Awesome place! Very quiet and secluded, perfect for a getaway 🙂. And swimming with the dolphins was amazing! We got to swim with them twice in one trip.
Just be aware that some of the campsites and most of the stargazer huts are a bit of a trek from the car park. So you'll want to pack light if you're staying in those. There are facilities for cooking (and a fridge, microwave etc) close to the car park though, so you won't need to take everything with you anyway.

Stayed in the van park camping. $60 for 4 of us, walk up a bit for amazing views! There's a free walks around which we didn't have time to do but look great.Pretty good set up, hut with 2 fridges, a couple of charging stations for devices, cooking facilities, showers and a couple of toilets- another couple would be great for the amount of folk. The reception area is super dink. Recommend taking a walk around as the location is beautiful plus the wee gardens and area where the huts are is lovely. It's a great place to stay. Drive could be difficult for some vehicles as it's a bit steep.

I stayed over the Xmas break 2020 and it is a beautiful stop to stay. It was 7 degrees overnight and in the tent that was a little challenging. The amenites were very rustic but I had no problems. The reception for phone/Wifi is very very limited and there is only one place to be able to charge your gadgets.
I also went on the dolphin swimming trip and it was well worth it. For the price is was good value and we had a really good time.

Probably my favorite place so far in the South Island, back for the 5th time this year.
It's a hidden gem, very quiet and peaceful. One thing to note is the road up to the hostel is quite steep and people (myself included) have had their cars breakdown from the steep incline so be cautious when driving up here! (Still worth it IMO)
B.
Wow!! I've been here three times now and each time it seems more wonderful. Staff are super helpful and friendly, the facilities are tidy and well equipped. The thing that just marvels me each time is the location!! Just absolutely stunning location and gorgeous accommodation. Could not recommend this spot any higher!

Stayed here for 1 night with my wife(November 2018).
The location itself is amazing, I grew in a farm like community so i felt at home right away. my wife though is a city person but also felt the great vibes of the place.
The hosts were very nice and helped us decide where should we best go on hikes (there are just too many!)
The room we took (double bed) was very clean and fairly enough big for our muchilas and our day backpacks. the one thing seemed a bit odd was that all of the rooms (we were in the main building) didn't had locks.
The kitchen was fully equipped 'with everything we needed for making a gourmet meal, and the dining room was nice and cozy, same with the living room that had fireplace and many magazines and books if you just wanted to stay at the hostel and read.
You can take many hikes routes right from the hostel and see great views even in less then 10 minutes walk.
DON'T FORGET - the hostel area is great for Stargazing!!! don't miss it!

