Still sitting here writing this.... As word has to go out... Busy very busy night , but made room for us with no hassle. On our roadtrip, the best burgent (and hard to top this)... Nice bun, supper nice chicken and great vegitarian options!. Delicious local drinks (Lads IPA is smooth!) Very friendly staff, specialy knowing it's @ buzzing busy night. Out of curiosity looked at previous (low) reviews... Nothing I read there came as the truth... Maybe a bad night of a kitchen slip-up, but this night was (is) great. Full from the burger menu, but still looking at an desert too.... This place also does takeaways and looking at the glow of customers, all locals must think it's a great place. Well done Whanganui!

Deep fried gluten free stuff is great. I loved loaded fries with spiced Dahl. Good coffee too.

Great food and awesome atmosphere. I like their contribution to the local economy but sourcing their ingredients in an ethical way, even to the point of gifting some produce in exchange for others.

What a lovely experience today at the Citadel Cafe and the Waitresses,Owner,Music was delightful. The decor is lovely with all the healthy plants and it has a quirkiness about it. Not to mention the Chef and his great food. A real gem and doggy friendly.

I don't usually write reviews, but I felt compelled to do so in this case. We went here for lunch on Saturday as a group of six, and I couldn't say enough good things about it! The food was fantastic; I had the burger, which was delicious, and the potato chips they make are out of this world! I believe the gentleman assisting was the owner; it was nice to see an owner with such a pleasant personality, and all of the staff who came to our table were wonderful. Continue your excellent work!!!!

Yummy chicken burgers and iced coffee & iced chocolate. FINALLY a place that makes them right 😁 Service was FANTASTIC, my 17yr old and I were really impressed, especially with a bit of Te Reo Maori thrown in. Great work guys, we'll be back 👍👍 20/10 from us

Such a beautiful place. Lovely crew and super friendly. We had scrolls for breakfast and they were gorgeous and yummy. Generous portion.

Brilliant addition to Castlecliff. Food is delicious and service is probably the best I have ever had. Thoughtful things like hats for people sitting outside is wonderful.

Lunch was just perfect. Fish and chips, salads with fat as wedges, enjoyed everything including the pickled veges. Great atmosphere and awesome staff. Thanks guys. We'll be back.

I had a great time here on Saturday! Took my wife and kids out for a morning breakfast run. The all round atmosphere is great and the food tasted divine! Kids play area was well maintained as well as the out door dinning. 10/10 would recommend Attached are some of our photos.

Great place but expensive!!!! $100 for 4 people to have a breakfast and some of us had cheaper options. I guess if you say $20 for 4 coffees and $20 each for anything off the menu, but yeah guess I'm not into café breakfasts. Eggs Benedict with coffee?? Hmmmm yeah nah just wondering why no specials I'm not into paying a lot for stuff I can cook at home. Nice staff.

Friendly staff, rather small servings unless you get a large burger and frys although frys were minimal. I could have eaten more and im not a big eater. Food taste experience ok to good. Getting a bit high on prices and drinks are very expensive. Food all round used to be better and prices more affordable. I know costs have gone up but not that much. This is Wanganui not a big thriving centre. I know its a balance but think citadel have put prices up to much and serving sizes cut to much. My experiences suggest this was already happening with previous owner and i had decided not to go back because of that but a friend picked the place. I think food taste experience has picked up under new owners but not to where it was a couple of years ago. Just my thoughts.

The staff are quirky and friendly and the food is consistently tasty. This is a good spot if you have kids too as there is a small play area and plenty of food options.

Such a cute cafe, close to the beach, friendly staff, vegetarian and vegan options too. Lots of indoor and outdoor dining areas. We had the dahl loaded chips and fish and chips, a flat white on almond milk and kombucha.

Love Citadel and is a great place to go if you want some awesome loaded fries! Sometimes Citadels opening hours seem to change a little, which is hard to know if they are open or not, however still love to visit Citadel.

