Happy with the price we paid. Beds comfy, clean and tidy, big rooms, lovely old building. Situated well for variety of restaurants. Shower was pathetic and not safe for getting in and out of easily as over a deep bath and not suitable for anyone over 5ft.
M.
Best value for money hotel I've used in Aotearoa. Friendly staff, clean rooms, not too noisy even though it's on a main street, a lovely balcony to watch the town from, and spacious comfortable rooms.
C.
A yesteryears chic but slightly musty feel to it. I love old and traditional it has such a lovely feel.
Rooms were cleaned erratically and sometimes a towel or bath mat was missing.
Had a nice view of the sun setting over buildings from my window.
Very good location I had no problem getting parks nearby on the street for overnight, after 5pm.
The old style lift was great, and when not working provided me some appreciated exercise.
Anyone who has issues with stairs may want to check how reliable the lift is or request a room on ground floor if possible.
H.
Cool style and big rooms... it just needs a refresh. Everything has a musty smell and the service was average. Not bad, not great.
S.
Location perfect. Staff were fantastic . Rooms excellent :) :)
Required renovation as building is old and paid parking was tight.
D.
I fully enjoyed staying here for the night I recommend ringing them for the best price as I found it cheaper to ring them personally. Plus for the extra $20 I had my car in a secure place for the night just off the main road.
P.
Room was very spacious location excellent. Noise overnight from outside and other rooms was terrible didn't sleep a wink.
D.
Talk about big rooms, this hotel definitely has them. While the acoustics is increased with the street noise, it adds to the flavor of the room. The decor is in keeping with the period look of the hotel, due to heritage status of the building. The room was clean as well as the bathroom, and the bed was big and extremely comfortable. The staff was outstanding, friendly and very helpful. Well worth the stay.
G.
It is very 3 stars. Needs major refit. Room was huge but sparsely furnished with a soft bed and too low. Shower over bath needs hand holds and toilet was ridiculously low.
L.
One step out the door and you're in town! Room was jaw droppingly HUUUGE. Loved the smokers balcony with the nightlife view. Friendly service. Only downfall is the lack of parking and a little bit more detail in the bathroom cleaning...
O.
Was alright!! Helpful staff and friendly.
The building a bit old but clean.
the location is great in the middle of the city!
The parking $20 per day very small parking under the building (I took it anyway) street parking is $6 per hour!!
Recommended if you are looking for a cheap room to stay in and a good location.
R.
exactly what i needed. Just a room with a shower. Ask for a room without a view as you can hear the street noise if your at the front of the building but as im a heavy sleeper it didnt bother me.
close to CBD kebab shop at front entry is amazing.
paid parking is a lot to be desired tight and when people dont park straight you cant fit
K.
Price was really good for centre of town. Room could with tlc. Curtains different lengths but totally comfortable still. Suggest variety of pillows as all were very hard. Larger room very nice. Reception has been revamped to original older era. Staff very helpful.
c.
Great location. The receptionist was friendly and cheerful. The room was big, blackout curtains, comfortable bed and aircon. Had a lovely sleep. However, sadly, the premises are in need of alot of TLC. It has potential to be a classy, nostalgic hotel. But it has a party hotel feeling instead. The photos dont match the atmosphere. Spooky as stairwell and carpark. The reception did give up her park for us, which we really appreciated. That being said it is unlikely we will stay there again.
J.
Lovely staff. Stayed with child for funeral. Very noisy with construction work going on around building and water blasting till after 7pm. Not very sound proof but good sized room.
C.
Very cost effective accommodation in the heart of Hamilton. Near all the shops, lots of on street parking. The room was clean and tidy. Definitely good value for money.
K.
Loved our stay. Made a last minute booking and reception were super helpful. Amazing with helping us navigate and location is great. With the open all night as well we we able to walk the city and come back whenever. Rooms are so cozy and beds even more so!!! Has balconys to eat on and overlook Victoria street. Super happy with stay and very lucky to get a room on a thursday night
A.
Friendly staff and great service. An easy location to stay at if needing to be in the CBD area. Shoutout to Nick at the reception who was so kind and patient with our group who were very vibrant in the middle of the night!
B.
First room we were given wasn't very nice but then got upgraded to a better room. I would stay here again even though its a little old.
S.
Fair for the price we paid via ‘booking.com’. Would have been disappointed if had to pay full price as it is quite dated. But the rooms were big with huge windows. Also the balcony over looking Victoria Street was cool, as you could drink and chill.
M.
