Reviews of Hawthorne House
Such a stunning, relaxing venue. The most beautiful gardens ... with the addition of the two alpacas, pigs and even an opportunity to feed the chickens. Love the decks outside the bedroom for quiet private time to enjoy the surroundings. We also met some really lovely people who were also staying - at the lovely welcome drinks and breakfast.
Peter and Paul have the best recommendations and contacts, they read us really well and managed to get us into some great experiences. From wine tours, cycling, walks, beautiful restaurants and casual cafes to the Sunday markets ! Definitely a special stay, we will be back - and for longer. Thanks !
My stay at Hawthorne House was fantastic, it exceeded any expectations I had. The hosts Peter and Paul were wonderful, so welcoming and between the breakfast with the birds singing out on the deck, evening drinks with lots of laughter and the most comfortable beds you could imagine this is the best accommodation I have ever experienced.
Hawthorne House is fabulous. We loved our beautiful spacious well appointed room where every detail has been thought through. Peter and Paul are superb hosts and breakfast of local products was absolutely delicious. Thanks so much!
We had a fantastic weekend stay with Peter and Paul at Hawthorne House with ten friends. It is a serene place with wonderful gardens, very peaceful and relaxing, large immaculately presented bedrooms so we felt we had our own little oasis amongst the group. Their interior decoration is very engaging with many surprises. Peter and Paul are consummate hosts, generous and welcoming which enhanced the whole experience. Highly recommended!
Peter and Paul were extremely accommodating, efficient, organised, jovial, warm and sharing hosts. The breakfast, nibbles and complimentary wine was extraordinary and it was a privilege and pleasure to be able to share their beautiful home. The meal recommendations were sincerely appreciated. A very comfortable and relaxing stay.
Had the pleasure of staying at The Mews which is the 3 bedroom accommodations attached to the main house.
We and our friends both are super hosts with our own boutique accommodation and we were blown away by this jewel.
Beautiful gardens, truly stylish decor with thoughtful touches like fresh roses and local milk and yoghurt provided. Luxe bedding and a kitchen with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Fab bbq and outdoor area. Bliss.
Treat yourself!
What a wonderful winter stay we had in The Mews at Hawthorne House. A beautiful rambling villa out in the country with an expansive garden to feel like you're actually getting a break, but close enough to get to Havelock North and Hastings within 10 minutes. Beautifully appointed and Peter and Paul are wonderful hosts. Thoroughly recommend.
We stayed in the Mews and it was ideal as we shared with friends and were able to self cater. Such a beautiful spot, and perfect weather for enjoying a few drinks on the terrace and enjoy the garden.
It was an absolute delight to stay here. Thank you so much Peter and Paul. Such a beautiful place with so much style from the hosts. Loved having drinks all together on the first night and oh wow what a breakfast. We had such a relaxing time in our room with the garden view, in love with the high ceilings and surrounding nature. Thank you for such good recommendations around the area.
A wonderful, comfortable luxury boutique experience with two amazing and welcoming hosts.
World class and we look forward to a return visit soon.
Went on a Bay Tours bus trip.We visited Hawthorne House for a couple of hours & were shown around garden & house.Peter & Paul were wonderful hosts. We all were given a couple pieces of delicious shortbread on our departure .
This was a lovely oasis. Great rooms and service. If you are looking for value for money and comfort this is the place. Spoil yourself!!
What an amazing experience!
We chose Hawthorne House because of it’s beautifully restored, tastefully decorated rooms, wonderful gardens and excellent location but what really makes this place special are Peter and Paul the amazing owners! Nothing is too much trouble. They are amiable, knowledgeable and so welcoming. You really feel like you are staying with friends. The delicious breakfast each morning (of quality, locally-sourced produce) was a real highlight. We are definitely looking forward to returning. Don’t look any further! This is the place to stay!!!
We had the best weekend staying at Hawthorne House. The house is absolutely beautiful with the most thoughtful and elegant touches. Pete and Paul are amazing hosts. Can't wait to stay again.
