Reviews of Challenge Arthur's Pass Cafe and Store
c.
Breakfast, lunch menus are available, Pie🥧, coffee☕, snack🍪, Icecream🍦burgar 🍔 as well. I recommend you people to have a scoop icecream it's really big one scoop.
J.
Good spot , thankfully had the deisil I was looking for, though hard to spot the bowsers. Food and coffee Ok and to to it off we were visited by a Kea
R.
Nice selection of food and drinks at a reasonable price. Handy little gift shop as well with a selection of souvenir items. The staff were very friendly too.
P.
Good for food, coffee and friendly service. Enjoy a quick snack or a hearty meal – delicious range of freshly prepared food includes hot or cold food ready to go. Spacious and there are charging points so you acn charge phones and all. ATM is also there. Good place to take break during journey.
D.
Cafe is great, coffee was good. But they charged money for takeaway coffee cup. It was first time I experienced cafe charged money for takeaway cup. Overall good cafe.?
D.
gas pump abit hard to drive up too, Staff at this place are welcoming friendy and attractive. Coffee was nice and the mountain biscuits were awesome
T.
Popped in for a coffee on our trip. Excellent coffee. One of the best we have had. Would highly recommend.
T.
Yet another ‘challenge’ that doesn’t take their own money off vouchers. Surely don’t go by the brand if you don’t accept your own loyalty?
That said, a lovely stop in ‘Arthur’s Pass’ with fuel and food. The fuel is expensive and you need to pay inside first however unsurprising given the location.
The Vegan pie was a very welcome find, the coffee and milk shake were also very good. Overall a good experience.
L.
Had early lunch on way home from coast. Couldn't find fault with the food, all very good.
B.
Arthur's Pass Cafe & Store is basically the only place to fill up on petrol and buy basic food provisions when you are staying in the tiny Arthur's Pass Village. Opening hours 8am to 5pm daily.
Here you will find a basic bakery style cafe with self-serve pies, sandwiches, cakes and a few other ready to eat food orders. You can order standard coffee drinks as well. There is also a food provision section with a few frozen meats, canned vegetables, pasta, pasta sauce, breads, snacks, drinks and other staples that you can cook up in area accommodations which have kitchens.
We found food items on offer sufficient for preparing very basic meals and prices reasonable. Still better to stock up at larger supermarkets before making your way into Arthur's Pass. However, if you find yourself here and in need for something basic, this is the place to go. Just note that they close at 5pm each evening.
Note: For a bit of fun, there seem to often be large Kea parrots that hang out at the shop. They are rather accustomed to visitors and seem to be eager to nip a bit of your sandwich or whatever food you might be holding. Have a look, enjoy seeing these peculiar birds but don't feed them if you can avoid the temptation.
T.
Will always stop to have a pie before heading to the coast. Friendly staff, great food and huge sandflies 😉
H.
Great pies but the coffee is a loss for me. It's not burn but it's to acid. The shot is"nt good to begin with. Some people will enjoy that kinda coffee shot but not for my tummy. I enjoy good coffee since I only have coffee for breaky.
V.
Good food and entertaining bird life, but don't take your eye off your food lol
T.
Hot foods such as pies, wraps, sanwiches, pastried and fruit to select cafeteria style and also a menu to order meals from. Lots of dining space inside and out. If you sit outside look out for the cheeky Kea birds who will try to take your food. They come up very close and are not bothered by people.
T.
Pitty they didn't have hot chips , can't be that hard to turn on a vat, I'll be back soon though.
j.
Great homemade food & very friendly hospitable staff.
K.
Stopped for ice cream, Our first rain 🌧️ on this trip. No KEA'S about
C.
Nice warm place to take a break. Soup was fantastic! The pies as well and the place was fully packed so i’m pretty sure you can’t go wrong here!
J.
Great place to stop off and maybe see a few kea hopping around 😊
S.
Very cramped. Placement of things in the cafe will make it hard for wheelchairs and the like.
They seem to have managed to make their coffee thermonuclear. Once it cooled down 20 minutes later it was actually very good.
P.
Always have to make a stop here. Good food, and restrooms, and friendly
The antics from the keas, are a bonus.
E.
Did not disappoint! Great coffee (even had almond milk). Partner got a pie and sausage roll which was delicious. I had scrambled eggs on toast which was good. Nice clean toilets too!
C.
Bloody Kea stole my delishous brownie !!
S.
Nice food. Good prices. Nice place to stop for lunch.
J.
