Reviews of The Shakespeare Hotel I Restaurant & Bar I Pub I Micro Brewery
C.
I was gifted a brewery tour and I would highly recommend it. Shakespeare inn is NZ's oldest micro brewery and it preserves invaluable brewing and architectural history. We had a wonderful tour guide who was not only extremely knowledgeable but also very personable and welcoming. A great experience all round!
A.
I was moving on from my job in Auckland city centre and booked the Shakespeare Tavern as the venue for my leaving drinks. Great choice and I recommend it unreservedly. The team was extremely helpful from start to finish. I reserved the first floor space (which also has its own private bar) and they were able to make sure that someone was upstairs to work this bar. Lots of tasty beers, good selection of food and a great atmosphere at the event. Easily located in Albert Street. Recommended.
H.
In love with the place and the ribs and the beer and everything else haha, for sure will be back! Thank you for a great service and really good food that reminds me home
D.
Haven't been here in a while, but had the opportunity to catch up with someone for lunch and really enjoyed it. $19.50 for a cheese burger and fries with a house tap beer ticked all the boxes. We arrived early, but the place seemed to attract a crowd over lunch which was good to see. Must do it again!
B.
Lovely experience. We did the brewery tour and it was fascinating and delicious.
M.
Friendly staff, nice meals and it has its own brewery and reasonable prices. It s in the heart of CBD, clean and tidy and also, free pool and darts. So, we will come back.
J.
Really friendly staff and great service. Excellent beer. The food was delicious. The pub has an awesome atmosphere. The rooms are what you would expect in an old hotel (small and dated) and the noise from local nightlife goes on until 5am...BUT if you are wanting a night out in town, other pubs and sites within walking distance, and are not wanting to spend much time in the hotel room, this place is perfect. We had a fantastic date night and would stay again.
M.
Myself and seven of my work mates just had the $15 lunch here. The service, food and atmosphere was really good and we would certainly be back. The only thing for me though is I am not good at sitting on high chairs and it was a bit cold inside.
D.
The food was presentable. A little over kill on the dried herb on the chicken. However the service is good and a great place for a bite. However have to rate down cause we had came for the buffet. Just to make it all the way there to be told they are not opening or it might have made it a 4 star
L.
We absolutely loved this bar! Really cool decor in a beautiful old building. Being jetlagged we arrived at 11 for an early lunch. We had the pub all to ourselves, the staff was super friendly and quick. The menu is your typical pub food, the fish and chips we're excellent. They had a small selection of draft beer the Belgian wit had a nice light flavor.
S.
Had the open faced chicken sandwich and it was delicious, the green tomatoe chutney was perfect and the handle of Shockley lager finished it off nicely
B.
I've supported Shakespeare over the years due to the business impact of the tunnel construction. The food has been good in the past but, today, the Fish & Chips was - I hate to say it - below par. It literally had no taste at all. Service was good, though. Hopefully, this review will prompt them to lift their game on the food front but, otherwise, please continue to support this establishment.
D.
Right at the heart of the city, this is a pretty historic building. I give it 5 stars for location, 1 star for comfort (so much noise and the room is tiny), 2 stars for efficiency in checking in and checking out.
If you are a party person who won’t mind the late nights, highly recommended but if you need a restful night, not this hotel.
T.
Very friendly and accommodating. Great service! I hope the construction companies are compensating this place because they have really messed the surroundings up. Really nice building and vibe! Good spot for a pint.
E.
We didn't stay but we went to the restaurant this weekend and it was absolutely amazing, from the general aura of the place to the super friendly staff, great music and amazing food there was nothing negative about it, we had an amazing server named Cat or Kat... Idk but either way she was so lovely and made the whole experience amazing as she was accomadating and friendly from start to finish even when dealing with a very busy restaurant. Thank you very much Shakespeare Reasturant staff and especially the talented cooks and our amazing server.
H.
Stopped by on a Saturday and ordered the house brew, calamari and cheeseburger. The service was fast, friendly and the food was incredible. Chef Michael came to our table to ensure everything was cooked to our liking and gave us local insight on sites to see! The best calamari I have ever had! Highly recommend!
A.
There are good qualities and not so good qualities to this place.
On the one hand it is very unique, central to Aucklands CBD and the pub downstairs is nice.
On the other, the rooms are not great. They feel more like an old flat, basic and I wouldn’t describe them as particular clean. The street noise is also very noticeable made worse by the fact the only way to cool the rooms down is by opening the windows.
“If” you are in town for a weekend party that will have you coming back in the early hours of the morning it’s all good. However, if you are planning to spend a bit of time at the accomodation and want an early night I would personally look elsewhere.
Y.
Warm and welcoming staff, great well cared for building with a lot of history.
Staff were fantastic and accommodating. Food was great. Well prepared and presented. Thank you!
