Very nice, tidy we had our own bathroom too, so that was great. The guy forgot to tell us the lift only stops on certain floors goung downwards, after 9pm, no major, except we ended up walking down 9 flights of stairs to get out, cause once you enter the stairwell, the doors back in are all locked. Otherwise it was great. Excellent air conditioning.

A good affordable place to stay in a very central Auckland location, where you don't have to walk far in either direction to find something to see, browse some shops down Queen Street, take a sightseeing ferry from Queens Wharf, admire the yachts at the Wynyard Quarter, or other amenities in the central city.
Situated just off a main intersection half way along central Queen Street and diagonally across from the Civic Theatre, the location alone made it a good stay. A two minute walk across the same street is the Auckland Central Library and an IMAX cinema is right beside the Civic Theatre. Numerous shops line both sides of the long Queen Street, where small metro supermarkets can be found a few blocks away.
The property itself was a little worn around the edges, but the staff there kept all communal areas cleaned and sanitised daily. There was one occasion when the staff had to handle the situation of a guest contracting Covid-19, but they handled the situation quickly and with appropriate safety measures in place. Well done!
Of the floors I saw, the fifth where my room was had an Egyptian mural painted on the hallway walls, and the third floor where the kitchen and laundry both are, had a Kiwiana (New Zealand-themed) mural. Of the kitchen, it was small but functional, where four people would make it crowded. It was closed everyday between 3:30 - 5:00 PM for thorough cleaning and fully closed between 10:30 PM and 6:00 AM.
Due to concerns of Covid-19 (Omicron variant), I didn't feel comfortable sharing the lounge, TV room, or pool table spaces, which are all located at the ground floor (basement really) entrance area. After reception hours any front door access is by security swipe fob, as is access to any floors in the lifts.

Very good location, accessible to public transportation, skybus and restaurants. The building is quite old but felt secured because they are using access keys. I stayed in their private room and it's peaceful and quiet most of the time. The room is tidy but don't trust the old floor carpet, always wear your Jandals. Well organized late check-in process. Very helpful staff members.

Nice staff and reception area, spacious room, but could be cleaner. Overall good experience.

My stay at Choice Backpackers was absolutely perfect! All of the facilities were easy to find, clean and in working order. The rooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable! On top of that, the price is unbeatable!

Value and Cleanliness. Those are really the two most important things in a hostel. And the staff are also really friendly. The location is useful between queen street, the library, museum, and restaurants.

Good for the money we paid that's $15/pp for a night. The location is very central which was a plus. Bathroom drawers were broken but doesn't matter, water was running well in the shower. Didn't use kitchen so can't say much about that. But overall it was good.

Didn't have parking like it said on website.
Very dirty windows,
The morning after tourists were getting drunk and causing a disturbance making me feel uncomfortable.
However it was a great location and prices weren't that bad. The common room was Cozy and they did maintain cleanliness, how often a week. I'm not sure. But nonetheless an adventure, worthy of exploring again.

The bathroom, kitchen and rooms were being regularly cleaned which added to the comfort. It was nice and quiet at night, the beds were really comfortable and the linen provided in good condition. The staff at reception were really helpful with organising us to be able to extend our booking during a busy period and providing a proof of address for the bank appointment. Laundry facilities worked well and free detergent was a plus. Location was perfectly central. Overall a great place to stay for when we first arrived in New Zealand.

The hostel is clean and has a nice cosy feel to itself. The kitchen can get overcrowded and lack some utensils, when I stayed here there was no fork or bowl and only so many cups. Overall, it's still an excellent choice in a perfect location.

Excellent location in CBD.
Staff are helpful and friendly.
I come and go and can store my push bike and bag easily.
Building is old and could do with some repairs however rates are good and room is air conditioned and clean.

I stayed a night in Choice Backpackers a few day ago. My room was damn cold, and asked to staff turning off the air condition, but he said” we can’t turn off the air condition because other travelers may feel hot, and if you want to have more bedclothes, I can give it to you.” The room temperature was under 20 Celsius while staying the room. There was the air condition controller on the ceiling. But it didn’t work properly. Anyway. During the night, I felt the room was like a refrigerator. Expect the damn cold condition in the room, it was good such as good location, nice staff, and clean room.

They had individual rooms with a toilet and a shower on my floor which I liked. It was generally pretty clean and they had free rice, pasta, some spices, and the kitchen was well equipped but small. Even though I was in an 8 bed room, I didn't feel cramped at all. The bathrooms weren't cleaned daily though which I would have liked.

After being here over a week I've had time to re-evaluate some aspects of the hostel. Overall it's a nice place but the walls are so thin that I hear every word of conversation and pillow talk of the couple next door. There are are only 4 burners in the kitchen that work out of 12 burners and the shower on my floor leaks water all over the floor. The stoves haven't worked for so long that everyone agrees that the management "doesn't care". Even after I asked for the burners to be fixed and the electrician paid a visit to the kitchen - still there are only 4 burners for all the guests to crowd around and wait in line for. It's really too bad for everyone - management included.