Great selection of food. Was quite busy
D.
Very friendly staff. Lovely food and beverages
P.
A regular stopping point that always meets expectations. Old school cafe selection of cabinet food with very good pies and good coffee. There are a la carte options but I have never tried them. Often hard to get a table so I grab and go.
b.
Quick service and some spots in the shade to enjoy lunch
L.
We always stop here when travelling through the pass. Good selection of food and drink. Usually busy!
Nice and warm on cold days.
Also sells souvenirs as well as basic groceries.
L.
Stopped for a coffee and bite to eat . The coffee was nice but my pie was quite dry. It was about 5 ISH, so would have been nice to have one not so dry. Staff member was pleasant and friendly.
J.
Food is slipping a bit, custard square tasted stale
z.
good quick meal and drinks for stop at Arthur's pass.
C.
Food was OK. However, the toilets are not being maintained. One toilet flap will not stay up. Whilst hovering above the seat, one has to hold the flap up with one hand and then somehow pull a bit of toilet paper off the roll, with the other hand. However, the whole roll falls onto the floor because the dispenser has no cover. It has, apparently, been like that for a long time. It's hilariously bad.
R.
Normal coffee shop. There is nothing special about it and also nothing that I can fault them. Pretty good place to stop and have a coffee.
H.
Nice cafe for quick coffee and pies 🥧
S.
Friendly counter service and delicious pancakes. Can't speak for any other aspect.
F.
The food was excellent and the sevice was excellent.
E.
Vegan pies were good, soy coffee was expensive, burnt and undrinkable 🤮
E.
Lovely big scones and a pot of tea. Just what I needed after walking for 3.5 hrs. Ice cream was good too 😋
T.
Lovely place to stop for a cuppa & restock on essential foods if you do an RV trip like I did. Spectacular scenery getting there from Christchurch, nestled right in the river running between steep, snow crusted peaks...and the coffee is fantastic.
S.
Chai Latte was disgustingly sweet, would never order again.
Coffee was alright....
Sausage roll is good but on the salty side.
Steak and cheese pie was absolutely delicious, meat juicy and tender, crust nice and crisp.
Overall a decent place as an r&r, decor and atmosphere nice and cosy.
S.
This place makes the best pot pie. In the middle of nowhere, really, I thought they were gonna charge for the sake of being the only spots in hundreds of miles, but their food came out to be excellent. All the pies were warm and flakey with tasty good fillings. Their coffee and tea were flavorful and warm, great for the weather around Arthur's Pass. I would recommend this place to stop if you were going across the southern island of New Zealand.
C.
Delicious date scone and great coffee.
D.
While the building is wheelchair/pram accessible, inside is not very cramped, hard to negotiate with a pram. Food is OK, good range. There is scoop ice creams available here. Staff friendly there is also a mini grocery cupboard (about the size of a walk in pantry) but it has the basic you might need if stuck.
K.
Always a good place to stop for a break when traveling between the ocean coasts...
D.
Great pies and coffee. (Previously 5*)
Although have visited recently and was a little disappointed by the lack of "hospitality" accidentally dropped a takeaway cup of coffee (coffee was too hot) trying to open door. No offer of help provided.
C.
Only came in for a quick bite and a nice hot drink.
Got a toasted panini which was a lot better then it looked, but still an average snack. Also got a hot chocolate, which was amazing, tasted really nice.
Very nice location, would be great to see when it snowed.
R.
Why wouldn't you stop off and support these guys. It is a small Café in the middle of nowhere who were glad of our trade and accommodating of our needs.
J.
Good egg sandwiches and nice (but not terribly hot) flat white coffee. Outdoor seating in the sun (rain) or undercover and also indoor seating. Nice staff, but I've given it a five star because, while we were sitting in the sun drinking our coffee a Kea emerged from the shrubs next to our table, obviously looking for food. It actually climbed onto the table to see if we'd left anything that was of interest. The good thing is that we didn't see anyone feed it, but it did look like it was a regular visitor and I'd return to this cafe as it's obviously a good place for Kea spotting :)
R.
Love stopping at Artists pass. Great ice cream breakfast was a bit blan. Had better cheap bacon and poor looking mushrooms obviously done on a tight budget.
M.
Friendly service, great atmosphere. I recommend taking some time out on your trip with a coffee and a snack
S.
Not a great variety if food. Had the gf muffin which was a bit grainy. This are expensive as you'd expect this far away from civilisation but with the number of people who visit I would have expected more variety in the cabinet. Wobbly Kea next time for us.
