have only ever been there for brunch and have always managed to get a seat to eat but as it's a very busy location so it pays to be there early.
T. D.
Good food at a good price. Always has vegan options! Love the vegan chocolate cake. The music is always good here too. Nice to have access to a rad spot late nights.
I. d. R.
Very good Espresso I must say. Coming from someone who's had quite a few of them in Italy. The interior was nice as well tho I didn't really like the fact that the music that they had on was as loud as it was. I'm perfectly fine with music on, but it was just too loud in my opinion
N.
This is Cuba St. Has been for decades. Been coming here since I was a callow young actor.
P. G.
Loved it!!
I am from the old dirty Newtown in Sydney, Australia from the 80-90's and this was where I felt the most at home in Wellington. A flash back to the bohemian times.
The coffee was pretty good and I would recommend the cakes and pastries.
Check out the old tabletop video games from the 80-90's.
Great murals too.
J.
Cozy place with a delicious and amazing cakes. Good place to have a coffee in the most famous street in Wellington
A. D.
Good quality food available until very late. Lots of vegan options, with meals being slightly variable, but always good. Servings are relatively large, and coffee is very decent.
The vegan options are not an afterthought, and there are some impressive ingredient substitutes.
G. S.
This morning I ordered scrambled eggs on toast. Reasonably priced and yummy. Midnight espresso is known for there brilliant atmosphere, it never lets me down. Only reason I didn’t give a 5 Star is because the staff weren’t friendly, though since I work in hospitality I understand what it’s like when your busy and under pressure. Sometimes just a smile is enough though!
J.
A Wellington coffee icon not to be missed. Gorgeous cakes and desserts, good coffee, and a varied menu. Vegans - try the afghan cookie, chocolate heaven. Often very busy but worth the wait.
A. D.
Perfect for anyone. Offer great vegan, vegetarian options that are great even if your not. There cabinet food is always packed and delicious and the coffee is really good! Would recommend there nachos or there big breakfast.
I.
It is awesome that we can get coffee late in the evening. The concept of this place is interesting and the vibe is enjoyable. Food and drinks? Mediocre, I would say.
c.
You can get vegan milkshakes here! And they're delicious. The snickers shake is awesome, sweet but not over the top. It actually tasted like a snickers bar melted into ice cream. Totally blew me away. Best of all, they're open until 3am! They also serve breakfast until 4pm, crazy, right? Lots of vegan and gluten free selections, too, including desserts. Has a post punk vibe. If you're vegan, totally check it out.
P.
Very original and artistic decoration, friendly staff and great food! Vegatarian, vegan and gluten free food available. And multiple options as well, as many other vegetarians or vegans know, there is usually not much to choose from a menu. But this place has it covered. One of my favorite spots in Wellington!
C.
I like this place because I work nights and it's one of the only cafes open late. The vibe is great, the coffee is good, the food is stale in the evening but that's expected. The queue can get quite long, even at night, but that's also fine. My only problem here is the massive over-it attitude problem of the staff, which is common in trendy cafes but somehow especially bad here. You serve coffee darling, crack a smile even for the irony.
R.
Open until late with a very nice atmosphere, staff are friendly and the range of vegan items are always good! Anybody who comes here should get the nachos, and the coffee is also nice :)
I. W.
I've lived in wellington for more than half my life, and this is my all time favorite cafe. AWESOME coffee, food, music, people, position... there's really nothing i dont like! other than sometimes i cant get a seat cause it seems everyone loves it as much as me... especially awesome baking :D
D.
My favourite cafe in Wellington! Awesome hit drinks, counter food and just had my first cooked breakfast here- very yummy. Relaxed atmosphere and prices are reasonable. Plus, the staff are always friendly, especially when it is busy.
L.
Awesome atmosphere, great food! Excellent range of vegan options.
J.
Fun, great music, food well priced, cakes delicious, retro Ameticano feel, with pinball machine. Great coffee and shakes too.
N. L.
I always enjoy dining at midnight expresso. The price is very fair considering the quality and portion of food we get. I tried the vegan smoothie for the first time and absolutely loved it! I like my smoothies to be more on the thick side and the consistency was just perfect for me.
J. F.
This place is great for breakfast, coffee, lunch, snacks or dessert. There's a large and ever changing counter menu of cakes, pastries, bakes, lasagnes, sandwiches etc, with several labelled vegan and/or gluten free items each day. There is also a large blackboard menu, with many vegan and gluten free choices. The only downside is having to queue to get a look at the counter, and sometimes it can be quite noisy.
J. R.
An awesome spread of counter foods, and more (the board says they can often do vegan and/or gluten free if that's a requirement for you :). Superb coffee served up by happy bubbly staff. We were two happy customers.

It's a very nice place but it can look pretty daunting as a lot of the things they have here don't really look that nice.
