Loved Poppys Cafe so much went there twice. All day breakfasts fab selection even for those who like old fashioned lambs fry ... not for me. Hot cakes were great, and the old fashioned cheesecakes like Nana use to make simply the best for a taste of nostalgia. Great coffee, great food and pleasant helpful service a must visit when you are in Whakatane.

Lovely cafe Good food. But yea 3 waitresses without masks. A bit of a concern. No one asked for my vaccine pass. Would come again but prefer to have a waitress with a mask. Not complaining.

Mediocre food, better going somewhere else. They do not scam vaccine pass and they do not wear masks a lot of the time (staff). Their food is honestly better if you make it yourself at home. Milk shake is just syrup from the super market. Tomato sauce is good though.

Got the steak sandwich... it was average. And an ice coffee... which was more of a cream coffee... probably would not order any of that again. But would try out the stuff on the menu :)

Food looks great in the cabinet, chicken/rice filo was 30% chkn 70% rice, very bland. Egg/ham salad sandwich was tasteless, but the bacon & egg melt was good, also asked for coffees to be in to go cups, came in normal cups, coffee was fine but mocha was watery and tasteless. Wouldn' t go back.

We visited Poppy's recently during a family weekend get together. Our visit began with an introduction to Whakatane by the owner and explained how they had a New coffee machine so if we were after one they were more than willing to oblige but that there could be a bit of a wait due to live teething issues accident. The staff were on hand very smartly to clean and clear up the mess left behind by any tables and to answer our questions about the place and the art fixtures hanging on the walls. They were just amazing in their response and caring attitude. Meantime the rest of us enjoyed our coffees and the beautifully presented brunch meals. The brunch menu was extensive and with a good range of options, some rarely available elsewhere such as lambs fry and bacon - my choice and it was divine. we were served by the owner who was very friendly and efficient .And other staff were clearing and wiping tables down after customers had left the tables . The place was spotless and had lovely paintings round the fairly new painted walls. The down side was the length of time before we got our coffee's but they were worth waiting for as excellent The cafe has some lovely New Zealand landscape photographs and pictures to add to the ambiance. I, and my family, can highly recommend Poppy's Cafe for their food selection, service and presentation; for their coffee and especially for their well trained, efficient and caring staff.

My Thai prawn salad was beautiful, two of our group had the seafood chowder and one had a burger. All thoroughly enjoyed. I’m really fussy with coffee. I went back for a second. Great place, lovely food and friendly staff. We’ll see you again next trip to Gisborne.

Friendly respectful professional prompt customer service with a smile. Food is fresh tasty served on beautiful crockery. Coffee works for me and milkshakes are deliciously creamy and smooth. A range of meals with salads, pasta, fish & chips, seafood chowder to morning teas with fresh muffins savoury and sweet to fresh variety of scones cakes or full board menu. Cafe is spacious with clean restrooms on site.

The coffee was good and loved sitting outside under the umbrellas. The Nachos were the best I've had for a longtime lots of meat and nearly half a tub of cream cheese.... Deffinatley a good portion. The staff were friendly and very accommodating during the four visits we had while on holiday. Inside the plastic look is little sterile but seats comfortable. Thanks guys really added to our holiday enjoyment!

Husband and I were looking for a cafe to cater to our late lunch, i.e. 3:15pm on a Saturday, and happened upon Poppy's. Wow..beautiful food, great selection, good prices and wonderful service. It was a hot day and had choice of spacious outdoor or air-con indoor. Comfortable and attractive place to be. Would highly recommend.

The food was good, the place was clean. The wheelchair access toilet doors were not quite wide enough to fit my mother's wheelchair through, but the staff member we spoke to said that they would have the owner look into that. Would visit again

I love their French toast. You get bacon, a slice of melon, grapes, a perfectly fried banana, two pieces of French toast and a container of maple syrup. That's a perfect combination. The only thing I would change is I would like a bit more egg soaked in the toast. The coffee is really good. I like being able to sit outside. There is enough room between tables. I can't comment on the other food yet. I'd give it five stars except in winter it is too drafty and I head for warmer places like the Bean down the street. I think some judiciously placed moveable screens or barriers around the doors in winter would help.
