Y.I so much enjoyed my stay at the Duke Hostel in Greymouth.A lovely historic building.Glen and Daniel are wonderful hosts with a great knowledge of it's history.The rooms are bright and colourful, with kitchen , lounge and laundry amenities. A happy , friendly atmosphere, on the beautiful West Coast of New Zealand. I certainly recommend a visit.
L.A good option for a night's stay or even for longer. Very colorful interior walls. Comfy beds and clean bathroom! Josh was very welcoming. Do check it out if you decide to stay in Greymouth 😊
m.Very good experience, very neat and clean kitchen, a big fridge, lounge is pretty big and cozy, there is a fire pit as well as well, well maintained historic building.

Building exterior may look a little shabby but I'm glad it's substance over appearance. There's even the convenience of a sink in the room. And a cute little air con/heat pump unit in the room. Shared bathrooms were clean too.

A.We always enjoy the Duke as a restful haven after our tramping trips. Glen is just such a helpful friendly guy. Just needs to update his shorts in keeping with the colour scheme of his establishment.

A.Very nice Hostel. The owners are so nice and they work very hard to make your stay as comfortable as possible. There is an excellent equipped kitchen and also the rooms have very good and clean beds. The toilets, the showers and everything else is very clean. There is also fast WiFi and a big information board with travel tips for Greymouth and the West Coast. I stayed here for four nights and I really enjoyed it!
R.I have been traveling both island and have been staying mostly in hostels and Duke is probably my favorite so far. The staff is hard working and they place is super clean. The bar is a nice place to hang out in the evening and the prices are really good. I would travel back to Greymouth just to stay at Duke. I met a lot of really nice people there.
C.Free breakfast. Lots of rooms. Very colorful. Clean beds, sheets and sinks. Clean toilets. Cleans bathrooms. Amazing kitchen.
I had a very nice and relaxing time here. It's the closest hostel from the buses stop and the train station.
I think that the building used to be a hotel/restaurant/bar ... Plenty potential here, I hope the new owner will do great! It's massive.
L.Greatest youth hostel I have ever been to. The staff was real nice. Bedroom was clean and had great natural light in the morning. The lounge had a warm fire on our arrival and was really cosy. Free toast and jam in the morning which is really handy. Highly recommend.
A.Really cute hostel with lovely staff. Free breakfast in the morning and free soup in the evening. The rooms are pretty okay, they even have their own toilet and shower, but there is no lock on the door. You have to use the facilities outside of your room if you want to lock them. But it's still a really nice place. So colorful!
M.The owners of this place are people oriented and helpful. We came here on one of the busiest nights of the year in Greymouth and weren’t greeted with stressed out employees but friendly ones. The owner’s son showed us to our room, which was fresh and clean and the beds are soo comfortable! The bathrooms are clean and so is the kitchen. There is a cheap bike hire and a bar and a cafe attached to the hostel. And the rooms were really quite affordable! We enjoyed staying in this family friendly place.
C.Clean rooms, nice people and owner. Soup served at night (same soup each night), bread and jam for breakfast. Good location. Big kitchen and lounge/dining area. Had a sink in my share room which was very convenient. Free tea and coffee too.
C.One of the cleanest hostel I have ever been on my 5 years travels. The owner is really friendly, welcoming and ready to answer any questions. Free basic breakfast, and free soup every day. Wifi worked well too. I can do nothing but recommend this place if you’re passing through Greymouth.

R.Good budget accommodation in Greymouth. Rooms are updated and comfortable, super clean. The decor is kind of funky and strange, lots of colors all around the place and weird art everywhere. Location just outside of the city center is convenient.
H.We stayed in a 4-people dorm. room is clean but heater is not strong enough to heat up the room. there are 2 floors but no elevator/lift, thus may not be convenient for those with large luggage. Very poor wifi connection. On the other hand, breakfast is good. Hostel is walking distance to Countdown supermarket, i-site (information center) and clock tower. staffs are friendly. There is a parking space behind the hostel.
V.Really fun environment, lovely and colourful cosy rooms, great quality bedding and towels!!! host was brilliant and went above and beyond for us when we had an oopsie with the bikes, brilliant price for bike rent tho! Some lovely ways to go on them. :)

Lovely and helpful staff, tidy and clean rooms and facilities. Big kitchen with everything you'll need for and free breakfast. Also appreciate the game room with pool, table soccer and more! Will come back for sure!

S.Best hostel I've ever been to by far. Clean, quiet, cheap, convenient location 5 mins from the train/bus station & grocery store, free soup & toast & hot drinks, and the owners are helpful and friendly.
If I'm ever back in Greymouth, I know I'll stay here again!
Z.Nice enough place for a short stay, but overall the hostel was pretty rundown. The common space and kitchen were a decent size, but shared bathrooms and rooms themselves had lots of dings and dents, carpet wear, etc. While not unclean, the state of the furniture and items around made the place feel dirty and old.
The guy who checked us in said that it had just switched owners and they were going through some changes, like the bar area that was completely gutted (not sure if it ever was previously active though.) You could see into it, and he even said we could go in and access the pool table, but it was a complete mess. You could tell that it had a lot of potential, with beer taps and such. I hope this place can pull it together, because it could be a really great spot in an otherwise boring town.
Oh, they did have a rather neat "rock garden" in the common area where visitors could sign or paint a rock with art and leave it for the hostel. They had markers and such to encourage participation. It was like a guestbook of sorts; definitely one of the most unique things about the place and one that they should continue to highlight!

L.In greymouth I have been in 3 different motel/hotel : Breeze motel, royal hotel an the duke backpacker and I totally recommend you the last one. I stayed few nights there and I never had any problems. If you need anything, they will be there for you, they care about you and your journey and what you would like to do. It's an awesome place to spend some nights and time ! Thank you
k.Place is incredible. Like an old hotel with a nice fire in the common area that keeps the place warm in the winter. Private rooms are cheaper than most but dorms are unreal. With a window over looking the town, beds spaced out very well and lots of room in the dorms. New owners are best I've dealt with in New Zealand, a father and son that are a killer team. The son Dan had his only day off work that week and drove me around greymouth to check it out to see the beauty of the surroundings 10 out 10 would stay again.

E.Compared to other hostles we have stayed at. This place was clean, soup at night was tasty, some toast for breakfast. Honestly I would give them a 4.5 but I can't on Google. The room we stayed in was kinda noisey since it's door was not sealed all the way. But the owners where very present and you could tell they cared about the hostle they run.

I worked for accomodation in this hostel for two months and it was an awesome experience. The former and new owners are awesome, friendly and helpful. I will remeber u guys helping to fix my car lock, beeing there when i was sad about a break up and understanding the problems of 2 jobs.
This hostel is bringing people together. While i was there 2 couples formed, and i met my travelmate Sina.
I comparison to other hostels in town this one is not noisy, more family friendly and in a better location. If i ever come back to Greymouth and the bar is not open again u guys know what is going to happen :D
T.We booked at late 8pm and the owner waited for us 40min to arrive. Friendly, bargain prices, great room. Tidy toilets and showers. No noise... We rate it 5 stars. Thanks!
D.This place is so meta in otherwise sleepy town :-) Great owner, still serving soup and toast with jams in the morning. Nice place to get some rest, very quiet (slept there off season).