#.
Cannot recommend enough. An absolute stunning drive with a lot of memorable sights along the way. Arthur's pass really captures the essence of New Zealand. Definitely make the time to pass through Arthur's pass. You won't regret it.
M.
A good menu and a comfortable setting. The prices are very high as you would expect from a tourist destination. It's a good place to stop for a break while traveling the pass, but you would be better off bringing your own sandwiches if you're trying to save money. You can also get fuel here if you're running low.
A.
Considering this is in the middle of nowhere, it’s not as much as a tourist trap as it could be.
Free wifi (check your receipt for the key)
Pies are hot, varied , reasonably priced and tasty.
Coffee was good, got the kiwi cinnamon or chocolate, choice that i missed in the bigger cities.
Good food range.
Fill up
Here before heading East
W.
I found the range of food and drinks available great and the seating ample. But being 1 of only a couple of places supplying these in Arthur's Pass it made it crowded around the cashier and very slow and unorganised with service. Although we ordered our drinks together I had almost finished mine before my friends arrived. And this only after reminding them. Also with the way it is set up people were inadvertently stepping into the middle of the queue and creating a small amount of angst.
A.
I waited more than 20-25 minutes before serving my hot chocolate, it was very long ! The price of gas is overpriced, but it makes sense given the location. I could see several Kea on the terrace, it was nice.
T.
Nice place to stop for a snack. Pies are good, coffee not bad and the atmosphere/layout is good too.
G.
This is a great place to stop and get coffee. It's also a convenience store. I would definitely recommend stopping by for some snacks for your trip or just to get some food to cook at your accomodation
S.
Nice stop fo strech legs, busy and popular
P.
Ok store & bakery if you need something quickly before your hike in the national park or the long drive through. Prices in the store are obviously higher than elsewhere and so is the petrol.
J.
Tourist trap in a place with little options. The place across the road is a lot more welcoming; I should've gone there.
The Kea's like to steal your food on the deck here. A bit novel, but not good in the long run. We don't want Kea to learn that.
R.
Great place for a break. Clean with good service. Only stopped for a coffee but the food looked ok.
R.
Cup of tea plenty of seats happy
M.
The date scone is awesome chunky pieces and a mouthful. Coffee is good too. Hot space for motorcycles to rest and enjoy the warm sun behind the large windows
S.
This is a good spot for breakfast or lunch or to pick up some last minute supplies in Arthur's Pass. The sandwiches are reasonable and the coffee is pretty good. Although it's very busy, the service is quick and friendly. You do pay over the odds but remember that you are in a remote area and everything has to be transported in.
G.
Nice Café just after Author's Paa where you will be made most welcome. They have a good selection of hot and cold snacks, including pies and at least one glutten free option. The pies are fresh as are the sandwiches and both are reasonably priced. You will find hot and cold drinks including tea, coffee, beer and cider. The cafe is clean and tidy and well worth a visit if you are touring in the area.
N.
Meh used to be good, stopped there yesterday sandwich was dry as (definitely not fresh bread), had well finished our eats before the cup of tea turned up.
If traveling East worth waiting til the Sheffield Pie Shop
G.
Great service and good food
G.
Great Ice-creams. Big as
J.
This is a nice cafe, but very pricey because it is mainly a tourist attraction.
j.
Excellent food and service 😊 probably the best mocha chino I've had ...
A.
Had coffee and a roll OK service could have been better, no keas that day ok
I.
Very nice place to stop for a coffee and a meal. If your lucky the Keas might come and visit.
B.
Waiting for my ride to tun up. Coffee good as well as the food. Cafe was busy. But weirdly when cleaning a table they put the chairs on top of the table even in the middle of the day when heaps of people were coming and going.
P.
Friendly staff and good basic food. Recommend a visit.
D.
Nice little pit stop with plenty of options for food and drinks. Petrol station here is very handy to get you through to the end of the very long journey that is Arthurs pass. Would highly recommend stopping here to see the kia's that hang around the local cafe but Watch out they can be nasty towards your car hahaha
C.
The go to place when visiting Arthur's Pass. Lovely food, great selection and menus. Highly recommend.
m.
Worth stopping just for the view. Foods not bad either.
Y.
Havent seen Keas come by but great pies and decent desserts. NY Pepper my favorite. Also has some clothings and souvenir stuff
C.
Great stop for coffee and early breakfast on the way to the Coast and last stop before hitting the Canterbury Plains at the end of the day. Lovely environment, great choice of foods, and lovely hot drinks.