We are very happy to recommend Hawthorne House. The hosts were friendly and welcoming, making us feel like friends of the family. The accomodation was sumptuously comfortable - so much so that we spent one day just relaxing in the garden, drinking wine and chatting. Finally the food was delicious, with generous portions that kept us going throughout our various touristy endeavours. Absolutely a delightful venue!
Honestly, stop overthinking it, just book it already - you won't regret it.
We had an absolutely blissful two night stay with Peter & Paul.
- The rooms are spacious, warm and incredibly comfortable.
- Complimentary in room snacks, wine, beer etc are much appreciated after long days!
- The breakfasts are fantastic - wherever possible everything locally sourced, and the croissants are fresh, authentic & delicious.
- The property is both beautiful and interesting - Peter & Paul did a wonderful job on the renovations, I may have made a few jokes that they should do a stocktake on the art after we left - such a fantastic collection that we really enjoyed viewing.
- You will ideally want to have a car as the location isn't really walking distance to many local attractions (and is off a high speed road), but for us this was more part of the appeal anyway - we wanted somewhere quieter with parking included, and driving wherever we wanted to go wasn't a problem at all.
Peter and Paul couldn't have been more hospitable, with welcome drinks on the evening of arrival, we had lots of interesting conversations and they went out of their way to make us feel at home. Money incredibly well spent, such a wonderful experience & any time we're back in the area we'll be staying here again!
A beautifully restored historical home, filled to the brim with fantastic art & whimsical novelties. A quick drive away from the centre of Havelock North and other areas of interest in the Hawkes Bay. Peter and Paul are great hosts and really champion local boutique products. The breakfast fresh baked croissants and homemade jams were worth the trip alone! I recommend Hawthorne House to locals and international travellers looking to experience luxury hospitality without sacrificing home comfort.
What a fabulous stay. Peter and Paul were outstanding hosts. Beautiful accomodation. Such a treat. Thank you so much. Just loved it.
We stayed 4 nights at the fabulous Hawthorne House, this was truly one of the best places we have ever stayed in across NZ, the gourmet breakfast everyday was so delicious, it kept us going all day until dinnertime with no need for anything more other than a coffee. Paul and Peter are both top hosts, generous with their extra special touches, highly recommend this as a place to stay in the Hawkes Bay
Paul and Peter have created a luxurious yet relaxing environment with a spacious beautifully restored country house full of character with a breathtaking collection of art, elegant furniture and decor. The large rooms have every detail thought of and needed for a very comfortable stay with ensuite. Heated bathroom floor, generous snacks and complementary minibar. All around you, beauty, style, music, lovely large garden and the hosts ensure complete privacy while warmly welcoming you. They are charismatic and jovial and the generous full breakfast service is a symphony in itself! Crystal, linen, silver...and beautifully cooked with all local and organic produce .
Exquisite home with cosy, private guest accommodation. Hosts are caring, attentive and friendly. We absolutely loved our visit.
This was a wonderful experience that we will talk about for weeks to come. Our abiding memory is of the friendliness of our hosts, the liberality of their hospitality and their willingness to go out of the way to make our stay a happy one.. The house is a treasure trove of art and the room was both elegant and comfortable,. One must not forget the breakfasts and the amazing croissants. We would go back tomorrow if we could!.
A home away from home with the bonus of great hosts . Peter and Paul have created a beautiful venue to relax and share.
We stayed three nights. The room and ensuite was extremely warm and comfortable with all the extras - bath robes, slippers, complimentary mini bar, tea and coffee. The breakfast was five star with fresh fruit, yoghurt and muesli, croissant and home made jams, followed by a cooked breakfast of egg, bacon, salmon, mushrooms, avocado and tomato. We enjoyed sitting at the breakfast table with other guests and sharing our experiences. We had complimentary welcome drinks at 5.30pm on the first night. Our hosts were full of energy and very helpful with recommendations and bookings.