My daughter and i had the most awesome experience first time just the two of us had such an awesome time and enjoyed the accomodation highly recommended for families and also the others that were also staying were very welcoming and lovely people. I would love to go back next year if still available. Much appreciated
N.
The bed was lovely and soft - truly the best nights sleep that I have had in a long time!
There was a loud hum, that was audible until 10 o clock, but then it stopped. A very courteous establishment. Yes it is old, but it is classy. Yes the carpet is dated, and the stairwell is treacherous, but the elevator works perfectly.
The staff at reception are lovely, and bend over backwards to help
Yes, some of housekeeping need to be retrained - but it's just little things.
Overall, we were very pleased with our stay.
Highly recommended.
S.
Great location, some noise carries over from street, but not an issue & understable. Room was large, lovely & warm (heat pump). Bath towels were tiny, lift smelt like mould, tv too low from bed view (maybe put up on wall?), reception staff could probably do with some social skills & maybe Admin needs to review their processes, because they didn't reply to an email from us to book a carpark before we arrived. Overall, it suited us, as were mostly out.
P.
What it lacks in luxury it makes up in character and very friendly staff. I prefer this hotel to the stiff and sterile Novotel any day. Cool balcony too 😎
K.
Great room. Bed very very comfortable and the staff was fantastic too. When we holiday in Hamilton u guys is the first place I would come to. Thank u so much
T.
Mixed. We booked for two nights due to my daughter having surgery at Waikato Hospital and we were from out of town. When we arrived only one night had been booked. Luckily we were able to obtain a second night. Lovely big room. Great location. Bit difficult when it comes to parking options but we were lucky and had to leave first thing each morning so were gone before traffic wardens were around. Nice service with reception staff. Lovely big bathroom.
L.
Always a pleasure to stay here. Old and dated...yes but that makes no difference at all! The beds are great, the rooms are always warm, clean and large! Free parking if you are lucky enough, we've stayed at least 4 times and have never missed out on a park yet.
K.
The rooms look like they used to be really posh once - but have become rather run down! Unfortunately there was no working air-conditioning. However, when we asked the staff if we might be moved, because our room was getting very warm, they were happy to move us and did not charge extra for the better room. Our rooms were spotlessly clean and although a little old, they were quite comfortable.
A.
This old girl is starting to show her age and requires some love and a refurb to bring her up to the standard she deserves.
Some lovely architectural features like full height windows in the rooms, towering studs, generous floor plates and massive bathrooms speak to the era that the hotel was originally built.
Pleasant enough, though being in the city on a Saturday, we heard plenty of action around 2am.
Staff were polite and friendly. Would stay here again for the price.
R.
Very large spacious rooms, high ceilings. Main bed was massive. Nil carpark space, although advertised. There is a building for cars however front counter staff would have had to double park it somewhere and hold the keys. I had to park on the street, overnight, not ideal. Toilets were American which meant water in them was really high, it made them look like they were constantly blocked. Good location, city center. Road noise can be heard from room but this is to be expected from a inner city hotel. On the whole good location and price.
N.
Charming atmosphere, lovely spacious room, felt like we were in an episode of Downton Abbey! Comfortable bed, nice and warm with the great pump, great water pressure in the shower, beautiful decor. Parking was an issue (not enough for all guests and quite pokey) but overall a lovely stay.
J.
The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The lift was functioning well. For basic central accommodation it is good. However the shower was ordinary. The mixing tap was difficult to get a great temperature and the pressure/water volume was very low. Not a nice shower. There isn't any cooling AC but did find opening the window provided a nice evening temperature. I didn't find my room uncomfortable. In Winter the rooms would be comfy. Yes there is free wi-fi but the speeds were absolutely terrible - I disconnected and used expensive international mobile data in preferance. In summary I think this place isn't bad and the prices are reasonable. However with abit of focus along with minimal expense the overall experience could be better. I would stay here again.
B.
Lovely hotel front and large spacious rooms. As most of the other reviews have mentioned the hotel is getting tired. The elevator has a musty smell as do most of the carpets. The grout in our room had been painted white-collar I assume to brighten up mould/discolouration. The parking out the back is very tight and is surrounded by the back of multiple restaurants so smells like garbage and cigarettes. Due to its proximity to several nite clubs it is very noisy in the front facing rooms until the early hours of the morning. The staff are friendly and helpful.
S.
The hotel is fairly nice considering when it was built in 1923. Double height ceiling and spacious room, comfy bed are some plus points of Greek-Roman Beaux Architecture design. Have a spare heater and watch out for the shower and basin taps, requires sensitive control as the hot water can scald your body. Kids and seniors be cautious. They should have thermostatic control in hot water system. Staff not very helpful, I asked for the invoice and did not get one some excuse, and no thin pillows so carry one.