L.
A super quaint cafe whose pies are awesome. I might not rave about the coffee but I’d definitely come back next time we’re passing through.
R.
Great place to stop and have a coffee even though it's the most expensive coffee in New Zealand
B.
Very busy nice food and coffee would stop there again.
J.
An awesome spot to see Keas ! Also great coffee , one of the only places in the world where you can reliably see these gorgeous parrots ! Just dont feed them and make them sick
M.
Splendid place to stop and stretch ya legs. Dry off from a spot of rain, or prepare for the road ahead ;-) Ok food and prices - it's a shop in the middle of ..., well, nowhere! Some swinging walks if your in want, but with a petrol stop, hey, it's a tourist hangout. Say "hi" to the Kia's, don't laugh to much at them or they'll have their revenge ;-D Brilliant. Stop; eat, enjoy+
K.
Very expensive but the korma pie was yummy. Staff did'nt seem happy to be there. It's a bad day not a bad life :)
M.
Nice cafe, food was okay and was the selection. It was a welcome stop as I was on my motorcycle and it was raining. No issues with entering the shop in my bike gear.
R.
Great bakery - nice coffee, good breakfast menu food, and lunch cabinet food was tasty and well priced.
G.
Friendly staff. Generous ice cream size. Always enjoy stopping here.
I.
A good place to stop for a coffee. Fast efficient service nice but limited food selection. Takeaway liquor, petrol & diesel, some grocery fresh fruit and souvenir items.
W.
Nice place to stop coming back from the Coast. Food was good, as was the coffee.
J.
Breakfast was OK. Cool alpine location and keas were on form. Worth the stop!
J.
Great place for a stop over. Great pies and coffee too.
S.
Fairly basic, with little food selection (pies and sausage rolls, mainly), and very challenging to find a seat or even move around if you happen to be here at the same time as a tour bus.
c.
Lovely little spot we dived into during a drive I a down pour. Great coffee and pastries.
P.
Food was ok,but coffee very bitter. Table was dirty
A.
Their coffee was far better than expected and they seemed to have. A good range of nice food.
C.
A must during trips to the the coast. A good selection of food, however a poor selection of energy drinks relative to a local dairy.
K.
Lovely toastee and chips, nice hot pot of tea. Friendly service and nice atmosphere
J.
Small Cafe with a tourist giftshop. The food was good, but nothing special. Standard tourist products, friendly staff.
Great place to stop by if you're in the area.
A.
Nice coffee and sandwiches. Only sad thing was that the kitchen closed for hot meals at 2pm
w.
Great food, great service! Its definitely worth trying the cod fish batter and chips and it's a good price ❤😊
S.
Pit stop bakery-cafe with some snacks and freeze dried food. Nothing delicious to write home about but comfortable nonetheless. Would've wished for wifi though...
L.
Only had a coffee, its was a nice cafe and it was warm. Outside was overcast and drizzling.
E.
Lovely vibe, good place to chill out during the cold weather
A.
A great place to grab a quick bite or coffee / tea / hot chocolate. Also has small petrol pump attached to eat along with outdoor seating area
D.
Stopped here for lunch, found that the cake i had wasn't fresh and not very pleasant.
J.
Everything is ok. Staff can be rushed off their feet at such a busy place.
M.
Very nice little place for a break from sightseeing.
Friendly service, hot coffee and simple quick food really hit the spot.
C.
Good place to stop, coffee was lovely staff were friendly. Extremely expensive which is expected in a remote place like Arthur's pass
G.
Industrial looking place with friendly staff. Average coffee and my yummy lamb and kumara pie had very soft pastry ... fell apart while trying eat it one handed.
K.
Reasonably-priced cafe food with a great selection of pies. The grocery store portion didn't have eggs, which was surprising, although it had most other basics.
z.
Nice place for adventure forest walk. There are waterfall, historical walk, jungle trails, and forest bridges.
M.
Lovely quiet setting in outskirts of town. Excellent motels so clean and comfortable.
C.
Neat place good food friendly staff very clean restrooms
J.
Nice warm and friendly place. Very big meals but also very expensive. Lovely bar staff.
S.
Coffee was pretty good. So, were the mince pies. A pair of keas tried to get a chunk of our pies.
L.
One of the only places for a coffee and eat something if you are on the area. Basic service, coffee and food are fine.
J.
Nice food, hot tea but cutlery was dirty.
M.
Service and food very good