Who would have ever thought that castle cliff beach entrance looked fantastic now. And they have this awesome cafe. And the best part is, they serve a few vegan options, I'm very grateful for that. The place is clean, has a covered in porch for winter warmth but can also be opened to gain the summer breeze. Staff are happy and polite. I'll definitely go back and take my friends out for lunch. Thanks Citadel. A big thumbs-up.. 👍.

Although its not open on Wednesdays, its a nice place by the beach to get a bite to eat with friends and family. The chips and burgers are awesome. $15 specials on Thursdays are also a great deal. Great quantity and quality.

An innovative, cute cafe. Good range of seating from indoor to sheltered to outdoor. Quirky way to display table numbers: you stab the stick into a pot with a succulent! The food itself was quite nice, but the wait was slightly long and the construction of the burgers make elegant eating an impossibly. Overall, it has made a good start but has yet reached its full potential.

Great food and lovely atmosphere. Originally went there for the Eggs Benedict after seeing the pictures on google explore Be sure to get there early if you want Eggs Benedict . It is not served after 12pm as it is on the breakfast menu only. On the lunch menu is a nice grilled chicken burger called "Get clucked." Very fast friendly Service.😀

The burgers are always great. I got the Citadel classic this time ❤ We sat out the front in the sun. It was toasty warm. The new service is is also very nice.

We had 18 people for a 21st lunch. The staff and management were very accommodating Amazing service quietly happening in the background as everyone enjoyed themselves and socialised. Amazing food and very reasonable prices. A high quality of food. Very professional. Thank you Citadel for helping to make our sons day special!

We visited The Citadel Cafe for lunch a few months ago while passing by on a road trip. It was very worth the detour by Castlecliff, we would highly recommend the tasty nutritious food here and the friendly team who catered for all our needs and made us feel at home!

A warm welcome and a table found for us. It was a cosy place to be on a wet winter day. We ordered the grown chicken and the Dahl and shared. It was great. The service was friendly. The bathrooms were clean and tidy.

Great little local café. The service is quick and friendly. Not a huge menu but what's on offer is done extremely well. There's a small cabinet selection which is also beautiful too. Best of all is that the cafe is dog friendly so we can sit outside with our pooch when we go for a walk. Perfect!

The chicken bacon salad for lunch was great. Sadly my wifes friend and myself had sticky date pudding for dessert. I think they may have been past their sell by date. No pun intended. Otherwise lovely place for good food.

Good welcoming friendly staff. Atmosphere warm, relaxed and top notch! Not a big selection of meals however.... they are creatively well presented and very delicous of which I would much prefer to a huge selection of mediocre meals. So what I'm saying is with the small menu choice they have, it is done very well and is delicous. Quality over quantity wins for me and that is what you'll get here.

Endearingly quirky cafe with exceptional food and coffee. It was really busy when we went but recieved our orders super fast. The staff were really personable and went out of their way to ensure our satisfaction. Well worth the drive!

Went there because it was named as 'Northland's best burger'? on the lonel planet, so went there with high hopes... Beforehand i looked at the menu, looked alright, $10 for a 'gormet cheeseburger', but opened the menu to find it was $15. Ordered the calamari for $14.50 and was presented, after 15 minutes, with a spoonful of salad drowned in oil, lots of aioli (best part of my dish), and maybe 7 thin pieces of salty calamari... i thought it came with chips and someone from my group who ordered the fish/chips (same price), it came with one piece of fish and maybe 5 chips, 2 sauces, and some lettuce leaves. The fish was pretty good but the chips were very salty and oily too. The classic burger was alright, but the patty was over cooked and burnt, but nice bun! The $6.50 5cm slice of 'oreo cake' was underwhelming and the waffle pops were bland, but very fun to eat and a cute idea! However I loove the atmosphere, the staff were pretty nide, and it seemed pretty busy. However the food took a long time to come out and the portions were quite small, and it was pretty pricey and the taste was pretty average. But loove the vibe and the deco, I wish that there were more options and that some came with more 'sides', i wanted the chicken but it was only chicken...