L.
Service was excellent. The sweet and sour pork was beautiful!!!! Definitely be coming back again. Just hopefully next time there will be abit more options...but other then that good food for what we paid for.
H.
Very good food for a pub. Nice they brew their own beer on site as well. IPA didn't disappoint.
A.
Really loved it - food was average for pub meals and was worth it. Provide some blankets for the cold foreigners which was great! Awesome cocktails and beers - would go again and if I lived there, it would be my local! Atmosphere was excellent and one of our drinks was incorrectly made, and they straightly fixed it, no issues and were apologetic - great staff! They were quite busy but were still so polite! Would recommend it for a quiet meal in Auckland.
C.
The staff were very friendly and helpful here, storing our bags all day after we checked out and very apologetic when we went up to our room to find it not yet cleaned.
The location is good for proximity to Auckland attractions, though they're unfortunately very affected by construction noise across the street (similar to many hotels). Unfortunately having the windows closed to lessen noise makes the room very stuffy and there's no AC, only a fan that is frustratingly weak.
My biggest issue was how small this room was. Perhaps normal in Auckland, but we couldn't even open our suitcases on the ground. A seal was broken off the shower and cracked radiator were aesthetically unappealing, but still seemed to work. Overall a decent option if your budget is tight, but personally wasn't enough for my needs.
G.
I feel conflicted on rating something that is a classic brewpub, restaurant, AND a hotel, but in this case, my rating is purely based on dining at the bar. Very friendly, welcoming staff and was cool to see/smell them making a microbrew in the back despite none of it being available on tap today which was a teasing shame. Happy hour $5 was good in that it offset how high the food prices felt to me when I was hoping for more pub food like fish and chips less than $15, not $25. Instead, went with chicken tenders w a great honey mustard sauce plus home wedges w gravy. Chicken was good but felt a little over crisp, where as wedges tasted under cooked. The gravy only helped a little to add flavour unfortunately. Lastly, the seating has seen some better days, but still comfy enough (a few tables missing stools tho?). Overall, while average for a pub, it was just that to me personally.
J.
We had one night in Auckland after campervanning for two weeks, and I am so glad we chose to lodge here. The staff was so friendly and accommodating, from check-in to late the next day, when they stored our baggage for us so we could explore the city. They also kindly arranged a flat-rate service to the airport. The room was clean and comfortable. We had wonderful service at the bar and great local advice, always with a smile. My only regret is not having the chance to try a meal. Our sincerest thanks, Shakespeare hotel!
O.
The bar downstairs was bright and quite clean, nice beer, reasonable prices. Seating was okay, television was showing cricket. There was also rather loud and unrelated background music playing through loudspeakers. Menu looked okay, but we did not eat on this occasion as it was only mid afternoon and we had already lunched. There were rather too many flies buzzing around for my liking. Toilets were just about acceptable, but toilet walls and woodwork could be cleaner, especially in respect of the cobwebs (or perhaps they are a feature). In sum: an okay place in a rather nice building. I intend to visit the upstairs restaurant, one day in the not too distant future.
O.
Loved the place and fits right in the heart of the City. The service was perfect and staff was very friendly. I would definitely recommend you guys to visit here. Loved the ambiance and food and beer.
R.
Went to the buffet dinner yesterday. Very friendly and polite manager. Food isn't top notch to be honest. Definitely worth the grabone voucher we purchased though. Would highly recommended
N.
We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights. The room was small but had everything we needed. Clean linen and fresh towels every day. Coffee station was refilled. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the restaurant food was good. It is centrally located and although there are road works you can work around it. Parking was near by in a Wilson parkade, not onsite.
J.
Caution very hot room! Otherwise very cute, small and coosey.
Between 26 and 30degrees all day and night. You could feel the heat as you went closer to the top floors dramatically.
4 flights of stairs with amazing art work. Shower was epic.
We stayed in the top room 12, awesome views but also noisey. Joined onto the cooking area and had fans and heat and smells from the cooking. Massive construction going on next door, cranes and noise all night non stop. 10 percent discount off bar and restraunt but didnt go. We would stay again if it had aircon.
B.
Came by for after works drinks and it was quite nice. Although a bit small it was decorated nicely and nice options for food and drink. The bar was on the ground floor and they had a restaurant up the stairs.
It didn't get too busy but it looked like the staff were shuttling between the bar and restaurant to get food. The food was nice. The garlic and cheese break was ok but the macaroni cheese bites and shrimp hush puppies were good.
The place is currently covered by fencing due to road/train works so might be more difficult than normal to get here.
S.
The larger brewed on site was great, had a pizza and some chips that were pretty average but edible the atmosphere was reasonable although they did not seem to have enough staff on so people did have to wait.
M.
