Reviews of Chatto Creek Tavern
J. B.
We had a meal a the Chatto Creek Hotel on 18/11/2021. I had the 500 gram pork ribs and can thoroughly recommend them to anyone for quality and quantity. There is a great atmosphere when you walk into the hotel helped by the friendliness of the locals and the hosts. Being a warm Nor' West evening, we decided to sit outside in the garden area and have our meal and enjoyed watching the old donkeys and there were some very tame birds hanging around waiting for the crumbs to fall off the table.
A. K.
Super friendly, great location, there's even a Banksy hanging in the kitchen. Incredible sculptures and right on the cycle trail.
S. R.
Awesome little slice of quirky history. Great spot to stop or stay, so many things to look at, investigate and straight out wonder what they might have been used for…
S. H.
Beautiful outdoor dining setting, main hoki course was disappointing as the second piece of fish was not hoki, the tasty coleslaw salad was overpowered by too much coriander. Service was prompt and prices are very competitive. The children's player area is brilliant plus games and board games are available and stored indoors for the children to collect. The area is very handy to the rail trail and there was a continuous stream of cyclist coming in for meals. The outdoor tables had excellent umbrellas to protect the customers from the hot Central Otago sun.

Delicious food and friendly service. The buttermilk chicken bites are amazing. The new landscaping is amazing and a perfect spot for weekend lunch.

Often stop here for a wee wine whilst travelling to Ophir. Love the outdoor setting. Obliging, friendly staff.

An oasis on the Otago Rail Trail. Friendly, welcoming staff; great selection of quality craft beer. Lovely garden bar with quirky indoor and outdoor decor. Thoroughly recommend!

Such a beautiful place for a cold one and a meal good value A grad in my book it's a always stop in pub
G. S.
Awesome pub! Fully of history and character with a great beer garden. Popular in summer with the rail trail users, but also popular with locals. Menu is great!
C. J.
Situated alongside Otago rail trail and built in1886 this is a charming rustic pub wrapped in history.
The first publican fell on a pitchfork and bled to death and some say his spirit still lingers in the shed.
Inside is the original stonework and beautifully decorated with eclectic charming decor.
On site is the smallest operating post office in NZ.
Cosy, warm with a fire and inviting -the staff are super hospitable.
Adorning the walls are old photos and memorabilia.
Meals are generous portions and you just want to lay back on the leather couch and stay.
Outside are the wonky donkeys very cheeky and new owner has plans ahoof- watch this space.
R. T.
Great food, great service, great atmosphere and summer in the garden bar with platters and friends are going to be awesome 👌
D. A.
Great place to have a few drinks and some food for a break from the rail trail
J. G.
Great place, history, great food and friendly service. Would definately recommend a stop
R. H.
Good coffee. Lovely spot and garden. Friendly service. Shame there were no muffins or scones at 10. Not sure why there needs to be music blaring around pub and garden. Don't people go to these places for the scenery, peace and quiet. I do. Popular place though.
A. R.
You can't beat country service and food!
Went to Chatto Creek Tavern as part of a group celebrating a wedding anniversary for an evening meal.
I had a Ribeye Steak, beer battered chips and salad it was fantastic, the service was friendly and efficient. I would reccomend stopping here on your travels or even make a special trip - you won't be disappointed.

One of the best beef burgers I’ve ever had! Juicy, well cooked and flavoursome. Great beer battered fries. Kids platter went down a treat. Lovely atmosphere for kids and adults alike to enjoy the sunny garden and pat the donkeys!
M. B.
Wonderful good and plenty to eat for a buffet meal as a group.

It's a very popular place with lots of cyclists and passers-by stopping off at this historic tavern. Located right on the Otago Rail Trail, its a welcome stop after a constant incline from Alexandra (17 km). We were there early so pretty much had the place to ourselves to enjoy our bacon butty and coffees.
S. P.
Great meals and tranquil spot wether you come by bike 🚲 or car 🚗
j. h.
Fabulous, friendly service and the food was lovely.

No muffins or scones the day we cycled here.
A missed opportunity for hungry cyclists at morning coffee time.

M. S. L.

All the staff were welcoming, the dinner was excellent and the old stone building provided great ambience.
I left my phone behind and they went to some trouble to find me.
V. B.
Sooo happy to arrive here after our first half day on the rail trail. We felt like we deserved a great beautiful big lunch after some headwind and Chatto Creek did not disappoint! Sat outside under the white cherry tree. It was a busy day but food was worth the little wait. Servings were super generous. Donkeys are adorable
D.
Awesome food with friendly service.

We arranged for our family reunion to be celebrated at the Chatto Creek Tavern
A choice we will never regret. We came from that area many many years ago when the Tavern was a hotel or a pub
Mainly used for the bar. Today it's a well used all round tavern. It's on the cycle trail plus in general a dining establishment a bar also used like we did as an area to celebrate a family gathering. Bar can be closed for your function but we chose to keep it open to passing public/locals etc. We had a wonderful evening
Buffet meal excellent. Staff including the owner Lesley, couldn't have been more helpful/obliging. Everything clean and fresh. To help us we were given permission to shift what we wanted..
The Chatto Creek Tavern made you feel like family.
Out of 100, I would give it 150😉
J. W.
A good place to stop for lunch and a nice cold beer when biking the Otago Rail Trail. Good menu selection and the meals are a hearty size (most of which can be shared by two small eaters). Relaxing outdoor garden seating area.
M. R.

Got a real southerner feel. Have a friendly sheep and chickens as your host. Slept in this 6 bed room. Which had to our own. But a bit expensive $ 60 a person include breakfast. Toast was the really good.
M. J.

Enjoyable little propper country pub staffed by actual New Zealanders instead of back packers. I enjoyed my burger she the chips were great. Only commercial beers on tap. Friendly people. Got a bit of a hairy eyeball from a couple of the locals but that's normal in a little country pub.
k. r.
A perfect stop off on the Otago rail trail . Great ale. Great food. Nice service. Recommend the blue cod fish n chips. Fish was superb.
D. M.