What a pleasure to stay at Hawthorne House. Paul and Peter are wonderful hosts; totally charming, helpful and they make really good recommendations about restaurants, vineyards and galleries. This is not old school B&B. The rooms are elegant and beautiful art is presented around the house. Breakfast is a “family” event with food cooked to order with lots of local products/produce used. The pre dinner drinks are a lovely touch. The house is surrounded by beautiful well maintained gardens.
Am I wildly enthusiastic about this place? Yes I am. I didn’t want to leave...sigh
We had our wedding anniversary and were looking for somewhere special to stay for 3 nights with access to the Hawkes Bay wineries... we couldn't have been happier choosing Hawthorne House with
fantastic hospitality in a stunning location with top amenities. Every little touch was outstanding including the many many artworks located around the house, the stunning gardens, lounge, breakfast areas, 5:30pm drinks and a magical breakfast each morning. Peter and Paul went out of there way to make our stay super special, and I understand they do that for all there guests!!
We can definitely recommend to anyone interested in staying in the Hawkes Bay as we've recommended to all of our friends already. We'll absolutely be back to stay at Hawthorne House to finish off the wineries that we didn't yet get to see and to take in the generous hospitality, access to the best breakfasts we've every had and indulge in the ample complementary local beverages in our room's bar fridge :-)
Truly top notch quality in every area. The breakfast was better than any cafe you’ll visit and the hosts were really genuine and friendly. Highly recommend!
Spectacular weekend spent relaxing and exploring Hawke's Bay's wineries, restaurants, art galleries and festivals, as well as the beautiful countryside. Our hosts are a fountain of local knowledge and able to recommend and book hard-to-access restaurants and other activities for us. The room was extremely comfortable and well-equipped, and included a very tasty and filling breakfast. The house decor is exceptional, full of art in both the common rooms and our bedroom suite. We enjoyed exploring the gardens and an early evening glass of wine with Paul and Peter.
6 of us stayed The Mews for weekend and what an amazing experience.
Anticipation and expectations were high and Hawthorne House delivered on every count. A slice of heaven is probably the most accurate way to describe it - the quality and style of the accommodation, the grounds, the supplied extras, the art and the wonderful hosts are unique.
I can't wait to return and if you want a world class yet superb NZ experience then treat yourself to as long as you can at Hawthorne House.
Had a relaxing time at Hawthorne House. Peter and Paul are awesome hosts and make you feel so welcome.
The breakfast is first class and the chilli chutney, amazing ❤️
We will definitely be back.
The Mews is a modern, spacious and stylish house in a great location. It was spotlessly clean with super-comfortable beds. the kitchen is well-equipped and we also used the BBQ a lot. The location is great to explore the region, and we loved waking to the sound of birdsong. WiFi is strong and fast. The owners and hosts were extremely helpful and communicative before and during our stay
We had our second stay at Hawthorne house, for 2 nights and enjoyed it as much as our first.
Peter and Paul are wonderful hosts who have quickly become Hawkes Bay doyens of art, culture and fine food. Great advice of what to do, where to go and what to see in the area.
We have already decided on our room for our next stay! that should say it all :)
We stayed at Hawthorne House overnight, everything was fabulous from the moment Peter and Paul opened the door to greet us. Breakfast was amazing, rooms spotlessly clean and the house full of character and art. Would stay again in a heartbeat. Thank you! Margaret
An upmarket and elegant B&B professionally managed by delightful hosts. Excellent breakfast and a complimentary minibar. Extensive grounds and gardens around the house and wonderful Elm trees down the driveway. A perfect relaxing spot to stay
Hawthorne House was the perfect location for our stay in the Hawkes Bay. Centrally located and a great base for the F.A.W.C weekend. Our Hawthorne House stay felt special, starting with the handwritten welcome note and gorgeous evening drinks in the stunning landscaped gardens. Our large and airy room was beautiful, with a super comfy bed, stunning art and lots of lovely little luxury touches that made our stay. We left today after a fabulous breakfast made with locally sourced produce and great local tips from Peter and Paul on where to go and what to do in the Hawkes Bay area. We can't wait to return, thank you Peter and Paul.
