We were recommended to come here by a local we met on our travels. It is a hardware and homeware store, where there are classic motorcycles and cars scattered throughout the store. You can see the original "The World's Fastest Indian" bike here. All FREE, although you can always buy something

What a surprise awaits unsuspecting customers. Olde world hardware to top decor pieces. But that is not why we visited ........ this is the home of Burt Munro vehicles and eclectic collection of iconic cars, bikes and machinery. The stands are juxtaposed with goods for sale. We also found a sales assistants with vast knowledge of the displays.

Nothing g short of amazing. The mix of artifacts with retail display takes a bit of getting used to. Comprehensive labels and captions give context to exhibits. Not just Bert Munro pieces....there are lathes, tools, lawn mowers, tool displays.

Like heaven, tools, diy, bikes, cars, history and coffee, what more does one need on a rainy or any other day really.

A really interesting place from hardware too gifts too antique old cars bikes tools and then modern gift shop oh and there is a Cafe in the middle

UN. Believe. Able. I WISH we had something so passionate in our town. To walk amongst an operational Hardware store, and have your attention pricked by The Original Indian, or Burt Munro’s Piston Collection, or a Rotary Motorbike, is just insane. Right next to the taps and washers 😂. There is NO way you can come to Invercargill, and not come here. And it’s free. Stop it! At least grab s drink and a cheese roll from the instore cafe. 10 ⭐️

Best shop ever. Old and New Motorcycles. Harleys, Hondas, Indians and Triumphs. Massive Chainsaw. You'll also see offerings to the gods of speed.

I thought going to what is in fact a local hardware shop would be just like visiting any hardware shop. I was completely wrong. Great place to visit with all the vintage motorcycles and other vehicles there to be viewed. All at no additional cost. The staff were very informative as well. Would visit again and highly recommended.

Awesome if you are into a bit of motorbike history that even has Burt Munro's, Indian on show. Some great old bits of machinery as well. If you are after tools, great hardware shop and nice, friendly staff

What a collection of vintage motorbikes!!! Amazing! A must see for any enthusiast and of course there is the whole Burt Monroe history and 2 of his bikes as well. Really enjoyed it...a sales person (lovely gentleman) spent some time with me and gave me a bit of history lesson - which was fantastic.

Awesome collection of vintage bikes, race cars and gift shop. The workwear section held a great selection of clothing... the young gentleman (Mark)? Had such a huge knowledge bank on the numerous bikes. So interesting.

Friendly and helpful staff. Usually have what Im looking for. Great trade staff who know their work. lovely gift shop to boot. Cafe in here is just O..K for a much needed seat and coffee but if you don't mind a just a few feet up the road I'd scoot to global byte.

Best store ever. Not just because of the cars, motorcycles, the fabulous Bert Munro exhibits No, because this store has an amazing range of tools, hardware and home wares, all displayed with care, humour and even love.

More than just a hardware store! It's a lovely gift shop and home of the E Hayes Motorworks collection. The exhibit to see, is the Burt Munro's 1920 Indian. Worth a visit even if you are not crazy about bikes.

What a fantastic display of motor bikes and classic cars . Could not believe there was no entry charge for this . Suggested a gold coin donation to various local charities .The gift shop was awesome . Definitely making a return visit on our way vack from Stewart Island

Found what I needed from the way things were laid out and labels on the racks. I was buying a socket and an adaptor for a torque wrench. The woman at the counter advised me what the best use was.

Absolutely Amazing place with the Indian Scout that Burt Munro did his land speed record on. And many other cool motorcycles and cars. Also worlds fastest Indian movie props.

If you are interested in Burt Monroe history come here so so cool some of his bikes and lots of his failures and equipment he used to perfect his bikes have been donated here by burt munroe. Lots of quirky gifts for loved ones but for me the highlight was Burts replica vehicles from the actual movie 'the fastest Indian' Worth a look!

This shop is great for gifts or handyman items. Easy to spend an hour in there. We'll worth the visit

Great place to see a bit of history in the shape of motorcycles, some old vehicles, wheelchairs, cash registers and various old tools and all free of charge. A trading Hardware Store while also a great tourist destination. We specifically came to Invercargill to visit this store and my husband was not disappointed. I had noticed the odd change since my first visit in 2012 but overall it was still great! Parking was good too. I was able to park reasonably close, out the back, for free for two hours and there was only one step to negotiate to gain access. Also, there was toilets on site.

