Saw Come Together do a Sticky Fingers tribute... Amazing. Beautiful venue, helpful and lovely staff, decent drinks menu, comfy seats!
Z.
Unfortunately, the place does not really hold up when compared to the European opera houses and theatres. From the outside, the house looks like an apartment building.
For some reason, they don't use their stalls.
The staff are nice. Bar selection very poor.
A.
Went there to see Jersey Boys.
Great venue for musicals
Seating a bit cramped as little leg room. Especially if you are on larger side & tall
Recommend seating in lower or dress circle.
Gallery to high up
D.
Great venue - amazing, friendly staff and the best shows in town!
L.
Lovely old world atmosphere, made attending grand daughter's end of year ballet recital feel very special in such beautiful surroundings
H.
Amazing building with spectacular design. Really well worth the visit, it’s nothing like photos, once you see it in real life your just blown away. Amazing view of the harbour bridge and surrounds you just can’t get enough of it. 🤙🤙🔥🔥🔥
S.
Thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was clean and tidy in the toilets. Staff were good. Food on offer was adequate, if a little pricey, but all in all a great place.
A.
Excellent sounds for the Rolling Stones tribute concert! Great atmosphere too.
G.
We went to see "The Jersey Boys" last evening. A Spectacular show. The Opera House was the perfect venue. Seating and lighting great. Sound system was perfect. The whole show and venue were awesome. Staff were pleasant and extremely helpful. Thanks.
J.
A beautiful building & Jersey Boys was a wonderful show.
However venue far too hot!! We were shocked at the lack of handrails, surely that should be basic health & safety.
A.
Have seen a number of shows at the Opera House and I'm a big fan of it.
The acoustics are excellent and the view is always great no matter where you sit.
Would highly recommend seeing the ballet whenever it comes on as the shows are out of this world.
E.
We really enjoyed the Ballet. The special effects in Firefly were spectacular. The dancers in both the performances were impressive. Highly recommend.
B.
Watched J Strauss II's Die Fledermaus here - great show, great venue. Can take a beer or wine from the onsite bar into the show. Student tickets often available at reduced rates.
S.
We got fairly good seats, but I could see that there would've been some that had restricted views. Seats are comfy, although close together, Not horrendous. People could get past you without thinking like you had their bum in your face. Staff are pleasant and helpful.
M.
Went to Jersey Boys on Tuesday 25th May ( my wife's 70th birthday.) Beautiful venue...brilliant show....superb seats & view. Bar service great... helpful staff. Thank you for a memorable night...Don Kennett.
L.
Excellent, classic old world elegance and style. Royal NZ Ballet performance of The Firebird was stunning from start to finish and never lagged.
Only problem is caused by the Wellington City Council and their idiotic plan to progressively eliminate cars and parking. In a city like Wellington taxi cost adds tens of dollars to the cost of going out. Busses? What busses?
E.
Shabby-genteel venue with legendary status and still going strong. She's a great hall for almost anything.
R.
Great show, good acoustics, friendly helpful staff
H.
A grand building thankfully preserved for all to enjoy. The intermission was a traffic nightmare of people but good planning will certainly make sure that you get through this tight squeeze of queuing up.
C.
We were in the Gods, the seat was adequate until the time to stand up came. Well worth it. Just about a sellout by my reckoning. Fantastic show, great to see such a large kiwi component in the show
K.
Jersey Boys. Brilliant show. Great venue. Tasty cider. Yummy ice-cream at half time. Everything you could want and good music to boot.
R.
This once wonderful venue is looking tired and tatty and needs to be refreshed. It's live musical offerings (Jazz and Blues etc ) however remain first class.
G.
sorry to say we both contracted (whooping couch) anyone else got the some?Jersey Boys this afternoon was wonderful. A full 3 hour card. Told a great story from the beginning till now
A.
Was very impressed with the Theatre's character and history and the staff were all helpful and friendly.
Most of all the Show; The Jersey Boys was brilliant 👏👌
C.