E.
The hotel gives you a grand feeling as you enter. High ceiling and massive spaces took my breadth away. Our room was fairly clean and cheap. The location is perfect for big time foodies as it is surrounded by many bars and restaurants. Highly recommended to those looking for value for money.
D.
Location was great , room nice and big and clean and bed comfortable. Noise as expected when in an older building on the Main Street . Car parking is adequate, we were lucky in getting one , it’s a bit of a rabbit warren but no major issues
We stayed for two nights with a breakfast package and the breakfasts were awesome
Wifi was good and staff very friendly
E.
The front desk staff was very friendly. Yes the building definitely seems very old but at least it was kept neat and tidy. We stayed here to watch a game of Rugby. The manager was very accommodating and had managed to put me in a room at the back of the hotel which was much quiter. Very good location as it is located next to many multi cuisine restaurants. Will definitely come back.
j.
Having read some reviews I was concerned after booking however, the room I had did have a heat pump which cooled the room. The beds were clean and comfortable and my mother and I enjoyed a complimentary breakfast at the cafe next door which was part of our booking. I would stay here again.
R.
Have just had a nights stay here. The hotel is in need of some improvements it has a tired feeling to it. It was obviously a very grand hotel it its youth. The rooms and the hotel was very clean which is a big plus and the staff were helpful. A heater was made available in the room and so we were nice and cosy. The mattress needed changing but I still had a good nights sleep. If you are driving make sure you have a small car because parking is under the hotel and very tight. It is a great location to restaurants and cafes.
J.
I like this Hotel, its not flash but is fairly tidy. The decor, room finishes, carpet and furniture all suit the hotels era.
My room was clean, tidy and offered a great size room to spread out in the only fault it had was there was no matress cover on the bed. The window drapes were thick and heavy (keep me toasty and dark in my room) the bed was supa comfy and the tea/ coffee/ milk was nice. The toilet flush is abit weird for me (fills from the bottom before it empties).
They offer good value for your $ if u get a discount room rate, 24/7 front desk, free wifi, tea/coffee, complimentary toiletries, daily room servicing.
s.
The hotel is in the prime location with many restaurants and clubs nearby. Just lacks in providing sufficient car parks. Our room was huge with high ceilings. The cleanliness in the room and bathroom was satisfactory. The hotel is still in the process of some renovations and I hope it will be even better on our next visit.
J.
Parking is utterly abysmal. Tempted to leave before we even walked in. Parking situation did not improve, only available park for our booked room was impossible to fit into and access. Had to pay for parking across the road over night. Room is dated, single bed had a mattress too big for it and kept falling off. Air conditioning unit directly above head. Rubbish found under double bed. Wooden blinds in bathroom broken, could see into the hallway across the foyer from the toilet seat. Not good to shower in. Shower head was at my eye level, had to duck to shower and I'm only 5"6. Ridiculous to see a bible in the drawer in 2017. We aren't all Christian anymore! Windows are not OSH approved, can climb out and jump easily from the second floor. Staff at the desk were excellent.
r.
Got the room at a great price, decor is dated and floorboards creak really loudly. Parking here is a bit of a nightmare, but the bed was incredibly comfy and I had the best night sleep. For that alone I'd stay again
A.
Not worth the money. It's nice ish room and had a good view and the location couldn't have been better for going clubbing, literally across the road. but felt like they had just made the room so at first glance it looked nice but if you actually looked the power sockets we're wonky and there were little cracks on the wall with the Windows. The sheets were stiff. On the website it said there would be breakfast provided but didn't see that anywhere. Overall it was fine for the night but not for the price.
s.
Hotel it self is food, staff is friendly. Its a heritage building renovated, so facilities not very modern. The room size was quite big, 4 people could easily be accommodated. Restaurants are very handy, only drawback is parking... Quite tight corners between pillars that test your patience/skills.. But staff are happy to help out. May be they should have valet service ?
R.
Was attracted to book this hotel, to experience the heritage feel (i mean the Queen stayed here after all!!) It was fantastically located and had a unique boutique feel right upon entry and all the way to the neat spacious rooms. Friendly attentive staff, well worth the choice. Shall come back again. (has amazing night life too :P)
B.
Room was pretty clean but pretty run down and muggy as hell.
Even with either the windows open or internal air con, the heat was unbearable.