Great place to stay with great facilities and very comfortable bed. Paul and Peter were fabulous hosts who went out of their way to make us feel at “home” and providing excellent breakfasts. Thoroughly recommended as a place to stay.
Hawthorne House is in a beautiful setting with amazing interior design and artwork. The room had upscale bath room with plenty of toiletries, locally sourced and delicious snacks, cold drinks in the mini bar and lovely coffee. The hosts are so welcoming and attentive in every way. Spotlessly clean, comfy bed, and great breakfast. Can’t wait to return.
Hawthorne House is everything and more. This is truely a magnificent place to stay. Every room is beautifully decorated, it is open and spacious, warm and welcoming. The gardens and grounds are breath taking from the minute you turn into its beautiful driveway lined with grandeur trees. It is clear that the owners have poured a lot of love into this place, and there are thoughtful touches placed all through the property. This is inclusive of the food and beverages on offer which are all locally sourced. Our hosts shared great local knowledge and tips for the area during our stay, with so much on offer to explore close by. We felt very relaxed and refreshed after staying here, will definitely be returning :-)
From the moment we arrived at Hawthorn House we knew we had made the right decision.Greeted by our Hosts Peter & Paul we knew we would enjoy our time here.
We were shown to our room which was more like a luxury suite in a 5* hotel
with a complimentary bar with a variety of snacks.
our bathroom was well equiped with an excellent artisan range of sulphate and paraben free, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand wash
free fast wifi.
Breakfast was an experience of the best local produce available w organic NZ teas. Museli the best ever so we put in an order with their supplier. Croissants the best this side of France.
The cooked breakfast had a great choice and cooked to perfection, up there with the finest 5* hotels.
We will be back again for a restful break.
An amazing place with two awesome people running it. Wonderful surroundings and lovingly presented. Awesome place to enjoy good food, wine and company. Some amazing restaurants near by.
Hawthorne House was a lovely venue for our small wedding in its beautifully kept gardens. We stayed two nights and hosts were super friendly and helpful. We loved the high quality furnishings and a classic setting. Also the pre-dinner drinks! It is a beautiful home, inside and out, which we happily recommend.
You could not ask for better hosts than Peter and Paul! Such friendly, welcoming, organised, caring and professional people! A very competent team that compliment each other beautifully. We held our wedding at Hawthorne House and Peter and Paul did all they could to make it the magical day it was for us and our guests. They were discreetly on hand for all of our needs. Hawthorne House is presented immaculately inside and out with all needs catered for. It was so convenient to have such beautiful grounds for our photos. Having such genuine caring hosts made our day stress free. We had some of our wedding guests stay at Hawthorne House the night before our wedding and they too could not speak more highly of the experience Peter and Paul provide. It was important to us that our grandmothers were comfortable on our special day, Peter and Paul recognised this and were so gentle and kind towards them. My husband recalled the breakfast provided as absolutely devine, a perfect start to our wedding day. Such cheerful chaps with vibrant energy abound. We will be returning for our future anniversaries as we just can not quite get enough of Hawthorne House and its' tremendous hosts. We highly recommend a stay with Peter and Paul! You will not find better in Hawkes Bay in our opinion. Well above 5 stars!

Hawthorne House was an amazing romantic getaway. We celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary and Paul and Peter (our friendly hosts) organised all our bookings . The winery tour was awesome of which they organised. The breakfasts were delicious....especially the croissants. Our room was lovely and quiet and the bed was very comfy. We loved the nibbles and drinks on arrival which gave us a chance to relax and enjoy the great atmosphere that Hawthorne House gave us. Thank you Paul and Peter , we will definitely be back for our next anniversary.