Best place to enjoy FREE views of classic motorcycles, and Burt Monroe's worlds fastest indian....great columbus cafe, toilets and general hardware store. Good undercover parking too.

Pleasantly surprised to find an extensive collection of classic bikes including Burt Munroes Indian Scout and The Fastest Indian memorabilia

One of those must visit places great hardware store with a cool museum like collection of cars and bikes.

Such an array of historic memorable auto mobiles and bikes on display. You'll want to bring your camera when you visit here. Very very cool

Odd at first but I guess Mr Hayes bought the bike or inherited it so he has the right to display it but it's great to see Burt Munro's Indian displayed to all for free. This is a hardware store with a motorcycle museum built inside! There are heaps of other motorcycles to see too sprinkled across the store.

This is probably the best shop in New Zealand. It's all there. I'm sure there were other things to see and places to go in Invercargill, but I ran out of time and only saw the inside of this classy place. That good!

The vintage displays are cool and the clearance deals of hardware goods were good

Invercargill is full of treats like this. Amongst all the regular hardware you can see the Burt Munro collection including "The World's fastest Indian" and much, much more. Easily a couple of hours in here and then a very decent coffee next door.

Great offer to walk in and admire a great collection of motorcycles spread throughout the extensive store. The store offers traditional handyman tools and equipment. Camping equipment along with tramping gear. Homeware and giftware. Unusual is the memorabilia items for the Burt Monroe fastest Indian. A Hammer Hardware shop too.

Our second visit and have enjoyed it just as much. There is something for everyone

Got most of what you'd need but its expensive and because of the prices here it isnt my first choice of hardware stores. However they do have a few harder to find things and some of the Hammer Hardware specials arent to bad. It is also good for a look around however.

I have dreamt of seeing the old Indian Spirit of Munro for years now and it did not disappoint

A totally unique experience. Not only does it house the unique,original,legendary Burt Munro 1920 Worlds Fastest Indian but also Burt's (Herbert to be correct) Velocette along with the contents of his shed. Surrounding that exhibit however is around 100 unique motorcycles and motorcars. To visit is free during normal store hours and the shop carries unique range of souvenirs. That is only part of the need to visit. E Hayes & Sons is a fully operational hardware unlike any I have seen those n my world travelling. I would say if Bunnings,Mitre 10,Home Depot etc don't carry it then E Hayes & Sons will. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The range of goods stocked includes not only the hardware range but homeward and New Zealand souvenirs. Just realised I gave them a 5 star that really means it impressed me as I do literally hundreds of reviews and can't recall a 5 before!

This was a nice little surprise that we stumbled upon. The lady at the I-Centre was really helpful when we stopped in. We honestly had no idea what to do in Invercargill but this little museum was pretty cool! To be completely honest it was a tiny bit confusing to find, being a museum incorporated into a fully functioning hardware store? That was odd and threw us off a bit but, I actually really enjoyed that they set it up this way. It added a nice little charm ☺️

The home decor section I could go broke in. The cafe has great coffee and food. The staff will gift wrap your gifts free of charge. An awesome place to shop and to see all the old bikes at the same time. Good if you want to bring out the inner child.

We were recommended to visit by a local And were so surprised by how huge the display was in the store. Motorcycle, chainsaw and other machinery on display was very impressive. Would definitely recommend!

Amazing shop. Has so many aspects to it. Hardware, kitchenware, gift ware, a Cafe and at the mo a Christmas area.

I think this might be the best hardware store in New Zealand! It has a fantastic range of hardware items for sale, more so I think than many of teh big-box stores. My guess is that the people of Invercargill have serious workshops and buy a bit more, bigger, & better tools than the average handy person. And there is of course the fact that this store is also in effect a museum with an cool array of cars and motorbikes on display, including the classic Bert Munro vehciles.

The most unique Hammer Hardware in NZ. Some of the most treasured motorbike and tool memorabilia that you will ever see within the vast family-owned shop. Allow a minimum of 2 hours to walk through. Grab a coffee at Columbus Cafe while you are there.

Absolutely incredible, the store has everything you could need. Its the sort of hardware store we used to have, a store where you can purchase parts to fix an item rather than just replacing it. Then on top of all of that the Burt Munroe stuff blows your mind. I will definitely be back.

All my respect for the owner and the management. This is probably one of the world most wicked exhibition. I love it. Displaying a piece of history in an working hardware store... what a brilliant idea. Gold coin donation is optional, however I'd encourage everyone who visit there to be generous. Well worth it.

