The Grapevine was an excellent place to base myself at as i begun my working holiday in NZ. I have many great memories of the friends I made there, the meals we cooked, the social activities, the "kitchen raves" and all the laughter that we shared
It is unfortunate the hostel is now permanently closed to backpackers (the management has since changed hands and the property now only accommodates RSE workers). But the place was great for what it was: a home away from home

After over two months I had to say goodbye to the grapevine today. I honestly loved living here. The house is in a beautiful place and filled with even more beautiful people. Leaving today felt like leaving home. I had an overall great experience here. The house itself is cozy and beautiful right on the river and has a very communal vibe.
The manager Elise was absolutely brilliant and went above and beyond to help me out when I arrived, having already organized work and transport before I even got to the Grape Vine. On top of that she was just generally super lovely, accommodating, and always checking in with everyone and organizing events for the house. She genuinely cares about the experience of everyone who stays here and it shows. Her and Seth do such an amazing job and my stay has been nothing short of spectacular. The Grapevine will always have a special place in my heart and I miss it already !!! <3

The Grapevine backpackers is the first hostel I can easily call home. I've spent about 6 months there, and could not have dreamt of a better place to stay. From the beautiful garden next to the river, the free kayaks and the amazing team running the place, I absolutely loved my time there. The manager helped me find work when I needed it. Not having to struggle to find work is a huge plus.
I've met some amazing people there and would recommend this place to anyone looking for short or long term stay in blenheim!

Attention please to all backpackers in New Zealand's lovely Blenheim. Grapevine is the one of the best backpackers accommodations that you can experience what backpackers life is like. I stayed there more than 3 months, met amazing people, had lots of memories, had lots of fun whenever I wanted to do . There are always people around to hang out with, playing pool, go kayaking, cooking meals and sharing or just to have a chat with. After a while living there, i am pretty sure you feel belong to Grapevine. Best manager of all times Ellise, and other staff are always there to help you whenever/whatever you need. Perfect location as 10 mins walk to the town 5 mins walk to supermarket. Experience Grapevine for a night or for a life time. You will not regret it !

The grapevine is an awesome place to stay. I planned on staying for 4 weeks and ended up staying 3 months, because I didn't want to leave. The community in the hostel is great and I made some really good friends. I always enjoyed the group dinners, kayaking on the river and days on the beach. Harleigh the manager always made it easy for me to find a job as well. I would recommend staying there to everyone!

I can say that The Grapevine has been my home in Newzealand.
At first I thought to stay there for a month but I end up staying for half a year.
All the people who stay in The Grapevine are so nice and friendly. Ellise and Seth always try to find a job for us and take care of everything. They can provide you with a great opportunity to find a job that suits you. They keep the rooms, bathrooms, and kitchen clean and tidy. Making The Grapevine very enjoyable place to stay. It has been a wonderful stay there with group events like quizes and sunday brunches.
There is a New World within walking distance(less than 10 minutes) so if you don't have a car it's not gonna be a problem for grocery shopping.
And as you can see, The Grapevine has a wonderful view. For me I was enjoying my time after work with food, beer, and a beautiful view.
Highly recommended!

What a lush place to stay!
After starting of by saying I’ll only stay for a few weeks to trying to leave three times but always returning I’ve finally left Grapevine Backpackers.
It truly is a home away from home, although the kitchen is a bit on the smaller side it honestly brings everyone together by having shared meals and family dinners.
My absolute favourite part was the hammocks on the deck with the river as a view. A great place for meditation with friends or just some alone time.
You have a fireplace where everyone ends up socialising especially during them colder winter days. And only a short walk from town and quick drive to the beaches on them summer days.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be there through two great managers both Harleigh and now Ellise who both make it truly welcoming and not only care about the environment but for the guests staying at Grapevine as well. They put on events to keep you entertained from quizzes to feasts.
I will truly miss all of the wonderful Chicas who made Grapevine my NZ family ☺️❤️

I came to Blenheim to work for two weeks and ended up staying for three months. The family and community inside this hostel are amazing. Had an absolutely beautiful summer exploring the region's rivers, beaches, hikes etc. Bets New Years Eve of my life! Its the people that make a place and the team at Grapevine have worked so hard to make this feel like a second home.
Too much guys xx