I was REALLY surprised at how good this campsite was for as little as we paid.
The bathrooms feel a little like Eco bathrooms from the outside, but when you actually go in, they function perfectly, the showers were also absolutely great.
We stayed in a campervan here and we had plenty of space here and it's actually surprisingly quiet at night.
The only major issue with this place is the drive up to it is horrific as its a single lane up a big hill which regularly had people coming down that didn't know how to drive (someone wanted us to reverse down a steep corner in our three person caravan as they couldn't pull up to a gap in the side in their tiny car).
I would say that if you are a confident driver, you should be OK in a big van!
G.
We had a wonderful stay in one of the huts. Felt amazingly private. Shared bathroom facilities can get quite busy as the huts share it with the campground. Shared facilities were clean, hot water was always available. Hut was clean and had enough space for two people, interiors are quite dated (but hey! It's a hut!). Would definitely come back.
C.
Did the SkyTrack walk with friends. Stayed in the Stargazer Hut for one night. The views of the stars in the middle of the night were so nice and the hut was super cozy. The views from camp were amazing. Walked down to the private beach (rocky and a half hour to get there) which was wonderful. The reception staff were also very friendly. There are a few good hikes from the hostel with great views of the bay. Best price for the area. Take advantage of the free pick-up from Akaroa!
M.
Lovely place to stay! We stayed in the campervan park and were greeted by some sheep with a sweet little lamb and a bunch of chicken. The facilities are all clean and well kept, although the number of toilets on the van park is somewhat low. There is a lot to do, you can go kayaking, go swim with dolphins or you can walk a number of tracks. Great place to stay for a couple of nights!
M.
Great eco friendly hostel, very chilled and right next to hiking tracks with stunning views. The campervan park looked great too with some good facilities. It's also far enough away from Akaroa that the stars on a clear night are superb.
A.
This farm + campsite sits atop the hill overlooking the French Bay which was beautiful and check-in for our camper went as smoothly as one imagined. There are supposedly hot showers but we didn't try it, medium size kitchen / communal area for people to prepare their meals and stuff. It would have been better if there were more toilets. Free roaming animals was a plus point.
E.
We stayed at the van site and it was really nice. Views of the ocean out the window. All the facilities are nice and close and open for the breeze on the hot days. Friendly staff and animals around the camp site makes you feel like you're in a retreat away from all the bustle of akaroa on the busy days. The only downside was we left our awning up while away and were unlucky enough to have the pet sheep get into our things.
L.
I really liked this campground. It was the first we went to of our trip and it has a nice view and grass campsite where you can park whenever you want.
The staff was ok, and the kitchen functional and big. The bathrooms were a bit small and not so private, but it wasn t an issue for me.
F.
Great spot for the true backpacker. Range of camping, dorm and hut accommodation. We stayed in a stargazer hut (pictured) with a glass roof to watch the stars through. Wonderful community spirit with a great range of nationalities represented in the guests. Wouldn't suit glampers.
S.
Friendly hostel. Camping facilities basic but they do the job; be aware the camping area is quite hilly! Some very nice hiking trails nearby.
I.
Superb views in a really nice piece of nature. Some of the spots are a bit on an incline so the van won't be 100% horizontal.
Facilities are basic but fine, a bit limited in number. Better if you can cook in your camper.
Fantastic to have the animals around you
V.
My favorite place in New Zealand.
The surroundings are beautiful, Jef the owner managed to build a very welcoming and agreeable place to be at.
The German team managing the place could be more friendly and smiling. If you want your customers to feel welcome, you should understand that rules are not everything.
C.
I had the best time here in 2016. Everything was reasonably clean, the Stargazer was stunningly beautiful and comfy. The shower was scalding at times and the staff gregarious. We were invited to game (I never had a better game master for werewolf) or movie nights regularly, we went diving for Pāua with Sol the husband of the manager (if I recall correctly) or simply enjoyed the peace and quiet of the beautiful surroundings sitting outside and reading. The only downside was the 90 minute walk to Akaroa but the staff was more than supportive. Even if they couldn't fit us into the car because they took new customers up to the hostel, they would always offer to take our groceries or backpacks. The whole place has kind of a hippie feel to it but not too much. If you enjoy good times and even better vibes, you've come to the right place.
W.
A great hostel. We stayed in the cabins. Although very basic, which is something to think about on cold days. You're on the other side of the grounds so there's no indoor place with a table to sit/ eat/ relax. We had a separate private kitchen, which was great. Next to the shared bathroom. It's a few meters away from the cabin. The bathroom was clean and spacious. One of the best we've had in New Zealand. With good weather you can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful view. It's a great place to relax and unwind. There's no Wi-Fi at the cabins though.
F.