We have only recently discovered this place as it's a long way out of town for us. It's serves the best coffees' in Wanganui and staff members do not treat you like 'another number'. You can even bring your own coffee cup along and the drink will still be delicious.

Huge serving sizes, I had an iced chocolate, the beast burger and large fries, the burger was gigantic, I had to eat it in pieces instead of as a burger, the fries look more like wedges they were massive and delicious and the iced chocolate was divine!! Definitely recommend the citadel!!

A great set of options on the menu including a great selection for Vegan & Vegetarian options. Burgers, Salads, Something for the Kids and lots more choices on the counter a well. Certainly well worth a visit and another great recommendation from another local AirBnb host. Friendly staff and a great atmosphere in a local village. Enjoy. PS Only complaint ... Please don’t leave the dog to roam the tables and eat from the finished tables.

Once upon a time this place was an old often closed Auction shop, i lived there 30 yrs ago. Beautiful how it has been conditioned into a characteristic cafe. Service was excellent, food was delicious and LOVED being greeted and served in Maori.

Love the great burger options, there is something for everyone! Pretty good pricing too, and the chips are amazing! A cool atmosphere, hip I suppose, but kid friendly. There is a sand pit and play house for kids to play in while you enjoy your burger. I recommend trying this place, especially on a sunny day!

An awesome Relaxing Cafe near the beach. Huge Hamburger meals that more than fill a gap. Also hot and cold drinks and various cabinet snacks. This Cafe is easy accessible. The Staff here are super friendly and very Obliging. I love it that you can sit outside, enjoy the bustle of Rangiora Street and even take your pooches. Doggie water bowls provided.

Was our first time eating there. The burgers are very tasty but!! Thought the the 6 or so chips we ordered to go with our burgers should possibly be included in the price of the burgers :( as they are quite pricey just on their own. Salad i ordered with fish was abit underwhelming very yum though.nice relaxing atmosphere.

A lovely experience, wonderful fluffy scones served with aromatic, full bodied coffees with thick holding rich milk froth. Great music, not too loud, giving a welcoming ambience. Great attentive cheerful staff.

Stopped for lunch on the way from Wellington to New Plymouth. What a fantastic location with local flora growing outside close to the beach. We sat outside in the sunny and luscious garden of eden and basked in the sun. There was a wonderful section of home made counter food but we ordered off the menu. My friend had a root vegetable salad with Halloumi and I had pan fried fresh fish on a seasonAl salad. The relaxed atmosphere is captivating and the service professional, friendly and relaxed. A a chef I thought the quality if ingredients was outstanding and cooked perfectly. Desert was a cookie formnthwir extensive baking. 5 out of 5

Went the other day with friends for lunch and yum!! Food was great, service was spot on and during the summer this place will be the perfect hang out!! Great vibes.

Who would have thought a little beach side cafe in Castle Cliff would be buzzing on a Friday night! Pleasant and quirky interesting surroundings, good service and lovely burgers. A small sellection of craft beer and cider in the fridge. Definitely going back, need try other burgers. Summer could be manic but it looks like they will have a wonderful indoor-outdoor flow thing going on.

Citadel is the first step in the face lift project for the Castle cliff area. It is very popular especially on weekends when there is live music. While it is most famous for its fantastic burgers, Citadel offers excellent salads, side orders, baked goods, great coffee, organic drinks and a selection of craft beers.

The service and food was great however for a $19 burger you would expect to get chips with it.

Love this place! Environment and food always good. And prices are not expensive. Good menu for kids.

What a surprise this place was, relaxed, great coffee and a very friendly atmosphere. The gem of Castlecliff, loved the 60's vibe of the place.

Great place to eat good food, I did order a salad but they had "run out of salad" but the burger was nice .

First time I've not been able to finish a burger, chips and drink combo! The slab cut chips were awesome, huge burger and the staff were lovely.