Very adequate room for the price. The room was small with a private bath. Linens were clean and modern. Exactly what I needed after a long day of traveling. Location is prime, middle of CBD, close to train and viaduct. Service (via the tavern downstairs - they do it all) was extremely friendly, cool, and helpful.
J.
Fantastic location in Auckland. Short walk to the ferries, parks, and museums. Great service and the food and house-brewed beer is really great. Rooms are a bit small and the decor is a little dated but I found it charming and fun. I would definitely recommend Shakespeare to a friend.
V.
Friendly staff, good brews and food. Very central location. No lift so quite a few stairs if you are staying but staff did help with suitcases. Bedding spotless and room clean. Good wifi. Discounts in the bar for hotel guests. Mini fridge in room with tea and coffee making. TV
C.
Food tastes great and the beer tastes better. Only disappointed part is that the kitchen closed at 9pm on a Friday night and couldn't order more food and or dessert which was a shame. Their Shakespeare beer however no matter which you choose is always going to be a great selection.
P.
Wonderful environment and location. The staff and bartenders were really friendly. The beer is great too! The rooms are spacious enough, with the beds being really cozy. Overall a great place to stay.
L.
We stopped in for drinks and a burger at the downstairs bar and unfortunately the experience wasn't as good as previous times we'd visited the upstairs restaurant. Though the barman was friendly the chips and burger were pretty mediocre. The chips were warm rather than hot and the cheese burger had an untoasted bun and tasted overwhemingly of relish. They were also playing some rather maudalin music which was a bit of a downer on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon.
D.
Cheers team at Shakespeare's, we were only there for one night but the greeting was really friendly and we had an awesome stay. Props to the General manager was super friendly and had good banter. The only criticism is no THREE WISE BIRDS CIDER! But that's lions fault not theres!!
P.
We didn't stay at the hotel but we had an awesome time at the pub! The bartrnder Anu was very friendly and accommodating so we ended up staying there until closing time at 3am. The brewed beers were good! The chicken nuggets and fries were a perfect accompaniment to our brewed the Shakespeare bastard beer! 👍 while most of the resto bars in Auckland closes early this one is open till like 3am! We all had a nice time and will definitely be going back!
F.
Happened past this beautiful old pub in the middle of Auckland a couple of nights ago and discovered the microbrewery within. A classic hotel with some fantastic beers that's open very late. I recommend you drop by and if it's not too busy, ask for a tour of the brewery.
K.
I stayed here recently and would like to touch on some issues in the reviews ...
Yes, you check in at the bar ..... it makes absolutely no difference to your stay here. If it does - then Ibis Budget or some grotty backpackers is just down the road, for your formal pleasure.
I was on the first floor, above the restaurant and my room was clean! ... The bathroom was spotless, the room was tidy and the bedding was clean, crisp and warm - and absolutely NO bugs whatsoever.
Wifi was readily available, worked really well, was unlimited and free! Where else are you going to get that in Auckland.
Nope, no lift. Dont expect one. Its an old building, obviously heritage listed. Deal with it.
Didnt have too much contact with the staff except for checking in and when checking out - but on the whole, the male and female that I spoke to were polite and friendly.
Yep, they brew their own beer. You get to try some when you check in - try the lighter of the two ... its really really good!
The location was perfectly ideal to all our touristy needs, and for the right price. We had a unique establishment, a comfortable bed, our belongings were safe. I couldnt have asked for more.
The only negative was that they were doing roadworks during the night, but that was sporadic since Cyclone Cook was hovering over us.
We were a little disappointed that some of the pictures did seem a little glossed. I think we were expecting something that we didnt get.
I think *SOME* reviewers should have their medication checked before being allowed near multi media devices or civilisation.
T.
Food had potential and was cheap! Order was however screwed up and took 50minutes. Steak came out pretty blue to be honest, asked for medium rare. I imagine in the rush to get the order out it was just rushed. I'm pretty sure I just caught the crew on a bad day as it wasn't busy I would give it another go, I imagine your experience would be better.
A.
Wasn't at the hotel but the restaurant. Monday is rib night und they are freakin awesome. For 18$ you get 2 really fine ribs and great tasting fries. Besides the waitress is cute :D
K.
A hotel with a brewery! Small, clean room. Fine beds. Very friendly personel. Hotel is situated nearby the Sky Tower and harbour and many places to eat and drink. You must try the beer from the brewery when you are in town
K.
Popped in for a quick beer on my way home.
Bought the lunch time fish and chips with a beer for $20
Very good value, friendly staff and good bar
B.
We went for family dinner and enjoyed everything about the Shakespeare Hotel & Brewery. I loved my Shakespeare Beer we enjoyed our burgers I enjoyed mine Shakepeare Burger and we also enjoyed our Shakepeare Sundae including hot warm Brownie with Vanilla ice cream... wow fantastic sunday night dinner.
