J.The Dorset House was by far the best hostel of the three I've been to in Christchurch.
Our twin room was very large and equipped with everything we could wish for: Heating blankets, heater, two pillows each, bedside table+lamp, towels and even a flat screen TV.
There were conveniently located bathrooms which were clean and modern and had a nice shower (although it was a bit difficult adjusting it to right temperature).
The hostel has a spacious and well equipped kitchen with plenty of fridge space, acceptable storage space for other groceries and enough stovetops and an oven. We also enjoyed the lounge with a billiard table, TV, plenty of seating and the really friendly and accommodating staff!
All in all a great hostel for short and long-term stays with amazing rooms which are offered at a really competitive price, especially when you book at weekly rates. Highly recommended, I will definitely stay again if I return (:
L.Helpful, friendly and informative Staff 5 stars. Well organized. Internet was not so strong in remote areas and we had to sign in a lot. Our room and shared bathrooms were clean. Showers hot. Our twin room was big and had a closet, the double room was smaller with no closet. Close to downtown and lovely Hagley Park. Honestly I want a 4 1/2 stars because the internet was difficult but otherwise 5 stars. Photos of park
G.A really cool place to stay! Ended up spending our last 2 weeks of our NZ trip here, much due to friendly staff but also super nice rooms with comfy beds. Free unlimited WiFi. Nice kitchen with all necessary utensils. Superb location!
D.This hostel is in a great location, good free wifi and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We stayed in a double room which was clean and the bed was very comfy. Heated blanket was also a nice addition! Bathrooms also clean and tidy - good showers too. Highly recommended.
S.A small walk from the CBD. This hostel is in a nice quiet street between the main park and the restaurant/cafe street of the city. The hostel itself is a lovely building with very friendly & helpful staff. We had a private room and it was a good size and even had its own TV. We really enjoyed our stay at Dorset House.
B.Great hostel. Very friendly, good atmosphere but quiet at the same time. Not far from city centre. 2 min from botanical garden. Great if you have just arrived in NZ, they will let you use their address as New Zealand address if you need to open a bank account. Just need to ask when checking in.
T.Lovely place which will make you feel welcome. Very convenient location as it's close to the airport bus, close to the magnificent botanical garden and 15min walk from the city center and the info center.
Beds are comfy, though it gets a little cold at night. Shower and toilet are clean. Kitchen is nice but could use a little more fridge space.
A.The moment we entered the premise,we fell in love with the ambience and setup of the house. Customer service personnel is very helpful and friendly. The kitchen is complete with all cooking utensils and the room is super comfy. Recommended to those who wish to stay in christchurch.
c.The location of this backpackers is perfect. It is right next to Hagley park, busing and a short walk to the center of town. It is an older building. Heaters that you can control in each room, however the kitchen, halls and bathrooms are not heated and are chilly in the winter. The kitchen is well stocked with things you will need including spices and plenty of space to prepare your food and sit down and eat. I didn't have a problem with noise the entire time I was there. The staff at the front desk are very friendly and willing to help you in any way they can.
J.First time travelling on my own! such a good spot by the park and I found it nice walking to botanic gardens and the city centre. Nice and clean and everything I needed was available. Even before I arrived staff were fantastic, answering all my questions and ensuring my stay was comfortable and safe. Such a nice first couple of nights for a solo traveller! Might be back in mid August! Thank you so much to the lovely staff.
J.We had a private room which was small but cosy and well kitted out. There seem to be plenty of showers for the number of rooms and all communal facilities were kept clean. We had a car but rarely used it as it is right next to a big park and walking distance to lots of restaurants and the city centre.
T.Very cute hostel, nice staff, clean. Not far from city center and beautiful botanical garden. Started our NZ trip here and were so happy that we stayed there as wel for our last day, before heading home.
D.Only came for 2 nights to see a concert. This was perfect for me... walking distance to CBD & Hagley Park. Room was clean and tidy and staff were friendly and helpful. Great for a quick trip like with no frills required. Only real issue was a couple of blocked toilets. Would recommend to family and friends.
R.I stayed at Dorset House at the beginning of July 2012. The facilities were very good with a fully equipped kitchen and common room. However we had issues with the shower facilites with fluctuating hot and cold water and we felt that the heating in our room was inadequate for the weather (we had to go and buy extra blankets and smuggle in a fan heater). Also, the room we stayed in did not look like it had been vacuumed for a long time. At reception the lady who checked us in was not very friendly, but we did encounter another staff member who was more welcoming. All-in-all the facilities were as they were describes, but for $85 per night, twin share, I would probably stay somewhere else if I visit Christchurch again.
R.Very friendly girl at reception. Everything you need from a backpackers. Comfy beds. The only bad thing I can think of is the TV remote didn't work - hardly worth mentioning. Great place.
T.Friendly staff, great location to good food options, pretty quiet and right by the park and botanical garden. The 12 person room I was in was quite large compared to others I've been in. There was a bit of a weird smell in our room, but there was like a dehumidifier taking care of it. Didn't cook, but kitchen was kind of small!

location from pubs and restaurants are fine, 1 bus can take you to city center.
if you need a taxi to the airport, this hostel is about 15 minutes from Christchurch airport. you should order the 'SuperShuttle' which is cheaper than a taxi and will take you from your door step at anytime of the day.
Dorset House Backpackers is a great place if you just landed in Christchurch or you just about to leave :)
B.Nice homley feeling hostel. Good well equipped kitchen, nice lounge with a TV and pool table. Clean bathrooms and nice dorm rooms. Advice is book directly via their website then you get unlimited free WiFi.

H.I thought it was a bit underhanded they told me there was "assured" parking when there's not. Only 5 parks for the whole hostel so i couldn't take my car out in case i lost my place. Also was given a room that had no windows to outside so It was impossible to breathe all night unless I opened my window to the drunken people in the corridor. $80 for the room I stayed in is a BIT excessive but that's NZ I guess.
N.Cute old house with a lot of character. Each bed has an electric warming pad underneath! So nice! Had a really warm comfortable sleep. Helpful staff and quite a large kitchen.

O.Dorset house is just a lovely place where is worth to stay for a night. It has an interesting old style atmosphere..... The staff is nice and location is also very good... in a calm part of the city next to a river and big park....

The private room is located on the same floor or corner as the group room, there is a shower room that is used only with 4 private rooms, the kitchen and the terrace face each other, and there is a corridor in the middle.
It was like that in the low season, but it was too quiet, clean, and the electric heater heater TV outlet was not bad.

어째서 고속도로가 하나뿐인데 헤맸는지 이해는 가지않으나 어찌됐건 길 헤매다가 늦었더니 내 키와 서류을 다 넣어서 꽂아놔줬었음
주차는 조금 헤맸었음..파킹 위치 잘봐야함 아님 돈냄..짐 풀다가 쌔해서 다시 안에 자리하나 나서 겨우 세웠음
개인실은 단체방과 같은 층이나 구석에 떨어져있고 개인실 4방과만 사용하는 샤워실도있고 부엌과 테라스도 마주보는데 중간에 복도도있어서 그런지 생활음만 조금 들리고 아침에도 그렇게 시끄럽진 않았음
비수기에 와서 그런것 같기도하지만 너무 조용하고 깨끗하고 전기장판 히터 티비 콘센트 위치도 다 나쁘지않았음
베드도 커서 좋았음
개인실 많이 고민했는데 잘한 선택인듯