Jersey Boys was an awesome experience. Cute Frankie Valli! Great range of nibbles for half time. Lovely old school place to be enjoyed!
M.
A very funky venue! Loved it 😊
S.
Great show (Russell Howard) good views from the dress circle. Only criticism is the seats are rather uncomfortable, but who cares if you're having a good time!
S.
Saw Jersey Boys Had to climb a lot of stairs as we were up the top but the all round view was fantastic Only problem was the toilets or lack of for women Queues were horrendous
J.
Show was amazing but very uncomfortable due to the Heat , I’d say they would have sold a lot of ice cream and drinks in the interval .. air conditioning needed 😊
D.
The Opera House is a good venue as long as you can avoid sitting too close to a pillar. Unfortunately the usual issue of queuing for the w.c.
M.
West Side Story was terrific with marvelous dancing, singing and the scenery was most evocative & clever. Theatre was comfortable but more than one toilet on the entrance floor needs reviewing if possible. Otherwise good.
J.
Still a fantastic place to experience live shows.
O.
Handled lighting at a performance here. Great staff, and a venue that truly makes one feel like they're on Broadway. There are so many lights that do so many things, and so many levels, and it's really a great stage. My biggest issue perhaps is with the amount of structural poles that block the view of the stage to some seats.
R.
A Historic Place. The floors are creaky in the loft and the chairs are in a steep incline to give the audience a good view of the stage. Good sound coming from the stage-I have watched a few shows here and the sound is audible, just right.
C.
Great ambience. In a fabulous theatre. Sadly not enough room to sit down having drinks prior. Also no details as to when the actual show started. So we arrived too early. Loved the show though. Catherine Tate was worth waiting for.!
L.
The place is lovely. Its a bit like you've been transported back in time with the style of the architecture. Would love to see a symphonic orchestra performance here one day. They also serve drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Though I'm not sure if this before every show or only select ones.
H.
Went to see West Side Story (which was amazing but beside the point for this review).
The Opera House is a beautiful venue with a great feel to it. Ornately decorated to make you feel like you've really gone out! Lovely sound, relatively comfortable seats, and well set up with an orchestra pit and large stage.
The only real issue is the antiquated and poorly understood ticket/entry process.
I was told I could use the tickets on my phone to get in, got to my entrance and was told they need to be printed, so down to the box office to get them printed and then back up with two pieces of printed cardboard to thrown away in an couple of hours.
Stupid process since they are just scanning a barcode...
Fix that and the venue would get 5 stars :)
f.
The show was fantastic but the place was soooo hot as we were experiencing a heatwave. They were wonderful offering patrons water if needed and help if becoming overcome by heat. The seats are too tightly packed together and uncomfortable for us larger ladies.
N.
Take yourself back in time and enjoy the show.
S.
Went to see Chicago the musical which by the way was great. The venue is a bit old and hated that the toilets were upstairs. The foyer is small and very crowded. The bar is very limited and therefore lacks any ambience.
G.
Beautiful old building, but I missed a cloakroom. The seats are narrow ànd spending 3 hrs with a coat and bag on your lap takes away from the enjoyment of the performance! The foyer could do with a little TLC as well.
M.
The Opera House is a wonderfully central location and it had a rich history. I do feel slightly unsafe there. I shouldn't like to have to cope with either a fire or an earthquake during a show.
N.
A grand old lady! So beautiful, so much of the original design and architecture and such an amazing experience! A jewel in the Wellington crown, give her a try, you won't be sorry!
K.
Lovely theatre... great show (No such thing as Fish. Sorry if you missed it). Very slow exiting at the end. Glad there wasn't an earthquake! Too few loos for women as always at such venues.
J.
We went to the Jersey boys show which was great, very comfortable seats with a great view.
R.
