Wow. Just wow. Burgers were stunning. Milkshakes were even better. The service was superb. The vibe was so cool. The whole experience was just ruthless (in a good way). Definitely coming back and would highly recommend. Top class.

Cannot believe I didn't know this was in Wellington. Food was so good, plus decent cocktail menu. Good for families, couples, singles, friends - nice easy going vibe. We will be back soon!

I don't come here enough. The burger experience can be a good one with the right elements. Drop the fast food speed eating and get into an experiential taste culture. Lots of different flavors are served and it can be over done. Choosing a smaller burger for me is key. Why? Because I'm a messy eater. If you can bite into it while holding the whole burger that's a burger experience. If you have to use a knife and fork your kinda missing out on the whole burger vibe. The bar has a good range of spirits to add to your meal and I'm sure I'll be back for an evening burger and bourbon.

The burgers were great. Got a standard and a double smokey, both were cooked well and tasted great. We also had curly fries and gravy wavy fries which were well season, crispy and a good serving. The only issue we had was the sauces, both the bbq and gravy from the fries had too much vinegar and over powered all flavour. Would still recommend the restaurant.

Highly recommend! The food was everything I wanted it to be - I'm sure I'm not the first to say their 'fat fries' are amongst the best fries in New Zealand! Staff were welcoming and accommodating, with a great vibe in the restaurant. I had a pulled lamb burger with crispy chickpeas, washed down with a one of their good choice of tap beers. A great place to go!

Great food place. These guys make the best burgers I have ever tried. I'm allergic to eggs and gluten and these guys triple checked every thing. Great food amazing service and the time between when I ordered and when it came out was minimal 😄 highly recommend.

Initial thoughts: Modern take on a 1950s American burger joint, very well presented and feels clean compared to other current burger joints. The menu is a obnoxious, its very hard to read, too much going on. Didn't enjoy the vegan salted Caramel rum dirty shake, they went a bit over board with the cinnamon on this one. The burger was very nice, there was a lot going on in it but it the sun dried tomato mixed into the patty really stood out and complimented the flavors inside. The chips were actually some of the best I've had, very rich in flavor and not too oily. Overall it was a good experience, friendly service team, the kitchen crew seemed to all have smiles on there face and the food was well crafted. The atmosphere was excellent also, as the night progressed the lights dimmed which was also nice as it wasn't too bright. Would I recommend this to vegans? Yes, I do. Great work Burger Liquor.

Good vegan options and no extra charge to swap to vegan option which is almost unheard of. The broccoli is AMAZING, I had no idea broccoli could taste so good. The vegan patty is alright, it's a little too walnutty tasting imo. However, I have had much worse at patties 100% vegan places in wellington. I'm excited to return here and try the other burgers!

Went to Burger Liquor as a friend suggested to me and it was delicious. The Punjabi Poutine chips were packed with filling and had a super crunchy outer skin. I tried the Smokey BBQ Burger which had delicious, soft but crunchy buttermilk onion strings - but not too much flavour in regards to the whole burger. Bun was nicely toasted. It was packed up with the onion strings but lacked in all-round flavor. The size of the burger was on the smaller side too. We also tried the Green Latifa slushy and The Doggfather cocktail. Both drinks were superb and added well to the meals. The place was very clean when we went in (as soon as it opened 11:30am on Sunday, so you would expect it to be) and had one or two other groups so if you want to avoid the crowd go in the morning. Staff super friendly and quick with orders. Overall, Burger Liquor gets a 4-star for some delicious meals and tasty drinks.

Best burger I have found in New Zealand! The beef is very tender and not greasy, and the buns are soft and moist. I had a burger with bbq sauce that was really delicious as well. I can almost guarantee that any burger on their menu will be delicious. It wasn’t busy when we went and our food arrived in about 15 minutes. It is a little expensive, but worth it in my opinion. I wish Auckland had this restaurant.