We had the private double room with shared bathroom. The room and bathroom were clean and well maintained. However, the partitions were really paper thin and you could hear all the other occupants in the same floor throughout the stay.
The reception is open 24/7 which is really helpful. There is a coin operated laundry and shared kitchen for use.

The hostel is okay but I felt a little mislead by its high ratings. The first night I got bitten by so many bed bugs it woke me up. I know bed bugs are a difficult problem for hostels and many have them, but it did affect my experience sadly. The kitchen and dining areas are far too small for a hostel of its size. It would be good to see another kitchen installed on another floor as I had to wait until gone 9pm until there was enough space to cook my dinner. The staff were okay. I was also put in a room with long term guests so it was hard to make friends. Not terrible but I've stayed in much nicer places.

I made a bit of noise in this great establishment, it was amazing staying here and my ukulele bloody loved it thanks a bunch guys 👦

Such great customer service, in particular from the German manager, he went above and beyond with all my expectations for hostel service. Kind and friendly, happy to help with any questions or problems that arose. Would definitely recommend for solo travel or for groups, great for all kinds of bookings.

Thank you so much for staying there, all of the service was extremely very good I will always recommend people to go to stay there thank you again

Easy going. Perfect opportunity to meet a lot of people from different countries. The staff is also nice and funny.
The lobby is a nice spot to chill out.
All in all it's clean and the bathrooms are good. The showers are very nice.
The kitchen is ok, but really small.
The only bad thing is that the hostel had a lot of bed bugs. Also in my room.
All in all, there are maybe better hostels in Auckland. But for this price and this location, you can't find something else. Especially with cool people.
I really appreciate it and that was the reason why I came back after 6 months.

Located just of Queen St with great views and a reasonable price. The hostel is clean and the staff are friendly. Compared to other hostels this one is above average. My only downside was the number of showers on my floor. It does have air conditioning vs opening windows which on a hot day was a plus.

The ambient is the best in this hostel, the cleaning very very good. The kitchen small but so complete! Receptionist so nice. I "lost " my metal cup (amazing quality ) disappear in my room but I think is not for the hostel

The room itself was nice and spacious, yet the walls were quite thin, as you could hear the neighbours at night. The beds were very squeaky when you made the slightest movement, which wasn't always too nice.
Other than the above, it is definitely a decent enough place if you're staying a few nights to catch up on some rest and don't have to be there during the day. The staff are very friendly and helpful on every aspect, so that's a big bonus.
O.
Good for the price. The location is great. Really friendly and helpful reception. They clean the hostel regularly and the toilet/shower are really clean, however, the room got some kind of odour... Like someone haven't shower for days. Also, lots of guest are on working holiday and lived there for few months, so the atmosphere is different to other hostels I stayed. Sometimes in the social room,if you cannot speak either French or Spanish, you cannot find someone to talk to.

I enjoyed staying in the single room on floor8. The place was clean and well maintained for a reasonable price given the location, right in the city. I would recommend friends and family to stay here. The guys on reception were very helpful and well organised. I had no issues staying here. The share accomodation on floor 6 was a bit rough sharing with other travellers but I'll be sure to book into the single rooms again.

The private rooms are great for the price and the toilets and showers are kept fairly clean throughout the day. The team on reception are also helpful and friendly. The dorms, though, do not have lockers and the doors do not locked automatically, so the safety of your belongings can be a bit of a concern (but you can store things behind reception). The main reason for the score is the generally strange vibe you get in this hostel - a lot of people live there or are staying long term, so you can feel a bit out of place if you are staying just for a day or two. Overall, good for long-term stays, not the best for short-term, but the great location is something to think about.
L.
Really good price and excellent location in the city centre. We did request for a quiet room but they put us on the kitchen/lounge floor. We worked at a hostel so know how things can get mixed up so no problem there.
Kitchen facilities were excellent and everything was very clean and smooth.
Would recommend for under one week stays.
Quite a few people living in semi permanently which is a bit odd when you enter a 6 man dorm and there's irons and work clothes everywhere!!
Good movies on in the evening too, nice reception staff :-)
A.
Very clean and really nice accommodation. The staff were very friendly and the location is great. Never used the kitchen as I was only there one night, but the rest of the hostel was updated and clean so I would imagine the kitchen is up to similar standards. Would definitely stay again.
K.
Great hostel for the price. Room walls are very thin like paper. You can hear others talking even in normal speaking volume. With a full set working kitchen to prepare your own meals to save money.

This accommodation was everything I needed, and it's clear why there are a number of long term stayers there. The price is very reasonable and the staff are friendly and helpful.
I would just suggest that an extractor fan be placed in the shower rooms and have ducting/ventilation for rooms in general. Body Odour is always going to be an issue in dormitory-style rooms, and if there could be ventilation to reduce this and perhaps some odour absorber products (tea bags and coal work a treat!) then it would be excellent.