I felt welcomed by the manager Ellise immediately even before my arrival. She's very professional and knows exactly what to do when it comes to suit your needs. A very lovely lady and makes this place more pleasant. She also organized some nice game nights during weekends.
The White House I have stayed is relatively quiet and I appreciated that. I like the no noise after 10pm rule and most of the time people followed it.
Suggestions:
The facilities in the house are ok but could be better with some decent knives. I used my own knife during my stay.
The kitchen.
people who stayed in the main house from across the road sometimes come and cook in the White House which makes the little kitchen more crowded but I don't blame them since I have heard the kitchen in the main house is more overwhelming at the peak time. Maybe there's a better solution to make everyone comfy.
The young couples
People meet and fall in love which is not a new thing under the sun. But while preparing food at 6pm in the kitchen, loud moaning from the little couple's room can be awkward to hear. I also happen to bump into other two couples sleep together on the same bed in a mixed dorm. I don't know how their roommates handled that. I will just flee away from the hostel if I happened to be their roommates. Maybe more couples room should be built or more rules could be reinforced.
In a nutshell, the place itself is a typical backpacker hostel but with a good vibe. I met a lot of nice people there genuinely. This's one of the hostel in Blenheim has got multiple cultural background so you meet people from everywhere in the world and not just from certain countries so yes everyone speaks English! Hooray!
P.s If you wanna look for work in Blenheim easily, come here
and they arrange things in a proper and helpful way! I appreciated that too.
Thank you. Some of my comments are a wee bit mean but it's my genuine thought.
Cheers

I stayed at The Grapevine for 2 and a half months and had a super time. Work was lined up for me as soon as I arrived by the very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the location of the hostel itself is gorgeous, right next to the river where you can swim and kayak. There is a real family atmosphere, I made friends with a bunch of people from all over the world. Would highly recommend to anyone to come and stay here.

The Grapevine is one of my favorite homes in New Zealand. I met there so many nice people. They became my new family during my stay. Everyone is so friendly and you feel welcome from the first second. There is always something going on from kayaking, quiz or movie night, having dinner together or just hang out!

The Grapevine Backpackers is one of my favourite places in New Zealand. Quietly situated along the Ōpaoa River, this hostel is full to the brim with love, joy, laughter and comradery.
Upon my arrival, I was immediately welcomed into the Grapevine family, a group of some of the most loving, funny and talented young travellers I've ever met. Initially, I had only planned to stay in Blenheim for a few days but found myself having such a great time I didn't want to leave!
The managers here are wonderful, they'll make sure you have a comfortable stay and will often organize fun events, including movie nights, quizzes and potluck dinners. With so many people staying here, you'll never find yourself bored in Blenheim.
While the kitchen may be on the smaller side, cooking here quickly brings people together - everyone sharing stories, jokes, music and recipes. There is a beautiful backyard where you can enjoy your meal with a stunning view of the river.
For your convenience, there are free bikes available to get you quickly across town - though make sure to take a lock with you or you may be walking back! I highly recommend making use of the free kayaks, on a hot day there is nothing better than cruising east down the river and hurling yourself into the water from the rope swing.
In short, I had a marvellous time at the Grapevine and I'm sure you will as well.

Stayed in this hostel for a couple of months over winter and I absolutely loved it. Honestly the best place I've stayed at in New Zealand so far.
The management is absolutely lovely and really helpful in organizing a job or literally anything else for you plus the working vibe in the hostel creates a really nice, family like atmosphere. The outside area with hammocks and kayaks is the perfect spot to spend one of the many sunny Blenheim days. Highly recommend for anyone looking for work or a family, looking forward to be back soon!
E. B.
The Grapevine is where I met my backpacker family and I loved every minute of it. When I first arrived I was instantly found a job which turned out to be the best job ever. The manager Harleigh is the best, she is so organised and will try and fulfill whatever it is you need. The Hostel backs onto the river and is just a great place to sit and relax in the Blenheim sunshine. I will definitely go back here. Friendly, fun and relaxed vibe it's just great 😁