Burgers are really great. We tried one standard and one with pork and both of them are delicious. Also the hard shakes are amazing! It's really a good choice to dine here on Sunday night, especially when we found there were not so many open restaurants nearby.

Great burger and, lots of choices, they even make their own sauces. If you go between 2 and 5pm they have a meal deal with burger fries and drinks too. The only let down is that the fries while well cooked and seasoned are still frozen fries, I think a place like this can do better, hand cut fries are always better. Still recommend the place though.

Very upbeat, gourmet casual burger joint with solidly delicious food. I ordered the Smokey with some Smoked Paprika Makikihi Thick Cuts and both came in a good amount of time - both were very tasty too. Getting down to the picky things, the only things stopping me from giving a 5-star rating are the small things, such as the bun being a little dry and the chips having a little too much seasoning. You could argue these are exactly that; picky things. Overall this place has a fantastic atmosphere, great food and a good range of Vegetarian options too. Would totally come back again!

Finished off the night by sharing a passion fruit sundae and the dough-nuggets. Absolutely beautiful. 100% recommend this place, though I also suggest booking a table because we had to wait around 20 minutes to be seated. Well worth the wait though.

Nice place! Went there at about 3:35 on a Monday and took 10 minutes for the food to come out. The fries are incredible and the chicken burgers were great. Service is fast and staff are very pleasant!

Went to try their special burger during “Wellington On A Plate” month, which was a cornflake fried chicken with slaw and pickle, and it was.. ok... The chicken was moist with a good balance of saltiness and sweet, however it lacked a bit of kick, so I added some of their mango chilli sauce available at the table and it was a lot better.. Overall, I think they use quality ingredients and is tasty, just wish it packed more flavours.

Was travelling to Wellington and was craving for some burgers. Did a quick goolgle search and stumbled across Burger Liquor. Overall the ambience was quite nice (felt like I was back in my college days!). The service was nice as well, but it felt like it took a while to place my order (they werent too busy, but getting their attention was quite tough). The waitress was very nice and did a great job in convincing me to try their 'burger of the day' (btw she reminded me of Luna from Harry Potter!). The burger itself tasted pretty good (my burger was based on a Japanese style burger - cant rmb the name). The fries were good as well, but a bit salty. The portion I would say is a bit small, but for the price of $30ish bucks all in (plus the beer), it was fair. Would recommend others to try with their friends (the atmosphere was quite loud and happening!).

I mean this as a compliment: it's nothing too fancy, just decent food done well, with some interesting options peppered in to try. The kind of place that's perfectly suited to a work lunch with your team.

I really enjoyed the salt vinegar burger and vinegar salt fries. Also ordered the vinegar salt vinegar sauce. Didn't order a drink which in hindsight was a mistake. But what I'm most salty about is the price. 18 bucks for a burger and the chips cost extra? Absolutely savage. However, their collection of odd bric a brac and cook books is quite charming. 3/5, there are better places to go if you're not planning on having beersies too.

Easily some of the best burgers I've had in Wellington. The best thing about Burger Liquor is they are incredibly adaptable when it comes to your order, my girlfriend and I often order two burgers and get them to cut these in two for us. They also allow us to have half a portion of cheese fried and half a portion of curry poutine (having a whole portion of both would be madness!). Milkshakes are gorgeous and the poutine and cheese fries are out of this world. ...you'll be absolutely stuffed afterwards.