The window was very stiff to open and there was not much info about the rules of the place in terms of guests, noise, alcohol, food etc.
Would rather pay more for somewhere else than come back here given the option
E.
We had a reservation with a discount. You can tell that the hotel is in decay so they are lowering prices. The room, however, was spacious, so was bathroom. I would recommend it in general to people who are on a budget like we were.
There's a statue of Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show just round the corner, which is pretty cool .
J.
This hotel is very much in a good location. But from pictures and what you actually see are day and night. There is limited space in their carpark so we needed to find a carpark and pay for overnight parking. The staff at the front seemed very smug about telling us there was no additional parking available. Otherwise, you get what you pay for. The room was decent and the beds were okay. It was another place to sleep before moving on to the next New Zealand city.
P.
nice-central-large room-great staff but doesn't deserve luxury room status. Dated, mattress was old,no air conditioning , cramped parking. Would still go back but not while heat wave is still happening
J.
My partner and I stayed there overnight, the hotel is within walking distance to many restaurants& pubs around.
Room was very neat and clean big bathroom very comfortable beds.
Freindly and helpful staff.
Carpark was bit tight. We recommend and come back again.
P.
Overall it is an ok place to stay. The rooms are very large, and are not too noisy considering the location of the hotel, but is also somewhat dated throughout. The location was very convenient for me right in the city center, most others were a long way out of town.
E.
Its 100 year old Hotel. It's got some cool quirks about it. The rooms are spacious. Park is on a first come first serve basis at the rear of the hotel. I'm curious what is on the 3rd floor. I forgot to ask the duty manager. This reminds me of the movie "Grand Budapest Hotel" Its cool I like it.
K.
Big beautiful rooms, but no air con. Elevator was broken during my entire stay so my legs got a good workout. On site parking but it's in an old warehouse and is a NIGHTMARE to navigate.
r.
Nice in town lovely, could do with bigger TV
A.
This was our first stay at VR HAM and it exceeded our expectations. The staff are extraordinary and were very helpful,They go the extra mile in all they do. The entire hotel is immaculately kept, especially, the front entrance area of the hotel. For us, there is no where else in HAMILTON that we would consider staying.
P.
Overall enjoyed the old place. It's from a different era yet has good wifi and great service. Great location. Comfy large bed, white crisp linen, good shower. Dinner next door to the left was great and breakfast next door to the right was fantastic.
K.
Arrived from Wellington at 1- 1:30am & only glitch was no parking - which was quickly resolved. Nice room with comfortable beds. Excellent rates. Would go back.
R.
Ok right in town, no parking available our room was at the front so was real noisy with traffic
Bathroom need to be up graded a bit
How ever ok place if just want to party in the city
H.
Hotel is right in the cafe restaurant zone. Tired decor, broken aircon but there was a fan. Comfortable bed, good hot shower and pleasant staff. Garage parking was tight but it was there. Bedroom and bathroom were HUGE.
C.
It says '4 star Hotel' in one of the online booking websites, not sure whether it's mis-informed. We didn't feel it did live up to that standard. Air-con a little noisy and not working as we expected. Bathroom supply minimal.
D.
I loved it here. The rooms could do with a little bit of sprucing up. However loved it
A.
Nice and cosy, central city
R.
Nice bed, room we had, had a good variety of tea. Car park was a bit hard to find and get in. There is also a pub across the road that was a bit rowdy, though they stopped at a decent time.
Great pricing for what you get though.
L.
The lift is under maintenance, the rooms are dimly lit, only four little uht milk things in the fridge. but the staff were kinda friendly
S.
Has a facade of classiness, but beneath that you can see that the furniture is old. Imagine a castle that has been worn out and never repaired and you have this. Was probably great at one point.
B.
Beautiful big room and terrace. Lovely spa bath. The building is old but very good value for money!
A.
Amazing hotel with a very good staff and heritage rooms. They are very professional and prompt and the free wifi and parking are a added bonus in the town center.
S.
Great place, a bit noisy early morning as the council emptys the city rubbish buns but that's not the Hotels fault.
C.
This hotel was central to everything we wanted, bars, cafes, restaurants and even Skycity Casino. The room was neat and tidy, staff was so amazing and friendly but unfortunately, no aircon, just an upright fan and bit tight car park.
T.
VR Hamilton has a great location right on Victoria Street near Waikato Museum and Hood Street. Nice place, good customer service & Car park was bit tight but ok. Big rooms. It was old school hotel but clean and tidy. Best thing about the place is it is central located. Only thing is it is a bit dated.
P.