Stayed for 2 nights and is a relaxed and friendly place. Lots of chicken and sheep that mix up the usual camping routine. Van camp site has spectacular views over the bay and is highly recommended.
M.
The campsite and its views are really beautiful. It's so peaceful and you meet nice people. We also had the unique opportunity to eat spaghetti with a goat. Well, actually, the goat just grabbed our spaghetti pot, but it was very funny;)
G.
Really nice views from here and on the nearby tramping walks. It's a small, cozy, quiet and remote hostel. Good beds and the hostel had a lot of charm and character. Not very clean, but it is a hostel on a farm so fair enough. I stayed in what I believe was 1 of only 3 or 4 small rooms there, so the actual hostel is pretty small.
The drive was further from the main town than I thought it would be just by looking at the map, and possibly it's a better place for couples or small groups because after appreciating the views, there is nothing going on there if you don't have something to keep you occupied. It seemed like many of the people that were staying were long-term and working there, but they mostly just keep to themselves and there is not much of a social and friendly environment. If these are ok with you I think it is a nice place to soak in the nature, but could be a bit boring if you travel there solo. Could use a little bit of positive energy and friendliness
L.
We did camping 🏕 here was good for camping. Nice and quiet place. Staffs are kind. Toilets weren’t nice but it’s okay. Hot showers were good and antique kitchen places were okay. Also reasonable price $15 pp. good and i found the sheep I haven’t seen before ᕼᗩᕼᗩ
F.
Best campsite in Nz, their shower is warm, they have all kitchen items, staff is lovely, well located. Good short hikes around. Good for anybody, families, youth, etc
R.
I spent about two weeks around Easter there and had the best time. Personally my favorite place on (at least) the South Island, if not in all of NZ.
Take a day off just enjoying the chill atmosphere of the farm house and the people working/staying there or go on one of the great walks they have on the farm land for some impressive views over Akaroa Habour.
If that's not enough there is also Dolphin swimming and kayaking throughout the summer season.
T.
We camped here so can't really comment on the hostel, though the people were friendly. There weren't too many people camping so we had the place more or less to ourselves. Showers were hot and there was even a nice enclosed spot to cook. The best part about this place was the view. It's super quiet and surrounded by nature. We booked a kayak through Onuku and paddled out on the bay with dolphins.
S.
We stayed in the tui hut. This is the last hut in the complex. Very basic but has everything you need. Comfy bed, own kitchen and toilet block near by. Overall we loved it
C.
Campground is on a very steep hill, and you have to chose / find a empty tent site that has been flattened. Ground is very hard so can be tricky for tent pegs. Cooking area and showers at the bottom of steep hill. You have to park elsewhere and carry your things in. Definite relaxed hippie vibe. Unlimited hot water in shower but it's outside and sheet was blowing so you could be exposed! Lots of cicadas (live) in the shower so might unsettle the bug-phobic. Dolphin swimming on offer for less than in town, I didn't do it so can't comment.
K.
A gorgeous spot near Akaroa. We stayed in the stargazing hut which have an amazing view of the night sky however no privacy from those walking past or staying nearby. Really enjoyed the ridge walk and to the look out rock.
M.
Been using the hostel 5 bed dorm with my girlfriend for two nights. Over all the stuff, facilities and cleanliness is good & nice, but everything feels a bit 'puzzled' together. There are two mini kitchen, the windows are all not realy sealing and the showers are outside the house.
I guess this comes down to the fact that the place is a "farm" - Hostel. The owner is very welcoming and friendly. The girls at the reception easy going and do would they can do make you feel home.
Prices are appropriate, the WiFi signal is weak, but free, which comes from the very remote location.
It's about 15 minutes to Akaroa, the closest town, via very windy and narrow road. Not suitable for large vehicles or campers.
So if you would like to get off the beaten track enjoying the silence and wood fire in the living room it's great. If you are looking for a modern place, than better go somewhere else.
j.
we love how cute this farm hostel is.. the host was lovely and the facilities are nicely decorated to have the rustic farm feel.
guests are all very friendly too! we made some friends with the chickens who would roam around the van park/ camp ground every now and then :)
V.
The best place to stay around Akaroa! We have been a few times the last 4 years and it has always been awesome. This place is very kids friendly the staff is always nice and helpful and the hostel, tent side, caravan campground and stargazer are all great! It's very budget friendly and defiantly worth a visit.
J.
Great place. Milky way clearly visible. The dolphin tour was amazing and much more affordable than eco seaker (although the skipper from Onuku farm hostel is the father from the skipper from eco seaker). Short but windy and steep road. Any 2WD car will do it. Place for campers is convenient with toilets, showers a kitchen and common area. Would have stayed longer if possible. Charge your souls battery here. Recommended 💯
Cheers
S.
Spent a night here in the campervan. Good price and very friendly staff. Camp ground was clean. The toilets were good and clean too. The shared kitchen was excellent with great facilities which were clean and organised. Not too overpacked. We would stay here again.