Not as good as expected.. Music was a way too loud and boring (rap music). Couldn't have a conversation. Service was nice and quick but waited for the actual burger for half an hour. The actual burger looks awesome but doesn't taste as good. Mine was a bit too cold, tasted too much like vinegar and after a few minutes the bun was completely soaked from the tomato.. The curly fries were kind of a joke, as 90% of them were like normal fries. The BBQ sauce didn't tasted like BBQ sauce. Don't trust the hype. :/

It's great to see that Burger Liquor is carrying the mantle for a long line of iconic restaurants that have been at 129 Willis Street over the years including Casablanca which had its home there some 30 years ago . . . then Armadillo followed by the infamous Crazy Horse steak restaurant run by the Bresolin brothers for 6 years until 2014. After taking the office to BL for a staff lunch I have to say I was very impressed - very fast service, food tasty plus, great range of food and drinks to cater for a variety of tastes and quite reasonably priced. Cocktails a great hit with the team to start the lunch off. Staff all friendly, efficient and laid back. Apart from the tables at the front, BL have a u shaped table/booth at the back for larger groups which we used and thought was great. Now a regular on our list of local restaurants we dine at each week.

Called in for a late bite to eat after Church... Place was really busy (good sign) ... staff promptly made some space to seat us ... order was taken and in no time at all our Burgers were served. They were fantastic, really fresh and very tasty. At first we didn’t think they were very big, but by the time we had finished, we were very satisfied!! Really great atmosphere as well... highly recommend if you like quality burgers. Well priced too - 3 x Burgers, plate of fries & 1 x beer all for $50. Will be back again.

I have eaten here many times in the last couple of years and it has always been a great dining experience. The standard menu has some great burgers and the weekly specials provide great variety if you are a regular. Bottomless filter coffee and chips cooked to perfectly for my preference makes this one of my favorite lunch locations.

The service was quick and responsive. The burger had a great balance of crispy/crunch & juicy/saucy from the onion rings and then the dripping sauces and meat. My stomach just rumbled as I typed that last sentence. The vibe was great, good lighting choices and a great aesthetic.

Burger Liquor is still a local fave of mine however I hadn't been there for a few months. Was disappointed that they changed their buns at some point, the new ones definitely not as good as the old ones but overall was a good experience and the vibes are still awesome. Always a good experience with staff there too they are friendly and efficient. I didn't have one this time around but I will also always recommend the salted caramel milkshake with and without the Rum! Soo delicious.

In my opinion, they offer the city’s best reliable burger. Nothing overall fancy, just perfectly cooked with great buns and interesting variations and sides. The liquor menu is great too, especially if you’re into Old Fashioneds or other boozy cocktails. It’s not often advertised, but their weekday lunch special is fantastic! $15 for a burger and beer from 2 PM, so if you’ve got a flexible lunch schedule get on it! A word of warning: the shakes are immense and not for the faint of heart. Consider enlisting a friend or other trusted adult to help you.

Just happened to pass by this place on the street and decided from one glance at the menu that this was what we wanted. Was not disappointed. Absolutely amazing experience, food was spectacular, great drinks range, beers on tap were superb, and the wait staff were super friendly and helpful. There was a small wait for a table and for the food but what do you expect from somewhere this obviously popular? Not a native to welly but will definitely come back here if we’re here again and will be recommending to all my friends. Fab work guys!

The broccoli starter is just amazing and it has to have one of the best fish burgers I've ever tasted. Have only been a few times and it's already one of my favorite restaurants - would happily trudge from the train station (from hutt valley) to eat here. The service was very good also

Coming from Christchurch places like Burger Liquor are few and far between throughout my experiences. However. This is by far the absolute best burger I’ve ever had! The pricing when compared to other ‘upscale’ burger joints is well in the same bracket. This place is incredibly good! I loved the ambience and aesthetic of Burger Liquor, from the American Diner like seating to the top notch tunes playing throughout. The RATM / Wu Tang gig poster on the wall, is that for sale? Fantastic atmosphere, fantastic service and of course fantastic food! The burger was outstanding, the buttermilk popcorn chicken was incredible and the Oreo and Baileys ‘hard shake’ was also, incredible! The staff are friendly and most importantly the burgers are good. If you don't mind pickles then I highly recommend the Berny Mac. I may be wrong but I don't think I can recall too often when the kitchen experiments with say, a special burger of the week outside the normal menu. Top tip: If you're like me and you like the bbq sauce you can buy it in a bottle from them. There is a good selection of drinking options from spirits, craft beer (as Wellington eateries should) and non alcoholic. The venue is pleasant enough with my only real issue being the sometimes noisy din when it is well patroned. To be expected with the hard floors etc. I've been a fair few times and it's usually always a full house around meal times. I usually don't book ahead and I've been lucky thus far but it may pay to book in advance.