You cannot pass through invecargill without a visit to this amazing shop. Memorabilia abounds including the world's fastest Indian and a large number of other motorcycle and cars. Keep looking for the old tools, quirky nuts and bolts plus ➕ +. Take the time and make time to visit it will not disappoint.

It has everything, including owners who are passionate about motorbike racing, engineering and memorabilia. See Burt Munro's original Vincent and, of course, the world's fastest Indian here. Talk to the staff, and get your hardware and rev head needs met.

Best hardware store in NZ and so much more. Worth a visit for all the vintage cars and motor bikes alone. Talking to the staff I got the feeling they really know their stuff. Wish we had something like this where we live. Have to make do with Bunnings and Mitre 10.

Huge retail area, well set up for Burt Munro's week, with bikes brand new and old, to ancient, lot's of people in the shop too.

A hardware shop to have made it into a Lonely Planet guidebook. Friendly staff, good selection of quality items and some old motorcycles including the actual one on which the late Burt Munro broke the world speed record. Highly recommend and I will definitely visit again.

The floorplan of this store gives the customers and staff room to move around displays, not like a lot of other shops that have very skinny aisles, well done management and staff of E. Hayes & Sons. Grand local knowledge. And the displays of vintage and veteran cars and motor cycles is great, the original Burt Munro's world's fastest Indian motorcycle, is an asset to the store.

Even if you aren't sure you don't like motorcycles there is plenty to see here at E. Hayes & Sons. They have motorcycles on display as well as other interesting collections. Take some time to look at the hammer display. It will bring a smile to your face. Of course there is the impressive Bert Munro motorcycles as well.

My own personal experience I have found most of the staff friendly and helpful and my experiences with above fine however I DID have one experience with a staff member who couldn't be bothered was unhelpful, therefore walking out wondering if I wanted to go back.

If you are into tools and beautifully crafted motorbikes, this place will not cease to amaze you. There is also a clothing section with nice merino items, notably cheaper than the iconic brands that can be found in touristic sport shops but nevertheless perfectly effective. Having bundled the shop and museum items is a brilliant idea. Bikers and mechanics fan, be prepared to drool!

This is a hardware and gift shop with a nice surprise inside. There are old motorbikes and cars on display. There is no cost for looking around if you don't need hardware so makes a good hour visit for no cost..

Very helpful, good range of products.

Just purchased some tools from E Hayes in Invercargill. Was quick and painless even during level 3 of COVID-19.I simply called the store gave them a list of what I was after and the staff collected the items and processed the transaction ready to collect.Where there were more than one available product the staff explained the differences and let me decide which product I would like. A very easy way to support local considering the circumstances.

This amazing place is both general hardware and motorcycle museum in one. The range of products is huge as is the collection which sits among the items for sale. Burt Munro motorcycle world's fastest Indian is the if only the race fairing the iconic. All sorts of bits and bobs of a mechanical nature are everywhere. Take at least an hour. It's a Mecca in the week of Burt Munro Race Week.

Modern hardware store with a twist. Has a quality range of everything from crockery to engineering supplies to paint. The twist - home to replica/originals of Burt Munro's motorbikes etc (Worlds Fastest Indian), and other vintage motorbikes/race cars. Very popular destination.

This is just a hardware store, but the owner has a passion for collecting motorbikes, so the there are many on display. It is free to enter and view the bikes (as well as a few cars and other bits and pieces) and the staff are more than happy to help and answer questions. We bought some bits just as a thankyou for allowing people to see these collectables for free. There are quite a few bikes (including the Indian), a few cars and some other bits. I likes the collection of pistons that Burt tried while fine tuning his bikes. Certainly worth a visit.

I’ve been here a few times and I am always completely blown away by all of the very cool stuff they have on display. If you are ever in New Zealand you absolutely must go there, you won’t regret it. You will only regret it if you don’t go.

Always a good business to visit always helpful the staff a real old fashion style about the place

After searching at places like repco and supercheap and finding them lacking choice and being grossly over-priced. E Hayes had a better selection and much more competitively pricing. I often forget how good E Hayes really is.

Fantastic place definitely worth a visit

I visited E. Hayes hardware store during September to viewing the famous Burt Munro's Indian Scout motorbike that STILL holds the World record. My son and I were able to purchase our souvenirs of Burt Munro's life. We were both very pleased with our purchases and the friendly staff. We flew out of Brisbane and landed at Christchurch then the next day we travelled south.