I spent the last two months at the Grapevine and absolutely loved it. Best location, very central and close to New world, best staff ever, very kind and helpful in any situation. The hostel is situated by the river and you can kayak , or you can get a bike a ride it along, all free of charge. They even promote many activities during the weekends. Highly recommended anytime and if I'll find myself again in Blenheim I'm sure already where to spend my nights.
F. B.
We stayed at this hostel for three months over winter and in that time it became a place for us to call home, complete with an awesome international family! The staff are always willing to help you out however they can and do a great job of helping people find work. The atmosphere is relaxed, comfortable and inclusive. It didn't take us long at all to make some amazing friends!
Highly recommend this hostel long term and will be back in a heartbeat if our travels take us that way again!
P. S.
I spent the past few months living at the Grapevine and have made some life long friends. Spent many a weekends out in gorgeous outside/hammock area next to the river with free kayaks and beers! A hostel you can easily call home, the managers are gorgeous, friendly and are there for anyone in need and the owner will always go above and beyond to find you work and make sure you are comfortable and happy! Would recommend this hostel for all those backpackers looking for work and a cosey place to stay!
Will miss this hostel and will definitely be back!!!
I. M.
I very much enjoyed myself at Grapevine! If you are looking for a good company instead of a luxury this is a right place to stay at! Everyone was super friendly especially Harleigh who with her positive and welcoming attitude made me feel like home! If you are also looking for a job she is always willing to help you out and makes sure you are enjoying yourself there. The hostel itself it’s not very spacious especially when it gets busy with people but after living in a car for a while it definitely has got everything you need from hot showers to comfy beds and nice and clean kitchen. The back patio overlooking the river was my favorite spot for hanging out with others. You can also take hostels kayaks down the river for free! Parking is also provided in front of the hostel or if it gets busy you can just simply park it on the street. In terms of socializing they also try to organize activities for everyone such as Friday’s quizzes and much more so you never get bored 😊

When I think of all the places I consider to be home, the uniting feature is the supportive community that takes shape. It's the people that will notice if you don't make it home, will give you space if you need it, will share food and drinks, and know how to make you smile. It didn't take long for me to find that and more at the Grapevine, and I know that many others share similar sentiments. Whether you're there for work, celebrate Christmas and the New Years, to relax or have a raging good time, the folks at the Grapevine will work tirelessly to ensure you have what you need.
I planned on staying for 2 months to just hustle and work, but in addition to being provided with job options, I ended up joining the gym across the street, making friends with people I couldn't leave and immediately falling in love with the marvels of the area. I stayed for 4.5 months and spent heaps of time relaxing in the hammocks by the river, jumping in the river, walking to town (it's close!) doing trivia, finding hidden gems in town, drinking the fruits of our labour on the porch, rummaging through the bounty in the free closet, and going on adventures.
I can't recommend this place enough. I'm not entirely sure why I left.

The Grapevine Backpackers had been my on-and-off home since November 2019. If you are looking for amazing people that uplift you when work was hard, shared dinners with friends (that really turn into family) or if you just want to hang out in a hammock with a cold drink, this is the place to come to. We have an amazingly grumpy cat here called Fat Larry, he will probably steal your heart, too.
Harleigh is the kindest person you could ever want for a manager; she always did her best to get everybody a job, kept the noise down outside for a quiet night and always had a big smile on her face and an open ear if you needed something. Her boyfriend James and others started to give the whole place a new coat of paint and it looks amazing!
Most of the beds here are made out of wood (extra comfort!), there is a fireplace that‘s amazing in winter, the hostel is located right at the river and super close to supermarkets and the town center AND Blenheim rarely runs out of jobs.
Only downside to this place is the small-ish kitchen, but there is a good amount of storage space allocated to everyone and multiple fridges and freezers.
I have meet SOO many amazing people here, this is definitely the place to come to for finding life long friends! When you come around, give Rick a hug (he‘s the smiling german guy that probably offered you some of his home-baked goods already).
Much love, until next time! x

Stayed for 6 month and had a lovely time with lovely people. Nice hostel with a good family vibe. Would definetely recommend if you're looking for a place to stay in blenheim for a short or a long period of time
F. L. N.
A really fun backpacker hostel. Very warm in winter. Even if i had already a Job they offered me to find one if i need it.
The cat is lovely. A furry company specially for winter!