It's hard to describe, but there pastries look a little dry, their cakes look a little hard and their drinks don't look like anything special.
BUT... how wrong I was, beautiful food, gorgeous drinks and great service.
Lovely lovely lovely place!
M. L.
What an amazing cafe experience for typical Wellington cafe culture.
Fantastic coffee, the mocha was to die for!
Had the bacon hash stack which was like a eggs Benedict on steroids, fabulous and very filling.
Great food and atmosphere. Thanks girls.
B. S.
I love this place! Midnight always has great service, and great options for vegetarians / vegans. The food is delicious, and it's been one of my favourite cafés since moving to Wellington in 2007.
T.
Found this place after needing coffee late at night. Good coffee and great atmosphere
C.
Good coffe and nice street veiw. Reasonable price.
C. J.
In the heart of Cuba street is a funky cafe with alternative electronic music beating a pulse. Fluorescent street art adorns the toilet walls and makes for interesting reading.
They offer an extensive vegan and gluten free range , the only meat I could see was ham/bacon.A great selection of cabinet food beautifully displayed teases you on arrival. If juices are your thing try a Dr Nix fruit juice blend. The staff are attentive cheeky and help keep the vibe moving.
D.
A Cuba st institution and quintessentially part of the character of the street. Predominantly vegetarian and vegan food with good portion sizes. Huge range of cabinet food and drinks. The service may some times take a while but is worth the wait.
Also includes a pinball machine, wall murals and lots of local advertising for art and music events.
T. H.
Great coffee, but neither of the breakfasts we received were very good. The person who I was with who'd recommended it said it wasn't up to the usual standard, so hopefully they were just having a bad day. I'll give it another go when I'm next in Welly.
A. B.
A great place to chill and watch the happenings of Cuba street.
Their service was good even though they were so busy.
The pancakes I had were great and the yogurt on the side was a nice touch, slightly different to the usual.
T.
Delicious coffee and amazing food!
Was such a lovely breakfast after flying half way around the world.
So many vegan options.
J.
Midnight Express is beyond superb. Superb coffee, food and friendly staff. The cafe also has a lovely ambience and a pinball machine 😀
P.
Love the vibe, awesome food, friendly staff, character, pinball. Epic nachos and best coconut hot chocolate in town. One of my fave places in Wellington
P. D.
The best coffee in town and the only place I know that has a vegan cheesecake. Absolutely Devine and the staff are really friendly too. Sit back and see all the Cuba St culture come together in harmony.
A. H.
Though pricey, the food is very good and in large servings. They cater very well to vegans and those with dietary restrictions. It's got a cool vibe, though is often crowded.
B. C.
Came here for coffee and asks!! Pretty tasty cappuccino but not so pleased with the sweets.
M.
Very hip cafe. Generous food portions and loads of Vege and vegan options. Yum!! Cool art on the walls
P. H.
They are a Wellington institution and the only downsides are (a) sometimes a long queue at the counter to order food/coffee) and (b) annoying customers who sit at the video games table seats when they aren't playing it and I want to play Space Invaders! It has a selection of dozens of classic video games. Funky decorations and a really good range of vegan and vegetarian food options (although I am neither). They are still open until 3:00am most nights and it is great to sit on the stools at the window watching the world go by on Cuba Street - be it day or night. I have been coming here and doing that since about 20 years ago when I worked night shifts as a computer operator!
T.
Casual & trendy place for catching up with friends or a quick bite. Opens early and closes at 3am. All meals and snacks available and the barista does strong Havana coffee. Fits groups up to 5. Right at the top end of Cuba St.
j.
Great food and coffee. Heaps of vege and vegan options too
G.
Every time I've been here I think it's super overrated. The staff I have encountered aren't particularly friendly - The last person who took my order was a rude. I answered their question and they said something else and I didn't hear them and asked them to repeat themselves and he rolled his eyes and said very dismissively "don't worry", didn't make eye contact with me againa and left me alone to pay. When the girl bought my friends drink over, she called it out across the end of the room (because they don't give numbers or number tables apparently) and when my friend said "yup that's mine" she slammed it down very rudely and left without a word. Food is average at best as well. Meh vibe overall.
D. W.
One of Wellington's iconic cafés that makes great coffee, serves up delicious café food and caters for all diets, vegan, GF etc. Does great milkshakes too. Located in the Cuba district where it fits right into the culture of this region of the city. Recommend the home made hash browns with breakfast. Fantastic!
O.
Just awesome. Great food! Coffee wasn’t ultra awesome but still good!
Edit: Went there again. Cake was really not good at all (Peachy Slice / Vegan) this time 😕
J. G.
Great tasting cabinet food and a perfectly made long black. There have been many a night when my coffee craving just needed to be satiated. I am just so glad that Midnight Espresso always comes to the rescue!