X.
Friendly owners. Not many people there, I had my dorm for myself so it was good. Two small kitchen. Very cold as soon as the sun disappears. Outside area is beautiful, quiet, many tracks to walk, great view.
B.
Had a brilliant time at Onuku Farm Hostel. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Had plenty of outdoor activities to do, such as kayaking and swimming with dolphins. Everyone came together in the evening to socialise and play games. Great fun to have here away from the touristy and busy areas.
M.
Great Location, you have a fantastic view over the bay and some really beautiful walking tracks. The people are very kind and there are lots of sheeps and chickens walking around the farm. The facilities are always clean!
D.
Absolutely stunning views from the campsite. Really nice location.
A couple of very nice walks to do.
If the kitchen was a little bit bigger and if there were a little more showers, I would have given 5 stars easily.
J.
Great camping/hostel in a beautiful and rustic landscape. Birdsong like crazy! This and Wood pigeons fill the air . Mellow vibes, super laid back. Love it!
S.
Such a nice place with a wounderful staff! It was a pleasure to stay here! Surrounded by a beautiful landscape it offers everything you need to relax. Clean showers and toilets! Thank you!
S.
Loads of character in this establishment, which has a nice homely feel. There are a range of accommodation options from rooms in the old homestead to cubby-houses with clear panels in the roof so you can sleep under the stars without getting saturated. Communal cooking and ablution facilities were basic, but clean. Keep a sharp eye out for the attack-goose (and that's not a typo).
C.
Love this place so much! We stayed there three times already. Two times in the Stargazer (needs to be on everybody's bucket list) and once on the camp ground. The facilities are farmtypical basic but everything you need is there.
We'll be back soon 😊
M.
Cozy hostel that is literally at the end of the road. In the evening people gathered around the fireplace in the common room or in the dining room. There are two (or three?) well-equipped kitchens, games and also a minishop at reception. There's a couple of walks around the farm that start at the hostel. If you want to wind down, this is your place to go.
A.
Lovely farm stay 10 minutes past Akaroa. Perfect place to relax. Very nice staff too
M.
We stayed at the van park. It's one of the coolest spots in New Zealand, so relaxed. You can hire a kayak for 40$ and swim with the dolphins (you don't need to pay the 110$ for the dolphin swimming tour)
V.
Best camping that I’ve seen in New Zealand, still very simple and bucolic ;) Great mood, kind and efficient guys work there. And the other campers were young people, and that’s not so common in NZ!
w.
Absolutely loved this place, a really great set up and away from a busy akaroa day and they do a very up close and personal experience with the dolphins 🐬🐬🐬🐬
S.
Nice place ro camp. From the campervan sites you have a view over the bay. And at the receiption, there is sometimes a cute little sheep you can stroke :) Good price for a sweet little farm with chickens cats and sheeps.
G.
Camped here, superb views. Busy and facilities are old, worn and small, slightly hippy feel to the place (slack rope was in full swing). Unsealed road to get to the camping area.
D.
Onuku is a very rural yet beautiful village. The hostel is up in the mountains and the perfect place to relax for a couple of days. Staff were friendly and even offered free tomatoes and apples.
T.
This place would be amazing if the had more than one hob for 40 people to cook on. On the last day I stayed there, the shower was cold too. The vibe is great though, and has a very chilled vibe
F.
Awesome and quite place with an amazing view. You have a bunch of different activities during the day like hiking, swimming with dolphins or fishing. Friendly people and definitely worth the money!
P.
Best people there, it was supposed to be closed but the owner allowed us to stay on the field facing the ocean for free which was the best thing🙏🏼🙏🏼 Cute animals there and I was in awe of the outstanding scenery. A place to be when you are a backpacker for sure!!🥰
P.
Awesome campsite! Accomodations are great! Looks old and DIY but everything works better than my own stuff at home! Really good and peaceful atmosphere.
C.
Really nice, quaint hostel filled with friendly staff. Amenities were very clean. Would definitely recommend to friends visiting New Zealand!
G.
Lovely experience, we've been here in february 2015. Great stay at the campsite. A great chance to see dolphins from a smaller boat.
D.
Beautiful spot! All the amenities you need plus sheep, goats and chickens just hanging out with you. Breath taking views. Chill vibe. Wish we could have stayed longer!
T.
Just the spot, high on the hills looking back over the lake, great amenities, hot showers and beautiful stars and sunsets
P.
Nice view. Awesome owner. Helpfull staff. Little bit windy. Walk around. We had a nice time staying there in our campervan.
A.
Best accommodation in Akaroa... Different options and prices and plenty of facilities well cleaned and managed... Lovely staff ..lots of stuff to do all around... Kayaking, walking, dolphing 😂...and awesome views from the park
t.
Great Hostel up in the hills above the bay. Recommend the stargazer huts and kayaking the bay. Dolphins and penguins swam up to our kayaks.
E.
Great comfortable beds, relaxing company. Lovely walks some long, some not. Very well run by Joseph and Neiles and staff 😄
A.
Fabulous place to stay, bit of a hike for the camper but so worth it, the views are stunning and facilities are great
R.
Really great location, beautiful view, good facilities. Great place to stay