I loved my 2 months at the grapevine! Had such a nice time with everyone there, wasnt one person I didn't get on or bond with, it's a great family feeling around the place and harleigh the manager is there to help with whatever you need! She found me a job before I had even arrived and I felt right at home immediately. I will definitely be going back at some point of my travels. Honestly one of my best experiences in nz if not the best so far 🤗 you also have access to the river from the hostel ground and free kayaks to explore on those hot marlborough days. 5/5 for me defintely!
A. W.
I stayed for just about five weeks during the grape harvest in Waiharakeke. Beautifully clean and well managed facility, but what sets the Grapevine apart is the manaakitanga of the managers Harleigh and James and the lovely group of people staying while I was there. The free kayak hire was also a highlight, as well as swimming in the river which is on the doorstep. Annette who works in housekeeping is also super lovely and great at her job. Two minutes walk to the supermarket and pick up points for mahī. Will be recommending to other people on their travels. See you next time :)
D. R.
I loved staying at the grapevine!
The people and atmosphere was just lovely a true home away from home, if you needed anything all you had to do was ask and me and my partner got work straight away as they worked so hard to make sure everyone was happy and safe! Loved it.
M. K.
My favourite hostel in all of New Zealand! It's the most welcoming and social place there is. As a solo traveller you will feel welcomed immediately. The ameneties are good and the location is amazing! Directly next to the river. You can go for a paddle with one of the freely provided kajaks or for a swim. But the best part are definitely the people working there and the people you will meet there! Thanks so much guys! x
L. T.
Five stars! If this hostel was a spacecraft hurtling through space, which it most certainly is, it is held together by gum and protected from cosmic radiation by love. Elise and Page are the captains of this love ship and chewers of that gum. I’m not in my 20’s nor do I work supporting the food supply chain, which made me the odd alien on this love gum ship, but everyone was nice. My kind of space trash.
K. R.
This was my home away from home. I spent 6 months of my time in NZ at the grapevine and wished I had more. I made friends with lots awesome people, met my girlfriend and ended up with many memorable moments. If you have the chance to stay long term, I would definitely recommend you do so!
K. V.
It’s not a hostel! It’s a home 🏠
I was having pretty tough time When I first arrived in Picton, I didn’t know what am I doing, where was I going bla bla when I found grapevine on backpacker board and read the most cliché quote ever “Come as a guest, leave as a family “ and I was like huh 😒😏
But..from the day I’ve arrived here it has been the most welcoming and friendly hostel ever. I’ve met some of the most lovely people here.!! For me it’s a home I can always come back too. 💓
Big love to Harleigh
g. m.
I had spent a beautiful time in the Grapevine, it is a nice place with a big terrasse close to the river, a lot spots to chill, a warm fireplace and different rooms and the owner Karin is very nice.
Just the kitchen is pretty small, but it's possible to handle. there live a fat cat Larry, you will like him for sure haha
M. K.
Wonderful hostel!!
I enjoyed my time there very much. The staff is so lovely and friendly, you can meet there many open-minded people and the location next to the river is so beautiful. It was also so nice to do the kayaking there (for free!).
It was like a second home :)
M. F.
Always something to do loads of events quizzes, movie nights and cheese and wine afternoons overlooking the river. Free use of kayaks. Great location near CrossFit and New world. Can hire bikes from the hostel to do your own self guided wine tour. Maps of the wineries provided.
R. B.
The Grapevine Backpackers Hostel was a very good experience. Karen is really nice and caring and when you need a job she sure has one for you. She also organizes some BBQs for the whole hostel which create a very familiar atmosphere. All in all we spent a great time there, met lots and lots of cool people and can't complain about anything. (four stars because there is only cold wash available and free wifi only in communal areas)
D. M.
I can’t write reviews, this place is just simply too good. I LOVE GRAPEVINE BACKPACKERS!!!! AHHHH!!!!!!
I really wish I could live here forever 😍 My 2 months holiday turned into 5, but no doubt I will be coming back for many more months in the future. 10/10 great stay
J. P.
There aren't really the words to sum up how much we loved our time at the Grapevine. It is without doubt our home away from home, and you will do well to find somewhere better to live while you work, or even just as a stop over on your way around the South island.
The hostel itself has the most homely and welcoming feeling I have ever encountered in a hostel. The living areas, outside and chilling space set up the perfect environment to find a New Zealand family, perfect to moan to about your days working in the factories or on the vineyards!
Beautiful location perfectly situated on the river, you'll rarely find a nicer place to eat your breakfast (or crack open a Ranfurly).
Karen (who runs the hostel) deserves a special mention. From the moment we arrived Karen has helped us in anyway she possibly could, and has gone far beyond what you would expect of a hostel owner. She found us our jobs, answered any questions we ever had and was always there to help us out in anyway she possibly could.
The working period of our travels was supposed to be the unenjoyable bit that we had to get through so we could travel, but instead became arguably the most enjoyable six months of my time in New Zealand.
This is all down to the Grapevine hostel, Karen and all the wonderful people we met here.
If you're looking for somewhere to live while you work, or for help finding a job I couldn't recommend the Grapevine highly enough.
Thanks again Karen,
Joe x

A couple of weeks stay turned in to a 4 month stay. One of the best hostels in New Zealand. Great vibes, familylike feeling, nice location with its own access to the river & a great sundeck. Clean, good facilities & the owners are amazing! Really nice & always ready to help out. Ive really felt at home here!
F. L.
I stayed in the Grapevine for a month and I really had a great time in there 😊 lots of friendly people, super clean and tidy, nice garden and good rooms. Special mention to Ellise, the manager, who can also help you to find a job in Blenheim 😘
S. B.
I wasn’t sure I’d like Blenheim when I arrived but the Grapevine hostel made all the difference! Really felt like a big family. I’ve been there 3 times and every time it feels like home. I don’t have a car but it’s really close to the center so I didn’t have any problems to go shopping!
P.S savemart is a gold mine and its really close to the hostel as well :) Karen is always there to help you find a job or give you advice about traveling. Shes the best!!