L.
Really inviting, nice place to chill. Food service can be a bit slow and portion sizes seem to vary though.
S. W.
Good vibes there and nice food. Food is decorated in an almost arty style.Quick service and normally very friendly staff. Almost always good music, newspaper s to read and pinball machine, as well as old 80ies computer games (space invaders, pacman, etc.) on one table. Also you can buy Havana coffee here.
R.
We go here whenever we are in Wellington. It is interesting as well as serving a good range of food at reasonable prices.
P.
Great varieties of food. Amazing vegetarian and vegen options. Just a little short on staff. otherwise highly recommend. Time is also a big yes for people traveling, working or studying late.
T. N.
Atmosphere good, friendly staff, fast service but the food was overpriced. I had the Vegetarian Hash Stack is $17 and certanly was not enenough for a hungry person. It was tatsty but the primary reason why we have breakfast is because we're hungry and this dish did not satisfy. If it was $13 it would be spot on value. Summary - Good place and people but the menu needs work. 3/5
M.
Such a cool vibe in this place and the staff were really friendly. Got milkshakes and they were large for the price and tasted delicious.
T.
Very late night dessert stop after an evening of beers and food, place was quite full mainly with students on laptops. Great selection of desserts, best part it opens till 3pm that's an extra star.
R.
Absolutely loved the selection and food. Service was brilliant too. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience. 💯
H.
Great vibes, great coffee. They have good vegan options including less common options like vegan yogurt. Service is a little unorganised but over all, great place.
H.
Beautiful coffee and so many vegetarian/vegan options! Stunning food! :) Love sitting at the Windows and watching people walk by
A. B.
Unfortunately staff didn’t know the difference between an iced coffee and an iced chocolate but we eventually got our hands on both and they were brilliant! Top location, sumptuous atmosphere. 11/10 would liaise here again.
P.
Still $3 for a coffee? Bloody excellent!
T.
Friendly, comfortable and bloody good coffee! Didn't eat there but the foods looked yummy. Definately be back next time in Wellington.
P.
Always a great spot to visit any time of day. Big range of baking and counter food (a lot of it vegan) and the BEST caramel slice. Nice atmosphere too.
E. M.
Amazing place for someone with allergies and dietary requirements! Pumpkin and tofu curry was delicious, and the drinks are very reasonably priced. Cool decor too
Z. C.
When i'm not Midnight, i'm thinking about my next visit! Love all the vegan treats SO much. Fun bathrooms too. Gotta fight for a seat when they get busy though, which is often!
V.
I love this place - a place where everyone fits in and is welcome. Fabulous coffee, wonderful food, great prices, superb staff. My fav is fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, honey and cinnamon and a chai latte. The best. Happy 30th birthday Midnight Exoresso.
C.
Amazing hot chocolate and gf brownie. A bit noisy though. But excellent customer service. And one of the only cafes open till late!
S.
When I come to Wellington I try and visit. Food is yummy but service not as great today as it normally is which was disappointing. Hopefully just an off day
F.
Lovely atmosphere with great tasting cappuccinos. They were very busy but we still received excellent customer service. Would highly recommend.
S.
A bit noisy; good to hear Joy Division as background music even if the vocals were muddy. Great place for a long black coffee and a vegan snack with friends!
I.
Had an amazing pot of earl grey. It was good to be back on Cuba St for a little while. Have always enjoyed Midnight, glad it's still going strong.
L.
Love the staff here and the cofeee is the best good catering for paleo restrictions as well 😀
B.
This place has THE best mochas in the city by a long shot. Super chocolately and sweet. The service is excellent and fast, and the store has a very good vibe. Highly recommend.
T.
Yum food and great service
U.
Great place wish they made more giant chocolate cakes but they do great coffee and veggie nachos. Best place to go if your studying and in need of something sweet at 12am
H.
Consistently great coffee and a uniquely Wellington atmosphere, a classic Wellington hang out
B.
Midnight espresso is pretty nice, and has a great options for vegetarian/vegan diet. It is a classic hipster cafe of wellington, but if you can get over the slight pretentiousness it's very good
M.
They make my favourite breakfast, i could eat the vegan hash stack everyday. Such a good range, great atmosphere and staff.
J.
Fantastic coffee and great food, a wonderful vegan range, awesome vibe and cool staff. Service can be really really slow at lunch time. Always seems to be open late, yay!
M.
Just had the best date scone I've ever had! Coffee was pretty good too :-)
S.
This place is great for a cheap and tasty coffee, friendly youthful staff and delicious nommys for everyone regardless of your dietary requirements ! Should definitely check it out !
S.
A fantastic little cafe right on Cuba St. Servining yummy food and great selection of coffee and tea! Always friendly staff and a great hangout place on any day!