W.
Great facilities for campers and a wonderful setting.

S.
We just relaxed there for 5 days (camping and stargazer) and it was hard to leave this place, recommend it but be aware of the goose and his little sidekick :)
C.
Went there to take advantage of "swimming with Dolphins" was an absolutely amazing experience and would definitely recommend them 👌
J.
The views and walks are lovely but when the camps busy the utilities are un useable, more appliances in the kitchen and more loos needed.
A.
Very nice and quiet place to stay, tidy and clean, internet signal in the room is not good but the common area there is very nice reception and is very nice look and comfortable too
They provide bed sheets and a warmer in the room
Good place to stay ...gentle staff

(Translated) A wonderful spot of earth. Designed with love. You can spend more than just one night between free-range chickens. The sanitary facilities are very clean. We were greeted very friendly and everything was very uncomplicated.
For those of you with whom this place is on the route, I can only make a recommendation.

(Translated) Beautiful place to spend the day or just stay one night, it only costs NZD20 but in CamperMate it was in promo to NZD 15. The bathrooms and showers were super clean ... the kitchen is spacious, the only bad thing is that there are no utensils. .. if you want to cook you have to bring your own things ... It has several tracks to do even one to go down to the beach ... I highly recommend it ...

(Translated) We stayed here for 3 nights with 2 adults and 3 children on the campervan space.
Simply great. Quiet and chilled with a great view of the sea.
Definitely recommendable.
The only downer: driving up and down a tiny serpentine road with a huge campervan. But it works.
(Original)
D.
(Translated) As already mentioned, it is very idyllic place, where you can stay longer. Toilets are clean and the showers are IO. Although otherwise IO and for $ 15 the night in the van / car / tent and PP is nothing wrong if you have nothing against free-range chickens and sheep
(Original)

(Translated) Probably one of New Zealand's most beautiful places, if not the earth. Pure nature, sheep and other animals roam freely, great hiking trails and the incomparable view of the bay of Akaroa / Banks Peninsula. The hosts treat every guest with an extra dose of care and ensure an unforgettable camping experience with eggs of their own chickens and fresh bread. This is still topped by the dolphin swimming, which is organized here in contrast to other providers in manageable groups and very animal-friendly. A dream!
(Original)