Fantastic choice for gifts, hardware etc and ofcourse you get to see the Fastest Indian bike etc etc

For the motor enthusiastic it is free to visit. The World Fastest Indian motor bike is there plus replicates you can get on for photos. Other original items used in the film can be seen. Also, as an aside, it is New Zealand's greatest hardware store with dedicated knowledge staff. Not to be missed

What can I say. If your close to E Hayes and have never been before then definitely pop in and checking out. It's big and carries a range of products far in excess of any other standard hardware store I've ever seen. From really massive tools to tools I've never seen before. Heaps of misc hardware. And the setting is part museum and part 1920 working hardware store. Love it. Just go in for a look if for no other reason.

Fabulous... We wanted to see Burt Munros 'Red Indian' but found so much more. Very interesting place, something for everyone.

Omg I was told that there were things to look for here. But I didn't know how truly important this place is for the New Zealand culture. This is the home of Burt Munro's real Indian!!!! Wow. And yes it's a general merchandise and hardware store. Wow X 2

A must visit for rev heads and/or history fans. Doubles as a functioning hardware shop and a musueum. Large range of motorcycles and the odd car. Also houses the original fast Indian. If you are after fastest Indian memorial, this the place to buy it. The prices are not bad, though on the higher end. It also contains a gift shop with different knick knacks to fill the hearts content.

This hardware store and Motorcycle display is not to be missed, as good a hardware store as you will find anywhere with the motorcycles on display including Bert Munros original bike's and props from the movie.

Free motor museum spread throughout the hardware store and other associated stores. Excellent array of both historic vehicles, and hardware goods. Definitely a must see for any visitors to invercargill.

I'm not a motorbike enthusiast but the Burt Munroe experience this week has been magic and the displays at Hayes and Sons have endeared me to Burt and motor bikes

Because you can get things you don't always find in Christchurch. I was staying down with my mum on this particular visit & I was after something particular. Why you can't always get what you want in Christchurch is partly due to mother nature, and places moving or going out of business / town.

Wow what a store. Great gifts, clothes and hardware and then there are the bikes and cars and other bits of machinery. At every corner there is something else to look at from old lawnmowers to the acclaimed Indian motorcycle. The engine made from random parts such as pressure cooker and bedpam is amazing. As a tourist, I'm not interested in DIY. But E Hayes & sons deserve huge thanks from the world, for maintaining a fabulous collection of museum pieces from motor a motorcycle history. And if I ever need a double handed hammer, I'll come back and buy one.

I wasn't there to buy anything, but staff was friendly to give some story of Birt Munro and his World's Fastest Indian, if you ever seen the movie, you have to check this place out, if you weren't, then watch it and come here to check it out.

A hardware store is a dangerous place for anyone into DIY. In this place you will get lost in the tools and also the cars and bikes in the store. An unusual combination of cars,bikes and a hardware store. Worthwhile to visit because it's free but also a credit to the Hayes Family for what they have done. You can't go to invercargill without going to see the world's fastest Indian plus a lot of other Burt Munro items. Another rare item there is Burts Velocette speed bike.

The best range in town! And the only thing that beats that, is the knowledge the staff have. I'm yet to have a question go unsolved, or helpful advice not given. Great place to get exactly what you need, or discover all the bits you never knew you needed, and get them anyway.

Been dealing with Hayes and in here with Father since the 50s. Knew and spoke with Mr. Irving H Norman H. And young Neville. Very important part of Ingill and Nz.

Fabulous exhibits throughout the store. My husband was in heaven with all the motorbikes and the Indian exhibits

Most helpful old fashioned hardware store ever. The service guy spent 20mins problem solving our problem and end the end sold us a $7 part that solved it perfect.

I usually avoid Hayes because of their prices, but, I have to acknowledge that Hayes have everything - - - things that other shops don't have, which is sometimes useful in case of a hurry or breakdown. Hayes for me is Motorbikes where I can relive my youth.

All was the best place to find one bolt or nut, where in the world can you do that and look at vintage motor bikes and cars.

Cool Exhibits. Friendly Staff. Very interesting and some humorous signage on some of the classics. A MUST DO in Invercargill and FREE. It's all passion here, and easy for anyone to enjoy.

Goods available at you cannot get anywhere else. Staff well trained and have good knowledge. Only negative is it the shop spread out and things are hard to find

I thought the free French Champagne mid afternoon was very nice along with the complimentary croutons spread with caviar.