Very decent size room with a large bathroom. Bathroom is clean but the room had pretty strong smell, like it hasn't been ventilated used for a long time. It's okay after a few hours, so it's not a big deal I suppose. Car park is very limited and is in a back alley, which isn't ideal and is a problem if you need to use the car in the evening, as the car parks are likely gone by the time you are back.
Overall this place provides decent room at affordable prices.
M.
Excellent customer service, good location
a.
All we can say is that our stay was so amazing. The room was neat and tidy and the staff was so friendly. We will definitely recommend this hotel to our friends.
T.
Huge room. Big bathroom. Perfect location if you're hitting the town at night. Great price. Parking a bit tricky
h.
Rooms are clean and tidy. Staff are friendly. Clear communication between staff and their coworkers.
G.
For the location and price, good value.
The hotel is a bit dated, but served it purpose for a 1 night stay.
R.
Lovely spacious rooms comfortable sleeping, alittle slippery in bathroom may need non slip mats in each bathroom avoid accidents, friendly staff nice stay
J.
For this price you it's a great room, comfy bed. Only issue is the noise from the street, but you expect that staying in the middle of town
j.
The hotel is located at nice location. Our rooms was comfortable and clean , awesome hospitality shown by staff. Good value for money.
N.
The customer service we received was really good. Our room was nice and roomy with the high ceilings and large bathroom, warm and clean
B.
OMG I love this place. It is like a Wes Anderson Movie, a little quirky but well organised. Our room was massive, clean and quiet (Friday/Saturday night). Loved it.
K.
Enjoyed our stay at VR Hamilton. A bit tired in parts but comfortable and friendly staff. Will be good when renovation work completed.
R.
I was at VR Hamilton 2 weeks back for a trip to Hamilton with my wife, I booked the hotel online and upon arrival the person on the front office (CK) welcomed in a cheerful manner and during my stay helped me out whenever I would require some advice about the places to visit and dine out places .... Good hotel overall and lovely place ....recommend it
C.
Good hospitality from staff, quick check in. Rooms were big and comfortable nice clean and tidy, though car park was a bit tight but apart from that we loved our stay there and would love to stay again.
T.
Great customer service from the house keeping, narender was friendly and willing to help with any questions I had :)
E.
Hotel right in centre of city very noisy in middle of night lorries beeping as they back up to deliver or collect police sirens, noisy air con in room bathroom had mould on shower head and along the seal
S.
Our suite was huge, definitely worth what we paid,so close to everything and such a very short walk back after a long night out. I recommend stopping into eat burger by the casino
D.
Good proximity to the airport. Offers to keep the car free for a week.
A.
We tried VR Hamilton for the. It is really comfortable, the rooms are huge the bathrooms are massive too. We had an easy relaxing stay
r.
Great place very accomadating some small problems that need addressing ie toilet flusher needed fixing and lift was out of order when i stayed but all in all great place to stay if you want some night life around the town centre
N.

S.
It was delighted to stay at VR hamilton. Front desk was very helpful and Room service is very nice. I will def pick them again on our next trip.
R.
Loved the room it was so spacious the bed was so comfortable room was warm, it's a quirky creaky stay but I loved it.
K.
This place would have been amazing in its day, but it's seriously run down... It's under going to refurb but it's too far gone..
The terrace room is seriously pimp, would be ideal for a sick party... The balcony is the best, but it's just run down..
Hope you guys can get your act together
D.
Great room.Large and well appointed. Good central location. Parking a problem but value for money
S.
Historical building in the heart of CBD with lovely rooms. No cold aircon in the hotel and was a bit stuffy on a warm day despite a table fan
S.
The rooms are huge, very clean and the bed is extremely comfortable. All the hotel staff helpful and friendly.
V.

K.

D.
Large room. Great location. Only negative - could hear adjacent room clearly
P.
Day shift staff could smile a bit more but the lad on nights, he’s why it’s 5 stars, not 3!!
Keep up the great job mate!!
U.
I don't know why this place is so underrated, I've stayed in the Burj al Arab and the Savoy in London and this hotel is up there with them

C.
Old large room. Comfy bed slept well. Smelly bathroom. Good location.
v.
Nice hotel and room are small but it's in the city so it's worth for the money as compared to other hotels in the city
C.
Faded glory, needs a major revamp. Enjoyed the massive room and cheap price. Right in Hamiltons party zone so very convenient but obviously noisy.

(Translated) The already renovated building is probably already 80 years old. Nevertheless a good accommodation with very spacious rooms. Breakfast is available in one of the neighboring restaurants.