Actually there to see the magical Gin Wigmore, what a voice. The venue is an old feel 1920s type theater. Well set out to give excellent acoustics across the whole venue. Unfortunate that the small area in front of it is where people seem to congregate for drink and drugs. Not great for tourists but they do not look as if they have elsewhere to go and live and let live is my thinking.
R.
Lovely old building with excellent facilities. The concert we attended was a lot of fun, and I felt like everyone else had a great time as well which made it a great experience. Friendly and helpful staff as well.
d.
Fantastic show, would see it again in a heartbeat.
S.
5 Stars for the show 1Star for lack of conveniences
K.
It was a great place to go to as I went there last weekend to the Jersey Boys stage show.
L.
Had a great time, historical building, nice acoustics, loved the atmosphere
M.
Loved THE MENAGERIE, come on Wgtn Venues, Please keep supporting Indie Producers/Artists
I.
Live rust by nz artists playing Neil Young. Not fantastic but great venue to enjoy the show
M.
She's a grand old lady. I can imagine Her Majesty waving down from up in the box stalls in approval.
C.
Place is good.. just no parking that disappointing
T.
Cool venue .. Jersey Boys was a great show
B.
The ballet was anazing. Theatre was neat and ushers were awesome and friendly. It was just extremely hot in the gallery.
L.
Had a great time, historical building, nice acoustics, loved the atmosphere
J.
Beautiful place, friendly staff.
L.
A beautiful compact theater popular with major shows as well as smaller performances. Great being so small, because everyone gets a seat close to the stage.
A.
You can see many fantastic shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Sister Act and many many more.
R.
Amazing place but the wonderful staff take it to a whole new level.
M.
Great venue. We were in seats that don't have a clear view of stage (pole directly in front of us on lower level S row)
T.
Lovely majestic building but the chairs are hard, by second half it was like sitting in concrete. Also not good leg room, I fitted in but I'm short, if you taller than 5'8" it might be a challenge
M.
Saw jersey boys show here, good comfortable seating and great atmosphere
G.
A grand old girl of an opera house. It's not as fancy at the St James, but it's still a good venue with accessible shows. A wide variety of events happen here, and this solid and reliable venue handles them all very well.
C.
Intimate setting, we were towards the back of the upper circle but could still make out facial expressions. Very warm in summer, water was available and the regular visitors carried fans.
K.
It was a great place to go to as I went there last weekend to the Jersey Boys stage show.
D.
Liked the old style building. But up in the dress circle it was very uncomfortably hot and stuffy. Could not wait for the interval. I asked my husband how he was going. He's an asthmatic and even though he'd taken his medication he was having trouble breathing. I said we didn't have to stay for the 2nd half so left! This was on a cool night watching Chicago. Waste of tickets, waste of hotel accommodation and kennel accommodation for our dogs. Surely something should be done to improve air flow. Maybe airconditoning? Not good enough for a Capital City. Sounds like St James is the same. After living in Sydney for many years and seeing many shows at many venues never has this happened. We have never walked out in the middle of a show. Such a huge disappointment.
T.
Boutique venue and seating and views are great, but too warm in there.
J.
Great setting and acoustic. Poor range of drinks available at the bar. Only RTD was Lemon and Yuzu and nothing else only beer or wine.
B.
Great time attending Peter Pan Goes Wrong in a wonderful old theatre. Facilities are very good and staff excellent. Had a nice glass of red wine from the bar too.
A.
Enjoyed the show. Comfortable seating
A.
First time here. Came to watch the Catherine Tate show which was awesome. The venue itself was functional and easy to navigate. Drinks were expensive but I suppose that is to be expected. Friendly staff
K.
Jersey boys was the best show I have ever seen. Thank you for making our day
C.
Gorgeous old restored theatre with nice acoustics and dramatic stage. Courteous and efficient ushers. Drinks and snacks available.
G.
Lovely in a faded glory kind of way.
Intimate, good views from anywhere and an orchestra pit. Its a keeper !
J.
Just went to watch Stan Walker, loved his concert, and Band of hot Muso's.! A great performer had the audience on our feet.! And singing his songs.!