B.
Warm, friendly service. Really make the effort to make customers feel welcome. Food was delicious. Great atmosphere, highly recommended :-)
C.
The hotel was nice and all staff was very helpful, unfortunately while we were there the hot water wasn't working. The staff offered us dinner and drinks from the restaurant and bar for free to make up for it. Overall it was a nice hotel with good service, 5 stars if we had hot water.
R.
Bloody Smashed the ribs. The sauce was a tangy, smoaky & bbq balance of perfection. Meat melting in ur mouth & not in your hands 👌 perfectly textured meaty goodless, not off puttingly dripping with fat or sinue.
The chicken n pineapple burger was well balanced with hot fluffy chips on the side.
Accommodation is clean & functional, as reviewed by others dont expect 1000ct sheets. However the 120 year old rooms have so much charicter with odd roof lines and room 8 has a little egress window that takes u onto a private roof top balcony, capturing the arvo sun wonderfull.
C.
It's a room above a pub... and a busy pub with great food. Yes the rooms are small and the stairs are a killer but the staff do pretty much all they can possibly do to make you feel welcome. Great stay - thank you!
T.
Great place for a meal. Had an excellent steak dinner for super cheap (was the special for the evening). Drink prices were reasonable. Beautiful decor. Prompt service.
N.
Great atmosphere. Good food. Tasty bear. Room cleaning to be improved
L.
Great atmosphere, good reasonably priced meals, excellent happy hour prices for drinks. Friendly staff.
L.
We stayed 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The staff were extremely helpful especially Jack who went out of his way to make sure we were well looked after. Thanks
T.
Great food, great beer, good prices for the city.
C.
Great beer but the food is not so great. Also long time waiting to order. They need more staff at the bar especially on quizzes night.
M.
Great burgers! Awesome restrauant with great balcony! Pub downstairs in cool too. Friendly, helpful staff. Aucklands oldest microbrew pub!
S.
Just had a great meal here. Good food. Great friendly service. Good value for money. A pleasant atmosphere with a wide mix of clientele.
S.
Unique place....old brewery with some fantastic, ICE COLD beer. A little pricey, but the atmosphere alone was worth it. And I didn't stay the night...but what other hotels do you check in at the bar?
R.
I went there for drinks with my friends had a few drinks on happy hour and later offered for a few drinks and accepted but never informed about us
Happy hour is finished when I went to paid my Bill they gave me surprised with the bill that's was not the genuine hospitality anyway service were nice it's never happened me before since I'm joined there since three years Shakespeare please advised to the customers before you sold your products I am happy to know about your service and products cheers.....
D.
Pub rating. (I didn’t stay in the hotel) I’ve had the fish burger and the Shakespeare burger. Both are excellent and served up by a super friendly staff.
R.
Staff really friendly , enjoyed the food.
Accomodation wasn't the best
b.
Good hotel stay for the price. Great location. It is a bit loud with the windows open at night. The bed is comfortable and the room was pretty clean.
W.

H.
Delicious Thai salad. With friendly helpful service. A good night. Thank you
M.
Excellent to see the Shakespeare still standing, spick and span after all these years, despite the demolitionof our old workplace (NZ Herald) across the road.
S.
Small rooms, but great atmosphere. Location was close to all major attractions. The restaurant and bar on site was another plus. Great food for a great price.
Z.
great atmosphere, excellent food and lovely friendly staff... what an excellent lunch option
A.
Typical pub-cheap steak, TV playing sport channel, beer on tap. They brew their own beer, and it's good beer.Steak is nothing special, but cost only 10 $.Good place for few drinks.
L.
Great atmosphere and service. Nice selection of tap beer. Perfect place for a social game of pool.
H.
Stopped in for a drink, this place was awesome- bar tender was funny, nrl was on the tv, drinks were good and not expensive, good ambience, and the food, although we didn't eat there, smelt so delicious!!
D.
Great locally brewed beer. A pub/bar atmosphere. A pleasant place for a couple of pints and to watch sport!
K.
In house craft beer was nice, however service was very erratic. For the prices the food was good, but not great.
J.
Lovely bar with wide range of beers. Highly recommended for a lunch!
S.
Good choices of drinks, food and wonderful crew.. No idea why the crowds were light on a Friday night though
G.
They brew on site and have several beers on tap. The pale was good and fruity, but the place itself is anonymous
C.
Brews own beer (right behind the bar!) though the current brew was a bit flat. Food was OK.
C.
Beer OK and standard prices. Best to go at lunch when lunch prices are lower. Like the atmosphere and upstairs restaurant with patio.
O.
Good place. Simple but still a good place to spend some time and enjoy their own beer.

(Translated) We only did the pub, the staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was nice. The dish of the day is rather economical and the decor is fantastic. Make their own beer.