J. S.
My favourite cafe in Wellington. Just great food and coffee for a decent price. So many veggo and vegan options! Super yum.
J.
Great food, great coffee. Extremely understaffed.
S. (.
Really yummy nachos. Vegan options available. They ran out of tofu the day I went so 4 stars out of 5. Would definitely visit again.
L.
It's my go to place for coffee and anything that's vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free or vegan. A good variety in their daily cabinet food and it's open until like 2am if you fancy a hot chocolate at night
J. S.
Amazing range of food including heaps of vegan (and customisable vegan) food and drinks. Love the vegan thickshake and nachos. They also always have a good range of cabinet food!
R.
Always outstanding. Hot Chocolate was delicious and the food amazing. This is our go to breakfast spot when in Wellington and it never disappoints.
A.
Small and welcoming place to grab notes at night or simple cup of coffee. You can order vegetarian/vegan foods here, and play arcade on one of the table there while you wait for your order !
D.
Coffee here is some of the best in Wellington. And that is high praise. A good counter selection to go with it. And a laid back atmosphere. I struggle to walk by Midnight Espresso.
R.
Midnight Espresso is the culture hub of Wellington.
If you're after a coffee or something more decadent, the staff are more than happy to help.
If that isn't enough incentive to come, the prices make the entire effort worth while.
S.
Love this place. Vegan chocolate cake is THE BEST. Cheap eats, chill vibe, great window seats to watch The world go by.
Z.
Great place to enjoy coffee and a bite of something, with fantastic decor.
T. B.
A groovy aesthetic to this place, well-priced coffee and cabinet food and very tasty also! This became a favourite spot of mine on my trip to Wellington
P.
Great coffee! The right place for a long black.
Always open!
J.
Great service, lovely coffee.....maybe 3/4 shots if you like it stronger!!
Yummi omelet & a nice big bowl of muesli, fresh fruit , plain yoghurt & honey drizzled over
R.
The coffee is strong, hot and at a decent price. It always seems to be pretty busy, but with the fast and friendly staff this isn't a problem if you are just after a takeaway coffee.
S. T.
Not my usual place but the only one open here in WELLINGTON on NY Day. Three staff valiantly trying to deal with what looks like half of the city trying to get breakfast. Big 5 stars for the staff but who owns this place? Three staff only on a day like this?
K.
Love this place!! The dairy free whipped cream is awesome. A definite “go to” of mine. Lovely staff. Very wellington. Highly recommended.
N.
Excellent vegan and GF choices . Food yummy. Fast service, not particularly personal as they are so busy. Good coffee.
A.
This place was our favorite breakfast spot for a week in Wellington! The food is worth Michelin star! Not expensive, fast and high quality!
L.
Fams been going here for years. LGBT+ friendly and amazing vibes. Great coffee!
S.
Absolutely freakin Amazing Service and Gluten Free Desserts
S.
Amazing cafe with relaxed vibes and friendly staff. Coffee is great and you can't beat a slice of the cake here 😊
S.
Loveeeee this cafe !! Everyone is soo lovely and the coffee is sublime! One of my favs on a weekend or winter warmer after a night out. Stop in try it for yourself ! Breakfast is good too !!
L.
Good cake massive portions and vegan options for those who need it
H.
Great selection of food for sure, but one star lost due to the fact that all of the servers - particularly females - seem quite uppity and holier than thou. I ordered a veggie drink called "Lucky's VW", and when ordering I pronounced it "Lucky's Vee Double You". The brunette server stared at me for a few seconds, raised her eyebrows in astonishment and declared that "no one has ever pronounced it like that before". She knew full well the drink I was referring to and I would advise this young lady to learn to not take her permanent PMS out on customers. Realise that people only come back again and again for the food - certainly not the snarky so-and-so's who will take your order.
S. H.
So good. The service isn't always friendly if you're unlucky, but that's probably because the food is amazing and they have a queue from early to late - the food is always super quick anyway. Caters to all dietary requirements!
A.
Absolutely amazing, a staple cafe of Wellington. Always busy but worth the wait. Great food made in-house and the coffee is always great
R.
Really cool vibe and nice food, great place to pop into at night

J.
Great coffee (Havana), very good baristas, cool atmosphere, cheap prices, low key, busy but never a long wait. Cheesecakes are like :O
H.
Food and service are very good but atmosphere is more like casino than cafe. Due to popularity, variety, affordability, ‘’fun place to be’, its very busy all day every day.
K.
Great vegan and veggie options, including milk shakes. Friendly staff, pretty place, pin ball machine! Good coffee too
-. S.
Great vegan food choices. lovely coffee and friendly staff. Facilities are old and tired but its part of its hipster charm.

Hit and miss. Sometimes their attempts to make vegan versions of popular baked goods can yield off-putting results. It's a roll of the dice.