K.
Cramped, oldskool concert venue that has a charm from the past dropped all over it. The bar at the entrance, Crumpet, is one of the best spots for a cocktail in the city
G.
When booking my seat it appeared that I would have an unobtructured view of the stage. This was not the case. Very disappointing. Would not trust this web site for feature bookings.
However the show was great. 5 stars.
C.
Had a great time at the Opera House
Loved the Jersey Boys.
Would recommend it
M.
Saw Sarah Millican there this week. The temperature inside was almost unbarable for us. Severally people around us were really struggling. I know it's been warm this week but to not have any means to cool the place down was poor.
H.
Want to travel back in time?? Good seating room and great atmosphere
I.
Live rust by nz artists playing Neil Young. Not fantastic but great venue to enjoy the show
S.
Awesome venue - took the kids to see a kids live show and they loved it. Staff took great care of us and were very helpful in showing us to our seats and where the toilets were.
E.
It's a nice venue, but one set of toilets on the top floor? Having to fight through everyone just to get to the loo before the show is pretty annoying.
G.
This venue is a little small but it's very warm and the atmosphere is amazing. I recommend going to an event there (or hosting your own) purely for the architecture and decor.
N.
Historic, well run entertainment centre & refreshments . Love Jersey Boys.
I.
Went to see Joe Lycett, he was great. The venue was let down by poor signage as to how to get to the area you were seated then again being directed to the wrong seats twice
h.
Amazing place to perform and the space has loads of good seating options. However if you are too far to either side part of the stage is blocked.
e.
Went to see “ The Magicians” today, great show, beautiful theatre, make sure you are on time.Row A seats 21&22 right in the middle first floor, great seats worth the $99.00 each.
S.
Waiting for a show, cracking venue, great staff
R.
JERSEY BOY WHAT A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE. I'D GO AGAIN NO PROBLEM..LOVED IT..THANK YOU..GRATEFUL SHARING..🥰😍💕😇
P.
Superb venue. Wish staff would check tickets properly though and save people the embarrassment of sitting in the wrong area by mistake. Done it myself and seen lots of others do it too.
R.
Beautiful venue. Great staff. Be sure to use washroom before theshow because there aren't that many so there will be queues during intermission and afterwards.
D.
Nice architecture, a nice old theatre. Need to do a bit more work on hiding sound/lighting wiring and would be nice to open the box seats
D.
Nice venue sat up in the gods that wasn't so great.
A.
A great venue. Seating can be a little hit and miss in terms of visibility, but wonderful atmosphere and friendly ushers.
B.
It's not as pretty as it used to be. Interior decaying from lack of funding but the beauty of the old decorations still peek through the dust. A good venue for the thoughtful aficionado of entertainment.
C.
Great venue, but limited view if you're on the outside seating, so best to stay at least 4 seats in from the outside.
s.
We saw West Side Story there Wed. night.Great what a show To bad.It was so warm .Hot in the theater everyone was striping down.Someone should pay more attention.
M.
She's a grand old lady. I can imagine Her Majesty waving down from up in the box stalls in approval.
S.
Obviously the Opera House used to be amazing. It's also obvious that it is about 30 years over due for a major renovation. It's still a good venue.
C.
Attended this venue for an awards event, really beautiful character theatre, lovely venue and right in the middle of town.
J.
Love going to the Opera House, we had good seats 5 rows from front
S.
The venue was really nice, but Man, we were sweating in 28 degrees.. Plus! Take a fan with you in summer. Most uncomfortable
R.
Small venue, big feel. Saw a variety show here and loved it. Watch out for poor vision at row edge seats and in the boxes though.
M.
Lovely old and ornate place, ideal for smaller gigs where everyone can be close to the stage.
M.
There is no central aisle. I felt claustrophobic. Wouldn't want to be on there in an earthquake. Fabulous show though
M.
Loved THE MENAGERIE, come on Wgtn Venues, Please keep supporting Indie Producers/Artists
H.