I had stayed two nights at Choice Backpackers and I had found the accomodation really neat and nice. Clean rooms, clean kitchen and bathrooms. I hadn't had enough time for a complete evaluation about the staff, but from a first sight it seemed friendly and helpful.
The only issue I had had to deal with was the lack of enough plugs for each bed. Actually it is a common problem in the most of the hostels I've stayed at. In my opinion each bed should have its own plug.
Anyway, I had enjoyed my time, even though for just two nights.

Friendly staff, good facilities, and felt safe. However, the street noise was terrible- fights, cop cars, bins being emptied. Not their fault at all but FYI.

I came to choice backpackers after spending three weeks in Fiji. I had just spent the previous 4 days in hospital and on antibiotics for a foot infection. My foot was healed, however it still was quite painful. I needed a place to comfortably rest and recover for two days before my flight home in Monday. Immediately I was greeted by a friendly staff behind the desk, who was very helpful. The price is as good as it gets in downtown Auckland and the amenities provide. I spent most of my time in the social lobby. Couches and tables were always filled with guests chatting, reading or simply managing social media. A great wifi connection and universal phone charger, allowed me to take care of all my travel plans and communicate with friends and family back home. They also have a movie room tucked away with a large screen, connected with Netflix and amazon prime. I spent many hours in here as it was the perfect place to alleviate pressure from my foot. They also allow alcohol in the lobby and provide a fridge to store whatever beverages you may have. On Saturday night the lobby was filled with guests who were interested in blowing off steam after a long week of travel and adventure. Though I did not partake, I also was not disturbed by them as the noise is contained in the lobby. I stayed in the 12 bed dorm. The beds were a good size and the room a good temperature. I had enough space to put my bags and it didn’t smell bad. They have plenty of bathrooms and the water pressure can handle the aftermath from all cuisine found in the city. The kitchen was sufficient, lots of dish ware and cutlery and a good selection of complimentary items.

Good hostel with clean nice showers and toilets. Plenty of fridge storage and free WiFi. I stayed in a 6 bed dorm for 3 nights with long term stayers, so they had a lot of stuff everywhere and room was small but was decent for 3 nights. Pretty quiet at night so got a good sleep.

In an objective way I could say there is always better place to go but also worse place too.
Choice backpackers is one of or maybe the cheapest hostel that you can find in town.
Easy to get around to. Bus stop pretty much outside the hostel. Skybus is approximately 300 meter away from the hostel .
I have seen this place improving a lot over my stay there.
+ You can chill out in the lobby play pool table, Foosball, read on the sofa or just tchatting with people around.
+ Free Wi-Fi
+ Netflix, amazon premium are available in the TV room.
+ possibility to change you linen everyday as long as you bring it down between 5am and 11am if I am right.
+ Bathrooms and toilets as far as I am aware are cleaned twice a day. ( when people complain that it's dirty I probably wouldn't blame the hostel as they try their best to keep it clean but a minority of people who can not clean after themselves but as we say common sense is not common for everybody ..).
+ rooms are cleaned every day .
+ Personally I've never ever experienced any problem with bedbugs...
-- The down point for me would be the kitchen. It's too small even tho they have a dining area now. It's difficult to cook when "hundred" People are trying to cook at the same time.
-- Two washing machines and dryers are maybe not enough.
Overall, I have never had any issues and if I had one the staff is always more than happy to help you out .
I have plenty of good memories and I have met so many nice people.
I am not giving 5 stars because improvement is the key and result matters... x

Some smelly floors, no ventilation in the rooms, all a bit run-down. The 9th floor was the nicest. Kitchen gets overcrowded. A lot of Latin American people so not where you want to go if you want to improve your Spanish. Nice parties downstairs on Friday and Saturday nights. The WiFi isn't free, 1$ an hr, 5$ a day and 25$ a week. Bed linen and bathrooms were clean, lots of hot water. It's got a nice friendly vibe, and I would stay there again. But they need to do some maintenance.

A fine hostel for the price, but it could really use some cleaning.
We stayed there 4 nights in beginning of february 2016. Had a double-bed room for 70 $ pr night. In the room was nothing but a bed and a little desk. The walls were paper-thin so we could hear EVERYTHING. The showers were fine, exept when you looked up at the ceiling, and saw the black/brown spots.
The kitchen was not clean, but it was fine to use to heat your food. One morning we saw a bug in there.
The good part is the friendly and helpful staff and the nice atmosphere
K.
Clean sheets, towels, toilets ok. But the room was a bit worn out. I didn't want to walk on the carpet wit bare feet. Very noisy. Walls are paperthin. But cheap. Guess you cannot expect the Hilton then

Just a typical C grade accommodation if you need a place to stay temporarily for a good cost. Small kitchen but this place kinda covers your basic needs to survive. Good way to socialize with other people from different parts of the world too. If you are seeking "perfection" please go somewhere else. But other than that I'm living here now and it's great. Excellent location right in the ❤ of the city and accessibility to nearby amenities e.g public transport, shops, supermarkets, gym etc