Burger Liquor is a regular venue on our Friday lunch sojourns. The burgers are good. Not huge, but definitely tasty. Occasionally the brioche bun can seem a little dry, but the simple combinations of flavours and sauces still make it a tasty treat. Having smaller burgers also means you can enjoys from the sides (jalapeno poppers are good!) and not come away too stuffed. From the drinks menu, I enjoy the salted caramel shake. Served with deliciously pickled cucumber adding needed acidity to balance the rich, almost earthy, New Zealand beef. Bake their own bread (fairly sure), that went really well with the burger. Firstly, I've got to say... I really don't understand the hype and local fuss made about this place. Like some other reviewers I found the food here very average at best. As burgers are their speciality, I would have expected better than a rather thin slice of burger meat sandwiched between optional ingredients that are seperately priced as extras. The burger was ok but nothing within the realms of expectation as a burger specialist. The hard shakes are supposed to contain ice-cream and be super thick. In reality what I got what was milky mix with a bit of flavour, with no detection of ice-cream mixed in whatsoever, with cream dripping down the sides of the long glass and actually making a mess on the table. In fairness the waitresses (mostly girls) provides the highlight with their super friendly and attentive service. But then when I went to pay $47(!!!) for a simple burger, fries, milkshake and drink only to then be informed I would be charged an extra 2% for using a credit card - that made my mind up for it to be the first and last time I would go there.

My friend was too kind, I on the other hand would not have hesitated to send it back. So if you are after a burger and some liquor, its great. Anything else, nope.

Despite that it can get very busy (especially during WOAP) the wait for a table was max 10 min. Staff are engaging and helpful, plus they have a couple of cuties. Burgers are huge and delicious. Not "standard" burgers by any means. Even the burgers that follow the same flavour profile of a classic, such as a beef/bacon/bbq style, will have premium. ingredients and home made sauces with their own twist to make it unique and delicious. Kudos to whoever designed the menu. Good range of drinks from some cheap specials, great craft selections, to some more intersting cocktails. I had the WOAP snowcone cocktail and loved it; beware though, they are strong! I've been going to burger liquor for at least 4 years now and I think it stands out as a highlight of casual wellington cuisine. I'm sure many Americans have eaten here, but as one myself, I can definitely say that they make a great burger. Seriously, it may be one of best burgers I have ever had (at least in my personal top three,) and I've eaten a lot of burgers back home all over the US. New Zealand obviously takes a lot of pride in their beef, and Burger Liquor only uses New Zealand beef (like many other places here.) The service was incredible and though this is not a fast food place, they do get your food out to you *very* quickly. The decor is kitschy and fun. The menu has witty and pun-filled items like the "Mariah Curry" burger. They play great music...a mix of 1990's and 2000's pop, dance, and lighter hip-hop, with some local New Zealand artists that I had to Google so I could listen to more of later. As their name suggests, they also have a full bar and they have a lot of very creative milkshakes and sundaes (optionally) incorporating their full bar with a separate menu for mixed drinks with a great deal of inventiveness. For our food, we had a Bernie Mac (their version of a Big Mac but much better) and the Smokey (with BBQ sauce, but not standard bottled American style corn syrup based sauce. Think homemade and more like a smokey and slightly sweet aioli. Very good.) We paired it with the Punjabi Poutine, which is french fries (the hand-cut style) with Indian Tikka Masala (butter sauce) and cheese on top. Surprisingly good combination! Though we only had one day in Wellington, we plan on eating there again before we leave. In short, just go there. You'll have a fun time and a great meal.