I think is beautiful (even that is very small). While in a show, was a bit weird that coming from toilet I couldn't sit. But, I understood.
J.
As usual a pleasure to be aware of my surroundings as well as listening to superb music. The accoustics are excellent, even under the balcony.
R.
Attended The Veils in concert.
Great venue for a show
A.
Great venue, very grand looking. Sound is always good. Keep an eye out for the resident ghost.
B.
Great old theater in central Wellington with lots of character. Probably in need of a paint job but a great venue nevertheless.
D.
A Wellington icon with an old opera house atmosphere, great for a full house gig. Gets hot with lots of people as air con ventilation struggles.
j.
Wow. Old and classy. Good facilities and great sound. Easy to get to and lots of options for food before or after in that part of town.
d.
Fantastic show, would see it again in a heartbeat.
J.
An old favourite venue that I have been to many times. Never the best for amplified sound but awesome acoustics otherwise.
N.
Osum Billy Bragg gig wid Woody Guthrie stories....Opera house is a great venue, tho I prefer being in stalls 1, instead of upstairs top level 3...
T.
Cool venue .. Jersey Boys was a great show
R.
Show was good. The opera house would benefit from air conditioning though as it was rather warm and a little uncomfortable.
D.
I prefer the lower section for viewing experience and is easier to get to your seat amongst the rush of people trying to get upstairs
J.
The classic opera theatre!! Place for great performances!! The view from the top balcony is just high!!
N.
Stranglers concert. Great venue to feel up close to the act. Nice historic decor too.
L.
Staff where excellent and very helpful
d.
Beautiful architecture. Helpful staff and some intelligent plays. Tickets are quite expensive though
M.
The venue is lovely, the seats are comfortable and it doesn't get too hot anymore, yay
J.
Majestic as always. Charming vintage ambient with the hint of Mozart...
N.
Gallery is very cramped and no aircon makes it very stuffy. However it is still better than TSB Arena
V.
We went to the Ballet at the opera house. Everything lived up to expectations. Definitely worth a visit.
M.
Great little theatre, avoid gallery if you have vertigo!
M.
Agreed, needs renovation. If you're seated on the top balcony area, unless you're in the front row, your view to the stage is blocked by people sitting in front of you.
G.
Was seated at the back and could still easily see the stage
N.
Great view & acoustics even in the gods
V.
Fantastic venue, great view...
D.
Great show. Venue was way to hot as it always is however making the experience uncomfortable at best
J.
Awesome show by Nathan Haynes band viewed from the gallery.....

D.
Lovely venue for an intimate concert or some good stand up comedy!
D.
An absolute bijou of a theatre.
N.
A great venue for a fantastic show
J.
A grand old lady of a building, slightly shabby but reflecting a golden era of theatre going. Handily located in Courtenay Place, it is often time for music, theatre, comedy and more
L.
Love the Opera House, but it needs some money and maintenance. The show we saw was great!
J.
Showing it's age. The seats are a bit tired. But the sound system was great
V.
Stunning theatre.. very limited view of stage in our $100 seats
P.
Saw an amazing show, friendly staff, pity so few toilets
S.
5 Stars for the show 1Star for lack of conveniences
M.
Great place but need to work on the air conditioning as was super hot and aweaty
T.
The seats need replacing with better padded seats and needs a air conditioner installed it gets very hot very fast.
S.
Loved the show! Almost past out from the heat, really not nice.
B.
I loved my front row seat! Close to bus route... suited me totally!
r.
Lovely venue, old but functional
M.
Great venue for great show. West Side Story yay.
J.
Saw John Denver here comfortable, though water bottles sold at intermission are only about 150ml which is pretty bad.
K.
Could do with aircon and suggest lower seats. Its a climb to the top level
A.
Great shows, don't get seats up high... No air flow!!!
J.
Amazing building. Visit Crumpet Cocktail Bar and soak in the atmosphere and great service.