A home away from home full of new friends both human and furry in the form of a cat. A warm fire for a cold night and a beautiful riverside location. Great opportunities for work. Would recommend for anyone looking for work in the Blenheim area
S.
Best hostel in Blenheim! Homely and relaxing with the best river view and lots of friendly people. Karen is so welcoming and offers top advice and can help you find a job.
S. W.
Was only a visitor but my son really enjoyed his stay here with a number of international backpackers. He said there was always something going on which he really enjoyed. Cooked in groups and shared food. Well managed place.
W. B.
Wonderful place on the best place in Blenheim : close to city centre and next to the river, so the hostel have the best view.
You can use kayaks for free, find a job thanks to the awesome management team that has been really helpful.
It's not big but it's cosy, and I've been back to it many times for the atmosphere.
If you are in Blenheim, that's the place to be.
J. K.
Workers oriented hostel. People are getting up and starting their day extremely early, so the large dorm rooms are less recommended. Kitchen is not well equipped, and there is not enough space for all the guests' food. The lounge was pleasant, like the balcony. The kayaks and access to the river is a great bonus. The staff were friendly and approachable. The fact there was no free Wi-fi was a real bummer.
G. B.
Initially my lockdown home to where I choose to return and spend my last month's in NZ. Hands down my favourite hostel, where I've had the best of times with the best of people. So long Grapevine 🍇 #wayfareren
A. B.
Hey there!
I stayed in this hostel for 3 months to work and can say only good things about it. At the end of my stay it really felt like I'd leave home to travel again.
That's also a reason why I came back for another 2 months for a second stay. The lovely owners Karen and Leean made the hostel feel like home and are always there for you to help and answer your questions. Karen also helps you find a fitting job for you and have your best interest in mind. I met some of the most awesome people in the world in this hostel and I defenitly had one of the best times in New Zealand if not of in my life.
It's also really close to town so you have everything in reach plus its right next to the river and has several nice places to hang out after work.
I would defenitly come back if I had the time.
Thank you for everything Karen!
M.
A little outside of town the hostel is more for the working people who live a longer while in Blenheim. This fact makes it quiet chilled and relaxed. The surroundings are quiet and you got good parking space available for free. The WiFi does cost a hilarious price, so better go out to the library. Beds have been comfy and rooms decently sized. Only thing in the beginning I didn't like was the location a the end of a street leading through and industrial estate which takes a bit the charme away, but also keeps the place quiet. Stayed here for two nights in a five bed dorm with my girlfriend and we would go here again! :)
C. S.
Can recommend staying here, when you are looking for a good working-hostel. The owner has good contacts and will find you a job. I stayed in the second building. The facilities are really good.. you have to pay extra for the WiFi, but then it works. Furthermore the weekly rate is 140, so not to bad. In the main building the kitchen seems to be really small, but bathrooms are good as well.
L. G.
Stayed in the Grapevine Hostel last year over the winter for around 4 months and it has for sure been fun with some little issues here and there. Well but those occured rather rarely.
There is this river in the back what is pretty sick, aswell are kayaks provided by Karen free to use.
All in all the house has a very nice atmosphere, decent outside area and a fireplace for the cold months.
New World, Warehouse, BK , McD and Dominos are also just a 5-10 min walk away.
Would definitley go there again.
Only tips for Karen to enhance the guests expirience, would be to change/repaire the door of the first 6p dorm on the right. It hardly closed and then it was pretty icy in winter, because it is straight up next to the entrance and when people go in and out cold air will fill the room.
Ah and a squichy (?) for the bathroom next to the reception so the guests can use it after a shower, so the next one wont have wet feet 😇
Still thank you so much Karen and all those staying with me, had a hell of a fun time <3

(Translated) Very nice place nothing to say, right on the water and possibility of taking kayaks. The only bemo was the kitchen, a table only to eat while the backpacker can hold many people. But many tables are available outside (summer and spring must be perfect for this place!)
